Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's 700 SeriesThis episode documents the final Cajun recordings on George Khoury's Khoury's label. The Khoury's label began in 1950 and lasted into the 1960's. The 700 series is basically 45 rpm releases beginning with Nathan Abshire's 701 in 1957. Khoury released 6 Cajun records on the 700 series as listed below. But by 1960's, he reissued several of his old 78 rpm recordings on 45 rpm. I've included two examples of those. To me, these are some of the greatest examples of Cajun music in the late 1950's. By the late 1950's the studios improved their sound and the pressings improved. This would lead to other labels releasing great Cajun music in the late 1950's into the 1960's. But Khoury's musical legacy is filled with absolute great music.Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Crying Pine Grove Blues" (Khoury's 701A) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "LSU French Waltz" (Khoury's 701B) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Sha Meon Waltz" (Khoury's 702A) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Midnight Blues" (Khoury's 702B) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Cannonball Special" (Khoury's 704A) 1958Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Red Rock Waltz" (Khoury's 704B) 1958Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Perradin Twoster" (Khoury's 709A) 1959Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Jolie Te Blun" (Khoury's 709B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "Elton Two Step" (Khoury's 725B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "La Robe Barre" (Khoury's 725A) 1959)Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "New Iberia Stomp" (Khoury's 725A) 1960Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "La Valse De Bon Amies" (Khoury's 725B) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Evangeline Waltz" (Khoury's 615A) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Johnny Can't Dance" (Khoury's 615B) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960 Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- "La Waltz A Belezere" (Khoury's 610A)(45 rpm repress) 1960Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- " "Choupique Two Step" (Khoury's 610B)(45 rpm repress) 1960

It's been a minute since our last episode … sorry to keep you waiting to hear just why Bailey on Greenwood Avenue was shut down, but I couldn't explain how Bailey closed without the help of Principal Christian Sawyer and Dr. Alan Coverstone who was the Director of the iZone in MNPS and the administrator who got the ball rolling for the Bailey transformation – and those two guys are tough to pin down. Once we got to talking, I was fascinated by the way Christian and Alan reflected on their experience with Bailey, taking responsibility, not blaming anybody else, but still speaking forthrightly about systemic blind spots, racism, and the political ecology of the district and the state that made it extremely difficult to set a course and stick with it. As we've said from the very beginning, this is both object lesson and cautionary tale. This is the final episode of Season 1. In the second season, slated to drop as school reopens in September, we'll be thinking about lessons learned. We won't leave Bailey behind, but we'll be bringing other schools and other educators into dialogue with the Bailey team and the Bailey experience. Look for us then as we think more about what teaming looks like in elementary or secondary schools, as we consider the ups and downs of teacher residencies, as we explore how committed educators are able to focus on what's possible despite systemic constraints, and more from families and students. If you have an idea you'd like to have us explore or some ways you and your colleagues have found to focus on the relations and responsibility that have to be at the center of our educational efforts, please drop a note to chasingbaileypod@gmail.com. They succeeded, but their achievement was bittersweet. In 2016, the district closed that school. Still, those who were there knew they had stumbled onto something special, some important educational truths that might help all of us find our way out of the morass that COVID 19 has left us in. Our Host is Barb Stengel, a retired professor of educational practice at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College. She is a self-described fan of the Bailey experiment.Between 2012 and 2016, Barb spent one day a week at Bailey, coordinating the school's collaboration with Peabody, and serving as an informal cheerleader while also learning from this remarkable effort. She knew early on it was a story worth telling. So over the past year, Barb has spent time with dozens of staff, students, parents, and district administrators who were eager to talk about their experiences. The question of a school's “success” is the thread underlying this entire podcast – and the specific target we aim at today by listening to the voice and experience of four representative Bailey students. In the face of all we could put in the basket of “learning loss,” the educators at Bailey reconstructed their interactions and their expectations to experience success for themselves and their students …. Yes, success (or at least substantial improvement) in test scores, but success understood far more broadly and deeply to incorporate mental health, social and emotional capacity, academic achievement, and growth in intelligence. Listen to four Bailey students speak for themselves about why they were there, what they remember, and how they have made their way – with stories still very much being told. Success for these young adults is not so much about achievement understood in test-based terms as about who these young people are and why we might feel good about who the Bailey students have become and are still becoming. You will meet Damisha, Brandon, Maia, and Zee, all in their early 20s. As you'll see, their stories differ but what they share is that Bailey, a middle school, was a place where they experienced both love and limits. It felt to them like a place where they could grow and develop. 00:00 A meditation on “success” in school Barbara Stengel04:50 Introduction, Barbara Stengel06:03 Damisha Hanserd, transfer from KIPP and East, who stayed through 8th grade The power of Black teachers Getting in trouble and academic achievement Education at Bailey better than East Juggling college, the pandemic, and responsibility as a mom Bailey shaped me17:31 Brandon Tok, transfer from Rutherford County, who spent his 8th grade year From the “best” high school, leaving college for a family business Diversity among students at Bailey Influential, even “life-saving,” teachers Parental presence matters Bailey's social impact31:00 Maia Black, arrived in 6th grade and left after 7th “Trouble” moved her to Bailey Athletics as a form of self-discipline Student diversity at Bailey Teachers wanting to understand Admin working together for student success All that Bailey had to offer 47:25 Zionna Jennings, at Bailey before the Sawyer/Jasper era When people believed in me On my own and overwhelmed Love and limits – and a new family Mental health in disadvantaged communities Bailey as a school community for “student teachers” (Not) Reaching for the stars64:20 Wrap-up and lead in to Bailey's being closed Barbara Stengel, Christian Sawyer In this seventh episode, there are references to a variety of social, educational and historical news and commentary. October 31, 2022Chasing BaileyEpisode 6: Allyship at its Best? Black Teachers Lead the Way Have we unintentionally reinforced a stereotype about Black and white teachers in the last two episodes? In a majority Black school, do the Black teachers carry the social-emotional weight (and expertise), while the white teachers are the instructional and academic experts? That's definitely not the story we wanted to tell about Bailey, so in this episode, we address the issue head on, inviting teachers and teacher leaders to talk about how Black and white learned to work together by working together over time and by facing “difficult conversations” about race head on. We take up the difference between “transactional allyship” at the beginning that morphed into “allyship in action” as trust and understanding developed. We look at the sometimes invisible labor that Black educators are asked to take up (and what it costs) and the phenomenon of epistemic injustice that Black educators experience all too often. 00:00 Introduction: Allyship across Color Lines, Barbara Stengel03:20 The Danger in Narratives of Erasure Global Literacy Team Leader Whitney Bradley, Stengel07:18 The Costs of Allyship Exceptional Education Team Leader LaKeisha Harding, Math Team Leader Kelly Aldridge Boyd11:57 Invisible Labor Stengel, Karen Dorris Wolfson, Bradley, Harding19:14 Acknowledging the Critical Role of Black Educators Stengel, ELA Teacher Charlsie Wigley, STEM Coordinator Julie Hasfjord25:20 But Missing What It Cost Them? September 30, 2022Chasing BaileyEpisode 5: To Fail Safely: Teachers' Creativity as the Lifeblood of Learning In this fifth episode of Chasing Bailey, we consider the question of curriculum. What was the curriculum that powered academic success at Bailey and how did it come to be? The short answer is that teachers created the curriculum on the fly by focusing laser-like on their students' needs and prior understanding, freed up to do that by a principal who saw brilliance in the teachers and the scholars. Crystal Shawanda is a gifted, inspiring artist who's been singing her heart out her whole life. She got her start in music as a kid growing up in the Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, and as a teenager, she followed her dreams all the way to Music City: Nashville, Tennessee. She quickly scored a house gig at one of Nashville's most storied honky-tonks, really paid her dues, and wound up signing with RCA Records, the legendary label which has been home to musical giants from Hank Snow to Elvis Presley. With her RCA debut, Crystal became the first Indigenous artist ever to enter the top 20 on Billboard's Country Albums Chart; she had truly arrived as a hitmaking major-label country music recording artist. But that's when she felt her artistic voice pulling her down another path. About a decade ago, she branched off to form her own label, and pursued a new journey as an original blues artist. Since that time, she's become a multiple Juno Award winner, a global force on the blues scene, and a role model for Indigenous artists everywhere. In this episode, we caught up with the incomparable Crystal Shawanda in the midst of a months-long tour, in a rare moment that found her briefly back in her old stomping grounds on Manitoulin Island. She opens up about her heartfelt new album Midnight Blues, out on True North Records September 30th, 2022; influences from Hank Williams to Howlin' Wolf, from Buffy Sainte-Marie to Celine Dion; how despite despair, intergenerational trauma, and loss, music has the power to bring freedom, connection and hope; and how her path, which has taken her from the First Nation where she grew up, to Nashville, and now to the global blues stage, has brought her closer to her roots and her home community than ever.

August 31, 2022Chasing BaileyEpisode 4: Love and Limits: Re-making Culture for/and Learning at Bailey In this fourth episode of Chasing Bailey, we turn to the critical issue of culture for learning and growth. We think about the transformation that supported the Bailey shift from “persistently dangerous” and academically unmoored in 2011 to solidly “Satisfactory” on the district's School Assessment Measure in 2015. That movement was spearheaded by Chief of Culture Claire Jasper who, with her “Culture Team,” steered the change based on “Love and Limits.” 00:00 Introduction: Love and Limits: Re-making Culture for/and Learning at Bailey04:25 What “Love and Limits” Looks Like Chief of Culture Dr. Claire Jasper, Narrator Barbara Stengel22:10 The Socio-political and Educational History of Bailey Middle School Stengel, Teacher Leader Whitney Bradley Weathers, Principal Christian Sawyer27:20 Critical, Pragmatic, Idealistic, Progressive Vision Sawyer29:50 The Culture Team and How it Operated Dean Yolanda Porter, Social Worker Keith Ekhator, Communities in Schools Coordinator Kevin Haggard, Stengel36:43 Love and Limits but not ‘Muscle': How to Circumvent the School to Prison Pipeline through Trauma-Informed and Restorative Practices Porter, Haggard, Ekhator, Stengel, Resident Kenan Kerr, Resident Laura Laufman, Science Teacher Cassie Beasley44:01 An Intentional Culture of Respect, Shared Beliefs, and Laughter Counselor April Roberts, Dean Art Taylor, Haggard, Stengel49:15 Resistance?? So over the past year, Barb has spent time with dozens of staff, students, parents, and district administrators who were eager to talk about their experiences. July 31, 2022 Chasing Bailey Episode 3: Locating Leadership at the Heart of Teaching and Learning The third episode of Chasing Bailey looks at how teacher leadership multiplies the point and power of teams in schools. Four teacher leaders – Kelly Aldridge Boyd , LeKeisha Harding, Whitney Bradley Weathers, and Lindsey Nelson -- describe their experience and outline how they grew into their roles. Host Barb Stengel links the work of these teacher leaders to the actions of the school principal, Christian Sawyer, highlighting how his willingness to let go was as important as his efforts to guide and support. In the end, we are left to wonder what love's got to do with it. 00:00 Introduction: Locating Leadership at the Heart of Teaching and Learning 04:37 The Roles and Responsibilities of Teacher Leaders at Bailey, Kelly Aldridge Boyd, LeKeisha Harding, Whitney Bradley Weathers, and Lindsey Nelson with Narrator Barb Stengel 11:05 How Much Time Were Teachers Leaders Teaching Kids? Episode 27 Watt Elmer? Show Notes Song: 00:00 Intro: 00:54 Feedback: 01:23 Regarding episode 25 Thomas, WC5B, says he has changed his mind about what he recommends to new hams for a first radio, based on Richards comments. Ray, KO4RB, also talks about episode 25 and his thoughts on a handy-talk as a first radio. Jerry, KD0BIK, of The Practical Amateur Radio Podcast disagreed with some of Richard's comments about media coverage of hurricane damage (Ike and Gustav) along the gulf coast. Richard's comments were meant to be specific to his local media. Ray, KO4RB, also writes to thank Richard for the podcast, and extols their virtues as a tool for elmering new hams. He's also exploring Linux for use in his shack, experiments with digital modes, DStar, and more. He also made a donation! Rich, AB6TY, says he listens as he works in the welding shop, and enjoys the information and music. He loves CW and encourages others to give it a try, and recommends FISTS and SKCC. He reminds Richard that new hams should be aware of split-frequency operations while chasing DX. He asks "What is a 'lid'?" A lid is a bad operator. www.fists.orgwww.skccgroup.com Donations: 17:25 Rich AB6TY, Ray KO4RB made donations, which allowed the purchase of a microphone, and a new machine to record the podcast. Consider a dollar per episode. Every dollar helps. Remember, we have to pay for the hosting service. shop at Amazon through the link at the website. Thanks! 19:55 Russ K5TUX and Richard released the first episode of Linux in the Ham Shack. Give it a listen Song: 22:07 "Night Time is the Right Time" by Elvin Bishop, featuring John Nemeth & Angela Strehli, from the album "The Blues Rolls On" Buzzword: 23:19 SWR and Watt MetersMeasures power out in watts and the SWR (standing wave ratio). Higher SWR is bad, as most modern radios will reduce their output if the SWR is too high, so it's a good idea to monitor the SWR. They can also be used to tune your wire or mobile antennas. Song: 31:58 "What Is That You Got" by Magic Slim & the Teardrops from the album "Midnight Blues" Topic: 34:17 How can you be a better Elmer? Elmer is the amateur radio term for a mentor. Anyone can be an Elmer. It just takes the desire to share what you know with someone else. It does take patience. Talk up the hobby with other folks. Teach a class. Get involved with one of the scouting organizations. Wear a shirt that proclaims your interest in the hobby. Be available at a special event station to answer questions. Song: 57:17 "Sleep" by Albert Cummings from the album "Feel So Good: Albert Cummings" Closing theme:65:04

In childhood, Williams and his half-brother James "Pookie" Young received encouragement and tutelage from their uncle, the blues guitarist, songwriter and recording artist J. B. Hutto, and by 1975 the half-siblings had formed the first version of the Blues Imperials. Since 1989, the band's lineup has been Williams (lead guitar and vocals), Michael Garrett (rhythm guitar and vocals), James Young (bass) and Kelly Littleton (drums). Living Blues magazine described the band as "Rough-and-ready South and West Side blues...Ed's swirling, snarling slide guitar work can be riveting, and The Imperials pound out blues-rock riffs and rhythms behind him as if they're overdosing on boogie juice." Guitar Player called the band "a snarling boogie-blues machine." A decade later, Alligator Records offered them the chance to record a track, "Young Thing", for a compilation album, New Bluebloods (1987). Producer and label owner Bruce Iglauer encouraged them to record additional material, and they cut a full album's worth of material at that session, released as Roughhousin' (1986). They then appeared at music festivals and toured widely. Their second album, Chicken, Gravy & Biscuits, was released in 1989, and their third, What You See Is What You Get, in 1992. At this point the group disbanded. Williams issued two solo albums, Keep On Walking, on which he was joined by Dave Weld, a former member of the Blues Imperials, and Who's Been Talking (1998), pairing Williams with Willie Kent. In 1999 the release of Get Wild marked the group's reunion. It was followed by Heads Up (2002), Rattleshake (2006), Full Tilt (2008) and Jump Start (2012). Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have appeared multiple times at the Chicago Blues Festival and festivals and clubs around the world. In June 2008, Williams played on Magic Slim's album Midnight Blues. In June 2009, Williams was a guest on the radio quiz show Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, produced by Chicago Public Radio and National Public Radio, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials have been nominated for eight Blues Music Awards as Band of the Year and have won that award twice.

_KNZ075_ It's hard not to expect a release from Jushouse to be mesmerizing, even with those expectations the “Music In Me” EP delivers an intrinsic display of sheer quality in his expression of his musical journey. Balearic, live and soulful sounds are meticulously explored in this supremely dynamic release. With the support of K-White, Jushouse has truly redefined what the soulful scene should sound like. Michele and the Midnight Blues can be heard on many blues radio stations throughout the U.S.A. and in London, Paris, Dublin, Italy, Denmark, India and soon Argentina. In a few months they went from a local band in the Southeastern US, to a band heard all over the world in part thanks to the 2006 International Blues Challenge and thanks to their 1st commercial CD release "Eyes Set To Midnight". CD’s are selling in Europe and around the states as fan mail arrives. Their song 'Better than I' is getting airplay on rock and adult contemporary stations too. The cross over airplay has been a welcome surprise.Born from weekly blues jams in Wilmington, NC. Actress Michele Seidman followed CFBS jams through multiple locations and venues for a decade, singing in every location. By the year 2000 she felt strong enough to form a band and you guessed it, she found most of the players through blues jams including, Madison Bunting on guitar, Wayne Dean on Bass and Dane Britt or Tony Mallard on drums round out this up and coming band.Michele and the Midnight Blues have been called a vastly talented crew who are the "perfect compliment to their singer and they love to perform". Recently dubbed “Wildly popular in South Eastern, NC”. They have always done a variety of blues styles (Memphis, Chicago, Texas, New Orleans and more) and they take pride in converting people to the genre because of it. They live up to one of their motto's "Blues is more than cry in your beer music" and it is how they do their part to help Keep the Blues Alive.
