This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! This ep. includes the final 25 responses! Be sure to also check out Volume's 1 & 2 to get the full experience! Guests appearing in Vol. 3 (in no particular order): Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, Joe Bonamassa, Desmond Child, Ed Toth of The Doobie Brothers, Walter Trout, Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Nick Niespodziani & Peter Olson of Yacht Rock Revue, Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big, Kevin “Sonny” Gullage, Emily Wolfe, Jax Hollow, Sean Faust, Wolfgang Valbrun, Carrie Cunningham, Jesse Jackson of Set Lusting Bruce, Eric Senich of the Van Halen News Desk / Booked on Rock Podcast, Jessica Ann Catena of Music Notes With Jess, Bobby Schultz of Effin' Cultured, Mac Wolf of The Ugly American Werewolf In London Rock Podcast, Jason Whissell of It's Not That Bad & There Can Only Be One Podcasts, friends of the show Jimmy Mitchell & Bob Spear, two more incredible Patreon Mixtapers: David Lee Smith & Philip Bergman, and last (but certainly not least!) a guest appearance from Paul Williams! Meet Captain Content & Kevin in the pit again this week for a tooth-losing, hella good time! We're getting our aggressions out by revisiting the starting point of it all for Kevin. The thrash, crossover, speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n' punk n' metal. Once again, we will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real meta,l people. All hail the speed and ferocity of Thrash! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Exodus – “And Then There Were None”from Bonded By Blood(1985)Dead On – “The Widower” from Dead On (1989) Belladonna – “Blunt Man” from Belladonna (1995)Coroner – “Read My Scars” from No More Color (1989)Reverend – “Butcher Of Baghdad” from Play God (1991)Grip Inc. – “Guilty Of Innocence” from Power Of Inner Stregth (1995)Havok – “Fear Campaign” from V (2020)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Bon Jovi took the rock world by storm with their massive third album, "Slippery When Wet." A big tour followed, and afterwards the band was anxious to demonstrate that they were not a one (album) hit wonder. They got into the studio at Vancouver, BC in May of 1988 and quickly recorded their fourth studio album entitled New Jersey. Originally going under the working title "Sons of Beaches," the band would settle on their home state as the name of the album. Bon Jovi wanted to make a double album, but the record label balked, fearing that the higher price tag of a double album would impact sales. The album still clocked in at close to an hour of play length, not uncommon during a time when CD's were beginning to stretch the length of albums past the more common album play times. The result was a stellar success, debuting on the Billboard 200 albums chart at number 8, before moving to the top spot a week later, where it would remain for four weeks. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of the songs on the album, with some assistance from songwriter Desmond Child. Five singles from the album went into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with two topping that chart.Bon Jovi would go on to an unusual achievement - remaining one of rock music's A-listers for decades. Bon Jovi would continue to sell out arenas, a feat limited to groups such as U2, Metallica, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones. Friend of the show Julie Doran brings us this stellar album. We are also joined by friend of the show Steve Hardin as we cover for the absence of both Wayne and Lynch this week. In addition, fan of the Show Christian joins us to help Rob bring his Staff Pick. Bad MedicineJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora collaborate with Desmond Child in the writing of this song which went to number 1 on the US charts. The lyrics are pretty straightforward, comparing love to a drug. "There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease." The video features hand-held cameras provided to fans at the concert providing their "point of view" at the concert.Living In SinThe fifth single from the album still broke into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This power ballad has lyrics that explore love being more powerful than the expectations of society. Bon Jovi is singing about his high school sweetheart, whom he would marry in Las Vegas while on the New Jersey Syndicate tour.Born to Be My BabyThis single is another example for the collaboration with Desmond Child, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has a lot of similarities with Springsteen, with lyrics about a couple of working class lovers facing the world together. The video took the opposite direction from many highly produced videos of the time, opting for low budget black-and-white.I'll Be There For YouThe big hit from the album was this number 1 power ballad. With a runtime of 5:43, this song is the longest song to hit number 1 on the charts in 1989. The lyrics describe a guy desperately seeking to get his girl back, this time forever. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Put a Little Love in Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox (from the motion picture “Scrooged”)Bill Murray stars in this retelling of "A Christmas Carol." STAFF PICKS:Armageddon It by Def LeppardRob starts off the staff picks with the sixth single from the multi-platinum album, "Hysteria." High School Student and Fan of the Show, Christian, assists with his thoughts on the band. By the time this song hit number 3 on the US charts, the album had been out for well over a year. The lyrics are a play on words - “Hey, but are you gettin' it? Armageddon it.”Desire by U2Julie's staff pick has a blues feel and a Bo Diddley beat. The song is both a critique of the glitzy televangelist making money off his followers, and the ambition and glitz surrounding a successful rock band. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989. I'm Sorry by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a long lost hit from a Dublin group that combines Irish music with an eclectic mix of soul, gospel, and rock influences. You know, we all have times when we're "sitting back on our deep pile reclining chair" thinking about our lives and “looking over our misdemeanors, misgivings, misfortunes, and Miss Whatever her name is," and say "I'm sorry.”Never Tear Us Apart by INXSSteve closes out the staff picks this week. INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics that describe a couple with an instant, almost karmic connection when they first meet. This is the fourth single off the album "Kick" and went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:Wild Thing by Sam KenisonThe sultry sounds of Sam Kenison take us out with this angry cover of the Troggs classic. y 1989, Ace Frehley had been out of KISS for 7 years and during that time he'd maintained a debaucherous lifestyle including car accidents and very little in the way of new music. Finally Eddie Trunk helped get him signed to Megaforce and got him working. Frehley's Comet released 2 albums in 1987 & !988 (Frehley's Comet, Second Sighting) trying to reestablish himself on the rock circuit. And while 1989's Trouble Walkin' was a solid offering for the time it was released, looking back it's easy to see why it didn't crack the top 100 in the US. Though Ace and Richie Scarlet put together some catchy, heavy riffs with some signature Ace guitar licks, Ace's vocal need help. Left alone they're too bare unless they have the sing-a-long chorus behind him. Shot Full of Rock Five Card Stud and the title track are great straight ahead rockers...until the vocals kick in. As usual, Ace's lyrics are somewhere between silly and bad. But we're Ace fans darnit! So we like hearing what he does. Fractured III connects the record to his 1978 solo and first Frehley's Comet album with a solid instrumental. But lyrics on songs like Back To School, 2 Young 2 Die and Five Card Stud illustrate why KISS had to reign him in on those records. And the mystery is why did Ace cover Hide Your Heart, a song written by Paul Stanley, Desmond Child & Holly Knight, which was originally sung by Bonnie Tyler and that KISS would feature on their album Hot In The Shade? It's a head scratcher but maybe Ace was ready to show his old bandmates that he can still rock, even with their tracks. But as college students, we loved this one and wanted to celebrate Ace as Trouble Walkin' turns 35! The Talk of Fame Podcast got to talk with Eric Paquette! “21 Ways My Life Is Great” out April 19th 2024, is the second single from YOUTHYEAR - the moniker of Eric Paquette, a Nashville based artist, songwriter, and producer. YOUTHYEAR has collaborated with alt giants Lit, Dashboard Confessional, Letdown, and Michigander along with Butch Walker, Desmond Child, Colin Brittain, members of No Doubt and more. YOUTHYEAR's debut single “Basement” was the first step outside of the writer/producer chair and into the artist spotlight. YOUTHYEAR & rock legend Carlo Colasacco (Shinedown, Sueco) co-wrote and co-produced the song which features a music video that tips its hat to Nirvana's “In Bloom'' and Weezer's “Buddy Holly'' videos and their satirical portrayal of the late ‘50s early ‘60s. Sonically the song also draws influence from both bands and the more melodic side of grunge and pop-rock of the ‘90s. Upbeat and all-things-alt-rock, it's bursting with bright melodies that sit next to melodic powerhouse classics like The All American Rejects and new acts like The Band Camino. Late ‘90s icon Ajay Popoff of the band Lit (My Own Worst Enemy) joined in on group vocals as well as makes a feature in the music video, co-directed by Nick Stafford (All Time Low, Charlotte Sands, Boys Like Girls) and YOUTHYEAR who also co-styled the video. Lyrically “21 Ways My Life Is Great” is a “so glad it's finally over” breakup song that captures the explosive joy of finally being free of a toxic relationship.``Guess my mom was right ‘about your type” is just one of the playful ways'' Eric is grateful to be onto better things. Bottom line, there are no regrets over the breakup in this song. Ever felt that rush of nostalgia when a classic rock tune hits the airwaves? We're cranking it up a notch with a blast from the past as Nutley Nick—you know him as West Virginia Nick—joins us with his special Japanese version of Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet." Strap in for a ride through the history of New Jersey's rock icons, where we uncover the original album artwork that never made the cut and dissect the anthem that almost wasn't, "Livin' on a Prayer." We'll even toss in some good old debate: Is Jon Bon Jovi or Bruce Springsteen the true New Jersey hero?As we go track by track, we'll hit you with lesser-known facts that'll make even the most die-hard fans do a double-take. Just how does Desmond Child's songwriting mastery resonate with the working class? What's the connection between "You Give Love a Bad Name" and Bonnie Tyler? And let's not forget the harmonious showdowns—Richie Sambora's guitar solos meet anthemic choruses, making for a rock symphony that's stood the test of time. To cap it all off, we're pulling back the curtain on the music industry's inner workings: Did teenagers in New York really pick the hits? How do artists like Prince continue to influence music beyond the grave? And we've got a heartwarming story about Bon Jovi's lasting friendship with Skid Row's Dave "The Snake" Sabo. Whether you're here to reminisce or to discover the roots of rock 'n' roll, you're in for a treat that's as timeless as the classics we're celebrating.Support the showSounds:https://freesound.org/people/frodeims/sounds/666222/ Door openinghttps://freesound.org/people/Sami_Hiltunen/sounds/527187/ Eerie intro music https://freesound.org/people/jack126guy/sounds/361346/ Slot machinehttps://freesound.org/people/Zott820/sounds/209578/ Cash registerhttps://freesound.org/people/Exchanger/sounds/415504/ Fun Facts Jingle Thanks to The Tsunami Experiment for the theme music!!Check them out hereSUPPORT US AT https://www.buzzsprout.com/1984311/supporters/newMERCH STORE https://ol-dirty-basement.creator-spring.comFind us at the following https://oldirtybasement.buzzsprout.com WEBSITE ...

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1979 polarizing KISS album, "Dynasty." This was KISS' 7th studio album and the 21st KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Dynasty was the first studio album since Love Gun in 1977. This was the longest time between studio albums for KISS. It was the last studio to feature all original members until Psycho Circus in 1998. The album was produced by Vini Poncia, who Peter Criss demanded and had previously produced Peter's 1978 solo album. The band was definitely changing. Super KISS had been formed. The band wore flashier outfits with capes and became more comic book-like. They experimented with more pop and yes, even disco, with their huge international smash, "I Was Made For Lovin' You, written with this new upcoming songwriter, Desmond Child. Producer Vini Poncia was instrumental in this new sound, however the band did write some of their best songs, like the brilliant, "Sure Know Something." Yes brilliant! However, this departure in sound and style alienated a lot of the KISS Army. The album also featured all four members sing at least on song, just as they did on Love Gun. However, this album featured Ace Frehley on three songs, by far his most. Gene Simmons only sang on only two. The album also featured ghost player, Anton Fig on drums. Peter Criss only played drums on his song, "Dirty Livin'." The album cover was the iconic photo of the four faces of the band. The inside photo of the band in black also became legendary. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to another must listen to SIOL album review. Brittany makes her triumphant return to the studio after a brief hiatus and shockingly is on Tom's nerves right away. In the first hour, SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about how underwhelming this year's World Series matchup is, and KSTP's Chris Egert on why Tom Emmer withdrew from the Speaker of the House race and an update on Dean Phillips' campaign. Hour #2 sees the crew find out who their doppelgangers are, Tevin comes to the realization he looks just like Rerun after saying Tom looks like the character Carl Frederickson from "Up". In hour #3 Desmond Child, writer of every song you've ever heard, is now the writer of a book called Livin On A Prayer: Big Songs Big Life. Kristyn Burtt discusses why movies are bad now and how we might all be watching Netflix in theaters in the future. On the Family, we discuss the eastern hemisphere. Which accent is best? Which European cities have you been to? Which war in the Middle East is your favorite? We'll give you a while to think about that last one, because you might have to pore through a couple thousand Wikipedia articles before you decide.
