This week it gets lonely at night, as we live in a twilight world and there are no friends at dusk. We welcome Matt Pollock (Matty's Movie Burner) back to the program on the final Friday of the month to induct a new entry into the podcast canon: 2020's Tenet, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Martin Donovan, Dimple Kapadia, and former NHL super-pest Sean Avery. One of the few major theatrical releases of the COVID era, it was only just re-released to theaters to capitalize on Oppenheimer's Oscar momentum. But it's a polarizing movie to be sure. While the three of us love it a great deal, it is not a popular sentiment. We do our best to analyze why people put this undeniable gorgeous and visually inventive movie in the crosshairs, and if a critical re-appraisal is due. Plus it's not all Tenet talk, as Matty and J Mo combines for Theatrical Field Reports on Late Night with the Devil, Snack Shack and Love Lies Bleeding. Be forewarned: this is our longest episode ever, and you may want to watch the film before listening along. Unfortunately, at the time of publication, Tenet is currently unavailable for streaming in Canada, though, you know, you could check it out of the library if you're keen. Other works referenced in this episode include Wonka, Paddington, Paddington 2, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Licorice Pizza, Sex Drive, American Pie, Thirteen, Trainspotting, Kids, Heat, Superbad, Pineapple Express, The To-Do List, The Way Way Back, The Dark Knight, Early Edition, Prisoners, Dune: Part 1, S1m0ne, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part 1, The Holdovers, The Iron Claw, Dune: Part 2, The Fabelmans, Dazed and Confused, California Split, A History of Violence, Gone Baby Gone, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Footloose, X-Men '97, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Madame Web, Dune (1984), Arrival, Hot Rod, The Departed, The Invisible Man, In Bruges, Widows, Inception, 12 Monkeys, The Terminator, Looper, Dunkirk, Munich, Belfast, Love Actually..., A Haunting in Venice, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Interstellar, Good Time, High Life, The Lost City of Z, The Boy and the Heron, the Twilight saga, May-December, Station Eleven, Weeds, Insomnia, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Malcolm X, The Dark Knight Rises, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and Good Will Hunting among others. We'll be back next week to kick off April as we check back in with our old pal Tom Cruise and follow him over to Japan for 2003's The Last Samurai, a movie which is presently unavailable to stream in Canada but can be rented on Amazon and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Ever wonder how a movie can make you laugh, grip your seat, and still leave you wanting more? Join us as we navigate the cinematic odyssey of 2023, where we dissect the year's silver screen spectacles, including the gravity-defying stunts of "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1." Our discussion veers through the Italian locations that left us awestruck, blending a rich tapestry of critique and nostalgia that only true film enthusiasts can appreciate. From the personal anecdotes tied to the locations to the challenge of distinguishing this year's gems from last, we promise an episode filled with insightful banter and a relentless quest for the movies that truly shine.Imagine Tom Cruise scaling another skyscraper in his fifties. We chew over the "Mission Impossible" saga's future and its daredevil lead's career longevity, debating whether the franchise should stick to its spy thriller roots or continue upping the ante. We also can't help but muse on the parallels with other action giants, like the "Fast and Furious" series. But we don't stop there; animated wonders and the web-slinging excellence of "Across the Spider-Verse" are on the agenda too. We pick apart the narrative depth, moral dilemmas, and whether cameo appearances enhance or distract from the storytelling.Let's not forget the punchlines and face-palms that movies can sometimes bring. We take a no-holds-barred approach to the cringe-inducing dialogues from the "Madame Webb" trailer, sparing no criticism for what looks to be 2024's potential popcorn fodder. From admiration for unexpected comebacks like Brendan Fraser's gripping performance in "The Whale," to the whimsical hopes for a bolder "Mario Brothers" sequel, we cover the highs, the lows, and the laugh-out-loud moments that make going to the movies—or just talking about them—a blast. So, settle in for a ride through the best, the worst, and everything in-between from the world of film in 2023. Support the show

On this final week of 2023 we're going run and run and run with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in 2023's Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part 1, one might even say Dead Reckoning Part Run  directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Mr. Cruise, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Cary Elwes, Esai Morales Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan, and Henry Czerny.  My two guests are my right hand men on The Blockbuster Crew: Utah's own David Johnson, DMD and Burton Brown, State of Utah IT.  Before the mad dash to our opinion of this movie, the synopsis:  Ethan Hunt and his team of Mission Impossiblers have to go rogue yet again to stop the world from  yada yada yada. Same old crap megalomaniac with a weapon this time it's AI. Or something.  Esai Morales is involved. I fell asleep twice so I didn't quite catch the relationship between the AI and Morales' Gabriel character.  This movie seemed like more of the same old same old. But as a Tom Cruise running movie, it's a masterpiece, reaching an operatic Death in Venice level of running sophistication.  But me go further: This is the biggest offender in “The Each Sequel Feels Like the Exact Same Thing Every Time --Except More of It” category.  In fact the whole series is the worst, far worse than James Bond.   Followed by:  Bourne IdentityX-MenRecent Planet of the Apes movies andHarry Potter  Am I right? On your mark! Get Set!Run!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your one-stop-shop for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Everyone's favorite merc with the mouth's third movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is potentially being moved from its assigned release date. While Disney normally tries to stick to its release schedule, Deadpool 3 is only half-finished and there isn't confidence even if the actor's strike ends soon that production could be brought back together in time to make the deadline. Fans of the MCU may get a reprieve instead of a drought, however, as it is rumored Captain America: Brave New World could take Deadpool's May 2024 Spot. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Matthew Vaughn who has helmed franchises such as Kick Ass and The Kingsman, mentioned that he has had some discussions about potentially being involved in a DC project in the future, saying quote "Never say never, at the moment I'm enjoying creating my own things. The franchise is in the best hands, so let's see what happens." Love her or hate her, the power is undeniable; Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film took the number one spot at the box office again this weekend, adding $32 million dollars to its total domestically. Killers of the Flower Moon opened at second place with $23 million dollars domestically and $44 million dollars worldwide. As has been the trend this year, the two films could not be further apart from each other thematically. Last week during the season 7 premiere of Rick and Morty, voice actors Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden were revealed as the new voices of the characters of Rick and Morty respectively. The search for voice actors to replace Justin Roiland spanned six months and included thousands of candidates. Currently, both actors cannot do interviews due to the ongoing actor's strike. Amazon has ordered a second season of Gen V, the college-set spinoff of The Boys. The renewal comes a couple weeks ahead of the show's first season finale, which is set to debut on November 3. SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP came back to the negotiating table today, a good sign for progress on resolving the actor's strike after the sides broke off talks after the last meeting. Over the weekend, the strike officially hit the 100-day mark. Netflix has unveiled new first-look images from the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender. The gallery of new images includes looks at the upcoming show's main characters. The highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 game for the PlayStation 5 has become the fastest selling PlayStation game over a single-day period. On its first day of release last weekend, the game sold 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours. Netflix revealed a first look at Squid Game: The Challenge, its upcoming reality competition series based on the first season of the blockbuster Korean dystopian drama series Squid Game, which has been billed as the “biggest competition ever.” In The Challenge, 456 players from around the world play a series of games inspired by Squid Game for a prize of $4.56 million dollars. Prime Video has announced that April 12th, 2024 will be the release date for its upcoming post-apocalyptic drama series “Fallout,” adapted from the popular video game franchise of the same name. The series will take place in Los Angeles and will be canonical to the video games. Paramount and Skydance have pushed back Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part 2 to May 23, 2025, from its previous date of June 28, 2024. The film is also going to get a new name.

It's the annual reckoning! Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) and Peter Sciretta (@Petersciretta) return to the podcast and, along with the rest of the Filmcast crew, discuss this year's summer box office. Where did we guess right in the Summer Movie Wager? What were our many, many, many failures? Listen to hear us discuss! Thanks to our sponsor for this episode, BetterHelp: Betterhelp: Go to BetterHelp.com/filmcast to get 10% off your first month. We're making video versions of our reviews! Be sure to follow us on the following platforms: YouTube Tiktok Instagram The Summer Movie Wager is a box office game which is played each summer. You can find the history and play along at http://www.thesummermoviewager.com (thanks to Dennis for maintaining the site!) The general goal of this game is to predict the highest grossing films of the summer in terms of domestic box office, IN THE CORRECT ORDER. The closer you get to the final ranked order, the more points you get. This year, the summer movie wager will begin on May 4 2023 (the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3) and last through September 4, 2023, Labor Day, as usual. Each of your 13 picks (10 movies and 3 dark horses) gets a single score assigned to it by using the following rules: If your picked movie for #1 OR #10 is correct, you score 13 points for it. If your picked movie for 2-9  is correct, you score 10 points for it. If your picked movie is only 1 spot away from its actual placement, you score 7 points for it. If your picked movie is only 2 spots away from its actual placement, you score 5 points for it. If your picked movie is placed inside the Top 10, you score 3 points for it. If your picked movie is not placed inside the Top 10, you score 0 points for it. For each of your picked dark horses placed inside the Top 10, you score 1 point. -If two or more rules apply to a single pick, only that single rule will be applied which assigns the highest point value to that pick. For example: If your pick for #1 is correct, you don't get 16 points for it because it is #1 and because it placed inside the Top 10; instead you only get 13 points for it. Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1" has not lived up to box office expectations the franchise has set, but the audience that has gone out to see it has responded very well. Given the lackluster performance, and the overall lack of conversation surrounding the film, would we consider the $290M budgeted film a failure? There are external factors to consider such as the competitive summer release calendar. Both Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" followed up the latest "Mission" with a one-two punch we may never see again in the cultural phenomenon that was “Barbenheimer.” But the film itself could also be criticized for not drumming up hype all on its own. Give our conversation on this central question a listen and head to the YouTube comments to let us know where you fall on the debate. Stick around though, as this week's episode also includes our review of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," an interview with Marvel's "Secret Invasion" director Ali Selim, and more. ReelBlend PremiumSign up for a bi-weekly newsletter from Sean, and ad-free episodes at bit.ly/reelblendpremium.ReelBlend on YouTubeBe sure to subscribe to ReelBlend on YouTube (YouTube.com/ReelBlendPodcast) for full episodes of the show in video form.Follow The ShowReelBlend - @ReelBlendSean - @Sean_OConnellJake - @JakesTakesKevin - @KevinMcCarthyTVGabe - @gabeKovacsTimestamps (approx. only)00:00:00 - Intro00:10:06 - Is Dead Reckoning Part 1 A Failure?00:37:23 - ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayem' Review00:47:52 - ‘Secret Invasion' Director Ali Selim Interview01:08:38 - ‘Secret Invasion' Review & MCU Tier List Ranking01:22:44 - OutroSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reelblend/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Our ongoing series of reviews of Tom Cruise vehicles leading up to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 is almost over with the release of that long-awaited sequel next month.  So what better time to revisit what many consider to be THE seminal entry of the franchise?  By the time this movie was released in late 2011, Cruise's star had faded somewhat as had the demand for another Mission Impossible sequel after the disappointing box office of Mission Impossible III in 2006.But something was different this time....for one thing, this was the live action feature directorial debut of Brad Bird who over the previous 15 years had directed some of our most beloved animated films including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant.  Also there was less focus on the personal life of Cruise's protagonist Ethan Hunt and more focus placed on the rest of the TEAM - the cast for this one included Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton.  We get to know them a bit more than previous entries.  And.....the movie was released initially in IMAX highlightin some seemingly jaw-dropping stunts featuring The Cruise Missile seemingly risking his life this time around.  So our mission - should we choose to accept it - will be to determine just what made THIS sequel so special almost 14 years ago.....Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Germain's top 10 1.
