It wasn't that long ago that scientists didn't think animals could rival humans in terms of intelligence, emotions, or empathy. But the groundbreaking work of Dr. Frans de Waal helped change all of that. De Waal spent his life studying the lives of animals — especially our closest cousins, chimpanzees and bonobos. The primatologist died last week at the age of 75, and we wanted to remember him by sharing one of our favorite conversations with him on the show. It's from 2019, when he published his book Mama's Last Hug: Animal Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves. In it, he tells the story of a female chimp who didn't produce enough milk to feed her young. When de Waal taught her to feed her baby with a bottle instead, she repaid him with what most of us would recognize as gratitude: holding both of his hands, and whimpering sadly if he tried to leave.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Primatologist Frans de Waal inadvertently popularized the term ‘alpha male.' Now, he's debunking common stereotypes to explain what an ‘alpha male' really is – empathetic and protective. All social animals establish hierarchies, but being an “alpha male” is not merely about strength or intimidation, according to primatologist Frans de Waal. An alpha male can often be a figure admired for empathy and protectiveness. De Waal criticizes the misconception of the term as synonymous with a bully. He further explores the concept of gender, arguing its flexibility and highlighting the existence of significant individual variability in behavior among primates. De Waal emphasizes empathy as a key factor in social cohesion, suggesting it might hint at morality among primates. Despite our advancements, he believes humans are fundamentally similar to primates emotionally and socially. In this episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, Andy Lopata is joined by Eksteen De Waal; an international speaker, author and leadership consultant. He is a Fellow of PSA UK and President of PSA Netherlands. Eksteen describes himself as a team architect, explaining that he views teams as structures that require attention and maintenance, much like a building. He illustrates how his work entails assessing existing teams, designing new teams from scratch (such as during mergers and acquisitions), or renovating teams to address conflicts and relationship issues. Eksteen shares insights from his 30 years of experience in analysing team dynamics, fostering inclusivity, and resolving conflicts. Eksteen primarily works with leadership teams, particularly in start-ups and scale-ups, to shape organisational culture. He highlights the significance of the founders' relationship systems, which often shape the culture of the organisation. Eksteen shares that certain behavioural patterns and coping mechanisms may be developed, both positive and negative, which can in turn affect the team dynamic. Andy and Eksteen discuss belief in personality types. Eksteen thinks that reducing individuals to acronyms or colours overlooks the complexity of who they are. Instead, he believes in using assessments as a way to initiate conversations and gain insights into how people engage and interact with each other. His assessments focus on behaviour, relationships, cognitive empathy, and motivation, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of team members. The discussion moves to conflict management, with Eksteen advocating for learning to manage conflicts within the team's paradigm instead of avoiding them. He highlights Cognitive Empathy as a key factor in understanding individual differences. Acknowledging and utilising these differences can enhance team collaboration and cohesion. Andy and Eksteen also look into the importance of understanding ourselves as a way to navigate conflicts and build compassionate relationships. Eksteen shares a personal story from his childhood that shaped his curiosity about why people behave badly. He explains that his work focuses on conflict management within teams and utilising assessments that help uncover the barriers that hinder compassionate relationships. They touch on the inclusivity and discrimination experienced in the workplace. Eksteen shares his own experiences of being made to feel like an outsider due to his sexual orientation and race. He emphasises the impact that external assumptions and labels can have on individuals, particularly those from minority groups. Andy and Eksteen discuss the conflict surrounding the term "woke" and how it has become polarised in different contexts. Eksteen believes that finding alternative ways to describe ideas and perspectives can help foster connection rather than separation. The episode concludes by focusing on leading through others and the role of emotions in building trust and communication. Eksteen emphasises that listening involves not only hearing the words but also understanding the emotions at play. By creating an environment where people feel safe to express their emotions and thoughts, leaders can identify where disconnections and conflicts arise within teams and organisations. Through thought-provoking discussions, Andy and Eksteen emphasise the power of listening, empathy, and understanding in building connections and resolving conflicts. By embracing these qualities, individuals and teams can create inclusive and compassionate environments that foster trust, collaboration, and growth. Talking points: gender, gender equality, alpha males, alpha females, violence, culture, psychology I've been following Frans' work for a while, and have admired how dedicated he is to his work and to uncovering the complexity of primates. This was such an enjoyable and fascinating conversation! This episode is a compelling look at just how complex and nuanced something like gender can be, from one of THE world's top primatologists. With more and more pressure to outsource your opinions, your arguments, and your beliefs to the fastest talking pundit, it's more important than ever to take a step back, breathe, and check the science. Dr. Frans B. M. de Waal is a Dutch/American biologist and primatologist known for his work on the behavior and social intelligence of primates. His first book, Chimpanzee Politics (1982) compared the schmoozing and scheming of chimpanzees involved in power struggles with that of human politicians. Ever since, de Waal has drawn parallels between primate and human behavior, from peacemaking and morality to culture. His scientific work has been published in hundreds of technical articles in journals such as Science, Nature, Scientific American, and outlets specialized in animal behavior. His popular books — translated into twenty languages — have made him one of the world's most visible primatologists. His latest books are The Age of Empathy (2009), and The Bonobo and the Atheist (2013). Two recent edited volumes are The Primate Mind (2012) and Evolved Morality (2014). De Waal is C. H. Candler Professor in the Psychology Department of Emory University and Director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, in Atlanta, Georgia. Since 2013, he is a Distinguished Professor (Universiteitshoogleraar) at Utrecht University. He has been elected to the (US) National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences. In 2007, he was selected by Time as one of The Worlds' 100 Most Influential People Today, and in 2011 by Discover as among 47 (all time) Great Minds of Science. Being editor-in-chief of the journal Behaviour, de Waal has stepped in the footsteps of Niko Tinbergen, one of the founders of ethology. His latest research concerns empathy and cooperation, inequity aversion and social cognition in chimpanzees, bonobos, and other species. He and his students have pioneered studies on how behavior is culturally transmitted in the primates, whether elephants recognize themselves in mirrors, how primates react to unequal reward divisions, how well primates spontaneously cooperate, and whether bonobo orphans are as emotionally affected by their trauma as human orphans. Sam and Emma host Alex de Waal, Executive Director of The World Peace Foundation and Professor at Tufts University, to discuss the ongoing civil conflict in Ethiopia and how it is affecting the Tigrayan people. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the US funding bill, GOP killing cannabis reform, the final DOJ criminal referrals coming out of the 1/6 committee, the USPS' shift towards electric, and more on George Santos' resume, before diving deeper into the January 6th committee, and the US' long history of refusing to hold powerful white men to account. Alex de Waal then calls in as he gets right into walking through the long history of war in Ethiopia, beginning with tensions between the authoritarian leadership of Ethiopia (supported by the West) and the totalitarian regime of Eritrea, and the decades of war that came from it, culminating with the election of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia, a shift away from the Tigrayan party leadership of the last few decades, who pushed for a security pact with Isaias Afwerki's Eritrea. Parsing through this shift, Alex, Sam, and Emma tackle the progression of regional supremacy from the era of Haile Selassie's Amhara leadership, through the Tigrayan decades, and into the recent turn against Tigray, as Ahmed and Afwerki used their pact to stamp out the Tigrayan political party that had dominated Ethiopian politics for the last few decades. After tackling the nature of this conflict as a battle for greater global/continental supremacy, de Waal walks through the differing perspectives on Tigray between Ahmed (who is largely taking a political opportunity) and Afwerki (who is seen to hold genocidal intentions), and how this resulted – despite strong defense from Tigrayan forces at first – in an attempt to starve out the Tigrayan people. After running through the massive devastation that came out of this genocidal endeavor between Ethiopia and Eritrea, Alex, Sam, and Emma explore how they got the rest of the African Union, and the world writ large, to look the other way, before wrapping up by tackling the recent treaties signed that put a stop to hostilities in Tigray, and why conflict in the country is not coming to a close despite them. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the various holes in Congressman-Elect George Santos's resume, and expand the conversation on the US' refusal to hold their political leaders accountable. They also tackle the simmering beef between Lauren Boebert and Majorie Taylor Greene, dive into Greg Gutfeld having fun with the concept of child abuse, and discuss the failure of local news outlets to cover George Santos' lies, plus, your calls and IMs! Ben de Waal is the VP of Engineering for Swan Bitcoin. In this interview, we discuss living on bitcoin, what it means to be a libertarian socialist, the issues with capitalism and why Bitcoin should be a home for those on the left and the right. - - - - The last year has been marked by a growing interest in Bitcoin from progressives. A number of high-profile liberal names have emerged from within the community extolling the utility of Bitcoin. But, this is not a new phenomenon: the community has always been a home for the full spectrum of views. Further, there are important reasons why Bitcoin appeals to those on both the left and the right. Bitcoin has garnered a strong libertarian following. This was something Satoshi envisioned: in 2008 he stated in a post “It's very attractive to the libertarian viewpoint if we can explain it properly.” This was successful; there are many who have been attracted to the Bitcoin community for its potential to provide an alternative to state-controlled currency, and thereby limit the size of government. This alignment with the right has acted as a barrier to some on the left. But not all. The original cypherpunks philosophy was predicated on anarchist ideals, to work outside of government controls. This attitude is analogous to those on the left who feel disenfranchised by the current global capitalist hegemony. Bitcoin too offers those on the left a chance to opt-out of what they perceive to be a broken system. Increasing numbers are waking up to this opportunity. The issue is obviously that the left and the right have been at loggerheads for centuries. Over this time debate has evolved into grandstanding. Misconceptions have been allowed to fester on both sides. This has been supercharged by social media where the general aim now is to marginalise an opposing opinion rather than seek to analyse and potentially assimilate different ideas. If Bitcoin really is freedom money, then it needs to be a home to people of all opinions. The issue is that our society has become polarised; a winner takes all attitude has metastasized. We need to reaffirm the basis of a strong democratic system: a pluralistic society that tolerates and supports multiple centres of power. Where ideas are debated, solutions are found, and progress is made. We need the same philosophical approach as the United States' founding fathers.
