You know how music can transport you back to a certain era in your life? I'll never forget gathering in college dorm rooms and tiny apartment living rooms with all my girlfriends in our twenties as we watched Grey's Anatomy. The show wouldn't have been the same without its unforgettable soundtrack, especially during those nerve-wracking ER scenes or the slow-burn love story between Meredith and Derek. So much of that iconic sound came from The Fray, the Denver-based band fronted by the haunting, heartwarming voice of lead singer Isaac Slade. I first met Isaac at The Nantucket Project and was instantly struck by his unique mix of humor, vulnerability, and grounded wisdom. His childhood was shaped by a loving, religious family that encouraged his musical passions. That support led him to gather friends and form The Fray, a band that would go from playing tiny venues to topping charts, dominating TV soundtracks, and selling out stadiums across the world.Isaac's voice helped define an era, but behind the music was a story few of us ever heard. In this honest, soulful conversation on this week's Cracking Open episode, we dive into:✨ The rise of The Fray and the whirlwind of early fame ✨ The toll of success and the mental health struggles it sparked, including on-stage panic attacks ✨ His decision to step away from the spotlight and embrace a quieter, more grounded life ✨ Why putting your oxygen mask on first is one of the most radical acts of loveIsaac didn't leave the band because he stopped loving music. He left because he needed to love himself—and his family—more fully. After years of sold-out tours and chart-topping songs, he found healing in the everyday: parenting, slowing down, and opening a record shop on Vashon Island, off the coast of Seattle. As I waited for him to join this conversation, I couldn't help but smile, remembering those college days when The Fray's music helped me survive heartbreaks, insecurities, and burnout. His voice once soothed my confused, overwhelmed soul. And now, nearly 30 years later, we're sharing stories about embracing the beautiful mess of life and doing what it takes to stay on the treadmill of adulthood.

I've learned along the way that no matter how much I feel like they are, other people's feelings are not my responsibility and they aren't yours either! On the flip side though, you are completely responsible for your own feelings...so heads up...you may feel offended and that's ok. (even though that gives me anxiety just saying it..lol) I love you guys!

We're excited to share something special with you. Today we're featuring an episode from the Proclaim Peace Podcast because we were so touched by this powerful conversation that feels especially meaningful right now—with an election right around the corner. In this episode, Patrick Mason, Jennifer Thomas, and their guest Thomas McConkie, explore how meaningful action doesn't come from this energy of frantic box-checking or a striving for perfection, but from a heart transformed by grace. Instead of trying to engineer a life of perfection to earn grace, grace comes first- it changes us from the inside—and the goodness that follows, flows naturally. As Thomas puts it, “It's a sequencing problem.” Reflecting on the story of Alma, they explore how prioritizing this spiritual inner work can help us align with love and find deep peace that can become both the fuel and the foundation of the meaningful work we do in the world. This conversation is full of insight and encouragement, and we're so excited for you to hear it. And with that, here's Proclaimed Peace with Jennifer Thomas, Patrick Mason, and Thomas McConkie.

Janelle Glick suggests that, as we come to peace with our own lives and the God who is working in us, we are more at peace with others and God who is working in them, which makes unconditional love and peace in community possible.Janelle also offers that reading through the New Testament and watching closely for the presence of women brings pleasant messages of hope for women. As male and female, we are called by Jesus to serve together in our communities. This involves hearing from each other and having challenging but peaceful conversations together.Virginia SatirJean McLendonSeven Desires by Mark and Debry LaaserSign-up for our monthly email newsletter which contains new and featured content!Join us on Patreon or become a website partner to enjoy bonus content!Visit our YouTube channel or connect on Facebook.Read essays from our blog or listen to them on our podcast, Essays for King JesusSubscribe on your podcast provider of choiceSupport us or learn more at anabaptistperspectives.org.The views expressed by our guests are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Anabaptist Perspectives or Wellspring Mennonite Church.

Episode 201: Protecting Your Personal PeaceMost of the world thinks of peace as the absence of conflict. Beyond that, many of those same people assume that peace is unattainable unless that absence of conflict is their current reality. Wouldn't it be terrible if that were true? That would mean that would be zero possibility of peace unless everything in our lives was pleasant, friction-free and easy on our souls. In this episode of Mavericks & Misfits, we will learn that peace is something that is to be prized, and especially when it is attained in the midst of real-life struggles. Because we live in a world conditioned by sin and brokenness, we will only experience spiritual peace to the degree that prioritize and pursue it. The Apostle Paul teaches us how to do exactly that as he instructs the Philippian believers to prioritize and protect peace in their own minds. We are personally responsible for our own personal peace and there are things we can do every day to either enlarge our peace or to undermine it.

On the first software project of my career, I thought doing a good job was all that mattered to move ahead. And while I was successful, I was manipulated by many other programmers through political games. After that experience, I was tempted many times in my career to fight dirty. And sometimes, I made the wrong decision. In this episode, I share the reasons why we're tempted as coders on software projects to throw ethics to the wind when the temptation for money, power, or prestige are strong. And how falling prey to that temptation may get you ahead in the short term, but it hurts you in the end. I hope you find some encouragement to take the high road when faced with political games on software development teams, and refuse to bend to other people's will who are unethical! Recipe for Personal Peace and Wellbeing in the New Year with Dr. Marvin J. Southard. (what do you think of this?) DESCRIPTION: It is a New Year, 2024, and we are walking through turbulence in the United States in many ways. There is climate turbulence, political turbulence and the turbulence of a divided society increasingly breaking into hostile groups. All of this feels more consequential because the U. S. is heading toward a Presidential election by the end of the year which will impact the global community. Addressing this divisiveness and their consequences, Dr. Marvin J. Southard, a longtime leader in the field of mental health, visits the podcast program for the third time and once again gives us a roadmap for coping in these times. Listen and learn how Dr. Southard offers us a recipe for empowering ourselves to face a world full of challenges today and into the future.
EPISODE 167 Peace is defined as “is a stress-free state of stillness, security and calmness, everything co-existing in perfect harmony.” To reach a state of personal peace, you must make an inward connection to yourself. Personal peace is independent of external states, circumstances and conditions. Personal peace is independent of the chaos in the external world around you. Personal peace is also independent of your ego. Personal peace is not a passive state. Instead personal peace is a dynamic state that requires the proper effort to achieve. Achieving personal peace requires an awareness of who you are and where you are in your own unique soul plan, that only you can accomplish. Personal peace comes from your alignment and connection to your own higher-self and your connection to the energy of the Divine. How can you achieve personal peace in your own everyday life? Achieving and maintaining personal peace allows you to make a positive impact in your own and become an inspiration to others. "Our hearts were drawn to the call of a prophet this April 2023 conference weekend. He reminded us that the easiest way to identify a follower of Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people. He told us that charity is the principal characteristic of a true follower of Christ, how charity defines a peacemaker. He promised us that if we would follow his counsel, we would arise as a spiritually strong woman of Christ. And then he told us the best is yet to come for those who spend their lives building up others. The prophet invited us to examine our discipleship, to make adjustments so that our behavior would be representative of a true follower of Jesus Christ. To live and interact with others in a higher, holier way. “I invite you to remember Jesus Christ. Pray to have the courage and wisdom to say or do what He would.” For the next six months, we plan to accept this invitation. In April and May, we will learn to UNDERSTAND HIS LOVE as we study the life and attributes of the PEACE GIVER. In June and July, we will study how to FEEL HIS LOVE as we find ways to experience PERSONAL PEACE. In August and September, we will discover how to SHARE HIS LOVE as we learn how to become PEACEMAKERS.Love gives second chances. Love asks, How can I help? Love is the welcoming in. Love doesn't stand higher, but meets people where they are. Love is never too good for someone. Love is full of grace. Love does not call attention to self. Love has an understanding heart. Love assumes the best. Love will not stand for injustice, helps carry the burden, creates trust, has high hopes and expectations. Love doesn't leave when things get tough.Love never fails. We look forward to spending the next six months with you!”
