Hey everyone... so, in case you haven't heard... this show, Future Around & Find Out, has been nominated for a Webby for best tech podcast! *** VOTE HERE: https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2026/podcasts/shows/technology ***I was kind of being chill about this. I am, admittedly, not my own best hype man, but then I got riled up when I heard the hosts of The Vergecast, one of the other nominees and last year's winner, complain that they weren't winning by enough votes and that they wanted to win by such a large margin that it -- quote -- hurts everyone's feelings. Well, those are my feelings Nilay Patel was talking about! Look, I like the Verge -- and I definitely didn't have them on my list of people I might feud with this years -- but f* those guys! Let's win this thing! So could you please vote? Today, April 16th is the last day to do so and we're currently just behind, in second place. The link to vote is in the show notes. You can also find it on the show's website at Future Around dot comAnd what is it you're voting for? Well, if you've been listening then you already know what this show is all about, but I also thought for newbies and even for long time listeners, it might be fun for you to hear exactly what the Webby judges listened to when they voted for FAFO to be a best tech podcast nominee. They ask for ten minutes of audio, so I made a highlight reel — and here it is.*** VOTE HERE: https://vote.webbyawards.com/PublicVoting#/2026/podcasts/shows/technology ***

Hey Friends~  We are in the middle of the series “When Communication is hard” to discuss a topic that is just as important and impacts our kids.  That is—the strength of the parent relationship itself. Today's conversation with Jan shifts the focus to how, when parents grow in connection and calm, it creates a foundation that helps even the most challenging behaviors begin to settle. What if the key to calmer kids isn't found in another parenting technique, but in strengthening your relationship as a couple? In this conversation, JanTalen and I explore how parents can decide what's both nice and necessary in the middle of stress, so connection isn't lost when tension rises. We talk about why the parent relationship needs to come first, and how, when it does, children actually feel more secure and settled because they are growing from that foundation. You'll hear simple ways to walk yourself through overwhelming moments, allowing your calm and logic to “hold” your emotions so you can respond with clarity instead of reacting in frustration.  And throughout it all, we come back to gratitude, growth, and celebration, because when you begin to shift, even in small ways, your child often follows, and together you create a home where connection and progress happen side by side.   In the middle of our series When Communication is Hard, we're pausing to talk about something just as important for our kids—the strength of the parent relationship itself.  Today's conversation with Jan Talen shifts the focus to how, when parents grow in connection and calm, it creates a foundation where even the most challenging behaviors can begin to settle.  What if the key to calmer kids isn't another parenting technique, but strengthening your relationship as a couple? Jan knows it doesn't have to be that way. Using her marriage and family knowledge and skills, she developed the pathway for new parents to stay together while parenting their kiddos and keeping their marriage relationship strong. She practiced this (with Chip) within their own marriage and family of 4 kids. The D of divorce was squashed. Their marriage and family turned into one filled with the A's of appreciation and adoration. When a progressive college professor runs for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a deeply conservative rural district, he loses. That's no surprise. But the story of how Ferrence loses and, more importantly, how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In essays focused on showing goats at the county fair, planting native grasses in the front lawn, the political power of poetry, and getting wiped out in an election, Ferrence offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes the way stories told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. In Politics and in life, the Rules are different for different people. Take Age. Old Age.  We are a nation obsessed with Youth. When President Joe Biden was seeking reelection the media put the spotlight on his every stumble, every slip of the tongue, every mistake.  They blamed his Age. What about Trump? It didn't matter that Trump is not that much younger than Biden and he is certainly not a great political orator.  The Rules are different for Trump. He spews hate speech and lies. He was impeached twice, charged with multiple felonies, and a jury convicted him of 34 Felonies for Business Fraud, in connection to Hush Money payments to a Porn Star.  And still the polls show Harris and Trump are locked in a statistical dead heat. MAGA Republicans love Trump. The media loves Trump.  The Rules are different for Trump.  Although it is NOT an October Surprise, I was a bit shocked with I logged into the New York Times on Sunday morning to read the article I quote from in this Podcast.  One month before election day! Education has been one of the most prominent political and social issues in recent years, including during the recent primary elections when voters had the chance to make their voices heard. Some of the issues that we hear a lot about are chronic absenteeism, underfunded schools, the battle between public schools and for-profit charters, and diversity and representation in the classroom. On this episode, I am happy to welcome the president of the Washoe County School Board of Trustees to talk about these issues and more. Beth Smith was recently re-elected with a huge margin, large enough that she has secured her seat and won't have to compete in a general election in the fall. On this episode we talk about the important issues I mentioned, as well as the recent superintendent selection process and Beth's own story of getting involved in local education politics. Please VOTE for Renoites as Best Local Podcast in the Reno News and Review's Best of Northern Nevada. You have until July 21 only. This episode was recorded at LCD Modern in Reno, Nevada. Dan Snow's History Hit

This episode contains themes of a sexual natureAchilles is one of the greatest heroes in Greek mythology. The son of Peleus, a Greek King, and Thetis, a divine sea nymph, Achilles was a demigod with extraordinary strength and courage. The perfect combination to make a great warrior, he is perhaps best known from Homer's epic poem the Iliad, which details his adventures in the final year of the Trojan War.He's also gone down in history for his passionate love for his companion, Patroclus. Sources and mythology differ as to the nature of their relationship, and in this episode, we ask the question: was it really erotic? What do the sources say? Does our definition of love differ from that of the Ancient Greeks? And, how did it inspire one of the greatest military generals in history: Alexander of Macedon? To help explore these themes, host Tristan Hughes is joined by returning guest Professor Alastair Blanshard from the University of Queensland.Voiceover: Lucy DavidsonScript Writer: Andrew HulseEditor: Aidan LonerganAssistant Producer: Annie ColoeSenior Producer: Elena GuthrieDiscover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world-renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more.
