Ginni Callahan's Baja introduction started with a simple, straightforward invitation that most would dismiss as crazy: "Why don't you get a kayak, learn to paddle it, drive me to Baja, and tag along for the season?" The invitation from Kayak guide Hans Bruning changed Callahan's life forever. In 2008, she paddled to the Pacific Baja islands of Cedros and Natividad. In 2009, she soloed to Santa Catalina, the most remote island in the Loreto National Marine Park, renowned for its endemic rattleless rattlesnakes. In 2105, she circumnavigated Angel de la Guarda Island in the remote northern Gulf of California. In 2020, Callahan paddled solo across the Gulf of California, completing the final 55 nautical miles from Isla Tortugas to the Sonora coast in 18 hours.When not guiding sea kayaking trips, Callahan is writing a guidebook on the National Marine Park of Loreto. She is a breast cancer survivor who wants to give hope to others undergoing that journey.

A glimpse into a more just future. Los Cedros and the revolutionary idea of Rights of Nature

Radio Utopistan

The Los Cedros case is evidence that a more just future is possible. It is a constructive story in times when we almost only get dystopian news about the world we live in. It is a story humans need to not lose hope in democracy and civil engagement. It shows us how powerful and transforming civil society can be. How human rights and nature rights are interconnected and how justice can be implemented. The cloud forest of Los Cedros in Ecuador was the first case in which a court clearly and irretrievable recognized the Rights of Nature. It ruled in favor of the forest and against an open pit copper mine and against its own government. This was only possible because a strong social movement fought for it. The Rights of Nature movement and within it the Los Cedros case are the beginning of a revolution. They have the power to change everything. It means to respect nature as a subject, as a being, as a partner and not as an object, a commodity or a servant we can exploit and use as we like. It is a world view. If we live by it it would change how we organize our economy, our food supply, our transportation system, our housing, everything. In this episode we visit the cloud forest and talk to biologist Elisa Levy-Ortiz who is a research coordinator in the Los Cedros nature reserve and was part of the group that started the legal case and the social movement around Los Cedros. You'll learn: What is the magic behind the Rights of Nature concept, why is it relevant? How could Rights of Nature dissolve the systems colonialism and patriarchy brought us What made the social movement around the Los Cedros case so successful What does it need to implement justice and win a landmark court case What is the connection between Rights of Nature and Human Rights What is the connection between nature and justice More information and connection: Website of Los Cedros https://reservaloscedros.org/ OMASNE, Alianza de Organizaciones por los Derechos Humanos y de la Naturaleza del Ecuador https://www.instagram.com/omasne_ecuador/ CEDEMNA https://www.instagram.com/cedenma.ec/ GARN, Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature https://www.instagram.com/garnglobal/

Caleb, Phil, and I got together to talk about our experiences in the band, working with Daryl Rabidoux to make this album, and some of the memorable shows we played during our time as a band. Interlude song order: "Roche Limit" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) "Lost Sleep" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) "Remedy" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) If you dig some of the songs clips you hear please consider picking up the record at livingroomutb.bandcamp.com. Thanks!    // Interview recorded October 28th, 2021 via Zoom // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey // /// If you enjoy the episode please leave a rating or review wherever you're listening right now! ///

How Milton's Deli in Del Mar Went from a Neighborhood Staple to a National Brand

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! This week's special guest is Barry Robbins, founder of Milton's Delicatessen Restaurant in Del Mar. The New York–style deli is famous for its Reuben, matzo ball soup, homemade desserts, and breads; and it's celebrating its 27th anniversary this year. You've most likely seen Milton's multigrain bread and line of crackers in retailers like Costco: This national brand of baked goods was also launched by the deli. The company has a storied history, and we enjoyed learning about its origins and growth. Barry's a Windy City native, and when he first moved here in the '70s, he and his brother couldn't find any deep dish pizza, so they started Chicago Brothers Pizza. They experimented with making frozen pizzas in the restaurant, and eventually distributed them nationally. Their pizza was one of the first frozen items sold at Costco (then called Price Club), and as many as 20 bakeries around the country were producing them—legendary Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda was even the company spokesperson! Barry sold Chicago Brothers Pizza and opened Milton's in Del Mar in 1995, which he still operates today. When the restaurant was under construction, he teamed up with chef Claire Allison (who would go on to open Claire's on Cedros in Solana Beach) to develop an in-house bread for the sandwiches. That became the famous multigrain bread that's sold in stores, and they expanded with a line of crackers (the bread and crackers were acquired by another company a few years ago). Reflecting on 2020, Barry said it's been difficult, but the deli has pulled through thanks to community support. And although he's managed companies of over 500 employees, the past year has been “back to basics” because he's the sole owner of the business—that includes washing dishes and doing whatever is needed to keep the doors open. The fridge in the front of the deli contains new products they're testing out—right now they have a turkey pot pie and a banana pudding. Troy's pro tip is to check this fridge out when you visit, because—like Milton's pita chips and gluten-free crackers—they could be the next big thing! In Hot Plates, Juniper and Ivy has hired a new chef from New York's Eleven Madison Park. El Camino in Little Italy is being turned into a new concept, and Rollin Roots and Doggos Gus (both former podcast guests) received grants from the California Restaurant Association. In Two People, $50, Barry said he enjoys the cashew chicken from Double Happiness in Del Mar. Troy's pick this week is O'Brien's Pub on Convoy, one of the first craft beer bars in San Diego, and their Birthday Bacon. David had brunch at Morning Glory in Little Italy and recommends the Japanese soufflé pancakes and lobster omelet with caviar (fancy!). Marie's pick this week is from her recent visit to Santa Barbara: the patatas bravas and paella at Loquita. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Need a restaurant recommendation? Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? Let us know! You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you're too shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com. See you next week!

--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dante-gebel/support

“O justo[…]crescerá como o cedro do Líbano.” Salmo 92:12 Anos atrás, quando fui diagnosticado com câncer, eu vi a cortina da vida se fechando diante de mim. Não questionei Deus, mas lhe disse que não estava entendendo tudo aquilo. Na Bíblia há um relato sobre uma aliança entre o Salomão e Hirão, rei de Tiro, em que este forneceu a madeira de cedro, conhecido como a árvore de Deus, para a construção do Templo. Para que revestissem o Santo dos santos e as colunas do Templo, essas árvores imensas sucumbiam ao golpe do machado, seus troncos rolavam montanha abaixo, golpeados por rochas e outras árvores, se desfigurando em sua superfície até chegar ao mar. Dali eram levados em jangadas pelos mares e, por fim, arrastados montanhas acima até Jerusalém. Os marceneiros, então, iniciavam o entalhe da madeira, e o rude tronco era transformado em perfeitas tábuas. Ao ser polido, talhado aqui e ali, o cedro perdia parte do seu volume. Isso era necessário para que fosse usado na presença plena de Deus. Da mesma forma, estamos sendo talhados para que possamos perceber a presença de Deus em nossa vida. Olhe para todo o sofrimento do cedro antes que este cumprisse o seu propósito. Concentre a sua mente no plano de Deus e diga: “Senhor, age em minha vida como os cedros do Líbano. Em meio a tudo o que tenho vivido, me apego na promessa de que tens um propósito para mim, e creio que isso é verdade absoluta em minha vida.” Jesus diz: “…O que eu faço não o sabes agora;
compreendê-lo-ás depois”. João 13:7

We’re taping this week’s episode from our sponsor's location, Bayside Kitchen + Bar at the Hilton Garden Inn in Little Italy, which offers SoCal-inspired comfort foods, craft cocktails, and a vibrant mid-century setting. This week, we have a very special guest, celebrity chef Michael Mina. Michael was recently in town to open the first San Diego location of International Smoke, his barbecue concept with cookbook author and TV host Ayesha Curry, which Troy got the First Look at. Michael grew up in Eastern Washington state, and after high school he moved to Seattle to attend college and started working at the restaurant located inside the Space Needle. This kicked off his love of food, and he switched gears and moved to New York City to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Michael went to own to open his namesake restaurants in San Francisco and Las Vegas, which each have a Michelin star. Today, through his company the Mina Group, he owns over 40 restaurants around the world. We chatted with Michael about the International Smoke concept and how it was inspired by cooking traditions found around the world, and the art of smoking meats and live-fire cooking. We also learned that Carl Schroeder, the executive chef at Market in Del Mar, used to work for Michael back in the day, and talked about how much the industry has changed over the years. Michael’s San Diego pick for Two People, $50, was Chiko, and the staff liked Claire’s on Cedros and Puesto. In Hot Plates, we learned about Green Oceanside Kitchen, the city of Oceanside’s new food recovery and preservation facility; La Doña, the new Mexican restaurant in Ocean Beach that’s going to replace the former Nati’s; and The Holding Company, a three-story drinking and live music venue in Ocean Beach from the owners of OB Noodle House. We also talked about Artisan Noodle Tatsuki, a new ramen shop downtown helmed by an alum of LA’s famed Tsujita (which has a one-hour wait). We want to note that there has been a delay in the restaurant’s opening date: It’s now estimated to be August 31. David’s 60 Second Beer Review this week is our special beer collaboration with Fall Brewing, the Best of San Diego Watermelon Sour. This week’s Hot Topic is whether the golden age for restaurants is over. Troy has written about this, and the Washington Post recently noted that fast-casual places have taken over and the future looks bleak for traditional sit-down establishments. The Best of San Diego Party is this Friday! Taste samples from more than 80 restaurants at the most delicious evening of the year. It’s on August 16 at Liberty Station, and it’s your last chance to get tickets! Insiders get a special discount on tickets and front of the line entry.

Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast As I was reminded of in a recent conversation with Emma Huvos, we protect what we love. As the ethics of permaculture call for us to care for Earth and people, then practicing permaculture can be a political act requiring activism. In this conversation facilitated by guest host David Bilbrey, John Seed shares his work of nearly 40 years to preserve landscapes all over the world, beginning first in New South Wales, Australia to save rainforests. He and others in those early days created the many direct actions now used by activists and protestors all around the world including tree sitting or chaining oneself to industrial equipment. From there he moves to his current work with the Rainforest Information Centre and the Los Cedros Reserve to save the rainforests of Ecuador. Find out more about Los Cedros at https://reservaloscedros.org/, and the Rainforest Information Center at rainforestinformationcentre.org. Given all the names and organizations John mentioned you'll find a number of additional links in the resource section below, including to the Save Los Cedros petition so you can get involved. -- I posted a question on the Facebook page for the show back in early November asking “Should permaculturists get involved in politics?” And received a number of responses that ranged from, “Politics and permaculture = incompatible” to “Absolutely. Everyone should get involved in politics. If we leave it only to those who are attracted to it, we get exactly the current situation.” My own personal perspective and why I was interested in David's interview with John rests closer to that second answer: we should all be involved in politics and action. As a permaculture practitioner, my focus continues to be on the philosophical underpinnings of this holistic systems-thinking approach paired with the social, economic, and, yes, political change we can create through intentional design. Though I see the world through this lens of political and social work, I also understand that we should engage in the activities we are called to. We only have so much time in our lives to work on the issues that matter to us. If you have a limited interest in politics but live in a democratic society with elections, vote. If you want to go a step further and help preserve rainforests, get involved with the Rainforest Information Centre. If you feel working on, or in, politics holds the most possibility for you to affect change, become a lawyer, run for office, or work to enact policy changes at your municipal, state, province, national, or the international level. One one of the things I love most about permaculture is the breadth of possibilities available to us. Use your knowledge and ability to create the world you want to live in. While you're doing that, know that there are tens of thousands of others doing the same thing, in their own way, alongside you. -- If there is any way I can help connect you to the resources you need, answer your question, or help you get involved, email, call or write. From here, the next episode is an interview with Maddy Harland, the editor of Permaculture Magazine, to discuss her new book Fertile Edges, and look at her more than 25 years in the center of the permaculture community. Ahoy maties! How could we possibly do Halloween season right without including a film from the Master Of Horror himself? And speaking of masters, I can’t believe how long it has taken the TNCC to review one of Steve Saka’s new cigar releases of 2016. Well much like peanut butter and chocolate and other brilliant combinations made throughout history, tonight we mesh a great film with a fantastic stogie and the results will dazzle you. That’s right, DAZZLE. You got a problem with the word dazzle? Yeah, I didn’t think so… THE CIGAR – SOBREMESA ELEGANTE EN CEDROS by DUNBARTON TOBACCO & TRUST             As you loyal listeners to the show will surely remember, last […] The post Episode 39 – The Fog (1980) / Sobremesa Elegante en Cedros cigar / Sea To Sea lager appeared first on Tuesday Night Cigar Club.

Regular guest host, Craig Schneider, joins Bob and Dale this week. Bob interviews Bryan White from 13th Floor cigars. The guys offer differing opinions about the Cigar of the Week, the 13th Floor Foundation Series Robusto. Also this week, Dan Welsh, owner of New Havana Cigars is the guest on"What's Hot, What's Not, What's Next." Cigar of the Week - 13th Floor Foundation Series Robusto 13th Floor is a very new cigar from Bryan White. The cigar features a flavorful Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and filler from Nicaragua. Bryan worked with Willie Herrera at El Titan de Bronze to develop this cigar. The Foundation Series comes in three sizes: Robusto (5X50), Toro (6x52) and Churchill (7x50). You can follow Bryan on Twitter as smokinonthe13th and the web site is http://www.13thfloorcigars.com/. Dark Side - CUABA DIVINOS Rob from Friends of Habanos has this to say about the Cuaba Divinos: With older siblings like Traditional and Generoso plus parents like Diadema and Salomones....you may think that the baby Divino will carry on the anemic flavour bloodline. Not so. I sit here before you smoking a March 07 Divino and it is a wild child of the highest order. What a mongrel it is. Full of pepper spice and deep rich tobacco. Full bodied powerhouse whose only intention is to smack you in the mouth. How embarassed of its famiy it must be....no doubt it will be seeking a court hearing to disassociate itself from the bland siblings and Brady Bunch parents. Outside of some opening bitter chocolate I got nothing out of this Divino except tobacco, pepper and pain....I am thrilled. Way too young to evaluate but it will be a cracker of a cigar with some time to age. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado Robusto, 5.25" x 54 - Packaged in cedar sleeves with a total of 3 bands, this cigar screams up from the shelves "buy me!". The cigars are rested in cedar for 4-6 months while aging, thus the Reposado en Cedros moniker. Medium bodied with an intense cedar aroma and flavor, the cigar is quite pleasant for the first 2/3. Not many other flavors can rise up above that strong cedar woodiness. Room 101 - A more reasonably sized Toro than the monster I had a couple weeks ago. Still strong, but this time with flavor and no harshness. I really enjoyed this one. Liga Privada Flying Pig - the cigar I ended up smoking as my quiet time/birthday cigar. What else have you been smokin' Craig? Tatuaje SW Reserva Maduro - Absolutely excellent experience. Possibly the best Tat I've ever had. Tatuaje Boris - A good cigar with nice 'baking spice' flavors. This has matured and started changing in the year since its release. Not as full flavored as it once was but it is shaping up to be a cigar that performs well with its age. Diamond Crown Maximus Robusto - Lovely honey core with decent strength and terrific flavor. Worth trying. Worth trying AGAIN. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Herencia Black Label, Red Label, Yellow Label, White Label - Manufactured in Ybor City by a father / son team. (See our interview with Abraham and Roberto on smugmug.) Excellent construction, the cigars range in strength from mild to full but all exhibit soft shoulders from being well blended and aged. Smoke is smooth and flavorful across the line. Also available on-line and Tabacalera Ramirez is now opening a factory in Nicaragua while working to begin distribution across the country. If you are in the Tampa area, stop and say hello and get a deal on some fine cigars. Joya de Nicaragua Classico - Joya de Nicaragua was once an extremely popular cigar here in the US. Then came the Sandinistas and an embargo to suddenly shut off their largest market and their factory. But the people behind JdN were stubborn and they fought to reopen the factory with new ownership and developed new markets around the world to wait out the political whims of their own and our governments. When JdN returned to the US they found their old distribution channels gone and a new generation of smokers that did not recognize the brand. Undeterred, the factory family (jobs are obtained through family members and personal recommendations) drove on creating the Antanos, the multi-wrapper Celebration, and in 2000 a reblend of their flagship, the Classico. Available in five sizes, Churchill, Toro, Lonsdale, Torpedo and my selection the Robusto. This is a mild-medium flavored cigar with a Nicaraguan grown Criollo wrapper. JdN is a finely crafted cigar (some of the rollers have been there for 50 years) that is skillfully aged with great attention to detail and finish. This cigar has been made in the same factory since its introduction in 1963 and by a proud ensemble of workers that fought for the survival of the brand. This pride is evident in every cigar bearing the name. Great aged tobacco flavors with slight leather and nuts. Excellent smoke. Illusione Cuchillos Cubanos - Thanks to Joe Fuller of Fuller's Pullers for sending these out. A mixed filler cigar with nice flavors and a respectable price. Easy recommendation as a value cigar at just over $3 each in five packs. What's My Band? - #927 from Bruce Berg; Punch London Club September Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Kris Allen from Mineral Wells, Tx won the classic black Palio Cutter. Enter the October contest now to win a gold Palio Cutter. Do you have a Herf Line Review? If you call and leave a cigar review on the herf line and it is played on the show, you will receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio patch! You can reach the Herfline at 321-594-4373 - or cigar.radio on Skype. You can also send email to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. Origin of the term HERF: From Cigar Craig, http://cigarcraig.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/the-origin-of-the-word-herf/ Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv. Thanks to Michael Howe for bumpers and special effects in this show. Music provided by the Figurados from their new album, "Lesson Two," and The Surfonics.
