This week on Black & Published, Nikesha speaks with New York Times Bestselling author Tomi Adeyemi, author of The Children of Anguish and Anarchy, the final installment in the Legacy of Orisha series. As a Nigerian American who came of age in a mostly white community, Tomi says her writing grew out of reckoning with her own internalized self-hatred. In our conversation, she explains how writing herself seen is an act of rebellion and revenge to Hunger Games haters. Plus, how she's helped shift the publishing landscape around Science Fiction and Fantasy in the six years since her debut. And, how the overwhelming sense of her own mortality has fueled her creativity.Support the Show.Follow the Show: IG: @blkandpublished Twitter: @BLKandPublished Follow Me:IG: @nikesha_elise Twitter: @Nikesha_Elise Website: www.newwrites.com

Welcome back, coven! In this episode we are discussing A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown, the sequel to A Song of Wraths and Ruin which we talked about all the way back in episode 39! This book picks up right were the last one left off with Karina on the run and Malik living in the palace with Hanan who was brought back from the dead, and Fareed basically in control of everything. Chaos does indeed ensue! Content warning for discussions of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and miscarriage. Take care of yourself folks, and if you don't feel up to listening to this episode at the moment, feel free to come back to it later or skip this one. We'll talk about it in the “Kill Your Darlings” segment towards the end and provide a warning there, too [37:11-39:48]. The Trevor Project hotline suicide prevention hotline This season of the show is quickly wrapping up! Only If you want a say in what books we read and talk about next season and you want to be in communication with a great group of people who talk about books, baking, and yarn, consider joining our patreon! Recommend if you like… [read-alikes mostly, but also other media, film, tv, etc.] A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron Hyena is a trickster like Coyote (Trail of Lightning) or Loki (Norse mythology). This is a common type of god in many different belief systems. Here are a couple of different resources, since it's really cool to see how they overlap! [cw: miscarriage] There is mention at the beginning of the book that Hanan and Karina's mother had been through a few miscarriages, and this is a YA book, but I think it's important for people to know that 10-20% of pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and because we don't talk about that, many people who experience them feel like it's their fault. So I appreciated this mention in a book for young people who may have had loved ones who experienced a miscarriage or they may have experienced them themselves, so it's important to have these kinds of discussions. [cw: suicide and self harm] We see Malik using self harm as a way to control his mind, and the god living there, and thinking about killing himself. This is another thing that I think can be an important topic to talk about with young people. I hope people know there are people who are there for you and want to help you, and if you need help, please reach out. We'll link to the suicide prevention hotline and the trevor project in case you feel like you need someone to reach out to. As always, we'd love to be in discussion with you, magical people. People all over the world have watched in horror as Russia continues to invade Ukraine. But the war isn't just being fought on the ground. It's also being waged across social media. For the past few weeks, our timelines have been flooded with memes about the conflict. But as we're processing what some say could be the next World War III, the backlash to what's being posted on all sides has been swift. And there's been backlash to the backlash. So it has many questioning: is it OK that we're memeing our way through war? Today, we take a look at how memes have been used throughout the conflict and talk to a professor to help us understand how we use memes in times of trauma. Then, on this International Women's Day, we're highlighting some incredible women who are breaking boundaries in their fields — starting with women writers. Find out how comic book writer G. Willow Wilson's work is helping change the Marvel universe, how author Tomi Adeyemi is expanding the fantasy genre within book publishing and how Quinta Brunson is redefining success with her hit TV show “Abbot Elementary.” All month long, we'll be highlighting cool women we think you should know. And to help us bring you the stories you want to hear throughout the year, fill out this quick listener survey. You'll hear from: Jessica Myrick, professor of communications at Penn State University Want more Skimm? When I spoke to @anitakopacz about her new novel, I had only read a few pages, but I knew Shallow Waters would be a book I would love. This book reminds me of books by two of my favorite authors, Tananrive Due and Octavia Butler. It is very similar to Children of Blood and Bone by Nigerian author Tomi Adeyemi. I love how modern day myths are being written about African characters. The Creator, expressing as our African ancestors, are speaking in multiple ways. Our collective consciousness is seeing ourselves as powerful and supported by the mysticism that is the nature of this Universe. We have been taught to ignore it. We have done so at our peril. Shallow Waters, gives us a myth to help us conceive of ourselves differently. Kopacz is Spiritual Psychologist as well as an Artist and healer. Our conversation was so rich that I invited her to come back on the show to discuss the healing work she is doing at her upcoming retreat. Anita talks about the ritual she used to petition Yemaya and how the energy of the ocean responded and much more! Accolades for Shallow Waters, A Novel Spellbinding...A captivating debut.” —Harper's Bazaar In this stirring and lyrical debut novel—perfect for fans of The Water Dancer and the Legacy of Orïsha series—the Yoruba deity of the sea, Yemaya, is brought to vivid life as she discovers the power of Black resilience, love, and feminine strength in antebellum America. Shallow Waters imagines Yemaya, an Orïsha—a deity in the religion of Africa's Yoruba people—cast into mid-1800s America. We meet Yemaya as a young woman, still in the care of her mother and not yet fully aware of the spectacular power she possesses to protect herself and those she holds dear. The journey laid out in Shallow Waters sees Yemaya confront the greatest evils of this era; transcend time and place in search of Obatala, a man who sacrifices his own freedom for the chance at hers; and grow into the powerful woman she was destined to become. We travel alongside Yemaya from her native Africa and on to the “New World,” with vivid pictures of life for those left on the outskirts of power in the nascent Americas. Yemaya realizes the fighter within, travels the Underground Railroad in search of the mysterious stranger Obatala, and crosses paths with icons of our history on the road to freedom. Shallow Waters is a nourishing work of ritual storytelling from promising debut author Anita Kopacz. Anita Kopacz is an award-winning writer and spiritual advisor. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Heart & Soul Magazine and Managing Editor of BeautyCents Magazine. When she is not writing, you can find her on the dance floor or traveling the world with her children. Anita lives in New York City with her family. Host Sanaa Green is Spiritual Royalty, an Indigo Child, descendant of Madagascar and Lemuria, Reiki Practitioner, Ecopyschologist, Community Activist, Environmental Educator, Youth Development Coach, Teacher of Belly Dance for Earth & Soul and Spiritual Thinker. Hello, magical friends! This fortnight we're coming at you with a discussion of Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi, the second book in the Legacy of Orïsha series. If you need a recap of the story or what we talked about in the first book, check out episode 2 (so long ago!!!) about Children of Blood and Bone. First up, let me say there is a bit of a sound issue on my part (J), that I apologize for. I accidentally recorded from my webcam instead of my microphone, but hopefully, I wont let that happen again in the future! Call to action: this week we asked that you take the time to learn more about systems of oppression, and there are lots of ways you can do that. Check out the NPR podcast, Code Switch, purchase and read a book from our anti-racism book list, or check out Rachel Cargle's The Great Unlearn. This isn't an exhaustive list! Please share with us any resources you find in your journey, and we will share those on Instagram and Twitter. We are often sharing resources on social media as well, so check that out, too! We also introduced our Bookshop for the first time in this episode, but to find out more about how Bookshop works, check out their about page to learn more. And now on to the notes!: J & K both listened to this book as an audiobook. The narration is wonderful and definitely worth checking out. Check your local library to see if you can get it there; audiobooks are expensive!! If you're interested, here's more information about the fantasy subgenres Here are two videos about cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation from CBC and Vice Asia Check out this Code Switch episode: “Why Now, White People?“ Here is a great article about colorism – In this episode I (J) talked a bit about my privilege as a light-skinned Black person, and it is really important that all of us recognize what privileges we are bringing with us to any given table. This was a weird thing to talk about in such a public manner, but I think it's also a very important topic. Hit me up on social media or email if you want to talk about it more. Check out the data on the racial breakdown in children's books. It is a sad state of affairs. Check out the episode of Vox's Explained “Billionaires” Article from Buzzfeed “This is What Black Burnout Feels Like“ I (J) took out a whole segment where I said a lot of nice things about Sebastian Stan, who I do not know. You can just imagine it. But it was too embarrassing to keep in lol. But I felt I should be honest with ya'll.
