Hollywood And Horsepower Show with Mark Otto Frank Santorelli: From Boston Comedy Clubs to The Sopranos and Beyond Summary From Class Clown to the Comedy Stage Frank Santorelli describes an early instinct for making people laugh, beginning with childhood impressions and class-clown behavior before his first organized performance as a guard in a school production of The Wizard of Oz. He says his professional stand-up path began around 1981 after he was living in New York City and studying acting with ambitions of becoming a dramatic actor. He moved to Boston in 1985 as the city's comedy scene was booming with clubs, colleges, and one-night engagements. The discussion emphasizes how many nights a week young comics worked and how little money they often made while trying to establish themselves. The Competitive Craft of Stand-Up Comedy Santorelli and Marc Otto discuss the difficult progression from opener to middle act to headliner and the amount of material required to close a show successfully. Santorelli explains that he needed roughly forty-five minutes of strong material before he could become a reliable headliner and that comics at every level were trying to outperform the act ahead of them. They describe Boston as a working comedy market rather than merely a showcase city, which meant comedians had to deliver for paying audiences night after night. Otto brings up the importance of clean, durable material and the amount of writing that goes into apparently effortless stand-up. Breaking Into Acting and Building a Screen Career Santorelli explains that professional acting opportunities began to arrive after managers and agents saw him performing stand-up in New York. Early work included a commercial for the Omni Biltmore in Providence, a television role on Providence, and an early film he remembers as Crooked Lines. He says he continued doing stand-up while acting because television and film jobs paid more but were unpredictable and separated by long gaps. The scheduling could also be difficult because actors might be called to a set before dawn and then wait many hours before their scenes were shot. Santorelli describes balancing the financial reliability of live comedy with the opportunity and higher pay of screen work. The conversation later touches on Meet the Parents, where he says he worked in a scene with Ben Stiller and met Robert De Niro on set. Becoming Georgie on The Sopranos Santorelli recounts auditioning for what was then an unknown project called The Sopranos after being told the production needed a bouncer-type character. He describes reading for casting director Georgianne Walken and performing the repeated "hello" phone bit that became associated with his character, Georgie. Although he was hired as a one-day player, Santorelli says David Chase ordered elaborate tattoos for him and encouraged the physical business and background activity he improvised around the club set. Santorelli built Georgie by constantly cleaning, moving, kibitzing, and adding silent reactions, and he realized the production might bring him back when Chase insisted that the makeup department photograph the tattoos for continuity. He says the one-day job eventually became thirteen episodes without a long-term contract, with the production simply calling him back as needed. He also describes the large cast read-throughs, the hierarchy around the table, the early Radio City Music Hall screening, and the excitement of realizing the new series might become something extraordinary. James Gandolfini, Ensemble Chemistry, and Celebrity Encounters Santorelli remembers James Gandolfini as serious, hardworking, pressured, and personally very different from Tony Soprano. He emphasizes the enormous emotional and dialogue burden Gandolfini carried because so much of the series revolved around his character. Otto and Santorelli discuss how The Sopranos blended crime drama, family conflict, humor, and multiple overlapping story lines in a way that helped make the series compelling. Santorelli says most of the cast did not even know he was also a stand-up comedian, and he recalls Michael Imperioli reacting with surprise when the subject came up. The conversation expands into stories about Robert De Niro, Don Rickles, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Foster Brooks, Joe Piscopo, Tom Selleck, and other performers whose professional habits or comic instincts made an impression. Santorelli and Otto repeatedly return to the idea that performers such as Rickles could improvise fearlessly because they had an unusual command of timing, character, and the room. Still Working, Still Auditioning, and Still Writing Santorelli says he remains active in stand-up comedy and continues to work multiple dates in a week. He explains that his method for developing material is simple but disciplined: recognize what is genuinely funny to him, write it down, remember it, and test or refine it. He and Otto discuss advice from comedians such as Jay Leno and the unforgiving instant feedback of a live audience, where a joke either produces a laugh or it does not. Santorelli also says he continues auditioning for television, mentioning Dexter: Resurrection and Tulsa King as recent opportunities for which he came close to being cast. He does not believe his Sopranos identity prevents him from being considered for new roles because casting is often driven by whether an actor visually and dramatically fits the part in front of them. Show Notes: Is Your Role in the Business Still Working for You? A founder can build a successful business and still end up spending most of the week doing work that drains them. In this episode of The TriMetric Roadmap Podcast, Scott Landis and Jeff Jacob continue the Life Quality series inside the TriMetric system with the first Life Quality factor: Career & Work. This factor looks at whether the founder's role, responsibilities, strengths, values, and desired contribution are still aligned, sustainable, and meaningful. Scott and Jeff explain why many founders drift out of alignment as the business grows. In the beginning, the founder does almost everything because the business needs it. But what was necessary early on can become a trap later. Jeff points out that every business requires some work that simply has to be done. But the deeper question is whether the business is still aligned with the founder's personal why, not just the company's why. That matters because many founders prioritize the business mission while ignoring whether their own role in the business still fits their gifts, energy, and season of life. Scott introduces the idea that energy is a diagnostic. Some work drains the founder. Some work creates clarity, creativity, and momentum. Career & Work is not just about job satisfaction. It is about whether the founder is spending enough time doing the work that produces their highest contribution. The episode also explores the founder's “necessary contribution.” What does the founder uniquely bring to the business? And what tasks, decisions, meetings, or problems are pulling them away from that contribution? Jeff explains that many founders overvalue the wrong parts of themselves. They keep their hands in too many places, micromanage, or struggle to let go because they misunderstand what the business truly needs from them. Scott connects this to role clarity. If the founder's role is undefined, everything defaults back to the founder. Founder freedom requires designing the business intentionally, including the founder's seat, the team's seats, and the responsibilities that should no longer live with the owner. They also discuss how to move work off the founder's plate through delegation, accountability, and apprenticeship. Some work can be eliminated. Some can be delegated immediately. Other responsibilities need to be transferred through a simple process: watch me do it, help me do it, do it while I help, then do it while I supervise. The goal is not for every founder to disappear from the business. The goal is to spend more time doing the work only the founder should do, and less time carrying work the business should no longer require from them. Jim Cummings says Disney is recasting him as Darkwing Duck for the upcoming reboot, and that Launchpad McQuack is getting a new voice actor too. This lands two weeks after Cummings was passed over for Disney Legends at D23, and the Seth Rogen produced revival he recorded a pilot for is moving ahead without him.I have a hard time squaring this one. Cummings has been Darkwing Duck, Winnie the Pooh, the Cheshire Cat, Shredder, and a few hundred other voices that basically built the 90s for a lot of us, and he recorded the pilot that got this whole revival greenlit in the first place. Now he is out of the lead role, Launchpad is being recast, and he did not sound thrilled about any of it. Pair that with the Disney Legends snub at D23 and the fact that he already got recast on the latest Winnie the Pooh in favor of a kid actor, and it starts to feel less like a scheduling problem and more like a guy being quietly pushed to the side. He is still working. He played Pete again in 2026 and he is running an active podcast. He is willing to do it. Don't Give Up—God Is Still Working Jeremiah 30:7 “Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be rescued from it.” What a great promise from the Lord! Our God is so amazing. He acknowledges that it was a time of great distress for Jacob, and yet He says Jacob will be rescued from it. How many of you really need to hear that right now? How many of you could really use this promise from God right now in your lives? I know several people who are suffering. I know they could really use this promise right now. They could use the promise that they will be rescued from the situation they are in. They need to know the pain, hurt, and anger they feel won't last forever. It is important to remember God didn't just make these promises to the people living at the time this was written. He is making this promise to all of us. You can take the promises you find in Scripture and apply them to your own life. God is talking to you just as much as He is talking to the people in the Bible, just as much as He is talking to me, just as much as He is talking to any of us. Yes, you are in a terrible situation right now, and yet you will be rescued from it. Maybe you have recently lost someone close to you. If this has happened to you, I imagine you are feeling a whole range of emotions. I also imagine your emotions can switch at the drop of a hat. One minute you are sad, and you really miss them, and the next minute you are angry they are gone. Sometimes you can be feeling two competing emotions at the same time. For instance, you can be really sad you don't get to see them anymore and yet be happy they get to be with Jesus and celebrate the fact they are whole again and no longer suffering. Whatever you are feeling, let yourself feel it. Sometimes we can make the situation worse because we tell ourselves we “should” be feeling this way or we “shouldn't” be feeling that way. You have a right to feel however you feel. Allow yourself that grace. This pain you are feeling won't last forever. God will rescue you from it. Maybe you are having family issues. Maybe you're worried about your children. You aren't sure what their future looks like. You aren't sure if they are safe. You know they are making bad choices, and yet you can't save them from themselves. This is really hard. Trust me, I have been through this. I have had lots of family issues over the years. I had a marriage that was falling apart. I had kids that were making bad choices, getting in trouble, and it seemed I couldn't help them. I was doing all I could, and nothing was really changing. I continued to pray; this was the one thing that did make a difference. I also didn't give up hope that things would get better. I knew God was working, and yet I didn't know how he was working, and I certainly didn't know when it would be over, when things would finally get better. If you are in this situation right now, don't give up. Keep praying, keep hoping. I know hope can hurt sometimes. Hope hurts because it feels as though we are leaving ourselves open to get hurt if it doesn't happen. Try to still hope anyway. God never leaves us hanging. He will come through; it just won't be in our time; it will be in His. I struggled for over 15 years. I definitely had times when I thought things weren't ever going to get better. I had lots of times when I wondered why it had to take this long. I never got those answers, but I can finally say, after all those years, that I am doing well. Our family is doing well. It still feels strange to say because we struggled for so long. However, I am so very grateful I didn't give up praying and hoping, and I smile every time someone asks how things are now. I used to say, “I'm surviving.” That was the best I could say; now, everything is really good. Praise God!! I went to an event on Friday sponsored by American Needs Fatima. It was where a replica of the Fatima statue comes and visits a house. The custodian brings the statue to the house and then takes time to explain all about Fatima and what happened, what Mary asked us to do, what Mary promised us, and answers any questions we had. During his talk, the custodian of the statue mentioned St. Monica, and I felt as though I was supposed to remind all of you about St. Monica. St. Monica was a very devout Catholic, and her son, Augustine, wanted nothing to do with her faith. She did not approve of his lifestyle, and Augustine moved to Rome one night without telling his mom where he was going. She tried to follow him, and he had already moved on to Milan by the time she got to Rome. She finally found him, and she prayed unceasingly for his conversion. Finally, he did get baptized into the faith, along with his best friend and his son, whom he had with a woman he loved but never married. St. Monica prayed for her son for a very long time. Augustine was 32 when he finally became a Catholic. She prayed and cried for at least 17 years before she saw a change. God will rescue you; don't give up hope! God hears your prayers. Sometimes it seems like God is not working in our lives. It seems like He does not hear our prayers. If you have been praying for something for a while now and it hasn't happened yet, I am sorry. If you have had unanswered prayers for quite some time now, I know how hard it can be and how easy it is to get frustrated. I know how painful it is to watch others get their prayers answered and yet yours seem to go unanswered. I know all of this is hard. I know it can get harder and harder to believe God hears you. I assure you, He does. He has not left you alone; He has not abandoned you. He is working diligently on rescuing you. Remember God's timing isn't our time. What is a year to us could be a blink of an eye to God. Don't stop praying, don't stop hoping, don't give up. God will rescue you just as He rescued Jacob and countless other people before Him. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this podcast today. Lord, we want to believe you hear all of our prayers; please help us. Lord, some people listening have been waiting on some answers to some pretty big prayers; please help them continue to wait without giving up hope and without giving in to despair. Fill them with a renewed sense of hope and encouragement that you are working on the situation and help them truly believe you will answer their prayers. Lord, you are amazing! You are the resurrection and the life; you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. You are our Savior, Lord, and we are so very grateful.
