Courtenay was called to the Bar in 1980 and appointed QC in 1998 at a time when black barristers were rare in the courts of England and Wales. If you name a serious high-profile case over the previous four decades, it is likely that Courtenay would have appeared defending. He defended in the Brighton hotel bombing, the Harrods Bombing, the Canary Wharf Bombing, the Dartmoor Riot,  the Blakelock murder, the Damilola Taylor murder and the Charles Taylor trial in the Hague.Courtenay is a social justice champion and a mentor and inspiration to successive generations. This podcast includes the use of a racist term of abuse which some listeners may find offensiveCriminal Justice Matters is produced by Adam Batstone Media & Communications Find out more about the CBA from the website Criminal Bar Association or follow the CBA on Twitter @TheCriminalBar

“Better than CSI”. How can you use contradictory and incomplete data to solve cold murder cases? With Professor Angela Gallop, CBE

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles meets Professor Angela Gallop, CBE, the forensic scientists' forensic scientist. Over the past four decades, the teams she's led have solved some of the most complex, difficult, and intransigent cold cases in British criminal history: Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common, Roberto Calvi under Blackfriars Bridge, and Damilola Taylor in Peckham. And perhaps most notoriously of all, Stephen Lawrence, stabbed by a gang of racist thugs on the streets of Eltham.   The details of how Angela and her teams cracked these cases – often bringing pioneering new techniques into play – are recorded in (ahem!) forensic detail in all manner of media. They're in Angela's 2019 book When the Dogs Don't Bark, her 2022 book How to Solve a Crime, and in any number of TV documentaries and specials. Most recently, this included the three-part ITV1 series, Cold Case Forensics, in February of this year. Not to mention Angela's appearance on the legend that is BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs last November. Links below.   Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on Friday 15 September 2023.   Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support.   Podcast artwork by Shatter Media.   Voice over by Samantha Boffin.   Angela tells us how her interest in solving crime was perhaps first kindled by the lurid stories in the now-defunct British tabloid Sunday newspaper, The News of the World, and her love of science was enflamed by an inspirational, sixth-form biology teacher at school “just in the nick of time”. This passion for working things out combined with an intense sense of natural justice saw forensic science take over her life after she joined the Home Office Forensic Science Service in 1974.   As her skills developed and as she founded and scaled some of the country's first and most successful private forensic science businesses, Angela became an international expert in blood and other bodily fluids – who they could and couldn't have come from, and the patterns they make and leave behind at crime scenes.   Forensics cover so many different areas in “offences against the person” – bodily fluids, of course, but also weapons, clothing – textiles, fibres, and fragments – toxicology, drugs, footwear, documents, and firearms. Increasingly, criminals leave digital traces of their activity, but the biggest single development in Angela's long and stellar career has been the rise to prominence of DNA evidence.   In perhaps the most memorable, moving, and intricate part of our discussion, Angela details how – after repeated examination and failures to identify the killers – she and her team unpicked the evidence that led to prosecution in the Stephen Lawrence case.   Angela also maintains that real forensics is much more subtle, time-consuming, interesting, and collegiate than the CSI TV drama series are ever able to portray.   EXTERNAL LINKS Angela's books https://www.waterstones.com/author/professor-angela-gallop/4009171   A ‘Long Read' on Angela's career, from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/mar/24/queen-of-crime-solving-angela-gallop-forensic-science   Angela on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs from 4 November 2022 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001dmpl   2023 ITV1 series Cold Case Forensics covering how Angela and her team cracked the Rachel Nickell, Lynette White, and Stephen Lawrence cases https://www.itv.com/watch/cold-case-forensics/10a1535/10a1535a0002   --   To find out how you rank as a data storyteller, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. Professor Angela Gallop is a forensic scientist who has helped solve some of the most notorious violent crimes in recent British history including the killings of Stephen Lawrence, Damilola Taylor and Rachel Nickell. After completing a degree in botany and a doctorate on the biochemistry of sea slugs, Angela joined the Home Office's Forensic Science Service in 1974, and four years later attended her first crime scene, where 18-year-old Helen Rytka was killed by Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper. Over the years cold cases became her speciality and in 1992 she investigated the death of the Italian banker Roberto Calvi. He was found hanging from scaffolding under Blackfriars Bridge, London, in a suspected suicide ten years before. Angela's work established that suicide was unlikely and that, in all probability, he'd been murdered. His killers were never found. In 1999 Angela and her team investigated the murder of Lynette White who was killed in her flat in Cardiff in 1988. Five men had been tried for her death and three - known as the ‘the Cardiff Three' - were sent to prison although their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal two years later. Angela's investigation made history when the murderer was identified and convicted through his familial DNA. Angela first worked on the Stephen Lawrence case in 1995 – two years after his murder - and returned to it in 2006. The forensic evidence that was found during this investigation helped to convict his killers in 2012. Angela has written a book about her career in forensics and another which outlines the challenges the discipline faces today. Presenter Lauren Laverne Producer Paula McGinley

For the next four weeks, we'll be introducing you to four 'ordinary' people with four extraordinary stories as part of a one-off How To Fail miniseries in partnership with Grey Goose. First up: Yinka Bokinni, a radio DJ who grew up on the North Peckham Estate in South London. She was the childhood friend of Damilola Taylor, the 10-year-old schoolboy stabbed to death in a stairwell on his way back from the library in 2000. Yinka joins me to talk about how this experience shaped her, why Damilola was so much more than the 'tragic victim' the media portrayed him as and how her resilience and passion for justice has been forged as a result. She also talks about her Nigerian and Irish upbringing, her love of Judge Judy (a podcast first) and the importance of celebrating everyday moments of connection by living victoriously. Yinka is such a beacon of optimism and hope that this was a truly uplifting interview. I hope you enjoy it.   * I have a new book out! To some, Britain seems like a utopia. Each year, thousands of people from all across the world flock to Britain in search of a better life. They all come filled with hope and anticipation of what their new life in Britain will look like. In 2000, a family from Nigeria came to Britain looking for pastures greener. Instead, however, they found themselves all too aware of just how depraved and cruel other human beings can be and got a stark insight into the dark underbelly of urban and lawless Britain. Please Vote for Morbidology for the British Podcast Awards Listeners' Choice:https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/voteSPONSORS -R3SET – Thank you to R3SET for sponsoring this episode! The sadness and regret he felt about leaving not only his dreams behind but also his friends.  A ‘sliding doors’ moment in his life led him to a career working as a security guard in Harrod’s before he then pursued a career in the Police Force. During this time Rav was posted to Peckham in Southwark to work on the estate where Damilola Taylor was murdered as part of a specialist unit specifically created in the aftermath of the tragic incident. If you're a big supporter of Labour winning the Christmas election then buckle up as it really isn't looking too good for them. According to a survey based on YouGov polling they are headed towards a huge defeat. Things might change if there is a late surge in voter registration but so far so it looks as though they are set to lose both Kensington in London, Dagenham and Rainham which have been a big supporter of Labour for decades. It's not that the public are enthusiastic about Boris Johnson and The Conservatives or that they aren't looking for change. (This episode originally aired on July 30th 2018)In this episode, we sit down with Yinka Bokinni aka the one and only Yinkdaddy. Yinka is currently a presenter for Capital Xtra and Diet Coke, she is a TEDEx speaker, a blogger and her list of accolades go on and on. At such a young age and with so many achievements under her very fashionable belt, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with. But the best thing about Yinka in my opinion, is the fact that she swings to the beat of her own drum and is unapologetically herself 100% of the time. During our conversation, she reminisced on what it was like growing up with 6 siblings, witnessing the impact of her neighbour Damilola Taylor’s death, studying law at university and how after hearing how much fun a Superdrug DJ was having whilst at work, made her want to become a presenter. Our conversation was filled with laughter, moments of reflection and too many motivational gems to count. With Yinka’s talent, drive and confidence, we are sure that she hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface of her limitless potential.
