In this episode I got to talk to my internet friend turned real life friend, Erin Loechner. Erin is a homeschooling mom to 3, a wife, a gifted writer and an incredibly creative, brilliant, unique person. I adore her. In this episode Erin shared with us about her brand-new book, The Opt-Out Family: How to Give Your Kids What Technology Can't. Erin's book is a call to action and an invitation for every parent. It calls them to sit up and take notice of how the algorithm is coming after our kids, and then invites them to do something about it. The book is full of compelling research and helpful, practical ideas for helping your family opt out. What makes Erin's book even more compelling is that she is actually living that life with her family. Four years ago Erin left her successful career as a social media influencer, shut down her social media accounts and opted out. She knows what she is talking about. I really enjoyed this conversation with Erin and I learned a lot. I know you will too. Here are some of my favorite quotes from this episode: *I wanted to model for my daughter what it looked like to have a vibrant career and life without social media. *If my kids say, “I don't like how social media makes me feel, but I don't know any other way. I want to be able to say, I've got another way. Let's do it together.” *You can't know the opportunity missed but you can know the fruit gained. *This is the world our children live in, where playground swings become selfie props. It is not an accident. It is the work of the algorithm. It is the work of a machine, a mission and a great strategy dreamed up by people in board rooms who make a living by stealing a life. *We are no longer asking why we would opt out. We are asking how we opt out. *It's not enough to say no to devices. We have to say yes to something better. *We parents can do it better than the tech guys! *Our kids just want to be with us. It's really so simple. *There is a powerful message being sent to parents that our kids don't want to be with us, especially as they grow up. Then we get afraid and think we have to compete, to be cool, to be better than Tik Tok. But when we slow down and just spend time with our kids, even our teens, we find out that they really do want to be with us. *Start here: Give your kids your eyes. The 2 books Erin and I talked about are: The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio (here) and Grandma Gatewood's Walk (here) Chase joy and go read them now! Find Erin's book here Visit her website here for additional resources and helpful info. If you haven't already, please take a minute to subscribe to my podcast. I'd also be so very grateful if you leave a 5-star rating and write a quick review. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team. I love you guys! Greta

If you missed the last episode, you might want to go back and listen because this is *fanfare* Part 2 of our Once Upon a Time tribute. In this episode we continue to take on the roles of the Witch, (who we now know is named "Kerfumbly"), Marian, and Onesie-Twosie to supply additional books for your reading list. As you recall from last time, each host plays the Witch and will supply Onesie-Twosie with their bookly desires. Then, with a little bit of sound effect magic, our other hosts will supply titles that fit that description. Will we finally get out of Kerfumbly's dungeon? The Bookmark is your place to find your next great book. Each week, join regular readers Miranda Ericsson, Chris Blocker and Autumn Friedli along with other librarians as they discuss all the books you'll want to add to your reading list.
This week Kyle and Matthew are joined by Marty Ploy to talk about booking shows and choosing a life in DIY music. Marty was a prolific booker for decads booking early SoCal shows for tons of bands including Against Me!, Defiance Ohio, and Frank Turner. He shares his story of getting involve in music without being a musician. We talk about the often undersung heroes of a music scene. The people outside of the bands who book shows and run zines and put out records. A healthy scene needs to be supportive if it wants to thrive and Marty gives some great insights into how to foster a good scene. HI GUYS! We're so sorry we're missing you this week, but we're getting ready for our trip to Chicago to meet our podcast drag mothers! Don't worry, we'll tell you all about it, but we've gotta get packing! While you're celebrating with your mother this week, revisit one of our favorite episodes about one of our favorite mothers: On this week's Kicking & Streaming, the siblings take a deep dive into the incredible life of Evelyn Ryan, who supported a family of 12 in the 1950's by entering contests. in this episode I had a great talk with Theo Hilton (Nana Grizol, Defiance Ohio) we catch up on life during the pandemic and how to adjust in this modern landscape, we talk a bit about the upcoming election and we talk about Cruisin Records and how Theo and other artists were intentional about coming together to create a label where they could talk about the queer/trans experience in the music scene. Then we talk about songs we've been into lately, what's been getting us excited musically. I hope you all enjoy the playlist we made! I have often referred to the coaching profession as a fraternity or brotherhood, and it is. However, it is also a highly competitive and sometimes ego-driven profession as well. Because of that nearly everyone who has spent any time in coaching likely has members of the fraternity whom he/she dislikes. Likewise, those of us who have spent time in the coaching ranks are likely to have coaches who dislike us. It is just a fact of life in coaching. Except, it seems, for Kirk Lehman. I have been around high school coaching in Ohio for more than 25 years, and I have never heard anyone speak about Kirk Lehman that doesn't seem to absolutely love the guy. That is just one reason that I am so excited to have him on the podcast. Coach Lehman has had a remarkable journey in high school coaching. After a playing career at Ohio University, Coach Lehman was an assistant at Logan High School. He became the head coach at Rossford High School and after a tumultuous ending to his time there, he was out of high school coaching for a number of years before taking over the program at his alma mater, Defiance High School, where he won an improbable state title in 2017. Coach Lehman retired after the 2020 season. Please enjoy my visit with Kirk Lehman of Defiance High School. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-cook0/support
