Kevin and Todd got together to discuss Elder Gary E. Stevenson's talk from the Sunday afternoon session of April 2024 general conference about the interdependency between the two great commandments.
Elder Stevenson speaks about the two great commandments and how they are intertwined and depend on each other. “The increasing contention in the world suggests, however, that we at times fail to see or remember this. Some are so focused on keeping the commandments that they show little tolerance of those they see as less righteous. Some find it difficult to love those who are choosing to live their lives outside of the covenant or even away from any religious participation. Alternatively, there are those who emphasize the importance of loving others without acknowledgment that we are all accountable to God. Some refuse entirely the notion that there is such a thing as absolute truth or right and wrong and believe that the only thing required of us is complete tolerance and acceptance of the choices of others. Either of these imbalances could cause your spiritual bridge to tip or even fall.” How can you work on this balance between loving God and loving your neighbor? One of the most important aspects of covenant relationship is love. That prompted the title of this study––Evidences of God's Love: A study of Section 109. We will pair this scripture study with the messages from conference that will help us to learn important truths from both modern and ancient prophets as we study these covenant verses.
Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke during the Saturday afternoon session of October 2023 general conference. He gave four guiding principles to invite and recognize the promptings of the Spirit. Kevin and Todd discuss his talk and the importance that standing in holy places and with holy people, testifying of truths and hearkening to the Spirit is in our lives.
Elder Stevenson's talk “Promptings of the Spirit” gives great guidelines on how to have the Spirit more in your life. Here's a question to consider as you study: How will you take steps to hear and listen to the promptings of the spirit more in your life? On Sunday, Nov. 12, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the Okinawa Japan Temple, the fourth temple in Japan for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While the first missionaries arrived in Tokyo in the early 1900s, the Church didn't have a presence in Okinawa until the 1940s, when World War II brought American servicemen to the area. During April 2019 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson announced a temple to be built in this historic area. Elder Stevenson has a rich history in Japan, where he served as a young missionary and later returned as a businessman, mission president and area president. He joins this episode of the Church News podcast to talk about his love for Japan's people and culture and the rich blessings a new house of the Lord brings to these temple-loving people. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. "When President Russell M. Nelson invited us to think celestially, it reminded us to look harder, take the long view, and change our perspective. For the next six months, that is our quest. We will consider Perspective, Devotion, and Relationship. Let us all look harder and think celestial. It will lead us to discover the rich blessings Heavenly Father has in store for each of us.”
Christian based affirmations based on Gary E Stevenson's General Conference address Octobere 2023. Especially for all the youth....tomorrow, this week, this year, always, pause as you look at yourself in the mirror aned think to yourself or say aloud: Wow, look at me! I'm amazing! I'm a child of God. He knows me. He loves me. I'm gifted, gifted with the Holy Ghost as my constant companion.
In his talk “Do You Know Why I as a Christian Believe in Christ?” Elder Corbitt bears beautiful testimony of Jesus Christ and the need for the Atonement. Here are some questions to consider as you study: Why do you believe in Jesus Christ? What are you doing to apply the doctrine of Christ in your life? Gary E. Stevenson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the time of this address, will give his message.
Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles shared a message during the April 2023 General Conference. He detailed the Easter story in 3 Nephi and invited all to consider the Book of Mormon's witness of the resurrected Christ. Kevin and Todd dissect the talk a little by discussing the differences in Christmas and Easter and the benefits of putting more emphasis on the latter. We can also benefit from a deeper understanding of the doctrines of Christ found in the Book of Mormon.
Elder Stevenson gives us a fantastic reminder of the importance of Easter in his talk “The Greatest Easter Story Ever Told.” Here are some questions to consider as you study: What ways do you and your family celebrate Easter? What ways can you celebrate Easter differently? "Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church" book by N.T. Elder Stevenson testifies of the Book of Mormon's powerful witness of Jesus Christ and recommends making it part of our Easter celebrations.
Todd and Kevin tackle Elder Stevenson's conference talk discussing testimonies; what they are, why they are important, and how do we nurture them. We discussed how we can share them in word and in deed.
Elder Stevenson teaches us powerfully about our testimony in his talk “Nourishing and Bearing Your Testimony.” The questions below are ones he asks and are great to consider as you study. Elder Stevenson tells a story of young man bearing his testimony at a leadership conference: "I am inspired by Kevin's courage in sharing his testimony. It is a courage repeated every day by faithful members of the Church throughout the world. As I share my thoughts, I invite you to reflect upon these four questions: 1. Do I know and understand what a testimony is? 2. Do I know how to bear my testimony? 3. What are the obstacles in sharing my testimony? 4. How do I keep my testimony?” And if you're looking for further study: "A Living Testimony" by Henry B. Eyring, April 2011 Gen Conf "Testimony" by Dallin H. “His Yoke is Easy and His Burden is Light” by Sister Dennis is such a powerful call to us to lead with love. Here are some questions to consider as you study: How can we help all to feel like they belong, regardless of personal circumstance we see or don't see? “Are there people in your path who you have felt inclined to judge?” And if you're looking for further study: "Lord, I Would Follow Thee" Hymn "Songs Sung and Unsung" by Jeffrey R. Todd tackles Gary E. Stevenson's talk on simple, yet effective missionary service of loving, sharing, and inviting and why it's important for every one of us to do so.
Elder Stevenson teaches three simple things all of us can do to share the gospel: love, share, and invite. In doing so, we help to fulfill the Savior's commission to “teach all nations.”
Missionary work is everyone! And Elder Stevenson's talk “Love, Share, Invite” is a fantastic reminder of this. Here are some questions to consider: How can you show Christlike love to those around you - strangers, family, friends? What are things you can invite people to in your life? And not just specifically churchy things, but things like service projects and dinners at your house. What is the Lord telling you? What questions do you want to study further? Questions? Saints Unscripted open up about their own weaknesses and short comings. Do our weaknesses define us or limit our potential? Check out Justin, Kwaku and Mimi, stars of the hit new YouTube show “3 Mormons” discuss Mormon weaknesses and share opinions and insight on what it mormons struggle with in today’s world! Is it true that Latter Day Saints struggle with being perfectionists? What kind of pressure does your divine potential really put on you? Each of our three hosts has a different take on weakness and how it affects their lives. Justin has struggled with being a self starter in the past. For example, he mentioned that he was very good at sports growing up, but stopped exercising as soon as he no longer had a coach that was telling him what to do. Old habits die hard and this has been a reoccurring struggle in his life. Mimi reminds us that we should never compare our weaknesses with other people’s strengths. She referenced an example given at the LDS General Conference titled “Spiritual Eclipse” In this talk, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve apostles, in order to portray how unrealistic social media can be, shows a picture of some well backed muffins in a beautiful table. The picture then zoomed out to show a messy table, a crying child, and a normal looking home. To her detriment, Mimi has personally struggled with comparing her worst with the best of her friend’s social media experience. Lastly, Kwaku shares a story of his “Friend” who felt guilty for kissing too many girls. While he was not doing anything wrong, he felt that he was not doing it for the right reasons and still felt bad about it. Are weaknesses necessary for this life? The group explains that working through our weaknesses brings us closer to Christ, while overindulging and giving in to our weaknesses leads to sin and furthering themselves form Christ.
Elder Stevenson shares his testimony of the ongoing Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It began with Joseph Smith, and it is still happening today.
In this talk, Elder Gary E. Stevenson shares the story of his great-great-aunt Mary Elizabeth Rollins and her experience with The Book of Mormon. This discussion allowed us to dive a little deeper into what is really meant by "The Keystone of our Religion" and reflect on the characters in The Book of Mormon with whom we can best associate. We also quibble over the pronunciation of "Zeezrom." Theme music - "Homeward Bound" by Jonny Eastman.
