On March 23rd, 1911, the luxury passenger ship, the SS Yongala started its 99th voyage from Mackay to Cairns. But much like Betty White and Prince Phillip before her, the SS Yongala didn't live to see its 100th voyage. Not long after setting sail from Mackay, a tropical storm warning forced all ships to return to port. All ships heeded the message...except the SS Yongala, which never arrived in Cairns and was assumed to have sunk. It would take 47 years before a recreational diver named Bill would find the shipwreck, almost perfectly preserved off the coast of Ayr, Queensland. The ship didn't make headlines again until 2003 when an American couple took a honeymoon diving trip to the Yongala and only one of them survived. Skip straight to the story: approx 17:25 Jacob shares the story with Carlo Ritchie We give you just the gist, but if you want more, there's this:  Check out the Townsville Maritime Museum's page https://www.tmml.org.au/yongala-artefacts/  The ship's Wikipedia page has a solid list of links to articles from the time ship sank https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Yongala  Relive the story, but with pictures of the wreck today https://www.divephotoguide.com/underwater-photography-special-features/article/ship-storm-racehorse-moonshine-yongala-wreck-queensland-australia/  https://www.scubadiving.com/history-australia-yongala-shipwreck#page-5  Watch some pretty footage from a diver's perspective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNch9dTAoQI  Start here to learn more about the Tina Watson tragedy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Tina_Watson   Listen to Rosie's episode about the Titanic: https://link.chtbl.com/47kg7Wi4  Follow us on Insta: @justthegistpodcast Send us your suGISTions for stories and guests: justthegistpodcast@gmail.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now to a new podcast launched here at RNZ today all about whether or not the Titanic did actually sink. Not a topic you'd expect our team to delve into, but when comedian Tim Batt and his Australian comedy pal Carlo Ritchie were chatting a few years ago, Carlo mentioned he wasn't sure that the ship really did go down. That's turned in a very funny 6 part podcast series featuring our very own Kim Hill alongside some of our best known comedians.

This week I had the pleasure of talking to improviser, teacher, actor, comedian, podcaster and dulcet toned wordsmith, Carlo Ritchie. He's one of the founding directors (and current Artistic Director) of Improv Theatre Sydney - Sydney's first and only dedicated improv theatre school. He's also one half of acclaimed improv comedy duo ‘The Bear Pack' alongside fellow ITS director Steen Raskopoulos and the pair have sold out shows at comedy festivals around the world from Melbourne to Edinburgh Fringe and even the coveted Cat Laughs Festival in Kilkenny.Over the course of our chat, we trace the roots of Carlo's affinity with language and see how this passion guided him through life to the founding of ITS; that 5 years and 840 students later, now has a physical home in Redfern. We talk about his strange obsession with the Titanic, how The Bear Pack was born and of course, he tells me about the year in Poland ‘drinking beer near the brewery and teaching English in the evenings' that quite literally changed the course of his life.I had heaps of fun chatting to Carlo and I hope you enjoy our chat too!(A little FYI for those that don't know - Improv aka Improvisation is a collaborative method of creating live, spontaneous theatre. Where people or ‘players' conceive original scenes in the moment, spontaneously discovering ideas, relationships and worlds – all from a single audience suggestion. It's pretty dreamy stuff.)If this podcast has left you feeling inspired to do some improv and you live in Sydney - look up a class at the fantastic ITS (improvtheatresydney.com.au), now at its Redfern home, and if you want to keep up with the man himself - you can follow Carlo on instagram @carloritchieIf you enjoyed the chat please let me know with a pun infused comment and share the episode with a friend. Thanks for listening!
