In this episode, Pastor Karl kicks off a new 10-week sermon series diving into the letters of 1st and 2nd Timothy. Speaking on Mother's Day, he highlights the powerful influence of faithful mothers and grandmothers, drawing from Timothy's own story, shaped by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. Pastor Karl emphasizes the core theme of these letters: what a Jesus community believes—its doctrine—directly shapes how it lives. Exploring 1st Timothy Chapter 1, he unpacks Paul's charge to Timothy, a young leader in Ephesus, to remain steadfast in a challenging environment, teaching sound doctrine and resisting cultural confusion. Pastor Karl outlines six reasons to "remain" in faith: hard places need hard truth, God's people are needed, God uses unworthy people, we serve a great God, the battle for faith is too important to surrender, and some have already fallen away. With passion, he calls the church to stand under Scripture, guard doctrine, and trust in God's grace to live faithfully. What happens when we truly see God for who He is? In this message, we explore the powerful moment of Jesus' transfiguration in Matthew 17 and how it reveals two foundational truths about God's nature: His transcendence and His immanence. God's transcendence reminds us of His majesty and holiness, elevating our reverence for Him. At the same time, His immanence brings us close, showing His intimate involvement in our lives and elevating our relationship with Him. Together, these truths challenge us to stand in awe of God's greatness while living devoted to His personal and unfailing love. How should we respond? By surrendering to His eternal presence, living in awe of His bigness, and being deeply devoted to His love. This life-changing encounter teaches us that our view of God directly shapes our response to Him. Are you ready to see God more clearly and take the next step in your faith? With the start of school just around the corner, academic endeavors are beginning to bubble to the forefront of our minds and schedules. This episode, originally released in April 2023, will inspire your family for this upcoming school year by showing how pursuing excellence in learning and education can and should deepen our (and our children's) faith and bolster our devotion to God. When did a dichotomy become assumed between academic excellence and Christian devotion? Over time, a mindset has developed that seems to tell us that these two traits can't coexist; that striving for one will compromise the other in our lives. The Veritas Dean of Math and Science, Rhonda Forbes, talks with our host Ty Fischer about why she sees these two worthwhile objectives - academic excellence and Christian devotion - in our lives as being complimentary to one another and even, in fact, informing each other. Parents should not feel like they have to choose between the two, or that by striving to cultivate one in their child's heart they will rob the other from flourishing. On the contrary, Rhonda will pull back the curtain to show you how, as a Christian, striving for academic excellence can and should deepen our wonder and love for God...and how a deep love for God can result in a desire for greater learning, knowledge of His ways and creation, and excellence in all we do. Rhonda Forbes, who was an engineer before embarking on her teaching career at Veritas years ago, teaches both upper school math and Great Books (Omnibus) courses deftly. She and her husband Scott have four grown children, all of whom graduated from Veritas Academy.

Although we “were straying like sheep,” the Lord Jesus Christ has willingly suffered and died for us, bearing our sins “in his body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24–25). We are healed by His wounds (1 Peter 2:24), and in His resurrection He gathers us to Himself as our Good Shepherd, by whose righteousness we “have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Now through other shepherds whom He calls and sends in His name, He guards and keeps us in the green pastures of His Church, leading us beside the quiet waters of our Baptism and spreading the feast of His table before us. Since He has called us by the Gospel to be His own dear sheep, we also “hear his voice” and “know his voice” (John 10:3–4) in the faithful preaching of His Gospel, and we follow Him by faith. When we receive His Gospel, we have the abundant life and common unity of the entire flock under one Good Shepherd, in “the apostles' teaching and the fellowship” and in “the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). ----- Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. This is the third episode in our podcast series, walking through the book of Ephesians. In this episode JB Shreve looks at the grace of God as a component of His favor and power that goes beyond salvation to alter our understanding and interactions with reality and truth. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they take a deeper dive into the 2022 Summer Reading List - an annual Church & Culture blog tradition. Every summer, Dr. White shares the top 10 books that he either has read over the past year or that are at the top of his list to read over the summer. This summer's list was a curveball from the norm, based on questions coming in from the staff at Mecklenburg Community Church about recommended reading for their souls. So this year's list covers some of the classics of Christian devotion, of spiritual formation. Episode Links As reading is a passion of Dr. White, he often blogs about books and reading. “Books We Lie About Reading” discusses a BBC survey about the top books people lie to say they have read. In this blog, Dr. White explains the importance of cultivating A Mind for God - the title of a book he wrote that has in the appendix three helpful book lists: 10 books to begin cultivating a mind for God, 25 books for a Christian worldview and a lengthy list of the “great books.” He also wrote a blog titled “Ten Books for Spiritual Growth,” a short entry listing the top 10 books that he recommends for spiritual growth and development. Toward the end of the discussion, Dr. White mentioned how important he feels it is for churches to develop their own bookstores. He blogged about this topic as well in a blog titled, “The Need for Church Bookstores.” For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.
