A brilliant record by The Wannadies from 1995 to conclude the Memorabilia Podcast and a bumper episode for our final outing. We discuss the career and discography of Sweden's hugely underrated indie popsters, look back on live performances we attended, and provide a comprehensive guide through their breakthrough third LP, Be A Girl, including their Gold-certified single 'You & Me Song' featured in the movie 'Romeo and Juliet' and a couple of episodes of Coronation Street! We conclude our very enjoyable Wannadies chat with our album ratings. Spoiler alert - they're high ones! We take a look back at August 1995 for the UK, and in particular, we share our thoughts and memories of the singles battle at the top of the UK singles charts between Blur and Oasis, which culminated in Blur hitting the number one spot the day before the release of Be A Girl. As well as the album charts from this week, the end-of-year singles charts for 1995 also come under scrutiny, which, on balance, was just about more good than bad. Artists discussed from 1995 include Radiohead, Supergrass, Michael Jackson, Coolio, Bjork, Ash, Robson & Jerome and Paul Weller. At the box office, the likes of Judge Dread, Batman Forever, The Usual Suspects and Die Hard with Avengance are doing well, and Rick recalls an embarrassing story of getting stranded in a lay-by with a date after parking up following a trip to see Bruce Willis' third outing as John McClane. We wrap things up with a recent gig review at The Crescent Community venue in York, where we saw Sheffield's Before Breakfast and York's The Howl & The Hum. Levellers have announced their brand new acoustic album Together All The Way, the follow-up to their 2018 Top 20 album We The Collective. The album will be available on Limited edition Red Vinyl and CD and can be pre-ordered here The first song ‘Down by the River ‘O' is available now on all streaming platforms and was written by friend and collaborator Rev Hammer about the Great Flood of 1968 in Buntingford. The last ‘Collective' album was recorded at Abbey Road with the legendary John Leckie five years ago and resulted in their highest chart position in twenty years. Levellers always planned to do another album where they acoustically reworked songs from their back catalogue, but eventually came to the conclusion not to try to top what they achieved with We The Collective but to go another way. So they decided to strip everything right back and go for a more traditional, folk approach as they reimagined various songs from their past. They reconvened the collective - this time with Sean Lakeman producing and Al Scott mixing - at their own Metway Studios in Brighton. Everything was recorded live, with the musicians playing through the songs until they had versions they were happy with. Of the album and recording, the Levellers say, “It was truly a fun record to make, under the rigorous guidance of Sean. Sean's a musician himself, always bringing ideas and get out of jail free suggestions when we got stuck. It's a stripped-back, raw iteration of the collective with deep folk leanings. As energetic as the first one but definitely different.” Levellers were joined again by Hannah and Ollie from the Moulettes on cello, vocals and percussion plus the mighty Dan Donnelly on his first official Levellers recording. Together All The Way is scheduled for release in March 2023, to coincide with the band's acoustic tour of theatres and venues around the country, with special guests Moulettes (Duo), Wilswood Buoys and Jess Silk. And 2023 is an extra special year for the Levellers as not only do they celebrate 35 years of being a band, but it will also be the 20th Anniversary of their hugely acclaimed Beautiful Days Festival, one of the biggest independent music festivals in the UK. A bumper episode for season 2, episode 2 with special guest, current Leveller and all round brilliant human being, the very talented Dan Donelly. As well as focusing on his terrific 2011 album 'Country & Northern', and hearing about the genesis of each song, we have some fun discussions about why drinking pints of Guinness in a music video isn't a great idea, and possibly being the last vanguards of 'the album'. There's also serious chat about depression and suicide, and why Dan feels this record is his 'Blood on the Tracks'. Oh, and we have actual music! There's a taster of each of the songs on the album, which is a good thing as I'm reliably informed that the record isn't on Spotify. However, if you've a spare thirty odd quid, then you can buy the CD on Amazon or eBay. It'll be money very well spent in our humble opinion. The UK singles and albums charts from May 2011 come under serious scrunity - well as much as we could muster for the singles as we only knew about 3 of the songs between us! As for the albums, Cee Lo Green, Rhianna, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Wombats and Adele all feature. There's much love for Dave Grohl, but not so much for Bruno Mars and Jessie J. We're delighted that Ian Prowse features heavily in the episode, as Dan tells us about the song from Ian's latest album 'One Hand On The Starry Plough' written about him, aptly entitled, 'Dan'. It's a song that 'Louder than War' commented on their album review: "Dan again sees Prowse deliver a character-led narrative, this time over a sea-shanty song that puts me in mind of The Decemberists, which from me is high praise indeed." Dan Donnelly himself recounts his first hand experience of hearing Ian playing the song live at a recent gig in Sunderland, at the venue that Dan co-owns with Futurehead Barry Hyde. We finish the episode with each of us picking an Ian Prowse 'Top 3' - a far from easy task with such an extensive back catalogue of brilliant and eclectic music spanning over thirty years. None of us choose his Magnus Opus 'Does This Train Stop On Merseyside' deciding that was a given, but there's some very emotional and personal choices amongst our picks. Thanks Dan! Dan Donnelly is the quintessential live gig master; he's one of the hardest working singer/guitarist on Long Island. Dan has been working gigs for decades on Long Island, from the North Shore to the South Shore and out to Montauk, including Stephen Talk house in Amagansett. He has rubbed shoulders with famous musicians and openly collaborates with Erik McCormack's group FES as their honorary lead electric guitarist. Steve Yusko your host explores Dan's inspiration to become a musician and his collaborative spirit as a mentor to many. Dan speaks to his tactics in obtaining gigs and what appears to be a relentless schedule of weekly events. A quick parking lot interview with two snowboarders that had a huge impact on the sport. Dan Donnelly (Dano) was raised at Baker. A member of the legendary MBHC. Dano's smooth style is still his signature today, and he's still getting after it in-bounds and out-of-bounds. Rob Morrow brought us Morrow snowboards in 1989. 3 years later he graced the cover of Transworld Snowboarding twice in one year.
