Send us a text- On-Demand Programme Link - https://mailchi.mp/bb2a7b851246/kairos-centreI like this article by Luke Gilkerson (as long ago as 2012), when he interviewed a Neuroscientist called Dr William Struthers - author of the book "How pornograpghy Hijacks the male brain"Dr Struthers explains what hormones and neurotransmitters are involved in porn addiction. Hope you find this intriguing and interesting:Testosterone: Testosterone drives a man's interest in sex. Fantasizing or viewing images, will release testosterone. This creates an intense and growing desire for sexual release.Norepinephrine: Is the brain's version of adrenaline. It is responsible for making us alert, help us to wake up, fall asleep and to stay alert upon the task in hand. During sexual arousal, it alerts the brain to “Something is about to happen and we need to get ready for it.” It “ramps up” the brain for activity.Serotonin: is a neurotransmitter tied to mood. Low serotonin levels can lead to struggling with depression. Although not specifically tied to sex, when sexual arousal happens, serotonin is released in small packets in the brain. It elevates the overall sense of excitement and enjoyment. Dopamine: Dopamine is not sexually specific (like testosterone). The brain is wired in such a way that it wants to remember where our natural drives are satisfied; Just like when we are thirsty, we know where to find water. The brain is wired to place significance on the place we found it so we can return to that place. Dopamine is the drive-related neurotransmitter that accomplishes this mental focus for us. When we have a dopamine surge, the sense we feel is, “I have got to have this thing. This is what I need right now, and here's where I get it.” Dopamine is the way your brain remembers how sexual craving was satisfied in the past, pushing you to seek out the same thing in the future. For the porn addict, Dopamine creates a sharp focus on finding porn.Endogenous Opiates: The body produces natural forms of opium called endorphins. Endorphins relieve pain. Like opium, it gives a euphoric feeling of well-being. When a man ejaculates, these opiates create a “high” and a wave of pleasure coursing over the body.Oxytocin and Vasopressin: These are hormones released in the brain in response to ejaculation. They help lay down the long-term memories for the cells. They “bind” a person's memories to the object that gave the sexual pleasure. When someone returns to pornography again and again, this cements a “relationship” with what he has seen. So, bringing them all together: As a male goes through his day, testosterone levels begin to increase as he stares at the source of his sexual attraction or fantasizes. He creates a desire for sexual release. Norepinephrine is being released, making his brain more and more primed and ready for action. Serotonin is also released, creating a sense of excitement about the pending sexual “payoff.” Dopamine is focusing the mind, telling the brain, “You have to go back to the attraction where that reliable payoff is at.” As he seeks out the attraction, he masturbates, releasing endogenous opiates into the brain, giving him a rush of euphoria. Oxytocin and vasopressin are released, binding him to the images he sees.Repeat, beckons in the immediate future – when it will all start again and again, and again and again….Until the cycle is interrupted. My guests this week are watchmaker Dr. Rebecca Struthers and Lewis Heath, founder of AnOrdain. The two are friends and collaborators, so it was fun to get them both together for a conversation about watchmaking in the U.K., what they're up to, and what's next. Lewis Heath founded AnOrdain in 2015. Since then, the Scottish brand has become known for its beautifully crafted enamel dials. He founded the company after working as a product designer and deciding he wanted to make something closer to home. Dr. Rebecca Struthers is a watchmaker and co-founder of Struthers Watchmakers along with her husband and fellow watchmaker, Craig. The two began their business as restorers, but after realizing they'd made pretty much every other component for other people's watches, decided to build their own. This was the beginning of Project 248, their effort to build their own in-house movement. Struthers also became the first watchmaker in the United Kingdom to complete a Ph.D program, making her the country's first "watch doctor." Show Notes3:00: Lewis' Dubley & Schaldenbrand watch4:59: Rebecca's HSNY talk on Dutch forgeries8:38: Hands on Time, by Rebecca Struthers (publisher page); read the Hodinkee review here9:16: Value Proposition: The AnOrdain Model 19:50: AnOrdain and Struthers Project 248 enamel dials14:04: Hands-On: AnOrdain Model 1 'Fume'33:45: British Horological Institute58:00: Rebecca's Movado Weems watch

How do you navigate the complex world of relationships, parenting, and identity while embracing your true self?   This week, I'm joined by Dana Struthers from New Zealand, who answers this million dollar question for us through the lens of her own matrescence journey.  Matrescence has been no straight road for Dana. The journey into and through Motherhood saw Dana experiencing pregnancy loss, severe postnatal depression & anxiety, a changing career, a break up in her marriage, and having her own sexual realization and Queer awakening. In this episode, Dana opens up about her decision to end her marriage,  her journey into dating women, and her vastly different birth experiences, while exploring the importance of being mindful of our biases and the opinions of our ego in the birth space. With her now-partner, Rebecca, we discussed their experiences during lockdown, navigating relationships and parenting, as well as Dana's experience with postnatal depression and the significant changes she went through during this period. Finally, join us as we delve into the balancing of divine masculine and feminine energy within a woman-loving-woman relationship and how it shows up within the partnership and household. Dana's valuable insights on the importance of standing in your own truth and being aware of your own biases serve as a powerful reminder for all of us to live life unapologetically and intentionally.Connect with Dana on IG (@BirthCraftNZ)  & TikTok (@danabirthcraft)Dana is a Transition to Parenting Educator & Seasons of Matrescence Guide.  With BirthCraft, Dana creates and delivers evidence based  info with a holistic approach to expectant parents as well as a project in a high school with students (who are not pregnant!).   Based in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Dana does face to face as well as zoom sessions with clients in NZ as well as the world for Antenatal Education, Birth Planning & Support as well as Matrescence connections. We travelled to meet Rebecca and Craig of Struthers Watches in their workshop in Leek, England. We featured their story in Edition Two of our biannual publication; We Are Makers. It was great to catch up two years later to finally meet and have a more in-depth conversation about them and their journey.   Recently Rebecca has written her own book. Written by Rebecca Struthers and illustrated by Craig, you can order her first book 'Hands of Time', A Watchmaker's History of Time. Hands of Time is an intricate and uniquely personal exploration of the history, science, philosophy, and craft of timekeeping."When we were at uni, which is where we originally met, the two of us brought down the average age of the watchmaking course by about 40 years. One of the other students joked that time becomes more interesting the less of it that you have. It was like a retirement hobby as opposed to a career. But the watch industry has been growing massively in recent years. One school in Manchester started to teach basic manufacturing about 15 years ago, and we're now seeing graduates from that course setting up their own workshops after an initial spell in industry. The industry is getting younger and it's really promising to see." - Extract from Ed.2We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makersWebsite: https://wearemakers.shop/Struthers Interview was published in Edition Two of We Are Makers.Available for purchase:  https://www.wearemakers.shop/shop#!/Edition-TwoStruthers Watches Insta: @strutherswatchmakersWebsite: https://strutherswatchmakers.co.ukRebecca's book: https://strutherswatchmakers.co.uk/updates/2023/1/12/hands-of-time-is-now-available-for-pre-order - Like this podcast and want to watch it? EPISODE 35: The Spider-Babies, Seren and Rey see out the rest of the year with a fun-filled chat on the second issue of Jess' OG series - SPIDER-WOMAN VOL. 1 #2 'A Sword in Hand' Release Date February 2, 1978 Cover Date May, 1978   Writer(s) Marv Wolfman Penciler(s) Carmine Infantino Inker(s) Tony DeZuniga Colorist(s) Janice Cohen Letterer(s) Irv Watanabe Editor(s) Marv Wolfman   SCORES: Seren - 4/5, Rey - 3.5/5 Tears of Loneliness Remember - To Know Her Is To Fear Her! Enjoy! SYNOPSIS (courtesty of Wiki): Jessica Drew, as Spider-Woman, finds herself drawn to Britain's Natural History Museum in London, and specifically towards Morgan le Fay's Excalibur. However before she can pull the sword out of the stone, she is confronted by officers of Scotland Yard and is forced to flee. This gives Slapper Struthers, a thief who broke into the museum, a moment alone to pull the sword out himself.[Continuity 1] In doing so, he is connected through the ages to Morgan le Fay, who chooses him to be her tool in the modern age. She sends the soul of a knight to possess Struthers' body changing him into her warrior, Excalibur. When the police officers hear the commotion, Excalibur attacks them, drawing Spider-Woman back to defend them, but she is knocked out by one of his mystical blasts for long enough to allow him to escape. Exhausted by her encounter, Spider-Woman leaves the scene and returns home to rest. The next day, as Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman attempts to find employment with minimal success. Walking the streets of London she once more believes that people's aversion to her is because experiments conducted on her years ago by the High Evolutionary has made her more than human, and people can sense this on an unconscious level.[Continuity 2] Eventually, she is drawn into the shop of Charles Magnus, who promises to read her fortune for free. He tells her that he sees a great destiny in store for her in America. At that same moment, Jerry Hunt -- a SHIELD liaison to Scotland Yard -- continues to obsess over the files about Spider-Woman and once more orders her to be brought to him. His colleague, Frank, is concerned about his obsession with this mystery woman and asks why he is so determined to find her. After a moment to think it over, Jerry admits that he has fallen in love with the masked vigilante. Meanwhile, Slapper Struther's is in an Underground station when some force pushes him out onto the tracks. This is Mordan le Fay, who transforms Struthers into Excalibur once. Seeing an approaching subway train as a dragon, he destroys it with a single swing of his enchanted sword. She then orders Excalibur to return to the surface. There he uses his magical abilities to summon a horse so he can carry out his mission for her. By this time, Jessica Drew has returned home to think about what Magnus told her, and contemplates about going to America. Going out for a walk, she sees Excalibur on the rampage and changes into Spider-Woman to try and stop him. She fails to stop Excalibur from making his way to the shop owned by Charles Magus. Setting the building ablaze, Excalibur demands that Magnus turn over a book of spells so that he can give it to his master. However, Magnus refuses to turn over the book as the black arts must not be used ever again. As Spider-Woman recovers from Excalibur's attack, word of her battle reaches Jerry Hunt who rushes to the scene. At that moment, Magnus distracts Excalibur long enough for Spider-Woman to knock his sword out of his hand. She then prevents him from recovering it long that the warrior reverts back to normal. Slapper Struthers is then knocked out by Spider-Woman with a single punch. In the aftermath of the battle, Magnus explains that Morgan le Fay is an old enemy of his, despite the gulf of centuries that separate them. Then, with a wave of his hand, Magnus makes his shop disappear and tells Spider-Woman that their destinies await them in America. By the time Jerry Hunt and the authorities arrive on the scene the only thing they find is the unconscious body of Slapper Struthers. Pinned to his shirt is a note that simply reads "America Spider-Woman". Deducing that Spider-Woman is going to the United States, Jerry decides to put in a request to his superiors at SHIELD so he can follow her there. VENOM BLASTS (things to look out for in episode)!!
