With a career spanning more than five decades she is still a vibrant, creative individual adored by fans around the globe. Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, the youngest child of Professor Brin Newton-John and Irene, daughter of Nobel Prize winning physicist, Max Born, Olivia moved to Melbourne, Australia with her family when she was five. Her first big break was winning a talent contest on the popular TV show, Sing, Sing, Sing, which earned Olivia a trip to London. By the age of fifteen she had formed an all-girl group called Sol 4 and, in 1963, Olivia was appearing on local daytime TV shows and weekly pop music programs in Australia. When she eventually took her prize-winning trip to London, she teamed up with her friend from Melbourne, Pat Carroll (now Pat Farrar), to create a double act, “Pat & Olivia,” and the duo toured army bases and clubs throughout the UK and Europe. Olivia cut her first single for Decca Records in 1966, a version of Jackie DeShannon's "Till You Say You'll Be Mine,” and in 1971, she recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "If Not For You," co-produced by Bruce Welch and fellow Aussie and friend, John Farrar, whom she continues to collaborate with today.Olivia's U.S. album debut, Let Me Be There, produced her first top ten single of the same name, with Olivia being honored by the Academy Of Country Music as “Most Promising Female Vocalist” and a Grammy Award as “Best Country Vocalist.” This proved to be only the beginning of a very exciting career. What the Riff?!?
1980 - March: Molly Hatchet "Flirtin' with Disaster"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2023 38:20

Many folks know that the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd came out of Jacksonville, Florida.  But they weren't the only big southern rock band to arise from that city.  Molly Hatchet was another southern rock band from Jacksonville, also sporting three guitars.  The band formed in 1971 and shares a lot of the inspiration and influence of Skynyrd.  their best selling album was their second one, Flirtin' with Disaster, which peaked at number 19 and became a 2x platinum seller in the United States.  The name of the band comes from the legend of a Salem-era prostitute who supposedly mutilated and decapitated her clients.  The band was not only famous for its music, but for its album cover art.  Fantasy artist Frank Frazetta created the cover, depicting a Viking-like warrior with a winged helmet and battle axe.  Personnel for Flirtin' with Disaster included Danny Joe Brown on vocals, guitarists Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland, Banner Thomas on bass, and Bruce Crump on drums. While Flirtin' with Disaster is the band's most successful album, they also found considerable success with the eponymous debut album released prior to Flirtin' and the third album, “Beatin' the Odds,” released with new front man Jimmy Farrar who replaced Danny Joe Brown who left for a number of reasons including diabetes.  The band would not achieve similar success with its future albums, though Brown would return to the band by their fifth album.  Molly Hatchet remained a popular touring band, though today all the original members have died.  Friend of the show Craig Dale joins us as Wayne brings us this Southern rock classic for the podcast.  Let the Good Times RollWhile this may be considered a deeper cut, the track which closes out the album did receive significant airplay on rock stations when the album came out.  “Give me wine, women, whiskey and rock 'n' roll and let me sleep my days away.”  Flirtin' with DisasterThis is the timeless classic from the album, the title track, and the opening song for side two.  Although this is considered their breakout hit and highest charting, it only went to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song has been used in a number of films and television shows including Suspect Zero, Straw Dogs, My Name is Earl, and King of the Hill.Good Rockin'This deep cut is one in which all band members share writing credits.  It was not released as a single but did appear as a B-side to their second single, “It's All Over Now.”  It is simply a straightforward rock party song - “So if you're feeling good, if you feel alright we're going to have a rock 'n' roll time tonight.”Whiskey ManThe leading track from the album is a well-known Molly Hatchet song, though it failed to chart.  It is an anti-drinking song in which the lyrics discuss the hazards of alcohol.  “You start to get straight, then you get weak, can't you see you're on a losing streak?” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn (from the motion picture “Coal Miner's Daughter”)Sissy Spacek won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn in this biographical drama.  STAFF PICKS:Back On My Feet Again by The BabysBruce brings us the number 33 hit by John Waite and the Babys - their fourth and final top 40 hit.  This is off their album “Union Jacks.”  They opened for Journey on tour, and their keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, would wind up joining Journey when the Babys broke up.  What I Like About You by The RomanticsRob presents a party song that got a lot of airplay with a 50's/60's feel.  It was written in 1979 and it came out on the debut album from the Romantics.  The lead singer, Wally Palmar, is the drummer for the group.  The song only made it to number 49 on the US charts, but its garage band feel and party credentials have given it a timeless quality that fares better the longer it is around.Magic by Olivia Newton JohnLynch tests Wayne's patience with this number 1 hit from Australia's own Olivia Newton John.  It was recorded for the soundtrack to the 1980 musical fantasy film “Xanadu” and was released as its lead single.  The song was written by John Farrar who wrote a number of Olivia Newton John's hits.Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink FloydFriend of the show Craig Dale brings us a haunting tune from the Pink Floyd album “The Wall.”  This track reveals how the horror of war and the blitz formed a brink in the wall of isolation the protagonist forms in his descent into madness.  The child speaking at the front of the song is actually band member Roger Waters' son, Harry.Rockin' Heaven Down by HeartWayne closes out this week's podcast with his favorite Heart song from the album “Bebe Le Strange.”  The track features Nancy Wilson starting the song on a 12-string electric guitar, and Nancy Wilson's fierce vocals.  “Hoot into the night, that look from eye to eye, a flash gets passed around, a band of wild angels rockin' heaven down.”

Believe it or not, this is episode 199! We're one away from our 200th episode! So for this one we are going to celebrate the birthday of one John Farrar by going back in time all the way to the first show he ever attended back in 1998 on the Yield tour. To everyone's surprise, yes... it's an Atlanta show. John has a good story as he'll talk about Pearl Jam being in sort of the downswing of his life after joining a punk band and moving on to other influences. Going to this show was essentially a way for him to say that he went and got to witness it, but it wouldn't be for another 14 years that he'd see them again.  This show marked some semi-notable moments for the Yield album which, as we'll discuss, did not give enough love to it's deeper cuts on this tour. A soundcheck was played before this show that would have certainly been the stuff of legends had we owned a recording. They played Low Light, a song that they never played on this tour, Parting Ways, which was two years away from being on an album, Dead Man with drums and a slowed down version of Blood. The band opted to play No Way for only the 2nd time out of 12 overall in the 24 years since thanks to a guy who kept bringing a sign to every show. They also tagged All Those Yesterdays off of Daughter which saw just a marginal amount more of playing time. It's a small sample size, but this show incorporated a side of Yield that went untouched for most of the early time that Cameron was in this band. Oh yeah, there's also the Yeastie Girlz! We'll talk about how Ed's extremely obscure rap was something that John actually knew about and made him super excited both at the show, and during the episode. In this episode, we're going to do something a little different. Back in December of 2020, we put together a little crossover podcast with a show called Deprogrammed. Deprogrammed is a show where every episode they take a different band and attempt to put together a top 10 starter kit as an introduction to get people into the band. What we did was take that concept and inject it with steroids. We took six passionate and well studied fans of the band and had them delve into the entire band's discography in order to pick what they considered to be the 10 songs that define Pearl Jam fandom. The crew, dubbed the trashy six, is now back and ready to get you hyped for the live shows. In this episode, we take five live compilations: Live On 2 Legs, Live On 10 Legs, Let's Play Two, live renditions on the PJ20 Soundtrack and Touring Band 2000 and make an attempt to come up with 10 live tracks from these releases intended either to get people excited about the upcoming live shows, tell a story about their live history, or introduce first timers to what it's like to see the band. Once again, it's another struggle in order to come up with compromises, but isn't that where the entertainment lies?  Thanks to Deprogrammed Podcast host Justin Wilson for yet again dealing with us insane Pearl Jam people. The six names you'll get to hear in this episode are Live On 4 Legs hosts Randy Sobel and John Farrar, Curtis Hames, Patrick Boegel, Bradley Piasecki and Joey Goodsir. With that said, let's explore this release.https://www.ortussolutions.com/blog/coldbox-660-released Blog - Ben Nadel - Using jSoup To Clean-Up And Normalize HTML In ColdFusion 2021I would love to say that all of the content stored in my blogging database is in pristine, production-ready state. But, it's not. A lot of it has old, historical choices that need to be cleaned-up. And, some formatting choices simply can't be persisted safely (such as CDN - Content-Delivery Network - domains). As such, I will always have to do some degree of pre-render processing on my persisted HTML content before I show it to the user. And, as of yesterday, I started performing that clean-up and sanitization using jSoup in ColdFusion 2021.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4201-using-jsoup-to-clean-up-and-normalize-html-in-coldfusion-2021.htmBlog - Ben Nadel - Returning Permissions With My API Response Payloads In ColdFusionAt InVision, I work on a large AngularJS SPA (Single-Page Application) that is backed by a monolithic ColdFusion API. When the SPA initially loads, it is provided with as JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) payload about the user that is then used to render various Calls-To-Action (CTA) within the View Partials. Lately, however, I've been leaning heavily into returning permissions information right inside my partial API responses. This is proving to reduce the complexity of my view-logic while also making the views more flexible and the application more responsive to changes.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4198-returning-permissions-with-my-api-response-payloads-in-coldfusion.htm Blog - Ben Nadel - Normalizing 0xA0 (No-Break Space) And Other Special Characters Within ColdFusion Form PostsYesterday, I was trying to clean-up some formatting in my comments data-table when I noticed that a lot of comments contained a funky character, . I looked this up in the Unicode Character Table and it turns out to be a No-Break Space. Apparently, some text-editors will just randomly inject this character? Well, I don't want this character in my comments. And, for that matter, I don't want other special characters like "smart quotes" and "bullets" either. As such, I took some time to make my ColdFusion form scope pre-processing a bit more robust in my ColdFusion 2021 blogging platform.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4199-normalizing-0xa0-no-break-space-and-other-special-characters-within-coldfusion-form-posts.htmRelated tweet - https://twitter.com/BenNadel/status/1489960042157719556 Blog - Ben Nadel - Performing A Double-Check Lock Around "Run Once" Code In ColdFusionOne of the wonderful things about ColdFusion is that it comes with a fully-synchronized application setup workflow thanks to the onApplicationStart() life-cycle method in the Application.cfc ColdFusion application framework component. But, not all "setup" code can be run during the bootstrapping of the application. Some setup code needs to be run "on demand" later in the application lifetime. In such scenarios, I almost always reach for a double-check lock pattern of execution. This allows setup code to be synchronized with almost no locking overhead.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4197-performing-a-double-check-lock-around-run-once-code-in-coldfusion.htm Tweet - Zac Spitzer - Links to related tests for tags and functions to the docsAs #lucee has lots of detailed tests, I figured it would be good to add a link to the related tests for tags and functions to the docsi.e. https://docs.lucee.org/reference/tags/zipparam.html https://github.com/lucee/lucee-docs/pull/1225  #cfmlhttps://twitter.com/zackster/status/1490333765633253385https://twitter.com/zacksterTweet - Shawn Holmes - I was interviewed in this Issuehttps://twitter.com/Hanzo55/status/1490101474377887744 https://twitter.com/Hanzo55Blog - James Moberg - ColdFusion CGI Scope is not Read-OnlyI've was been always under the impression that the ColdFusion CGI scope was "read-only". The Beach Boys - TM Song (1976) I am hoping The Beach Boys knew that this song was so terrible that no DJ in his right mind would offer up anything but the "money" song, which, in this case, was a nearly total soul-evisceration of Chuck Berry's wonderful hit. The BB version went to #8, but that was on the heels of their surprisingly popular Endless Summer compilation from the previous year. Even with the little play that starts the song, the whole thing lasted a mercifully short 1:35. I hate BB apologists.  The Beach Boys - Transcendental Meditation (1968) Charles Lloyd and The Beach Boys - TM (Transcendental Meditation) (1972) Backing vocals by Al Jardine, Billy Hinsche (a friend of the band from way back, who was in Dino, Desi, and Billy) Carl Wilson, Michael Love, and Pamela Polland.  Ringo Starr - Back Off Boogaloo (Stop and Smell The Roses Version) (1981) Albert Desalvo - Strangler in the Night (1967) Sleeve reads "...These are my thoughts, feelings and emotions." Albert H. DeSalvo. Astor paid the real serial killer Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler) fifty bucks for the rights to Strangler In The Night which was then ghostwritten and recorded by The Bugs adding the voice of former Boston WEEI reporter Dick Levitan, who actually interviewed DeSalvo a couple of times. Muhammad Ali - Ali's Elusive Dream (1976) If Dan was here, he'd say this was Ali's Rubber Soul.  Wolfman Jack - Free Shots (1975) Cautionary tale about VD. Who was Debbie Sabusawa?  Mike Douglas - Have a Nice Trip (1968) Cautionary tale about drugs.  Reuben Ware - The Fate Of Mary Jo Kopechne (1971) From Wikipedia: On July 18, 1969, Kopechne attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island, off the east coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The celebration was in honor of the dedicated work of the Boiler Room Girls and was the fourth such reunion of Robert Kennedy campaign workers. Robert's surviving brother, Senator Ted Kennedy, was there. Kopechne reportedly left the party with Kennedy at 11:15 p.m.; according to his account, he had offered to drive her to catch the last ferry back to Edgartown, where she was staying. She did not tell her close friends at the party that she was leaving, and she left her purse and keys behind. Kennedy drove the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off a narrow, unlit bridge, which lacked guardrails and was not on the route to Edgartown. The vehicle landed on its roof in Poucha Pond. Kennedy extricated himself from the vehicle and survived, but neglected to inform authorities until the next day of the accident and his inability to rescue Kopechne. Assistant Medical examiner Donald Mills signed a death certificate listing cause of death as accidental drowning. A private funeral for Kopechne was held at St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1969. The service was attended by Kennedy, his wife Joan, his sister-in-law Ethel, and hundreds of onlookers. Kopechne was buried in St. Vincent's Cemetery in Larksville, Pennsylvania, in the parish cemetery on the side of Larksville Mountain. She was among the fifth generation of her family interred in that cemetery. The exact time and cause of Kopechne's death is not positively known, due to conflicting witness testimony at the January 1970 inquest, and lack of an autopsy. Kennedy claimed the accident occurred shortly after he left the party at 11:15 p.m. on July 18. But part-time Deputy Sheriff Christopher "Huck" Look testified that he saw Kennedy's car, with Kopechne and Kennedy in it, around 12:40 a.m. on July 19. John Farrar, the fire rescue captain who retrieved the body on July 19, testified he believed that Kopechne stayed alive for up to half an hour in an air pocket, and ultimately suffocated in the submerged vehicle. A petition to exhume the body for autopsy was denied by a Pennsylvania court.  Kennedy failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. Kopechne's parents said that they learned of their daughter's death from Kennedy before he informed authorities of his involvement. They learned Kennedy had been the driver from wire press releases sometime later. Melinda Marx - How I Wish You Came (1965) Melinda Marx was the daughter of Groucho Marx.  Michael Chaplin - Restless (1965) He was the son of Charlie Chaplin.  Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Put It Where You Want It (1973) From Buffalo, NY. My home town.  Ray Manzarek - The Whole Thing Started With Rock and Roll (1974) Scott Walker -The Plague (1970) Ike and Tina Turner - Sweet Rhode Island Red (1974) Paul Revere and the Raiders - Swim (1964) The Boones - Please Mister Postman (1974) The Hollies - The Baby (1972) The Royal Guardsmen - Squeaky Vs. The Black Knight (1966) Same catalog number as "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron". This version was issued only in Canada and only for approx. 2 weeks while licensing issues were being worked out using the "Snoopy" name. Art Linkletter - Dear Mom and Dad (1969) Autry Inman with Bob Luman - Ballad of Two Brothers (1968) Frank Lyndon - Fonzie Meets Kotter's Sweathogs (At The School Dance) (1976) Herman Silvers & Cornell Tanassy - Hello Ronnie, Good-Bye Jimmy (1980) James Brown and the J.B.s - Gimme Some Skin (1977) Johnny Cash & Rosey Nix - Father and Daughter (1974) In the 1980 Rolling Stone Record Guide, this album is described as "weird". It's not. It sounds like a gap-filler. Johnny doesn't sound his best here singing this Cat Stevens cover with his daughter, who also cannot seem to sing. She was the daughter of June Carter and her second husband (of three), Edwin "Rip" Nix. I tried to find his football card from his time with the Tennessee Vols, but I don't think football cards were a thing? Edwin and June divorced in 1966. In around 1985, Edwin married Ira Pilkinton.  During her first marriage, to singer Carl Smith, she had a daughter, Rebecca Carlene Smith, professionally known as Carlene Carter, a country musician. Her song "Every Little Thing" appeared on my band "East of Idaho"'s setlist during the first year of our existence. She married Nick Lowe, who I've featured on another episode, and appeared in his wonderfully droll video for "Cruel To Be Kind".  Wilt Chamberlain - That's Easy To Say (1960) The Millennium - There Is Nothing More To Say (1968) Genesis - Apocalypse in 9/8 (1972) The Free Design - Friendly Man (1971) You know I love The Free Design more than almost any group I've discovered on my show. Here are three of their best songs.  The Free Design - Love Me (1971) The Free Design - A Leaf Has Veins (1968)

This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #57. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. W. Kent Fuchs, President at the University of Florida! We are joined by special guest host John Farrar, Director of Education at Google. We talk to Dr. Fuchs about the impact of the University of Florida, both on students and the local economy. Kent discusses the importance of student belonging, which includes the more than 1000 clubs created by students to create community. Add to this the discussion around marketing, messaging, and the goal of the University of Florida to get to 10,000 online students or more. We ask Kent about future population goals, you might be surprised by his answer. Kent is very clear about creating an environment at UF that transcends the expected and creates learning opportunities by matching students up with others from different backgrounds and countries when possible. This is NOT the episode to miss. Dr. Kent Fuchs became the 12th President of the University of Florida in January 2015. Building on many years of excellence and focused leadership, the university has reached its goal of joining the nation's top-ten public research universities. Dr. Fuchs has since set UF on a path to joining the top-five public research universities and becoming the nation's number one university for comprehensive excellence. UF is working toward those goals through the creation of 500 new faculty positions, the addition of advanced and beautiful university facilities, and an ongoing $3 billion fundraising campaign. In 1817 a young woman appeared in the English village of Almondsbury, speaking a strange language and seeking food and shelter. She revealed herself to be an Eastern princess, kidnapped by pirates from an exotic island. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of Princess Caraboo, who was both more and less than she seemed. We'll also discover a June Christmas and puzzle over some monster soup. Intro: In 1988, Martine Tischer proposed wrapping gifts in uncut U.S. currency. Spidey sense. Gut feel. Whatever you call it, it’ll make or break the most important decisions in your life. The most successful executives I coach have it in spades. We're talking about intuition, and digging into what it is and how it actually works.Oprah has it.Steve Jobs had it.Mark Zuckerberg has it but recently didn’t listen to it and paid a huge price.Elon Musk made the same mistake. How—And Where—Intuition Actually WorksHere’s how to make your intuition stronger right now. My friends at NowSourcing have created a handy infographic, be sure to check it out here.First, let’s consider how—and where—humans think. As I outlined in a previous blog, human beings actually have three brains. Since both our hearts and our intestines have neural tissue, we have the heart-brain, the gut-brain and the brain that sits in our cranium (or, if you count the one that sits in our cranium as three—reptile, mammalian, and human neo-cortex—then we actually have five brains!).Where You Think:Reptilian Brain: InstinctAn innate inclination toward a particular behavior in response to a certain stimulusIt’s hardwired in the body from birth to keep us “not dead”Examples: we pull away from something hot, run from danger, etc.Mammalian Brain: Where much intuition, or “gut feeling”, occursA natural, thoughtless process which requires no analysis or deep thinkingUnconsciously developed over time from our experiences and beliefBiases operate here and are unconscious—which is why they can be problematicExamples: trusting someone that’s similar to you, feeling good around someone, etc.Prefrontal Cortex: Analytical thinkingIntentional, organized, conscious thoughtsUsed for planning, problem-solving, decision makingSome biases operate here too, such as making decisions based on a limited data set, or past experiencesExample: weighing the pros and cons of a decision before making it, analyzing potential return on investment before sponsoring a project, etc.Check out these famous examples of intuition—what parts of the brain were involved?44 BCE: Calpurnia, the wife of Julius Caesar, dreams of her husband’s assassination and urges him not to go to the Senate, where he goes anyway and is killedIt’s not magic: Calpurnia was unconsciously reacting to the tensions and signs of political dissent brewing in the Roman Empire [some heart brain, some gut brain, some reptilian and mammalian brain activation]1936: On a hunch, automobile tycoon Charles Howard purchases an underweight colt named Seabiscuit, who goes on to become one of the greatest racehorses in historyIt’s not magic: Howard’s business savvy and military cavalry training gave him the experience to recognize a gifted horse and a sound financial bet [some gut brain, some mammalian and prefrontal cortex brain activation]1962: After being rejected by dozens of publishers, Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time is picked up by John Farrar of Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, which had not published children’s books before [some heart brain, some gut brain, some mammalian and possibly prefrontal cortex brain activation]Most cultures today worship the intellect—the prefrontal cortex functions—and thus often unintentionally condition children to discount their intuition. So let’s consider Albert Einstein and how when he discovered the theory of relativity he said (to paraphrase) “First I felt it, then I saw it, then I could explain it.” Sounds like a bunch of five brain activity to me!How Intuition WorksYour intuition is much faster than your analytical mind and relies on feelings—note above I refer to the neural tissue we all have in both our gut and our heart. We often hear about women’s intuition and how it’s stronger than men’s. Why? Two reasons: first, the insula in the female human brain is larger than in the male. The insula is often called the seat of intuition in human beings, and it’s where hurt feelings fester and hunches often spring from. Second, our female ancestors needed to ensure not only their own survival but also their children’s. While the males were often single-tasking such as hunting (with their larger amygdalas), the females were multi-tasking. The females were caring for the children, watching for danger as they gathered food, tracking non-verbal cues from others, and organizing environmental input and information.3 Steps To Optimize Your Intuition1-Notice your body’s reactions (changes in heartbeat, breathing, muscle tension).2-Understand that your intuition wants whatever you value most (happiness, health, prosperity)–your intuition could be signaling that even though a decision seems logical, it won’t bring you closer to your core goals.3-Likewise notice that your intuition is wiser than our ego, which may want you to make a specific decision for a certain gain, yet that gain might come at too high a cost—and your intuition will be trying to put on the brakes. So how do you balance intuition and logic?Look at the meaning you are making about a certain situation to check your assumptions.Look at your organismic rights and if they will be honored and expanded by that decision.Check yourself for unconscious biases that might be getting in the way.Follow your intuition when:Working in rapidly changing, high-stakes environmentsPerforming tasks you have done many times beforeBrainstorming or discussing business with partners or coworkersFollow your analytical brain when:Working in compliance scenarios or when under public or regulatory scrutinyDoing something you have never done beforeHiring new talent or delegating work to employees“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs, 2005 Stanford Commencement speechThe Net-NetIntuition is a combination of the five functioning brains you haveIntuition can be cultivated and improved by paying attention to the input your brains are offering youYour intuition might just be trying to tell you how to make better decisions—are you ready to listen?Resources Mentioned:The ArticleNowSourcing Intuition infographic 3 Brains blog postBiases Neural tissue we all have in both our gut and our heartOrganismic Rights infographicCognitive Bias CodexEmotional Resilience AssessmentLeadership Experience AssessmentGrowth AssessmentContact ChristineYou’re busy growing. This week we’re going way back to the legendary January 17, 1992 show -- AKA “Vault #1.” In fact, this is the earliest show we’ve covered on the podcast so far! The band trekked across North America in support of Ten throughout the Fall and early Winter of 1991. After a two-week break in the beginning of January 1992, the boys returned to Seattle for a homecoming show at the legendary Moore Theatre. The band sounds incredible from start to finish. Ed’s voice is in perfect shape after 14 days off and the entire band seems to be relaxed and loving the atmosphere of playing in front of an energetic hometown crowd of about 1,350. The footage used in the “Even Flow” music video was professionally filmed at this show, while a number of famous early photos by Lance Mercer were captured here as well. A rough audience recording of the show was all that existed among bootleg collections for nearly 20 years, until the band decided to open up the mysterious “Vault” in 2011. A remastered version of the original recording was circulated at the PJ20 festival, much to the delight of diehard fans and those aware of the magic of this show. Single CDs in cardboard sleeves simply titled “VAULT #1” were distributed at the destination weekend. This show also marked the first time the band covered The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” although the song is omitted from the vault recording. John Farrar and Chris Buckley team up to host their first show together, exploring this early performance that offers a glimpse into the band’s early era and formative years just before they exploded to superstardom. SURPRISE! With all of the cryptic clues and messages we've been posting on our social media pages, it's all led to this - the return of Live On 4 Legs Podcast! We thank you for your patience while we've been on hiatus, but we're back and ready to rock! This week we'll introduce one of our new co-hosts John Farrar and dig into a show that has made a major impact on this band over the years, Soldier Field from 1995. There was a lot going on with the band at the time - the fallout from the Ticketmaster lawsuit, the fallout from Eddie's food poisoning incident in San Francisco, No Code's presence looming and trying to follow up what would be the final Grateful Dead performance with Jerry Garcia. The band was handed a major task on a major stage and guess what? They hit a home ru... err, okay NFL Stadium, they scored a touchdown. We'll talk a lot about the raw sound of 1995 and how the band was gelling with Jack Irons at the time. Songs such as Corduroy, Habit and Not For You were major players, but they also pulled out some weirder stuff such as Everyday People by Sly and the Family Stone. That mixed with Let Me Love Open The Door made for an unforgettable moment on this night. So we're back, and expect us here on our new release day every Wednesday for now on instead of Friday. For those who wish to pledge to our Patreon account, please head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs to help out the show. More exclusive content coming very soon so keep your head up!

I have five words to sell you on this episode: Stone Gossard shows his breasts. Yes, this is something that happened. Unfortunately, no one caught this clearly on video so you will have to take John Farrar's word on it. He attended the show and joined us as a guest. So... why did Stone reveal his nipples to a Charlotte crowd? After Ed speaks proudly of the band's touring album Lightning Bolt spending 2 straight weeks as the highest selling record, he claims they didn't have to show their tits in order to do it. With possibly a little egging on from our guest who happened to be on the rail that night, Stone obliges and makes sure that the band would have the top selling album for 3 straight weeks. Outside of some major Gossard boobage, this was a solid show that seems to get overlooked by other Lightning Bolt tour shows that surrounded it. The band debuted opening track Getaway on this night which brings up good debate on why the song was a bit of a disappointment as a live track. This show also closes out with an uncommon appearance of All Along The Watchtower. We're getting closer to record store day, so that means our Easy Street Records episode will be hitting Patreon next week! The time machine this week takes us to our first trip to the 90's where Pearl Jam were smack dab in their prime. This Atlanta show is famous for so many different reasons. First, it was broadcast live for free on radio stations across America where young teens and college kids had multiple tape cassettes handy. Second, parts of this show was featured on the highly popular 3-disc Dissident single at a time where boots were slowly starting to become a normal thing. Last but not least, this is the final show before the official death of Kurt Cobain. Eddie dedicates Go to him and we relive some of the news and rumors that surrounded the story of his demise. Also, lots and lots of love for Vs. here as the band was supporting the album on tour, but with Vitalogy on the horizon we get to hear some special little surprises that gave hints to what the album would eventually offer. Our Patreon donor John Farrar joins the show to discuss listening to it on the radio and swapping out cassettes!

Hosts Briana Phipps & Jacque Borowski discuss the 2007 Broadway Musical Xanadu with special guests Edward Carter Simon & Tiffany Michaela Jones. Xanadu is a musical comedy with a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, based on the 1980 cult classic film of the same name, which was, in turn, inspired by the 1947 Rita Hayworth film Down to Earth,[1] a sequel to the 1941 movie Here Comes Mr. Jordan, which was an adaptation of the play Heaven Can Wait byHarry Segall. The title is a reference to the poem Kubla Khan, or A Vision in a Dream. A Fragment, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Xanadu is the name of the Chinese province where Khan establishes his pleasure garden in the poem. The musical opened on Broadway in 2007 and ran for over 500 performances. It earned an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and a Drama Desk Award for Best Book. It was also nominated for Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book. The US Tour o

At the age of five, poet Stephanie Strickland and her sister received a book from their grandmother that included a poem by John Farrar called “Serious Omission.” I know that there are dragons St. George’s, Jason’s, too, And many modern dragons With scales of green and blue;   But though I’ve been there many times And carefully looked through, I cannot find a dragon In the cages at the zoo! The poem stayed with Strickland.  “What is the serious omission?” she asks.  “To not be able to find that dragon?  To fail to discriminate the hugely many implicate orders of life?” These questions, not to mention dragons themselves, drive Strickland’s new book of poems, Dragon Logic (Ahsahta Press, 2013).  Her fiercely intelligent and morally acute work captures e-dragons and sea dragons, as well as a beast she calls the “Hidden Dragon of Unstable Ruin.”  The poems even offer “Dragon Maps,” that take “catastrophic forms and safepaths,” finding and figuring their way through the physical, mechanical, virtual, mythical, chimerical, and hypothetical environments we now inhabit. And if you find yourself wondering just what a dragon is, that’s the right question.  “Dragons are mythical and abstract,” explains Strickland, “mythic embodiments of abstract power, from the snake in Eden, to devouring sea monsters, to the latest special FX apocalyptic creation from Hollywood. The dragon hunt that matters for me is tracking the beast as it slips, dizzyingly, from real to configurational (electronically generated) space, always aware that where we live, in either case, is the belly of this beast.” *Photograph courtesy of Star Black (copyright).
