This summer, the Green Rush team is revisiting our extensive archives, curating a selection of over 300 past episodes. This collection will feature memorable moments, insightful interviews, and some of the team's favorite episodes, providing both new listeners and long-time fans an opportunity to explore or rediscover the best of Green Rush. Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of our new podcast in the fall, "Alternatively Speaking." We're revisiting our interview with Jim Belushi, actor, musician, comedian, all around entertainer as well as cannabis entrepreneur and the founder of Belushi's Farms. Jim has long been a household name due to his distinguished acting career but he's also incredibly active in the cannabis community with a nearly 100 acre farm in the heart of Oregon's beautiful banana belt, he is out there getting his hands dirty and producing some of the most-talked about cannabis in the state. With brands like Captain Jack, The Blues Brothers and Good Ugly Weed and Belushi's Secret Stash, Jim Belushi's cannabis products are quickly becoming the most talked about product line across the state. Jim was gracious enough to sit down with our hot Anne Donohoe and guest host Phil Carlson to talk about his cannabis journey and venture into becoming a cannpreneur. In the discussion, Jim dishes on the role cannabis plays in his life, his work with important advocacy organizations like the Last Prisoner Project and why he loves getting into the dirt and actually taking part in the growing of his own plants. This episode was a real treat and something that we hope all of our listeners can enjoy – we sure did! So don't sit back, lean forward and enjoy! Jim Belushi, Hollywood Star and Cannabis Entrepreneur It's been 12 years since Jim first came to Oregon's Rogue Valley where his dear friend John has a sprawling property along the Rogue River, one town over in Shady Cove. Their children are the same age and attended classes together in California, so the families gathered for many activities over the years. With Jim's own family's experience and numerous others marred by opioids and the stigmatization of cannabis, Jim was incredibly grateful to have been led to the Rogue River where he first envisioned Belushi's Farm and his own part in the agricultural and healing gift of cannabis. A proud Chicagoan, Jim graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in Speech, Education and Theatre before moving on to become a resident member of Chicago's famed Second City for three years. In 1979, he left for Los Angeles, where he was cast on TV, launching his career as a performer. In addition to starring in a diverse and remarkable list of television and film— movies from Trading Places to Wonder Wheel, working with famed directors like Oliver Stone, Roman Polanski, David Lynch and Michael Mann—Jim wrote and appeared in Saturday Night Live for two seasons. He's also served as an executive producer, music composer, director, book author, and Broadway star. His own television show According to Jim aired for 182 episodes during eight seasons before the family favorite launched into off-net syndication in 2007. Locally, Jim is actively engaged in several projects benefiting the communities surrounding Belushi's Farm in Jackson County, Oregon. In Medford, Jim is helping reconstruct the historic Holly Theater to bring the 1930s Spanish Colonial movie palace back to life as Southern Oregon's largest indoor concert venue. In Eagle Point, Jim's assisting with the reconstruction of The Butte Creek Mill, destroyed in a 2016 electrical fire, to preserve its heritage, build community, and improve the environment. In Los Angeles, Jim's a benefactor of the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration, and Stuart House, a program of the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center Rape Treatment Center. Jim's also a supporter of The Joyful Heart Foundation in New York City, whose mission is transforming society's response to se...

He's also lent his voice to many animated projects including, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED, THE REPLACEMENTS, AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE, AMERICAN DAD, and the OPEN SEASON film series. Carren Strock — equally at home with a pen and paper, a paintbrush and canvas, needle and thread, or hammer and nails — is an all-around Renaissance woman. She is the author of the ground-breaking book on a previously undiscussed topic,Married Women Who Love Women, now in its third edition. She is also the author of A Writer's Journey: What to Know Before, During, and After Writing a Book, In the Shadow of the Wonder Wheel (a mystery novel set in Coney Island, New York), Tangled Ribbons (a lesbian paranormal romance) , Grandpa and Me and the Park in the City. (a rhyming picture book for children), Potatoes With Appeal; 105 Mouth-Watering Recipes, (a cookbook dedicated to her love for the potato), and her latest book, Secret Survivors, (a gripping middle grade chapter book). Her artwork has been honored in both regional and international art shows and has been exhibited at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Her photographs have appeared in architectural magazines and her articles have appeared in numerous publications in the United States and abroad. For years, as her children were growing up, Ms. Strock exhibited her arts and crafts throughout New England taking awards for her paintings, quilting, and woodwork. When asked if there was anything she couldn't do, her family would tease, “find the kitchen.” The family often picniced on the floor because the kitchen and dining room tables were covered with projects. The middle child of three, Carren was raised in Brooklyn, New York, by parents who encouraged creativity. When she was eight, she told her father that her doll needed a bed. He took her to a hobby shop and bought her a coping saw, balsa wood, and paint and she designed and built a cradle. During hot summer days, her mother would set up a card table in the street and she and her siblings would pass the time painting or cutting paper and making collages. After having lived in Milford, Connecticut, and then in East Amherst, New York, she returned to her roots in Brooklyn. She is a member of the the Authors Guild, the Publishing Triangle, Out Professionals, the American Society of Journalists, the International Women's Writing Guild, and the Women's National Book Association for which she was a workshop director for more than twenty years. She has taught writing classes as well as classes in photo composition in New York City and at IWWG sponsored workshops at Skidmore, Brown, and Yale Universities. She is now available for speaking engagements. Ms. Strock is the mother of two and the grandmother of two who, she says, make her heart sing. Today's poem is Wonder Wheel by Wo Chan. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “Late spring, I attended a brilliant performance of Pretend It's a Boat Poetry Tour, featuring comedian/poet Derrick C. Brown and actress/poet Amber Tamblyn at Coop Gallery. They stood behind a makeshift boat fashioned from a card table turned on its side and invited everyone to imagine they were in it. We were no longer in a gallery but on the seas, being carried along by their stand-up comedic performance and poetry. The evening reminded me of readings of yore, the kind of ease and whimsy that happens between artists and longtime compatriots — no stiff explications of theory smothering a poem, no solemn acts of confession, just a shared vulnerability and intimacy, an overflowing love between friends.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. As the hot summer days started to fade, a group of ACEers came together in New York to visit some very special theme parks and acknowledge the history behind them. Preservation Conference took place in late August. Attendees visited Playland Park, Adventureland, Luna Park at Coney Island and Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, where the park owners, the Vourderis family, gave the group a warm welcome. Co-host Jessica Gardner talks with ACE member and Preservation Conference attendee Maddy Khristov-Weinrach about her fabulous experience at the event. In this episode: [03:20] Maddy walks through the days at Preservation Conference, including elusive ride credits on kiddie coasters, low crowds, raffle entries and some of the great coasters that the group rode. Wonder Wheel is the 47th film written and directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Kate Winslet as Ginny, a former small time actress who has ended up a waitress at the faded Coney Island in the 50s. An affair with the local lifeguard Mickey (Justin Timberlake) can't make her happy either, especially when her husband's estranged daughter Carolina (Juno Temple) turns up. This is a tight, taut and claustrophobic drama about flawed people. It unfolds like a play anchored by an incredible performance from Kate Winslet, who sits in a beautiful backdrop of a recreated Coney Island from another time. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages podcast. This week we look at 2017's Wonder Wheel. How it was conceived, how it was made and how it's really, really bleak. You never know when you'll find a podcast guest in the wild. During a visit to Deno's Wonder Wheel earlier this summer, Andrew was riding their new roller coaster, Phoenix when he struck up a conversation with a ride operator. DJ was kind enough to join Andrew again on the Coaster101 podcast, talking all things Deno's Wonder Wheel (and its 103-year-old custom-milled steel wheels), Coney Island, Phoenix, Roller Coaster Maintenance, and more. Time Management Workshop About Geneva: GENEVA CARR is best known for her portrayal of Marissa Morgan on 6 seasons of the CBS television series BULL. Additional TV credits include Law & Order: SVU and Criminal Intent, Rescue Me, Younger, The Mysteries of Laura, Royal Pains, Elementary, The Good Wife, and Sex and the City. Film credits include Wonder Wheel, Love and Other Drugs, Ava's possessions, It's Complicated, College Road Trip, and the upcoming Asian Persuasion. Geneva earned a 2015 Tony Nomination for Lead Actress in a Play for her performance as ‘Margery' in Broadway's Hand To God. Additional NY theatre credits include Trevor, Just Sex, I Wanna Destroy You, Finding Claire, Rose's Dilemma, Clash by Night, Betty's Summer Vacation, and Boise. You have to create a space where you can find work for yourself. Bull was my eighth pilot, which I like telling actors about because it doesn't happen overnight. This was my eighth. Hand to God led to Bull on CBS. I did that for six seasons. And the truth is, nobody loves to audition as much as me because it's a 30-second movie starring me right now. I love to prepare. It's like going to the gym. It's like putting on a show. And you know that for 5 minutes, you have a captive audience. Casting directors want to like you. They want to get to know you. So if you can put your nerves aside and realize that it's a real treat to be in that room. You have to watch everything ON TV. “I don't put people on TV if they don't watch TV.” You can only be yourself. Maybe it's easier for me now because I know who I am. I'm not apologizing for who I am. I can't please everyone. But the truth is, I don't like everyone, and the more you are authentically yourself, the more you will work. If you want to build somebody up, give them an honest compliment. I had to go back to being an actor looking for work with a whole new toolkit. The Director Tells the Story Being a costar and a guest star has zero to do with being a series regular. It is very challenging being a series regular. Costars and guest stars- savor those opportunities to learn because a series regular is really hard.
Len Green joins this week's TDN Writers' Room to discuss DJ Stables' Breeders' Cup-winning filly Wonder Wheel and to advise on changes that will have implications for horse owners' taxes in 2022.

WONDER WHEEL, 11min., USA, Drama Directed by Caleb John Cushing A couple goes on a date at an amusement park. From Caleb John Cushing: There was a really quick turnaround from inception to execution to editing. Probably 6 weeks overall. I first pitched the idea to my creative partner Joshua Ster in my living room, and whenever I can make him laugh I know that I have something worth developing. I wrote the outline and sent it to Bahar Beihaghi, the actress, who graciously agreed, and then we all got in a group chat and scheduled a time where we could go down to Coney. We only shot in one two hour period on one day, and then since it was all one take the editing process was relatively quick and painless as well. So I'd say about 6 weeks from “here's this idea” to hitting final export. Playing on the Film Festival Streaming service later this month. The new Showtime series Let the Right One In expands on the ideas introduced in the now-classic 2008 Swedish horror movie and the American remake. A man, Mark Kane (Demián Bichir) and his tween daughter, Ellie (Madison Taylor Baez) move in to a New York City apartment, where she befriends the lonely, bullied boy down the hall. But she has a huge secret that her father helps her keep- she is a child vampire who must survive on blood and can't go outside in the daytime. The series Let The Right One In explores the relationships and conflicts within families, the horror of vampires, and brings in new characters, crimes and mysteries to add layers to the story. Cinematographer Eric Branco had seen the original Let The Right One In, shot by legendary DP Hoyte van Hoytema, as well as the American version, Let Me In, lensed by none other than Greig Fraser, and it remains one of Eric's favorite movies. He was thrilled to have the opportunity to bring his own look and feel to the story and make it his own. Eric focused on the idea that for the young vampire girl, the indoors is safe and the outdoors is not, so the home features very warm light with lots of yellows, while outside is a shadowy, cool blue and green. He also played with the natural contrast of light between night and day. At night, it was important to play up the danger and horror elements with action taking place in shadows and tunnels, with yellow streetlights selectively showing bits and pieces, building suspense. Let The Right One In is much wider in scope than the movies, featuring many other storylines and locations, which created its own challenges. Eric and the crew had to work within the time constraints for the child actors, especially at night. Planning, blocking and rehearsal became an essential part of some shoot days. When they were shooting the pilot, they had to wait until dark, during the summer solstice- the longest day of the year. That left them with about 2 ½ hours to shoot with the lead actress, Madison Taylor Baez. The most challenging day for Eric was when they did a night shoot at Coney Island with very limited time on the Wonder Wheel with the actors. He and the camera department planned extensively and strategically placed cameras all over to cover all of the action, after several scouts and extensive rehearsals before dark. Eric says that when you have to work with that many cameras and with so much riding on timing and coordination, it becomes more like a team sport and it feels amazing to pull it all off. Eric also likes to have an open, trusting relationship with the actors and let them have more freedom of movement within the frame to explore their characters and enhance their performances. Eric thinks the trust is built on the DP's end, especially when you're shooting something in an unconventional way like on Let The Right One In. Season Two's theme is “Growing Up in Coney Island” through the decades, from the 1930s to the 21st century. In Episode Seven, narrators who grew up here in the 1990s share stories of loss and change. They remember living in Gravesend Houses and Sea Rise apartments as well as on West 5th, West 8th and West 19th Streets. The Boardwalk, the Beach, Astroland, the Cyclone Roller Coaster and the Wonder Wheel were their playgrounds. The decade began with the Cyclone winning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The same year, a fire gutted the wooden house under Coney's other surviving roller coaster from the 1920s, the still standing but nonoperational Thunderbolt. The house was known to film lovers as Woody Allen's boyhood home in the movie Annie Hall, but it was originally built as the Kensington Hotel in the late 1800s. It was the last remaining structure from Coney's original waterfront, since the shoreline at that time was much farther inland than it is now. The 1925 coaster was caught between an owner who neglected it, and City officials who considered it an eyesore. Some viewed the Thunderbolt as a symbol of Coney's decline, but to many, it served as a monument to survival. The oral histories in Episode Seven are with Tiana Camacho, Emmanuel Elpenord, Theresa Giovinni, Allen James, and Marina Rubin The interviews were conducted by Amanda Deutch, Katya Kumkova, Ali Lemer, Samira Tazari, and Tricia Vita between 2014 and 2020. This episode was produced by Charles Denson, Ali Lemer and Tricia Vita. John Adam and Toby Poser of the Adams Family / Wonder Wheel Production join us this week. If are a Necromaniacs listener, you will undoubtedly be familiar with them. I'm had them, along with Zelda their daughter, on a guests and we've covered two of their excellent films, this year's folk horror Hellbender and The Deeper You Dig from 2019. We shifted the conversation a bit this time around to talk about music; during my previous chats with them, I discovered that we have a lot of the same interests when it comes to music, so I thought it would be fun to cover that here on EWB. Check out the this killer playlists on Spotify embedded in the show notes at everythingwentblackmedia.com. Intro: “All of the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “My War” – Black Flag.
Season Two's theme is “Growing Up in Coney Island” through the decades, from the 1930s to the 21st century. In Episode Six, Narrators who grew up here in the 1980s, or grew up coming to Coney Island from nearby neighborhoods, share their stories. They remember living in Gravesend Houses and O'Dwyer Gardens, high-rises overseen by the New York City Housing Authority, as well as apartments on West 19th Street and in Brightwater Towers. Astroland Park, Fabers Fascination Arcade, and Ruby's Bar and Grill were their playgrounds.Coney Island during the 1980s is best symbolized by Greek immigrant Denos Vourderis's purchase of the 1920 Wonder Wheel, the amusement area's oldest continuously operating ride and the founding of Deno's Wonder Wheel Park. Another ray of hope in 1980's Coney Island was the Astella Development Corporation's plan to build low-rise attached homes on vacant lots slated for high-rise projects that were abandoned when the city went broke in the 1970s. Astella developed or renovated nearly one thousand single-family, owner-occupied homes on city-owned land in the 1980s.The oral histories in Episode Six are with Alito Hernandez, Shavon Meyers, Zohra Saed, Eric Safyan, and Jeffrey L. Wilson. The interviews were conducted by Kaara Baptiste, Charles Denson, Leila Goldstein, and Tricia Vita between 2017 and 2021.
