On the show today… In exciting TV news, Disney has announced a wave of local Australian content plans for its streaming service, Disney+, featuring beloved Australian creators including Miranda Tapsell, Rove McManus, and Deborah Mailman. And this week there have been a string of reports and paparazzi photos indicating that the new season of The Bachelor has started filming with not one, but two, leading men. But after an intensive investigation into these claims, we've discovered some pretty big plotholes. Plus, Victoria Beckham has given a controversial new interview to Grazia saying that thin bodies are no longer in fashion. Her comments are very much a desperate attempt to make her new collection more socially acceptable, but once you peel back the layers of what she is actually saying, it's a cry for help from both her and the industry. Kelly Dent: Ending the Global Wildlife Trade

The Good Problem

Today's episode features Kelly Dent of World Animal Protection talking about ending the global wildlife trade. The global trade in wildlife is worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually and includes both the legal and illegal trade in animals. While the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora boasts a membership of 183 countries, many argue it is insufficient, unsustainable and ineffective to protect vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species. The system is full of loopholes which allow trade in wildlife to continue unchecked, with very little ability to differentiate between legal and illegal trade. Calls to end the global wildlife trade have been growing through this pandemic, not only due to the likelihood that COVID-19 is a zoonotic pathogen, meaning it comes from animals, but also due to the sheer cost of the pandemic to human life and economy. As the population grows, pressure on wildlife and wild places also grows, meaning more interaction between both and more likelihood of animal / human conflict and disease transmission. I invited Kelly Dent to chat about why we need a blanket ban on the trade in wildlife. Kelly is the Director of External Engagement with World Animal Protection and a lifelong activist and has 25 years experience lobbying and campaigning on climate change, poverty, corporate accountability, trade, labour and human rights around the world. Kelly is reading 'Such a Fun Age' by Kiley Reid; 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy; 'Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows' by Melanie Joy; 'Me and White Supremacy' by Layla F Saad. Kelly is listening to 7AM; 'Nice White Parents' New York Times; 'Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power' by Nakkiah Lui & Miranda Tapsell; Rabbit Hole, New York Times.

For almost all of us, mentioning the words Primary or High School are enough to bring back memories of endlessly creative, but equally cutting nicknames, random acts of ridicule and outright bullying. Reliving her school days in a convo with her bestie Michael, Em realised she has always been made to feel like an ‘other' and it's had a resounding effect on her entire life. It means that Em has become relentlessly competitive and pushes herself to achieve great things, just so she can fit into this Australian ideal of what a woman should be. It's only recently that she's realised she's never going to fit that ideal and that's okay. To survive, she searched out other ‘others', and eventually made peace with who she is and came to the realisation that she is enough. After that cathartic release, it's on to Masterchef, where their tasting challenge offered up cubed morsels of food for identification, although Em was unhappy with the standard of some of the ‘mystery' items, especially when her 1 year old Elio could easily identify things like apple and carrot. They were sad to see Brendan go home, and Em even tried really hard to find some nice things to say about Andy, plus they think they've finally arrived at who they want to win and created a winning slogan for them to use too. They also take some time to shine a light on a great new podcast from Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell. It's called ‘Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power' and reveals how important Deb balls are to the Indigenous community and how they've reclaimed them as a result. It also brings everything full circle because both Em and Michael's debutante experience only helped to add to their High School trauma, so get ready for a lot of reliving the past and laughing in the face of it as well. When I say ‘debutante ball' what comes to mind for you? A bunch of teenage girls, giggling, buzzing with nerves and excitement, dressed in flowing gowns, off to a flash venue, for the night of their lives, ready to debut into society - whatever that means. When you picture those girls and that event, do you picture them as being Aboriginal? And, if I told you that Aboriginal people have a history with the debutante ball that reaches back to the 1967 referendum, would you be surprised? Debutante: Race, Resistance and Girl Power is the brand new podcast from none other than the dynamic duo that is Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell. From the 16th of June, through this audible original podcast, you'll be able to follow their journey from a teatime etiquette lesson in London, where the concept for the debutante ball began, along a trail to discover how First Nations women across the globe have made this tradition their own. Nakkiah and Miranda ask: can beauty, poise and politeness actually empower them? Or is it better to get angry and start shouting? I am absolutely thrilled to say, Nakkiah and Miranda are my guests on todays podcast. As huge admirer of both of their works, to say it was hard not to fangirl on this zoom call I had with them, is an understatement. In this chat, we talk about the new podcast, feminism, sisterhood, beauty in a black body and why they love working together. . . . I've been chasing Miranda Tapsell to Take 5 for years. The proud Larrakia Tiwi woman has proven hard to pin down because she's been so busy making movies, starring in TV shows, and writing. Many of us first saw Taps in 2012, in her breakthrough role as Cynthia in The Sapphires. But she's also been a star of stage and small screen, performing in plays, on telly as Martha in Love Child, and a regular guest on Get Krackin', and most recently as the lead star and co-writer of Top End Wedding. In amongst it all, Miranda Tapsell penned her memoir Top End Girl capturing a particularly hectic time where she not only wrote a film about getting married, but got hitched herself. Across five tunes, Miranda takes you from her childhood in Darwin and Jabiru, to what called her to acting, and the power of seeing yourself and people like you, on screen. Rom-coms are back, and in Long Shot - starring the unlikely (but not impossible, as the poster says) pairing of Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen - and Miranda Tapsell's charming Top End Wedding, Karl reckons the breadth of the form has never been more apparent.
