We're in our off-season podcast schedule, which means things can be a bit unpredictable, except that you'll get a new show at least monthly before the season starts back up. We didn't have a ton of news, but circumstances warranted an episode, because we're about to lose one of our favorite people. After we discussed Orlando's signing Monday afternoon of Wake Forest defender Zara Chavoshi, the first rookie signed since the NWSL did away with the draft, we have a special guest. Longtime Orlando City/Orlando Pride Director of Communications Jackie Maynard is leaving the club after nine seasons to take on a new challenge. She's going out a champion, but she's always been one in our book, as she's been one of the best PR people on the MLS or NWSL side for years. She has set up so many of our interviews over the years and listened in on them, so it was only right that we let her take the microphone for herself before she leaves the City Beautiful. Jackie discusses her career in Orlando, how the club and women's soccer have evolved in her time here, some of the crazy, behind-the-scenes stuff she's had to deal with on the road, and much more. Big thanks to Jackie for all her help through the years and our deepest wishes for success in the next step of the journey, which she is not at liberty to discuss publicly just yet as of this writing, but it's a nice gig and we're happy for her. After our chat with Jackie, we dive into our mailbagbox, which asks us what position group we'd most like the Pride to address this off-season and makes us pick an over/under on Orlando goals in 2025. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. After the mailbagbox, we discuss the Pride re-signing team captain Marta for two more seasons. As the Brazilian soccer icon prepares for her 39th birthday, she also readies herself for the first season of a new two-year deal with Orlando that will likely see out her illustrious playing career. Marta was remarkable in 2024, helping her team win two trophies, and if she can keep playing at that level, she's welcome here for as long as she likes. Here's how Episode 73 went down: 0:15 – The Pride add their first rookie since the NWSL dropped the draft. Welcome to Orlando, Zara Chavoshi! 8:14 – Jackie Maynard jumps on with us to discuss her nine-year career with Orlando City SC/Orlando Pride and we can't thank her enough for her time on this show and her help throughout the years. 33:47 - We open up the mailbagbox and then discuss Marta's return for two more seasons with Orlando.

Our guest for Part II is Japanese American Jewish author Emi Watanabe Cohen. Her debut novel was The Lost Ryū (about dragons), and her sophomore novel is Golemcrafters (about golems, of course).  I loved The Lost Ryū so much that I volunteered to review it for The Sydney Taylor Shmooze blog, because I wanted to point out a moment of allyship that touched my soul. Then, along came Golemcrafters. I must admit I was wary at first, because golems are kind of overdone, but this book drew me in even more than The Lost Ryū, with how much it mirrored my own emotional response to antisemitism. Both of these books are like hands reaching out to hold yours. I highly recommend that you reach back, and read both books yourself. Creature Double Feature Part I features an interview with Deke Moulton about her vampire and werewolf middle grade novels, Don't Want to Be Your Monster and Benji Zeb Is a Ravenous Werewolf, which make great companions to Emi's books. Marie Mercado had no plans of becoming a “professional ice cream lady.” She had her sights set on the stage. “I wanted to be an opera singer,” Mercado said. “I did perform. I did shows in New York. I moved to Japan, I did a couple of performances there. I was there for a year and then I was going to move to Germany, but then I'm like, ‘OK, let me pay down some student loans. Let me figure out my life, get everything settled, get everything squared away before I move.'” That decision brought the South Florida native to Orlando. Mercado said she met her partner in the City Beautiful, who introduced her to the idea of running her own business. “When you're a musician you work 90% of your time alone, right, actually. So I like the idea of building my own community,” she said. Mercado looked to her childhood when she decided to start her own business. Growing up in South Florida, she said her neighbors would give her family a glut of mangos every year. “My dad one day was like, ‘Hey, why don't we turn this into ice cream so we can enjoy this for a couple more months instead of trying to eat this all in one day,'” she said. Mercado said she was always dabbling in the kitchen as a child, so her parents thought making ice cream would be a perfect fit for her. “I started my career as an ice cream lady at 7 years old,” she said. This ultimately led her to open the Greenery Creamery in downtown Orlando in 2018. “I consider myself a professional ice cream lady and I have a very important job,” she said. “I have to provide ice cream options for people in the community.” Mercado takes the job seriously. She tries to make sure that everyone can have something in her ice cream shops — offering vegan and allergen-friendly options. “People don't realize consciously that ice cream is a way to create core memories. So people don't think ‘Oh, it's baby's first steak.' They think, ‘Baby's first ice cream,'” she said. Greenery Creamery offers a wide variety of flavors, some familiar and some that are a little more outside the box of traditional ice cream. In 2023, Mercado took her passion for ice cream in a different direction. She opened Sampaguita in Orlando's Mills 50 District. “I say Greenery Creamery is a journey of self-expression and Sampaguita to is an exploration of self-identity,” Mercado said. Sampaguita is focused on offering Filipino-American-inspired flavors, a nod to Mercado's Filipino-American heritage. Sampaguita is the Filipino name for the Jasmine flower, which is also the national flower of the Philippines. “Jasmine flower means love and purity, guidance and truth and so it just has so many layers to it. So I said, ‘Yes, this is the name that fits everything,'” Mercado said. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Mercado shares more of her journey from opera to ice cream. She also talks about some of her experiments with ice cream flavors and shares some frozen treats with Candace Campos. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What makes a city beautiful, livable, walkable, and simply a desirable place to call home? And on the other side, what mistakes can destroy a city's appeal to residents, visitors, and investors? For the last six years, Cal Poly Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning Dave Amos has been exploring answers to these questions through his hugely popular YouTube channel, City Beautiful. City Beautiful embraces a mantra: that cities are amazing, and then seeks to understand what makes some cities succeed while others stumble. Amos' inquisitive, fast-paced, and approachable style has earned his channel more than 651,000 subscribers, with his videos about cities and city planning regularly attracting millions of views. Amos has explored what happened when cities banned cars, why high-rise public housing projects were once thought to be part of the answer to America's chronic housing projects, and even what urban planning looking like in the former Soviet Union. With an expert panel, we explore the factors that shape the cities we call home. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints learn early on about the murder of their faith's founder, Joseph Smith. They know that, on June 27, 1844 (179 years ago this month), he and his brother Hyrum were gunned down by a mob at a jail in Carthage, Ill. They know that no one was ever convicted of the killings. And they know that the ugliness that took place outside their “City Beautiful” marked the beginning of the end to the Saints' stay in nearby Nauvoo. What many insiders and outsiders alike either don't know or fail to recognize, however, is that Smith's slaying was not only a religious martyrdom but also a political assassination. They forget that the church leader was a candidate for the U.S. presidency at the time of his death and was the first American to be assassinated while running for the White House. On this week's show, with the help of Benjamin Park, author of the acclaimed “Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier,” we revisit the mystique surrounding Carthage, how it happened, why it happened, what can be learned from it.

Orlando City remained unbeaten in preseason with a comeback draw against the Colorado Rapids this week. We didn't get to see the match or get many details, but if you think that's going to stop us from talking about it, you grossly underestimate our ability to talk about things. The Lions also welcomed one of their missing pieces, as Rafael Santos has arrived in the City Beautiful, so that's good. The Lions and Pride are still without a key player each as of this writing, but they'll be along at some point. We think. In the meantime, Orlando City signed one of the two rookies in camp who weren't already signed. Abdi Salim has earned his first professional contract and he signed that on Tuesday. We await the expected signing of forward Duncan McGuire. If you're wondering about Shak Mohammed, he's already signed by being a Generation Adidas player. The U.S. Men's National Team is returning to Exploria Stadium, looking to stay perfect in the Purple Palace. We discuss the Yanks coming to town in March to face El Salvador in Concacaf Nations League play and why it's important for USMNT fans to get their tickets as early as possible. The Orlando Pride sustained a major injury blow during preseason camp in Port St. Lucie, as defender Carrie Lawrence suffered a torn ACL and is out indefinitely. While we don't know how long indefinitely means — exactly — we do know that torn ACLs right before the season are not a great thing. The Pride also got their regular-season and NWSL Challenge Cup schedule for 2023. We welcome the schedule makers back from whatever pocket dimension they visit during that way-too-long process, even if they did stick the Pride on the road against the defending league champs on opening day. Again. Finally, we looked in our mailbag, in which our listeners asked us about what player's name they should get on their new kit, the new Flash movie, pregame/postgame/goal music in the stadium, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 326 went down: 0:15 - The Lions keep racking up preseason results — this time with more Beefy Swede in the lineup. 20:43 - The Pride can't seem to go into the season without a knee getting torn up. 41:11 - The mailbagbox is full again and we're having way too much fun, even if it means we're being way too silly. Orlando City has begun playing matches — well, preseason matches, anyway. The Lions have two scrimmages under their belts so far and have won both by a combined score of 5-1. While it's true that one of those opponents so far was a college side, the Lions have not leaned on some of their best players thus far and have even participated with both starting center backs not seeing the field. We start off this week's show with a discussion of the results against Minnesota United and Florida International University and some of the quirks of the formation we've seen thus far. Does it mean a shape change? Are Antonio Carlos and Robin Jansson even necessary with Wilder Cartagena and rookie Abdi Salim back there? Well, the latter question is dumb, but we at least have some talking points from the first two scrimmages. The Orlando Pride now have a preseason schedule. Like the Lions, the club's NWSL side will only open one preseason match to the public. We'll talk about the entire preseason slate, the match folks can attend, and an open training session and chalk talk for Pride season ticket members. Orlando waved goodbye to a pair of defenders this week, trading the rights to Courtney Petersen to the Houston Dash for even more Allocation Money, while sending off free agent Toni Pressley to whatever is next for the last of the players from the inaugural 2016 Orlando Pride roster. The Central Florida Crusaders kicked off their inaugural season this weekend, with a loss on the women's side and a win for the men's team. Finally, we looked in our mailbag, in which our listeners asked us about soccer's numbering system, which awards show we'd most like to attend, and whether we are all in on Jesse Marsch for the USMNT. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 325 went down: 0:15 - The Lions' preseason is underway for real now with the arrival of scrimmages. We've got position changes and results to talk about. 17:45 - The Pride are in Port St. Lucie for training and team bonding but soon they'll be back in the City Beautiful and we now know their entire preseason slate. We also say goodbye to a couple of former Orlando defenders. 31:46 - The mailbagbox is full again and we always like that. Plus, the Central Florida Crusaders have kicked off their first season. This week, it's all about the newbies! Both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride welcomed some new faces to the City Beautiful and we're here to talk about it. We started off with the news of Rodrigo Schlegel signing a new contract just one year after signing his last deal. Essentially, it potentially keeps the Argentine defender in Orlando for an additional year and he likely gets a bump in pay for services rendered. Hey, he earned it! Also on the MLS side, the Lions added two important cogs to the 2023 machine in U22 Initiative forward Romiro Enrique and box-to-box midfielder Dagur Dan Thorhallsson. While I was disappointed that “Dagur” doesn't mean “dagger” in Icelandic, his name is still pretty metal and fans can look forward to seeing the versatile player on the pitch this season. As far as Enrique is concerned, the Lions have obviously decided to go for young talent over experience in replacing departing forwards Alexandre Pato, Benji Michel, and Tesho Akindele. Moving to the Orlando Pride side, the team has a new boss. Haley Carter has the credentials as the club's new vice president of soccer operations and general manager. Now, we'll get to see how her experience translates to the position. Meanwhile, the Pride added goalkeeper Carly Nelson to replace 2022 starter Erin McLeod on the roster. And speaking of the roster, the Pride opened preseason camp and we went through all of the position groups. Finally, we looked in our mailbag and, surprisingly, it was empty. That almost never happens! We got to leave work early as a result. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 324 went down: 0:15 - The Lions continue their preseason and some new faces have been added to the mix. There's still some concern over center back depth and the fullback races have yet to be determined, but things are coming together with the first preseason scrimmage scheduled for today. 18:56 - The Pride have a new overlord and an additional goalkeeper as camp opens. We talked about the notable absences from the presason roster in addition to all of those who are on it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Orlando is known for some of the hottest boy bands such as Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, O-Town and more. One of the newest boy bands to hit the sound waves is a group known as No Lonely Hearts. Members Brian, Dylan, Aidan, Alex, and Oliver are the heartbeat of this lively group. Although this is an Orlando-based band, they came from all over the United States after a nationwide audition — working with the same team that worked with Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and Pink — in hopes of making it big in the music industry. There are two guys from Florida. Oliver is from The City Beautiful and Brian is from Ft. Lauderdale. Dylan is from Texas, Alex came all the way from New Jersey and Aidan is from Pennsylvania. So what is it about these guys that make the group work? “The genuine love they have for each other coming together as a boy band from an audition,” says Tony Wilkins Vice President of A&R/Management for KDS Platinum Records. “Being from different parts of the country, they have bonded well together. All they could do here in Orlando was practice.” The group said living in the house together is actually a lot of fun, almost like living with brothers. “We understand each other's personal space on our days off, ”Dylan said. “We try to just chill, but then when it's time to work, we get to work and you know, we've come to enjoy living with each other. Some of us cook some of us just have fun time, play music just always bond with each other”. The group has released three singles this year while performing all over the United States at different venues. Their latest single “No Body (Else)” was just released on Halloween. The KDS Platinum Records band announced their release to their fans accompanied by the music video inspired by Michael Jackson's 1983 hit Thriller video. The group donned vampire attire while showcasing their choreography in a haunted castle. This single followed “Cruel Summer” and “A Little Bit Longer” released earlier this year. The group said every day has been a new adventure for them. Touring and making memories along the way is just the beginning. “I hope that every day is just something new, something I've never done before and just that we all come together and make great music,” Dylan said. Hear more about each member and how they got into the world of music in the latest episode of Riff On This. Not only are their stories unique, but they have some wild fan encounters and they even sing a little something special for the host that you won't want to miss! Learn more about your ad choices. Orlando City kept up its solid road form this past weekend with a 2-0 win over the Crew in Columbus. It was a standout performance for the Lions, particularly Rodrigo Schlegel — who opened his MLS account — and Facundo Torres, who was influential on both Orlando goals. We broke down the match and ranted a bit about Schlegel getting snubbed for MLS Team of the Week. We also selected our Man of the Match, which was unanimous. Orlando City will host Arsenal in a midseason friendly — the club's first since 2016. The Lions will be in heavy fixture congestion in July, so it will be interesting to see how Oscar Pareja sets his team up to battle a club that's known throughout the world. The Pride set a dubious NWSL record this weekend by conceding not once, not twice, but thrice inside the first nine minutes of their match against North Carolina. Orlando showed good fight to pull back within 3-2 with half an hour to play but the Pride could get no further. Darian Jenkins was a bright spot for Orlando with a brace, but it's been a dismal Challenge Cup for the club. OCB lost its second straight 2-0 match on the road — this time at Columbus Crew 2. The Young Lions have a lot to learn about life on the road and will try to bounce back at home on Sunday as they'll play New England II following the Lions' game against the New York Red Bulls. This week's mailbag was quite full, and we answered a question about Gaston Gonzalez, only to find out after recording that the young Argentine player hurt his knee while playing for Union Santa Fe. We hate when that happens. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. And we closed the show by giving our key match-ups and score predictions for tonight's match vs. the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Sunday's game against the Red Bulls. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 291 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City got a win in Columbus and Rodrigo Schlegel was a big reason why. Plus, the Gunners are coming to the City Beautiful. 33:13 - The Pride and OCB had weekends to forget. However, Orlando's NWSL side will get a clean slate after this weekend's game and the Young Lions will return home to try to get back on track. 49:31 - Our mailbag is a full one this week and our key match-ups and score predictions for both of this week's matches. Orlando City followed a crazy home loss to FC Cincinnati with almost a mirror image game in a 1-0 win on the road against the LA Galaxy. Both games saw the team with fewer chances, fewer shots, and much less possession find a way to win the game. We break down the win over Chicharito and company, with the Lions getting their first dub in the state of California and only their second in the Pacific time zone. We also selected our Man of the Match, spoke about Orlando's penchant for clean sheets early in this 2022 season, and talked about the MLS Team of the Week and the Lions leaving for international duty. Sam Svilar from Portland Timbers blog Stumptown Footy joined us to give us the perspective from the Rose City. Sam gave us a complete picture of what's gone on with the Timbers so far this season and what we can expect when the teams kick off this Sunday. Big thanks to Sam for taking time out of his schedule to educate us Eastern Conference folk. The Orlando Pride kicked off their 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup campaign and got Head Coach Amanda Cromwell a result in her first match at the helm. Cromwell's bunch held the defending champion Washington Spirit to a scoreless draw this past weekend and there were both good and bad signs in the match. We're going to focus on the positive for now since the sample size is so small. We also discussed the banner kerfuffle that took place on Saturday night at Exploria Stadium and how the club resolved it and owned up to its mistake quickly. OCB gets underway this Saturday and we don't have a lot of information yet about the Young Lions, but we do know that they won't draw any games this season. MLS NEXT Pro is not having it with ties. All matches that end with the teams even on the scoreboard will go to penalties. Both teams get a point for finishing even, and the shootout winner will earn one extra point in the standings. We also discussed the big week ahead for the USMNT. The Yanks have some work to do to clinch a spot in the World Cup. They can do it, but it won't be easy. The second of their three games in this window is, of course, taking place in the City Beautiful at Exploria Stadium. We look at the clinching scenarios, the key players missing, and the weirdness of what happened four years ago on the final match day. This week's mailbag was interested in NCAA brackets, power rankings, the Concacaf Champions League, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. And we closed the show by giving our key match-ups and score predictions for Sunday's trip to play the Timbers. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 287 went down: 0:15 - Orlando City bounced back with an important road victory, the Lions don't score a lot of goals, and the Lions don't concede many goals. Also, defenders should be on Team of the Week for defending well. 24:42 - Sam Svilar jumps on with us and gives us the scoop on the happenings in a post-Diego Valeri Portland. He says the game could go either way on Sunday. 46:20 - The Pride are underway, OCB is about to get underway, the USMNT is about to get back underway, and we've got your mailbag responses.
