Someone once suggested that country songs about heartache and lost love sound the same as country songs about good times and happy days. Is it just the wailing fiddle intro often referred to as the “fiddle kickoff” that neutralizes the emotional jar of joy or grief that causes a reaction like that? Or is it just country songwriting is geared towards the simple task of expressing emotions in the terms of everyday life? No matter the reason, we'll be taking on a country-themed collection of songs about heartaches this week in the show. We'll do this by walking through some of the golden greats from the Golden Age of Country Music where the ways of the heart were a common theme and, thus, the heartache was an easy rhythmic mark for the country songwriter. We'll share the Walkers' Charlie and Billy, Jimmie Skinner, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizzell, Patsy, George and Stonewall among a couple dozen others, all with a message that speaks to country heartaches; and may we also say that there was plenty of fodder to draw from. Drop in…and don't forget the hankies.

The pickins are thin until payday rolls around. Money is short and there's none to spare. Although we've been wanting to save for a rainy day, the cupboards still need fillin' and we also need enough to have some fun. If that eagle flies on Friday then Saturday night is when the time is right. This week we'll be banking on that combined theme of payday, money and taxes. Belly up to the barroom country sounds of Faron Young, Lefty Frizzell and The Sons of the Pioneers and then find some rhythm and blues with The Fiestas, The Harlem Hamfats, Bobby Charles and Dom Flemons. It's all about cashing out every couple of weeks and spreading thin with savings being thinner. We've got greenbacks, dollar down payments, songs about payday, the taxman and that almighty dollar to remind us that, as Peter Case points out, that “there's two kinds of justice everybody knows, one for folks up on the hill and one for the others down below”.  And to further hammer it home…the balance of justice is just a mirror of the distribution of wealth.

This week's show takes us across the landscape of the state of Georgia and then reminisces about ladies that share her name. No genre is off limits and no era too far in the past is excluded in this latest Deeper Roots show that takes on a theme. We're also hoping that the will of the people is not interfered with in a state that's struggling to awaken; a lumbering giant of democracy still haunted (and celebrated at the highest levels) by plantation politics. Our music this week will feature some tradition from Georgia's own Jake Xerxes Fussell, country tunes from Lefty Frizzell and Charley Crockett, jazz from Nina Simone and Joe Venuti, and we'll visit a Georgia Camp Meeting and One More Sunday in Savannah. Tune in for a collection of tunes about a state of mind and some fine women who share the name of a southern state where peaches and a darker past prosper. Tune in on Friday morning here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

For all our true dyed in the wool country fans , I truly believe you're gonna love this one as much as I enjoyed putting it together. The more I researched, the more I came to believe that this artist, Jimmy Rogers, was the most influential in the early times and  even to this day, the most influential in making country music what it is today. HANK SNOW, ERNEST TUBB, TOM T HALL, JACK GREENE, LEFTY FRIZZELL , MERLE HAGGARD and CAL SMITH  are all in todays show attesting to the fact . Of course I've got JIMMY ROGER'S originals here too. Take a walk way down memory lane my friends. I think you'll hear what I mean. Life is good.

Phil & Jake are back to rank John Carpenter's 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, the musical subgenre known as Bro-Country, and Baby Yoda on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The kid in Madonna's Open Your Heart video isn't Leo Dicaprio, he's Felix Howard, who is now an A&R guy. Actors that we talk about include Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, James Hong, Danny Trejo, He Huy Quan, Al Leong (here's his wedding announcement), Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Jason Mantzoukas, Tom Cruise, Jackie Chan and Rodney Dangerfield. Other movies discussed include Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Overboard (which Phil thinks is really indefensible because Kurt Russell's character brainwashes Goldie Hawn's; “it's a Rapemantic comedy”), Minority Report, Dreamscape (filmed in Stockton, CA), Innerspace, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Golden Child, Friday, Caddyshack, The Matrix, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Flashdance, The Truman Show, The Wizard of Oz, Howard the Duck and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jack Burton is a very influential protagonist, maybe even more so than Snake Plissken. He's sort of John Wayne as a buffoon. Bruce Willis' persona owes something to Jack Burton. If you want to hear an even more in-depth discussion of Big Trouble in Little China, check out this episode of the Blank Check podcast. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owns the remake rights to Big Trouble in Little China and makes noises about a remake from time to time. John Carpenter's soundtrack (and especially the theme song) are a must-listen. Here's the New York Magazine article in which Jody Rosen first coined the term “Bro-Country.” Here's a history of the Country laundry-list song. Dr. Suess' pants with no one inside them are from the last story in the Sneetches book. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line is maybe the ur-text of Bro-Country. Or– going further back– in could be either “Honky Tonkin'” or “Jambalaya” by Hank Williams. Other songs discussed by include “Big Green Tractor” and “Dirt Road Anthem” by Jason Aldean, “Sand in My Boots” by Morgan Wallen, “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” by Trace Adkins, “Dilemma” by Nelly w/ Kelly Rowland, “If That Ain't Country” by David Allan Coe, “That's My Kind of Night” by Luke Brian, “Friday” by Rebecca Black, “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” by Hank Williams Jr., “If You've Got the Money, I've Got the Time” by Lefty Frizzell, “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Boys Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “New Truck” by Dylan Scott, “Beer With My Friends” by Shy Carter, “Beer” and “Turned Up On the Weekend” by Branchez & Big Wet, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick, and “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt. Paul Bigsby is one of the most important figures in the world of electric guitar development. Of course, everyone knows about his namesake (and still enduring) vibrato design. But the ultra-rare creations he made before the vibrato took off - innovative lap steels, pedal steels, electrics, and neck conversions - are the stuff of legend. These instruments, primarily built for country stars in the '40s and '50s, helped usher in  and influence the modern electric guitar. New York City's Retrofret Vintage Guitars recently posted what might be the last Spanish-necked guitar that Bigsby ever built. Previously undocumented, this guitar was finished on September 15, 1958 for a Midwest studio owner named Larry (whose name is still engraved in the pickguard). At the time, Larry's guitar order cost around $400. Today's asking price? $750,000. On this week's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to the always-lively Steve Uhrik and Peter Kohman from Retrofret about it. We hear about how this guitar ended up at their store, Bigsby's incredible legacy as a guitar designer (and why it's so hard to copy one even today), the evolution of early electric guitar design, Bigsby's strained relationship with Leo Fender (and Semie Moseley), the skinny "hot rod" neck that Bigsby specialized in, and the time Merle Haggard bought Lefty Frizzell's Gibson J-200 from Retrofret (and the gamble with Haggard they politely declined). We also hear about Retrofret's recent video shoot with Bill Frisell on this Bigsby guitar and what Bill thought of it. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOZ9eBrFZz0 This is an entertaining chat about both an extremely collectible instrument and the rich history of the electric guitar. We hope you enjoy it.
