¡Vamos a explorarlo!

This week, we turn away from the media for a moment, to a realm thousands of feet beneath the ocean's surface – where sperm whales swim. These behemoths spend most of their lives in complete darkness, surfacing only for a few minutes at a time. They have the largest brains of virtually any other creature on earth, and they grow to be the size of one school bus, even two – and weigh as much as ten of them. But despite leading wildly different lives, scientists say they may communicate with each other – much like we do. In May, scientists at CETI, or Cetacean Translation Initiative, published a study claiming that they use a complex phonetic alphabet that echoes the structures of human languages. This week, host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Shane Gero, a biologist focusing on the acoustic complexity and social behavior of whales and Biology Lead at CETI, about this phonetic alphabet, and how it might be the first of many steps that could lead to translating what these sea giants are saying – and saving their lives.  On the Media is supported by listeners like you. I am Lana Stevenson, the owner of Resilience Shift, and a Cancer Exercise Specialist. Resilience Shift focuses on using movement and nutrition for chronic disease prevention to achieve longevity. We create safe and effective exercise programming to help people live longer with a better quality of life.   I am passionate about creating personalized exercise programs for cancer patients and survivors. I create custom programs pertaining to each individual's specific condition, focusing on the importance of the mind/body connection. I have been a competitive athlete most of my life. From achieving a Black belt in Shotokan Karate, to running 20+ Marathons and numerous other distance races at a high level, I branched into Personal Training and coaching as a career for the past 30 years and have run my own Personal Training studio for 30 years. I truly love what I do with a passion. My younger daughter has been fighting stage 4 colon cancer for the past 9 years. She has endured 6 lung metastases resulting in 5 lung surgeries plus 1 series of radiation and ablation, 2 ovary metastases resulting in both ovaries being removed, numerous inoperable tumors in her pelvic area and 4 rounds of chemotherapy lasting 3 to 6 months each. Not to mention the Opioid addiction resulting from long term use.   As a single mom and sole provider, I have had to move through this exceedingly difficult journey and figure out each new step alone, while keeping my personal training business going. As you can imagine, this has been no easy feat, especially when I have felt emotionally depleted, still always keeping my daughter the number one priority.Historically, cancer patients were told to rest as much as possible and to save their energy especially while going through treatment. Exercise did not seem like a possibility. However, science is now showing the opposite. Movement is extremely beneficial even while going through treatment, even the smallest amount. One just needs to know how to exercise safely!Since my daughter's diagnosis, I made it my mission to study exercise for the different types of cancers, treatments, surgeries, etc. So, I become certified as a Cancer Exercise Specialist through CETI (Cancer Exercise Training Institute).I now create personalized programs for cancer survivors so that they can safely gain the benefit of exercise, physically, mentally and emotionally, and regain some sense of normalcy and independence.   https://www.resilienceshifthealth.comBook:  Moving through CancerSupport the show

This episode is part of the 30 day challenge I did in Oct 2022.  I am a certified CETI Instructor thanks to Andrea's work with  cancer patients and her own history with  it also. Established by Andrea Leonard (a 38 year cancer survivor) in 2004; in response to a growing need to provide scientifically-based, current information on exercise therapy as a critical component of cancer recovery. Our goal is simple; To Educate Health and Fitness Professionals to Empower Cancer Survivors. We provide health and fitness professionals with comprehensive coursework on twenty-five types of cancer, as well as pediatrics, their surgeries and treatments, breast reconstruction, upper and lower body lymphedema prevention, identification, and managemnent, cancer pain and fatigue, comprehensive fitness evaluations including postural assessment and goniometry, as well as marketing strategies and how to position themselves as the "next step" in the health care continuum. Cancer Exercise Specialists are to cancer what cardiac rehab is to the heart patient. We also provide products and educational materials for health care professionals as well as cancer patients.Following her mothers second diagnosis with breast cancer, Andrea spent three years working on her book "Essential Exercises for Breast Cancer Survivors," with the help of the chiefs of breast surgery at Johns Hopkins, GW, and Georgetown University Medical Centers. The book was published in 2000 by Harvard Common Press. She then started an OR 501 C-3 non-profit called the Breast Cancer Survivors Foundation and began teaching workshops nationwide on exercise and breast cancer. Andrea continued to see her family members be affected by cancer, including her father who was diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer and passed away in 2014. To address the concerns of all cancer patients, Andrea established the Cancer Exercise Training Institute in 2004. She has trained thousands of health and fitness professionals worldwide. The Cancer Exercise Specialist and Breast Cancer Recovery BOSU(R) Specialist Advanced Qualifications are considered the gold standard in exercise programming for cancer patients.Support the show

GD 99: Re-investigation of an old ZZ Ceti companion by Zs. Bognár et al. on Wednesday 30 November Context. Thanks to photometric space missions, we have access to more and more information on the properties of white dwarf stars, especially pulsating ones. In the case of pulsators, we have the opportunity to get an insight into their otherwise hidden interiors by the means of asteroseismology. In addition to space-based observations, we also take advantage of the opportunity to study the pulsations of white dwarf stars from the ground, either as observations that are complementary to space-based measurements or individual observing runs on selected targets across long timescales. Aims. We aim to investigate long-term, single-site observations of the bright, yet scarcely studied ZZ Ceti star, GD 99. Our main goals are to determine as many eigenmodes for asteroseismology as possible and then to carry out a seismic analysis of this target. Methods. We performed a Fourier analysis of the light curves obtained in different epochs. After finding the normal modes of the pulsation, we ran the 2018 version of the White Dwarf Evolution Code to build model grids for the period fits. We compared the seismic distance of the best-fit model with the geometric value provided by Gaia measurements. Results. We find that GD 99 is rich in pulsation modes in the 200-1100 s period range, as we detected seven new periods. Together with the literature data, we were able to use 11 modes for the asteroseismic fits. We accepted an asteroseismic model solution with Teff = 13 500 K and M* = 0.80 Msun as a best fit, however, this suggests a hotter and more massive star than we might have expected based on the spectroscopic values. We also estimated the rotational rate of the star to be 13.17 h, based on TESS observations. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.11676v2

Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast

In episode 2 of Totally Tell Me Everything -- a monthly podcast hosted by podcasters and friends, Sarah Woloski and Bryn MacKinnon -- we tackle the topic of Space! As always, we've got three questions to ask and answer about this episode's topic, so let's get to it, shall we?   Question 1: What is it about space and how did your interest in space begin?   Bryn kicks off the conversation (and reveals just how old she really is) with the Space Shuttle program and then quickly diverts us to a downer story about the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster in 1986. Small redemption in the story about seeing the final space shuttle, Endeavor, on its trip to the California Science Center. Sarah saves the day by sharing the very relatable story of building a remarkably accurate model of the solar system in 3rd grade with her engineer father, Peter Heitman, which sparked her interest in the vastness we call space. We talk at length about the excellent space/science/romance movie, “Contact,” starring Jodi Foster and Matthew McConaughey. And let's not forget Sarah and her mother's shared love of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Related links and rabbit holes: Influence of TV shows, films and books about space: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Star Wars, Apollo 13, Stephen Hawking's “A Brief History of Time,” Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, The Right Stuff, more The Right Stuff The Very Large Array Art and science come together in the music of space: Alan Silvestri, composer of the soundtracks for Contact and Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Pine Cones vs Pine Nuts   Question 2: What do we want to learn about space?   Interestingly, we both did research on and want to talk about life beyond our planet, but from slightly different angles.   Sarah takes deep into the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, particularly the SETI Institute, the non-profit in Silicon Valley that listens to and analyzes the sounds we can hear from space, with the hope of finding intelligent life out there. SETI was founded 1984, by Tom Pierson and astronomer Jill Tarter, and played a large role in “Contact,” which Sarah assigned Bryn to watch as podcast homework before we recorded this episode. Space exploration, whether up there in rockets, shuttles and space stations or from down here on our home planet, captures and expands our imaginations. It is ambitious, dangerous, difficult and risky. But as Ellie Arroway's father says in the movie “Contact” when she asks him if he thinks there's people on other planets: “I don't know, Sparks.
