Welcome Seekers! Ben here, today I apologize to Hesse for some of my recent behavior on the show which may or may not relate to the use of a certain soundboard. Then Jacques shows up and we talk about the Pope dying, have a battle about who is the most catholic (me) and make some of our own nominations for the Papal Seat. Then we take a dip into the NYT's advice column for intellectuals and give our thoughts on dilemmas such as kicking a disabled woman out of your pickleball league and staring at women in public.
The stakes have never been higher in a Canadian election, and we can't afford to sit on the sidelines. The OShow Scandal Panel is urging you to VOTE NOW in the Advance Polls this Easter long weekend! Join host Laura Babcock, alongside Mark Cripps and Keith Leslie, for a serious and sometimes hilarious discussion about the Leaders' Debates, campaign scandal and the issues Canadians will vote on in this election. We must be vigilant against the rise of authoritarianism, as seen in Trump's regime, which is steering many Canadians away from visiting America and the MAGA movement infiltrating our political landscape in Poilievre's Conservative Party. The endorsements for Poilievre from the most vile members of the American MAGA Regime should give every Canadian serious concerns. Why won't he disavow them? Who is running the Canadian Conservative Party? Now more than ever, we need to rally together and vote for the Liberal Party, led by the 'Rockstar Economist' Mark Carney. With Carney at the helm, we can strengthen our economy and safeguard our sovereignty and resources. The threats of Western separation by Premier Danielle Smith and others could have serious consequences for Pierre Poilievre and his Conservative Party in Alberta. Additionally, Premier Ford's comments about Poilievre's campaign could hurt their chances in the vote-rich province of Ontario. But polls and projections don't win elections! It's time to show up in record numbers and make our voices heard! Like and subscribe to join the conversation, and let us know your thoughts. Together, we can protect our Canadian democracy. Adam Hurrey is joined on the Adjudication Panel by David Walker and Nick Miller. On the agenda: a dubious use of the Sunday League staple of "Still 0-0, lads!", some unprecedented Carabao Cup co-commentary self-awareness, Ethiopian bars named after venerable Premier League wide men, absurd match postponements in the 10th tier and Andy Gray's 20-year obsession with teams having defenders on the posts at corners. Meanwhile, the panel wonder which current player could most plausibly play for any of the 20 Premier League clubs and enjoy some sensational data journalism about elite-level throw-ins of the mid-2010s. Today I talked to Matthew Ferrence about his book I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia UP, 2024). When a progressive college professor runs for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a deeply conservative rural district, he loses. That's no surprise. But the story of how Ferrence loses and, more importantly, how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In essays focused on showing goats at the county fair, planting native grasses in the front lawn, the political power of poetry, and getting wiped out in an election, Ferrence offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes the way stories told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. Matt Crawford speaks with educator and author Matthew Ferrence about his book, I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Decay. Ferrence and I discuss how we feel voters are being spoken at instead of to and how the machine of politics makes some outcomes predetermined against the will of the people who vote for those exact outcomes. A great read at any time in our history but especially now.

In several ways, akin to the growing collective demographic of people who don't have children, the overlooked value of voter relevance & influence is too often dismissed by dominant political narratives. Tune in for this timely conversation with Matthew Ferrence, author of I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia University Press, 2024). In 2020, Matthew Ferrence ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in a deeply-red district, and lost quite badly. In his newest book, he reflects on this experience to explore how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans, and how losing offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me he offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes that the ways stories are told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. Tune in live or on-demand to learn more about the underpinnings of the US political landscape and the need to recognize overlooked nonconservative voters in rural America.
In Politics and in life, the Rules are different for different people. Take Age. Old Age. We are a nation obsessed with Youth. When President Joe Biden was seeking reelection the media put the spotlight on his every stumble, every slip of the tongue, every mistake. They blamed his Age. What about Trump? It didn't matter that Trump is not that much younger than Biden and he is certainly not a great political orator. The Rules are different for Trump. He spews hate speech and lies. He was impeached twice, charged with multiple felonies, and a jury convicted him of 34 Felonies for Business Fraud, in connection to Hush Money payments to a Porn Star. And still the polls show Harris and Trump are locked in a statistical dead heat. MAGA Republicans love Trump. The media loves Trump. The Rules are different for Trump. Although it is NOT an October Surprise, I was a bit shocked with I logged into the New York Times on Sunday morning to read the article I quote from in this Podcast. One month before election day! Dr. Matthew Ferrence is an English professor at Allegheny College. In 2020, he ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a deeply red district and lost badly. In his new book, “I Hate It Here, Please Vote For Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay,” Ferrence chronicles his election defeat to explore how the American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of rural progressive voters and how his election defeat offers insight into the politics of our nation. In essays focused on living in the countryside, the political power of poetry, and his landslide election loss, Ferrence offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of rural American voters and emphasizes the misunderstanding of our Red-Blue divide. Today's show opens with the second half of my interview with Matthew Ferrence, author of "I hate it here- Please Vote for Me: Essays On Rural Political Decay." Ferrence, a creative writing professor at Allegheny College, ran for political office as a liberal democrat in Crawford County, Pennsylvania- one of the most decidedly republican conservative counties in the whole region. (The beginning of the interview was shared in yesterday's podcast.) After that, from 2018, comes an interview with Benjamin Carter Hett, author of "The Death of Democracy: Hitler's Rise to Power and the Downfall of the Weimar Republic."

Matthew Ferrence is a creative writing professor at Allegheny College. In 2020, he decided to run for political office as a progressive democrat in Crawford county, Pennsylvania - one of the most decidedly conservative republican counties in the region. His book is both a memoir of that experience of running for office (and losing badly) - as well as a reflection on how politics play out in much of rural America.

Education has been one of the most prominent political and social issues in recent years, including during the recent primary elections when voters had the chance to make their voices heard. Some of the issues that we hear a lot about are chronic absenteeism, underfunded schools, the battle between public schools and for-profit charters, and diversity and representation in the classroom. On this episode, I am happy to welcome the president of the Washoe County School Board of Trustees to talk about these issues and more. Beth Smith was recently re-elected with a huge margin, large enough that she has secured her seat and won't have to compete in a general election in the fall. On this episode we talk about the important issues I mentioned, as well as the recent superintendent selection process and Beth's own story of getting involved in local education politics. WHY DO THEY HATE WOMEN? Trump, MAGA's and Mother's Day The Stormy Daniels Cross-Examination and the E. Jean Carroll case continue to haunt me on this Mother's Day, 2024. Let's delve into a topic that has sparked much debate and curiosity—the significant number of women in America who voted for Donald Trump in the last Presidential Election. This trend is likely to continue in the upcoming election, but the question that lingers is: why? WHY? The evidence is clear: Donald Trump is a woman-hater. Look at the facts. But why, oh, why do his followers hate us as well, especially when many of his followers are our Sisters? I lay out some of those Women-Hating Facts in this episode. Please Subscribe. Music: Clip from Cher's TV show, where the Goddess sings I am A W-O-M-A-N with Supreme Goddess Raquel Welsh. One short audio clip of Helen Reddy singing "I am Woman, Hear me Roar." Listening to a wide range of Women Have Power songs to produce this podcast only made me all the sadder when I saw Women's Rights being trampled in Washington, at the Supreme Court, and at the Capitol. And across the country in State Legislatures. Please Vote!

This episode contains themes of a sexual natureAchilles is one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology. The son of Peleus, a Greek King, and Thetis, a divine sea nymph, Achilles was a demigod with extraordinary strength and courage. The perfect combination to make a great warrior, he is perhaps best known from Homer's epic poem the Iliad, which details his adventures in the final year of the Trojan War.He's also gone down in history for his passionate love for his companion, Patroclus. Sources and mythology differ as to the nature of their relationship, and in this episode, we ask the question: was it really erotic? What do the sources say? Does our definition of love differ from that of the Ancient Greeks? And, how did it inspire one of the greatest military generals in history: Alexander of Macedon? To help explore these themes, host Tristan Hughes is joined by returning guest Professor Alastair Blanshard from the University of Queensland.Voiceover: Lucy DavidsonScript Writer: Andrew HulseEditor: Aidan LonerganAssistant Producer: Annie ColoeSenior Producer: Elena GuthrieDiscover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world-renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more. Dan tells the extraordinary tale of Captain James Cook. Born a labourer's son, he would rise to become one of history's greatest explorers. He went about as far as it was possible to go, sailing the Pacific Ocean and arriving on the shores of Australia and New Zealand. For these voyages, he assembled an A-Team of maritime explorers - marines, scientists, and a Polynesian explorer who had memorised the constellations of the stars. So what trials did he face on these epic voyages? Which peoples did he come across? And how did it all end? Laura continues her fascinating interview with Hazel Thornton who was juror #9 at the first seven-month trial in 1993. Listener discretion is advised. In this episode you will hear more detail about the horrific, insidious, cruel, and torturous abuse Lyle and Erik were subjected to by Jose Menendez. Laura and Hazel discuss the multiple forms of abuse the boys were subjected to, including coercive control and the omnipresent threat Jose Menendez posed to Lyle and Erik. It's also important to underline that the testimonies that Lyle and Erik gave about the abuse at the first trial was totally uncontradicted and uncontroverted evidence. The prosecution did not ask one single question about the abuse. Hazel shares the slew of sexist and misogynistic insults directed at the female jurors who believed the boys were abused and were in fear for the lives because they understood the evidence presented and the psychology of abuse. In May 2023 a habeas petition was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court detailing two new key pieces of evidence revealing that, contrary to what the prosecution said in their closing speech in the second trial that Jose Menendez was not only a violent, sadistic, and brutal man who sexually abused his own children, but that he was abusing other boys including Roy Roselló who was in the boy band, Menudo.
