Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week writing as activism is taking us to a land with a long history of activist thought ans action - Ireland. Born and raised in Nigeria, Dagogo Hart migrated to Ireland at an early age to complete his studies and now calls it home along with his young family. He is a poet, playwright, and spoken word artist whose words have wowed audiences from bar basements to electric picnic stages. He started performing in Dublin in 2016 in open mics and poetry slams, which saw him win the Slam Sunday grand slam and become an All Ireland poetry slam finalist. Since then he has performed for festivals like Electric Picnic, St. Patricks, Dublin Fringe, Drogheda literary festival, Cuirt International Poetry Festival, and First fortnight. He is one-third of the collective WeAreGriot - a poetry collective that curates art events around poetry. His personal works include, The Home Project (a series of poetry films), RedBeard Paddy (a poetry short film), Mmanwu (a play in the 2023 Dublin Fringe Festival), See True (a spoken word variety show) and Boy Child (a spoken-word play), the last two co-written with FeliSpeaks, Talkatives; a hip-hop and poetry slam as part of WeAreGriot. As you'll learn in our conversation and glean from his works, his poetry is inspired by his hometown in Lagos, Nigeria, and his experience since moving to Ireland. EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE 2023 SERIES Elaine chats with playwright Ciara Elizabeth Smyth about her new show Lie Low which is on at the Traverse Theatre 3rd-27th August 2023 & Abbey Theatre 17th -29th July 2023. We discuss the play, changing focus from preforming to writing, the importance of Government support for the arts and much more. Tickets for Traverse Theatre https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/lie-low-festival-23 Abbey Theatre Tickets https://booking.abbeytheatre.ie/events/16365?hidedate TRIGGER WARNING: brief mentions of bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace. LIE LOW Faye's Afraid. She's not sleeping, she doesn't trust ducks and all she's had to eat this week is a box of dry Rice Crispies. Award-winning new writing, Lie Low makes its Scottish debut as part of the Traverse Festival 2023. Written by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth and directed by Oisín Kearney, Lie Low is a surreal comedy that offers a theatrical exploration into the human brain via the genitals. After a break-in at her home, Faye is working through trauma, but it's not moving fast enough. A doctor recommends a form of exposure therapy, so she asks her semi-estranged brother Naoise to help. But Naoise has problems and secrets of his own, and soon the power dynamics are shifting about like mercury on a fork. Lie Low is a darkly funny play that looks at how trauma manifests in the body, filled with bizarre humour, striking visuals and brave, whip smart writing and performed by Charlotte McCurry and Michael Patrick. Lie Low is supported by the MAC and Lyric Theatre Belfast. Originally developed with the support of FRINGE LAB, Fishamble, The Mill Theatre and An Táin Arts Centre. Ciara Elizabeth Smyth Ciara Elizabeth Smyth is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter from Dublin. Her plays have been presented by the Abbey Theatre, Fishamble, Dublin Fringe, the MAC and Project Arts Centre. This week joining Andy in the Be Grand school yard is the poet, activist and founder of Fried Plantains Collective,  Osaro Yemi Azamosa. Osaro spent the first 12 years of her life in Nigeria, the country of her birth and where she found a life of happiness and joy and tells Andy all about what an average day was like just doing the normal kid stuff of going to school and messing afterwards. Osaro’s life would change however when her family moved to Ireland and extremely difficult years throughout her teens followed. Osaro speaks about how abuse, time in direct provision and a crippling anxiety effected her. However it was these dark times as well as her realisation of her sexuality and queerness and thus finding the organisation Belong To that have fueled her work as a spoken word poet and allowed to her find happiness.  Osaro is also the founder of the Fried Plantains Collective - a group seeking to showcase music of African origin being produced in Ireland and dedicated to enhancing the visibility of LGBTQIA+ people of colour.  She made her Dublin Fringe debut last year in The Mouth Of A Shark - a theatre production that examines the stories of people who migrated or sought asylum in Ireland and those who left the country for political reasons. This is a very special episode of Be Grand and we're delighted that Yemi graced us with her time, shared with us her extraordinary story and even performed a piece of her work.  If you like what you heard, remember to review the podcast on iTunes and other outlets and stay tuned for our upcoming Christmas special. https://twitter.com/begrandpod https://twitter.com/gottheshift

You guys. I am so excited to share this episode with you. I sit down with two creative powerhouses Kristen Maloney and Peter Wood. Kristen is a producer, writer, director and casserole lover. Peter is an actor, writer, and dramaturg, and can turn anything into brilliant choreography. To make sure that you don’t miss an ounce of the goodness that Peter and Kristen give, I have created a TRANSCRIPT which you can find in our Facebook Group and on the TNC website as of 5/9/19. Oh yes, I paid trint some money and now you can literally copy and paste a list together of all the documentation you will need to apply for a hub, the things that the Nutella crew have learned about marketing a fringe show, and so much more! This is part one of two, so stay tuned for even more invaluable information about how to make your fringe show happen.Boys Taste Better With Nutella will be at Melbourne Fringe Festival 13 to 21 September and tickets are $29 OR LESS. It is a brilliant show, I have seen it in varying stages and loved it at all of them. And yes, yes I absolutely will be booking a plane ticket to see it tour in 2020. That is how good this show is. I am booking a $200 plane ticket to see a $29 show and sip $18 cocktails. Living my best life and all that.Tell us what you think of the episode! Show the Nutella crew some love by heading to their instagram account and sharing a post, you will never believe how much those three taps help get them seen online.Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Fringe vs Curated is something we discussed briefly on mic, but which I have thought about a LOT since. Here are two cool articles on the topic that I enjoyed. This is one from Artshub, and Australian arts publication that is a must for creatives in this country (CHECK THEM OUT THEY HAVE REALLY USEFUL STUFF). The articles focuses on Melbourne Fringe, which where our Nutella crew are headed!https://www.artshub.com.au/festival/news-article/opinions-and-analysis/festivals/simon-abrahams/why-fringe-festivals-are-the-centre-point-of-our-culture-255724This one is a really insightful article from the of Dublin Fringe Festival which goes into the politics of fringe festivals more, partly because that is the Dublin Fringe festival’s MOhttps://www.irishtimes.com/culture/the-answer-is-more-dublin-fringe-director-on-choosing-acts-and-supporting-artists-1.3983826.....Peter mentioned he hadn’t had a break since May; we recorded this episode back in July, so while that is still a long time, it’s 2ish months not 3. But still definitely send him some nice messages on Insta.....Moreblessingma, AKA Moreblessing Maturure, is an activist, actor, writer, speaker, and has a goddamn TEDtalk (which 100% distracted me from editing this episode TWICE). "On 14 April 1984 a woman’s identity was shattered to pieces. 33 years later we are still trying to piece it back together." More than thirty years ago two tragedies set off a chain of events leading to the Kerry babies case, gripping national attention and putting the spotlight on the place of women in Irish society, sexual mores and the conduct of An Garda Síochána. Longford theatre-maker Luke Casserly is the director of a show which will be part of the Dublin Fringe festival this month called Efficacy 84. It aims to ask questions about the limitations of art and how we can, as a society, begin to engage with an event, and an Ireland, that seems so far away from us today, in the context of the Kerry babies story.   Louise Bruton is a freelance journalist and writer who will take to the stage at this year's Dublin Fringe Festival and ask the question, "Why won't you have sex with me?"   Louise has enjoyed great success as a journalist and has featured on the TED X series. Her website, Legless in Dublin, has been well received and provided a an outlet to highlight Dublin's (lack of) accessibility.   We talk to Louise about her upcoming Dublin Fringe debut, patronising people, frustrations at public buildings that do not allow for access for all and of course, Britney Spears.   Don't forget you can now get double the dosage of WTSpod - our new bonus podcast "The 600" is free to download and if you subscribe on iTunes you'll never miss an episode.
