Orlando City ended its losing streak in Toronto but extended a winless skid to three matches after managing only a 1-1 road draw. It wasn't a terrible result and one point sure beats none, but the Lions still don't quite seem back on track yet. Still, we've got a lot to say about what happened in Canada on Saturday. We also pick our Man of the Match and it's unanimous again this week. Before we get to that, however, news broke as we were just getting set to record that Chris Mueller is leaving Orlando City at the end of the season on a free transfer. This is obviously not an ideal situation and the club did try to negotiate a deal with Cash, but alas, a fan favorite will be heading to Europe. You're up next, Silvester van der Water! The long-awaited new Orlando City overlords are officially in place as the Wilf family's ownership of the club was announced Wednesday. We look forward to seeing how their stewardship of the club unfolds and if they really will spend some money on talent to compete with the top clubs in MLS and the NWSL. The Orlando Pride appear to be in free fall after a 2-1 loss in Portland that was nowhere near as close as the final score indicates. The Pride were out-shot 20-6 and Ashlyn Harris again won NWSL Save of the Week for a penalty kick save that prevented the result from being worse on the road. Meanwhile, Manchester United is courting Marc Skinner, which can't be helping anything at the moment. Can the Pride right the ship? It doesn't feel like it right now but we certainly hope so. Matt Ralph from Brotherly Game stopped by to help us preview the Philadelphia Union's visit to Exploria Stadium tonight. Big thanks to Matt for his expertise on the Union and we look forward to seeing how our key match-ups and score predictions compare to his when it's all said and done. International soccer is in full swing. The USMNT played poorly and got a result. The USWNT played even worse and did not. The men now enter the Gold Cup knockout round against a Jamaica side that I watched in person three times in the last week or so. The women have to regroup and beat New Zealand and Australia to assure themselves of a spot in the knockout round of the Olympic tournament. Daryl Dike and Alex Morgan both started this week but neither dented the score sheet. This week's mailbag wants to know about Josef Martinez in Atlanta Orlando, what to do with season tickets when you don't live within a thousand miles of Exploria, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for both Philadelphia tonight and the trip to New York City FC this weekend. That's all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 255 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City earned a hard-fought road point and you can get a pretty good nap during Nani's penalty run-ups. Also the Pride are not good at the moment. 52:02 - Matt Ralph joins the fun and gives us some in-depth background on the Union ahead of tonight's match. 1:20:05 - The Gold Cup, the Olympics, the Florida Cup, our mailbag, and prediction time for both Orlando City games coming up. Alex begins the show by recapping the week in Chicago soccer news, including his thoughts on the NWSL's lack of transparency on their investigation of the racial profiling of Sarah Gorden's boyfriend in Houston and what he'd like to see from the winless Fire this weekend at home vs Philadelphia. Speaking of which, Alex is then joined by Matt Ralph, the managing editor of Brotherly Game (the Union site at SB Nation) to update all things Philly: their CONCACAF Champions League run, their early season struggles, the impact of Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie's departures and more! We’re a week out from the MLS is Back Tournament but there’s still a lot of uncertainty whether this event can even take place. With FC Dallas players testing positive for COVID-19, teams having to push back their flights to Orlando, and spiking infection rates in the state of Florida, the return of Major League Soccer is anything but a sure thing right now. We invited Matt Ralph from Brotherly Game to chat with us about Group A and the state of this tournament in general as it approaches. We also discuss Ali Krieger’s two negative coronavirus tests following her positive test last week and ponder whether unreliable testing might have put an end to the Orlando Pride’s 2020 season. We also touch on the start of the NWSL Challenge Cup and some of the early surprises there. Our listener mail this week asked who would play us in a movie about The Mane Land, what we should call the new series between Orlando City and Inter Miami, and what our favorite soccer kits are. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We also move forward in our Marvel Cinematic Universe rewatch with Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther — two of the best films in the series. Be warned, we babble about them for much too long, so this pod might take you a few commutes to get through. Stay safe and enjoy the show. Here’s how show No. 203 went down: 0:15 - The Lions are in the bubble and some of the MLS teams had to postpone their travel. Will there even be a tournament? Wear a mask! Also: Ali Krieger is negative for COVID-19, and the NWSL Challenge Cup is underway. 27:35 - Matt Ralph joins in to discuss Group A and whether or not MLS can actually pull off the MLS is Back Tournament. He also provides some background on what the folks up in the northeast have gone through during this pandemic. 55:48 - The mailbag segment puts us on the spot (as usual) and we gush about a couple of excellent MCU movies. Adam is off celebrating the birth of his second child, so you're stuck with Jason and Ben for this episode. There has been so much soccer in these past six days that the US Open Cup match against Christos FC feels like years ago, and not just a week. We talk about that game, about the class that Lloyd Sam and Ian Harkes brought when they subbed on, and how Julian Buescher's game looked great on paper, but was different in real life. We also have to talk about United 2-0 loss to Toronto FC, and how Steve Birnbaum had a bad game on both sides of the ball. We talk about this result in the context of the team's season so far, and what performances can be salvaged out of a loss like this. Finally, we have to talk about the rumors swirling around Alhaji Kamara and Jose Ortiz; and that's just the first segment! In the second segment we talk about the upcoming game against Atlanta United, and how this team is a very bad matchup for United right now. Their defense can be had, especially with Carlos Carmona out, but United will also have to deal with the fact that Josef Martinez is back. We discuss who each team might rotate in and rotate out, before wondering overall if United can stay close enough in the East to allow midyear signings to help. In the third segment we welcome back Eugene Rupinski of Brotherly Game to talk about the weekend match against the Philadelphia Union. We ask hom about their center backs and their midfield, some United alums in Charlie Davies and Chris Pontius, and some midseason changes Eugene would want to see. Finally, we end with the poor home records of both teams and how Ben Olsen should gameplan against the Union. Give it a listen!
Well, that sucked but we have to talk about it. Adam, Jason, and Ben are back to talk about D.C. United's 1-0 loss to the Montreal Impact, in a performance that disappointed everyone. We talk about the goal and the entire flaccid performance, as well as how the team deflated after a decent first eight minutes. We bring up how Sebastien LeToux may not have been suited for the forward role in this match, the up and down play of Taylor Kemp, and the poor all-around performance of Jared Jeffrey. We end by talking about who may need to step up and step into the lineup to try and right the ship. In the second segment we bring on Eugene Rupinski of The Brotherly Game to talk about the Philadelphia Union. We talk about their game against the LA Galaxy and ask whether they are figuring things out. We have to talk about the play of CJ Sapong, Alejandro Bedoya, and Chris Pontius, before diving into their defense and the benching of Keegan Rosenberry. Finally, we try to assign some blame for the winless streak before getting a custom gameplan for the Union. Give it a listen!
We don’t have a game to break down this week because of Mother Nature, but to make up for it, we’re bringing you an extra guest! Former Orlando City goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo — now the club’s sideline analyst and community ambassador — joins us to discuss his new roles with the club, his time with the Lions, and his time in Jacksonville. And we also welcome Eugene Rupinski from The Brotherly Game to give us the Philadelphia perspective on the Lions vs. the Union this Saturday. We may not have a game to recap, but we sure do have a lot of news. Orlando City goalkeeper Joe Bendik extended his contract through 2020, Seb Hines underwent knee surgery, the Orlando Pride opened preseason camp and might sign Brazilian superstar Marta, OCB got a new Brazilian defender from the club’s partnership with Atletico Paranaense, and we discuss the expansion battle between the United clubs from Minnesota and Atlanta. After Miguel talks to us about his gig and what it was like to face his old Orlando City teammates, Eugene jumped on and told us a bit about this year’s edition of the Union and what we can expect for Saturday. Spoiler: the Union are still a pretty good soccer team. And of course, we can’t possibly sign off without our key match-ups and final predictions, which you absolutely shouldn’t use as a basis for any wagering. Here’s the show this week: 0:13- Orlando City gets a snow day, Bendik gets a new deal, Hines gets his knee repaired, Pride get started, OCB gets a defender, and Minnesota gets a new MLS record it probably didn’t want. 37:46- Miguel Gallardo checks in with us and tells us what he’ll be doing this season for the club. He also talks about what we might see this weekend. 53:19- Eugene Rupinski gives us the 411 on the Union so far this season. 1:06:12- Key match-ups and predictions! Learn more about your ad choices. Filibuster is back yet again to fill that gap in your ears. Adam and Jason fly mano-a-mano to break down D.C. United's 1-1 draw with the Montreal Impact. We talk about how we felt about the game, whether this looked more like a 4-3-3 than a 4-1-4-1, and the performance of Patrick Mullins. We have to talk about Luciano Acosta's day, and whether the draw wipes out all of the positives of the game. We then bust open the Twitterbox to talk about MLS's national broadcast policies. We then bring on Evan Villella from Brotherly Game to break down the Philadelphia Union coming to RFK Stadium to face D.C. United. We analyze and must-win game for D.C. United and ask Evan to gameplan the
With a win in this year's Atlantic Cup already notched, the Filibuster crew is here to talk about it. Adam, Ben, and Jason are here to talk about whether D.C. United's game against the New York Red Bulls was the most complete performance of the year. We talk about the contrasting styles of the Red Bulls' tactics versus D.C. United's tactics, the out of character game by referee Silviu Petrescu, and we compare the difference between this year's central midfield (Marcelo Sarvas and Nick DeLeon) versus last year's central midfield (Davy Arnaud and Perry Kitchen). Finally, we talk about whether Fabian Espindola should replace Alvaro Saborio, and thank Jesse Marsch for leaving Lloyd Sam on the bench. We then welcome on Eugene Rupinski from Brotherly Game to talk about United's Friday matchup against the Philadelphia Union. We have to start by asking about Chris Pontius, before marvelling that the Union are good so far this year. We ask Eugene what the biggest thing is that is working for the team right, and ask him to shed some light on their defensive rookies, Keegan Rosenberry and Josh Yaro. We address the Union's central midfield, the selection of players Earnie Stewart has created, and how Bethlehem Steel is working. And, before we say goodbye to Eugene and ask him to gameplan the Union, we had to ask him about Zlatan. Give it a listen!
The regular season home finale has come and gone and Orlando City extended its winning streak to five games, sending the huge Citrus Bowl crowd of 40,000+ home with a 2-1 win over New York City FC. The Lions still have the tiniest of chances to sneak into the MLS playoffs as an expansion team, but honestly, finishing ahead of NYCFC feels just as good. We're here to break down that win over our fellow 2015 expansion team and we'll talk about our key performances and our selections for Man of the Match. We also discuss the newly announced NWSL team, Orlando Pride, which the club announced on Tuesday, as well as the latest rumors swirling around about a potential trade that will bring Alex Morgan to the City Beautiful. We like the idea. TML's own Jeff Milby stops by to give us his postmortem on Louisville City FC's season, and how the affiliation worked (or didn't) for both clubs. And we talk to Eugene Rupinski of The Brotherly Game about this weekend's upcoming regular season finale at Philadelphia Union. It's a jam-packed show! Oh, and we give our key match-ups and final score predictions. Here's the rundown: 0:26- Our thoughts on an exciting 2-1 win over NYCFC and whether two key balls crossed the goal line. 27:23- Jeff Milby gives us the LCFC season overview from Louisville. 40:16- Eugene hops on and talks a little Philadelphia Union with us. 53:18- Key match-ups and score predictions for the game in Philadelphia.
