Jace welcomes the super-talented Scott Snyder back to the show, The guys chat about holiday plans, the Yankees and the upcoming Wytches animated series. Plus, comics, of course! Scott has had a tremendous amount of creator owned projects come out in the last few years and now he has returned to DC with Absolute Batman. The comics talk starts with By A Thread, a series Scott co-writes with his son, Jack. Also, the Eisner-award winning Barnstormers series with Tula Lotay is discussed. Canary, White Boat, Night of the Ghoul and tons more titles are touched on before finishing up with Absolute Batman. It's a fun time, so we hope you enjoy it!
YO!!! We're finally back! It's been a while, but we're working on getting back into the swing of things. Meet our new co-host Balaram Shakti and enjoy this trip down memory lane with Sean & John from By A Thread. This episode's sponsor is our friends at Iodine Records. Check out a ton of cool new and archival releases here: https://iodinerecords.com/ This episode is also dedicated in loving memory to Kim Kinakin of Sparkmarker who passed away in September.
Andrew Shaw, Wake the Great Salt Lake Coordinator for the Salt Lake City Arts Council and Kellie Bornhoft, Artist, Professor, and Grant Recipient, join us to talk about the Wake the Great Salt Lake Art Project and Kellie's “By A Thread” art installation. Hopefully one of several discussions, we talk about the Bloomberg funded art project, Kellie's artwork as the first of 12 art projects, and the Wake the Great Salt Lake's goals of raising awareness and conversation about the Great Salt Lake. So fun to step out of the academic arena for a moment and discuss the importance of art and different perspectives in addressing the complicated and critical issues surrounding the Great Salt Lake.
Well, if the world has to end, at least it looks amazing. Comics great Scott Snyder has teamed up with his son Jack to pen the ComiXology series “By A Thread,” now three issues in, with issue four to be released on March 26. Set amidst a desolated Earth, The Shroud has consumed nearly the entire surface of the planet, with just a handful of outposts remaining. Jo and his friends live on five “Needles,” spikes of diamonds, the only substance that The Shroud cannot devour. It's a hard life, but the appearance of a strange traveller gives hope to a legend of an untouched island where life can thrive once more. Scott, Jack and I talk about how this series grew from a writing exercise to published comic. This was Jack's first foray into comics, and we go into how he viewed the experience and the lessons learned, both for he and his father. The series was drawn by Valeria Favoccia (Beatrix Rose), colored by Whitney Cogar (Giant Days), and lettered by Tom Napolitono (letters), and we talk about how this team collaborated and produced some of the best art I've ever seen. Jack helped create the diverse cast, and we look at each person's role and how the characters were created—both the heroes and villains. Though the story is nearing its end, more is planned for “By A Thread,” and Scott shares a few details on what we can expect.

Jace and Rocky from the Comic Boom! YouTube channel give their spoiler-free thoughts on By A Thread #1. It's the latest Comixology Original title from writer Scott Snyder with his son Jack as co-writer. Gorgeous, kinetic art with wonderful emotion in both facial expressions and body language by Valeria Flavoccia is perfected complemented by beautiful color work from Whitney Cogar wit lettering by Tom Napolitano rounding out the creative team. Vinny, drummer from The Mercy Fucks, has been left high and dry by his bandmates. Cut loose and left to explain songs like "Panty Sniffer" and "Commode Crusher" despite not having written them. He puts in a sterling performance however, thrilling us with stories about panty sniffing, commode crushing and spurious activity in the back of a car.Vin and Niall demonstrate the strength of their egos, Tom's is made of paper or something, we enjoy a gig report from Bolton (thanks Danny Barrett off The Crash Mats), Niall's lost a crucial grooming tool and we prove that we most certainly can't speak Polish.Extra Music This week is from: The Toy Dolls, Wytrzeszcz, By A Thread, Upchuck and The Dwarves

Luca Brasi: Luca Brasi are one of Australia’s finest live acts. They are a complete juggernaut of energy and are no holds barred on a stage. They formed in 2009 in St Helens in Tasmania named after the ruthless killer in The Godfather and have translated that energy into their hard rock sound. They have released four albums in their time as a band from the first being 2011’s ‘Extended Family’, then in 2014 with ‘By A Thread’, 2016’s ‘If This Is All We’re Going To Be’ which reached 18 on the Australian charts, and as recently as June of 2018 with the record ‘Stay’, which beat out 2016’s effort reaching No. 10 on the charts. They have earned their reputation as a formidable live act and they command stages around the country as well as big festival spots. This show was just after the release of their album and was a sold out show to a packed audience at The Triffid.

Mediks have built their reputation on a marriage of technical aptitude and bouncing vibrancy, and their latest ‘Fast Lane' EP is no exception to the rule with five unique, genre-crossing tracks laced with Mediks' signature synth-workouts and relentless energy. ‘Fast Lane' Ft. Texas Opening with crunching snares and a tearing lead guitar riff that sails through the arrangement, ‘Fast Lane' wastes no time moving towards its devastating drop. Paired with Texas' flowing lyrics and waves of futuristic, laser-esque synth stabs, ‘Fast Lane' sets the pace for the EP's no-holds-barred approach to tech-orientated dance floor destruction. ‘So Cruel' Ft. Georgina Upton ‘So Cruel' is the perfect display of Mediks' ability to simultaneously juggle a multitude of moods and tempos – with its down-tempo plucking synths and soaring vocals courtesy of Georgina Upton making her AudioPorn debut – rendering the listener unable to predict the switch-up in the arrangement when the track eventually breaks into its bouncing synth-led drop. Dominated by fluctuating mids and rumbling subs, ‘So Cruel' once again underlines Mediks' playful vigor amidst their trademark rolling energy. ‘By A Thread' Ft. Georgina Upton Continuing in the same vein from the runaway success of ‘Blown Away' from their debut Outbreak EP, ‘By A Thread' drops the all-out assault of the EP's opening two tracks and focuses on uplifting, hands-in-the-air summertime vibes. With its pulsating stabs and Georgina Upton's titular, soothing vocals laced throughout, ‘By A Thread' is another glowing example of Mediks' adaptability and keen ear for mood progression. ‘Hulk' Displaying Mediks' comfort in technical excellence at a multitude of different tempos, ‘Hulk' drops the tempo down to 140 without losing sense of their signature boisterous intensity. With its processed claps, wandering retro-futuristic synths and guitar licks punctuated throughout the arrangement, ‘Hulk' rarely treads on similar grounds twice as its mid swipes seem to have a mind of their own, floating effortlessly after the drop. Sure to send dance floors across the land into a mindless frenzy. ‘Hands On That Ass' Ft. Messinian Being no strangers to sonic experimentation, Mediks have come up with something entirely different with the ‘Fast Lane' EP's closing track. ‘Hands On That Ass' welcomes premier wordsmith Messinian – who has toured worldwide, as Dieselboy's front man in particular, as one of Drum & Bass' most successful MC's to date. With its rolling, militant hi-hats and G-Funk inspired wailing synths. ‘Hands On That Ass' takes the usual tropes associated with ‘Trap' music and evolves them, Mediks-style. Paired with Texas’ flowing lyrics and waves of futuristic, laser-esque synth stabs, ‘Fast Lane’ sets the pace for the EP’s no-holds-barred approach to tech-orientated dance floor destruction. ‘So Cruel’ Ft. Georgina Upton ‘So Cruel’ is the perfect display of Mediks’ ability to simultaneously juggle a multitude of moods and tempos – with its down-tempo plucking synths and soaring vocals courtesy of Georgina Upton making her AudioPorn debut – rendering the listener unable to predict the switch-up in the arrangement when the track eventually breaks into its bouncing synth-led drop. Dominated by fluctuating mids and rumbling subs, ‘So Cruel’ once again underlines Mediks’ playful vigor amidst their trademark rolling energy. ‘By A Thread’ Ft. Georgina Upton Continuing in the same vein from the runaway success of ‘Blown Away’ from their debut Outbreak EP, ‘By A Thread’ drops the all-out assault of the EP’s opening two tracks and focuses on uplifting, hands-in-the-air summertime vibes. With its pulsating stabs and Georgina Upton’s titular, soothing vocals laced throughout, ‘By A Thread’ is another glowing example of Mediks’ adaptability and keen ear for mood progression. ‘Hulk’ Displaying Mediks’ comfort in technical excellence at a multitude of different tempos, ‘Hulk’ drops the tempo down to 140 without losing sense of their signature boisterous intensity. With its processed claps, wandering retro-futuristic synths and guitar licks punctuated throughout the arrangement, ‘Hulk’ rarely treads on similar grounds twice as its mid swipes seem to have a mind of their own, floating effortlessly after the drop. Sure to send dance floors across the land into a mindless frenzy. ‘Hands On That Ass’ Ft. Messinian Being no strangers to sonic experimentation, Mediks have come up with something entirely different with the ‘Fast Lane’ EP’s closing track. ‘Hands On That Ass’ welcomes premier wordsmith Messinian – who has toured worldwide, as Dieselboy’s front man in particular, as one of Drum & Bass’ most successful MC’s to date. With its rolling, militant hi-hats and G-Funk inspired wailing synths. ‘Hands On That Ass’ takes the usual tropes associated with ‘Trap’ music and evolves them, Mediks-style. Hold on to your hats people. TRACKLISTINGMediks - Hulk Dodge & Fuski - ???
