This Throwback Thursday episode of Chris DeMakes A Podcast revisits Episode 143, originally released on February 20, 2023, featuring John Parr discussing the creation of his iconic 1985 hit, “St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion).” While widely recognized from the St. Elmo's Fire film soundtrack, the song was actually inspired by the remarkable journey of Paralympian Rick Hansen and his Man in Motion tour for spinal cord research. Parr breaks down the writing process, the star-studded recording sessions, and how this powerful anthem became a lasting symbol of perseverance and triumph. Isabelle and David continue to talk with David's brother's friend, Aaron, and contemplate why folks with ADHD can be so enthusiastic and excited about interests, people, etc. Is it because we are like puppies who are starved for reinforcement (dopamine)? Or does it come from living a life on the outside and the joy of connection when it has been missed for so long. With callbacks to Greatest American Hero (See Ep095) as well as the real story behind the theme song to St. Elmo's Fire.—-David describes how borrowing from LeDerick Horne and his brilliant theory around leadership, that folks in leadership can have a number of qualities, including being promoters. Folks with ADHD can be natural promoters, and being a promoter is actually a form of leading others. With the caveat that we must be into what we promote. And how excited we are about people and how we talk people up. David names that perhaps this has something to do with how we are starving (for dopamine) and intimacy and connection and relatedness can help us fill that void, we reach for the connection and get excited. Isabelle wonders if this relates to an autism(ASD)-style special interest, how she perpetually is excited and has a working principle that everyone could find common ground if we just found a shared hobby or special interest. David likes to tell people on airplanes that he's a car salesman so he can talk and listen to his heart's content but he doesn't have to focus on what he does. Isabelle names that even though David is not very savvy about cars, he could sell a car because he's such a natural salesperson. Isabelle names that anxiety around overselling things, she might encourage people to try new things, take new risks, explore and play—but her working memory is so poor that she doesn't know if she oversold, she has to refer to notes or something as reference. David loved serving as fun because there was a high degree of risk and failing so it helped me remember things. David names that we are not starving puppies with watery eyes, but we are highly susceptible to be reinforced, so when we see someone else's tail wagging, it shoots up our levels of dopamine, we are highly reinforced. The establishing operation—social connection and social mastery is water for us, like the water-deprived rats being reinforced in Skinner boxes. The environment makes Isabelle's puppy quality feel safe or good or not; and can lead to her feeling starved of that connection and reinforcement. The feeling when you have no one wagging their tail back at you—how many mistakes we do make, how many social gaffs and miscues, and big ones. It's almost like we find ourselves so marginalized, its like finding a prison gang when we find people who get us. What does it do to your sense of self when you can't do what you want with your morning—how that deflates your sense of self. Isabelle feels like she shares a bond with the other parents and caregivers that are always running late—it flares up imposter syndrome and “if you only saw me five minutes ago." David reframes this as "if only you saw what it took me to get here and I made it!" Aaron is a master of social engineering, even though he's almost always good at it and social interaction, he remains scared the whole time. The anxiety hits because if it doesn't work out, he takes the hits hard: he can take a lot of them, but they hit hard. David shares one of his hits—he was spending a lot of money for grad school, wanting to read all the books for all his classes, he was going to learn it all...but he didn't do any of the readings for one of his classes. The class was talking about this person out loud, “Ed Nafoah” — he was like "what is this Nafoah guy talking about ?” and everyone in class is like “Edna? Her name is Edna Foa.” It took five to ten minutes for David to feel the cabin pressure returning and the lights to come up and to return to his body. Aaron points out that his impulsivity could carry him through it—David had a ballast and in grad school and they were talking about different psychosocial backgrounds, step or two based on privilege. The professor holds up a dollar and says "the first person to…can have this dollar?” He's never seen someone authorized like that. Aaron sings the theme song from “The Greatest American Hero” which we all know, and the superhero suit is David's impulsivity. Who is Edna Foa?Greatest American Hero trailer (he is LITERALLY "walking on air")Story behind St. Elmo's Fire theme song, "Man in Motion" here's the music video and the song A quick synopsis of the backstory behind the song (Source: Wikipedia)And an interview with the songwriter/singer, John Parr, discussing how he came up with the idea and how he snuck it in to be the theme song for this 1980's Brat Pack Extravaganza. What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. The At The Flicks team have often been referred to as Brats (ok, just one member in particular), so when Darren suggested we review a movie called Brats, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. It is not however our origins story. Instead, it is a documentary about the mid 80's movie brat generation, told by one of their own. Actor turned director Andrew McCarthy (who appeared in St Elmo's Fire and Less Than Zero), felt that the term movie brats, as coined by writer David Blum, was something of a put down. While it's certainly true that the article that coined that term was less than flattering about that unique generation of actors, for many of us at that time, a “movie brats” movie was something to seek out and savour. For Andrew McCarthy, both the director and essentially on-screen narrator, Brats became a voyage of self-discovery as he revisited both the past and other members of the so called Brat Pack. He chats to Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy amongst others. What emerges is a fascinating study of youthful American movies of the period coupled with a satisfying self-reflection story. As for the At The Flicks team, things we learnt in our discussion were: · The Breakfast Club and The Cotton Club are not related. · Why we believe Anthony Michael Hall wasn't referred to · Why Molly Ringwald didn't appear in the documentary · Why Graham and Darren hate the music video of John Parr's song Man In Motion (Jeff on the other hand loved it) · Which one of the participants gave the most insightful reflection on the past Oh, and the team all realised they dislike the author of the original article, who is interviewed by Andrew McCarthy later in the documentary. So, if you have an interest in 80's cinema then this is a documentary you really don't want to miss. We all gave it a thumbs up, which means Phil wasn't in the review group! See you for the next gonzo review show or At The Flicks Bye for now

Just a quick midweek pop-in but it's packed with drama. First, we revisit 1985's "St. Elmo's Fire," which is the ultimate Brat Pack movie. Andrew McCarthy's "Brats" documentary inspired us to see whether Joel Schumacher's film still holds up nearly 40 years later. (Spoiler alert: It doesn't.) But that John Parr theme song remains stuck in our heads. It's streaming in various places if you'd like to rewatch it, as well. And speaking of documentaries, we review "I Am: Celine Dion," which takes an intimate look at the legendary singer as she fights a rare neurological disorder. Dion makes herself vulnerable for the camera in ways that are startling and deeply human, and even if you're not a fan of her music, you'll appreciate her openness and her drive. Streaming on Prime Video. Check back with us Friday as we review "A Quiet Place: Day One" and "A Family Affair" on Netflix. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us this summer! For this Deep Dive we welcome back John Parr to discuss his underappreciated album from 1992, Man With a Vision. By this point in his career, John was all alone with no major label support and litigation making it hard to get heard. He self-produced this album and it's an excellent slab of peak AOR goodness, even though it's from the early 90s. John gives us the full story and I hope you'll all seek out this beauty for yourselves. Enjoy! www.johnparr.net www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

The importance of Emotional Intelligence in achieving success at work and in our day-to-day lives has been discussed in many books over the past twenty-five years however, few of the books have shown how to actually develop your skills so you can become more Emotionally Intelligent. In this podcast we get some top tips on how to develop our own skills and how to bring emotional awareness into our coaching sessions. Podcast Host, Jenny Butter, is joined by John Parr and his client Geanina Rindasu. John has developed seminars and training for people who desire to live an emotionally fulfilled life and his organisation teaches coaches and professional trainers who want to help people to become more assertive. Geanina is an HR consultant, trainer, and coach and has been John's client for around 18 months. The Record Of The Year Showdown enters the second "bracket" section with winners from 1975-1990, which means a lot of flashbacks to our America's Damp 40 season; theories about Billy Joel and Rufus Wainwright; Eagles/color-blindness test metaphors; underappreciated dad-bod pop stars; how a cult implicated Steve Winwood; and the necessity of special categories to contain nuclear waste like "We Are The World." It all culminates in a FIVE-way tie amongst cheeses standing alone -- AND outtakes! We've got wind, we've got wings, YOU'VE got an all-new episode of MASTAS. Foreigner took some significant time between their fourth and fifth studio albums. Agent Provocateur was released in December of 1984 and made it to number 5 on the US charts. Interestingly it hit number 1 in the UK, the only Foreigner album to do so. It had a balance of heavier rock songs and lighter ballads, allowing the group to appeal to both male and female fans.At the time, Foreigner consisted of Lou Gramm on lead vocals and percussion, Mick Jones on guitars and keyboards, Rick Wills on bass, and Dennis Elliott on drums. Jones and Gramm are the primary songwriters, and their differences fuel an excellent sound. Unfortunately, writing credits around this album and its big hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is" would drive dissent. Gramm would appear on the next Foreigner album, then would split from the group.Friend of the show John Lynch joins us in Bruce's absence, and Rob brings us this album. Tooth and NailThe track that leads off the album was co-written by Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. While it received some airplay, this rocker is an underrated song from Foreigner. The lyrics describe a boy considered to be not good enough for the girl, and the fight that he would wage to be worthy of her.Reaction to ActionThe third single from the album is a more hard rocking and energetic song than the first two singles. Jones and Gramm share writing credits for this one as well. The lyrics tell of an intriguing girl and how her actions prompt a "reaction to action."A Love in VainThis deeper cut has a heavy synthesizer sound and a lighter rock feel. This song is also a good showcase of Gramm's vocals.I Want to Know What Love IsThis is the first single and big hit from the album. It was the song that propelled the album, but drove a wedge between Gramm and Jones. The track features a New Jersey choir backing Gramm's vocals. Mick Jones spent a lot of time with the choir, freeing Gramm to sing as he wished. This freedom, coupled with disputes about writing credits, would drive later decisions for Gramm to depart the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from "Monday Night Football"Broadcaster Howard Cosell would depart the booth, retiring this month. STAFF PICKS:Walking on a Thin Line by Huey Lewis & the News Brian starts off the staff picks with the fifth single off the album "Sports." Despite its upbeat sound, the subject is more serious than many other Huey Lewis songs. It tells of an American soldier trained as a sniper in the Vietnam War, and who must face his demons when he returns home. Naughty Naughty by John Parr Wayne features a debut single with a great synth beat. English singer songwriter John Parr writes lyrics attempting a romantic conquest. Like a Virgin by MadonnaJohn brings us pop phenomenon Madonna with her first number 1 hit. The song's co-writer Billy Steinberg drew inspiration for this song from a new romantic interest during a time when he thought he would never get over a previous relationship. The song would become a signature song for Madonna and an iconic song of the 80's.Black Cars by Gino VannelliRob continues the synth heavy trend in this podcast. The title track from the album of the same name tells of an aging woman fighting the fading of her beauty. "Black cars look better in the shade. She slips her lipstick on right before she sleeps for all those phantom lovers in her dreams." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Junku by Herbie HancockThis song was played on Saturday Night Live when Hancock was the musical guest in the month.
