Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Director Tommy Kail and choreographer Sonya Tayeh have teamed up for the first time in Hulu's new rom-com musical, “Up Here”. Not wanting to stick to just one medium, Sonya talks about being an expansive artist and following wherever her passion takes her. Tommy also shares his deal with Disney, putting a musical on mainstream TV and how Kirsten and Bobby's ability to make musical comedy resonated with him. While Sonya has done numerous projects and won awards already, the choreographer shares open up about dealing with imposter syndrome, calling it "big, old, scary monsters" and why she loves physicalizing them. Working as the director and choreographer for "Up Here", both Tommy and Sonya share how they operate, including collaborating with other creatives and shooting with at least two cameras at all times. Sonya reflects more on her love for collaborating, trying out all the options, starting a conversation and hearing what her collaborators have to say. Tommy, on the other hand, speaks about consciously surrounding himself with talented people that make him a better person. With Sonya and Tommy's love for collaborating, it's no surprise that the two found each other to create something beautiful. Sonya Tayeh is a TONY Award-winning choreographer and director. There are few experiences that capture the essence of human drama as powerfully as opera and prize fighting. Join host, Joe Specter, as he explores the connection between these two seemingly distant worlds on the next episode of UnMic'd. Joe is joined by one of the most dominant trainers in MMA, Greg Jackson of Jackson Wink MMA, whose gym has prepared some of the world's greatest professional MMA fighters, such as Jon Jones and Holly Holm; Joe Isenberg, an accomplished fight choreographer who has worked with opera companies including Washington National Opera and The Metropolitan Opera, and has won awards including the 2013 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Choreography, and The Kennedy Center Kenan Fellowship; and George Birkadze, an internationally recognized dancer and choreographer with Boston Ballet who works around the globe, and who is also a martial arts expert with black belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kyokushin-kai Karate, and Judo. How do the worlds of opera, dance, and stage combat connect to the raw reality of the Octagon? How does preparing for the ring differ from preparing for the stage? You'll also discover more about what we know everyone is wondering – if you had to have a street fight with a character from an opera or ballet, which character would you choose, and why?

It was created by American Idol producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and is produced by 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions The series premiered on July 20, 2005, with over ten million viewers and ended the summer season as the top-rated show on television. The first season was hosted by American news personality Lauren Sánchez. Since the second season, it has been hosted by former British children's television personality and game show emcee Cat Deeley. The show features a format where dancers trained in a variety of dance genres enter open auditions held in a number of major U.S. cities to showcase their talents and move forward through successive additional rounds of auditions to test their ability to adapt to different styles. At the end of this process, a small number of dancers are chosen as finalists. These dancers move on to the competition's main phase, where they perform solo, duet, and group dance numbers on live television, attempting to master a diverse selection of dance styles, including classical, contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, street, club, jazz and musical theatre styles, among others. They compete for the votes of the broadcast viewing audience which, combined with the input of a panel of judges, determines which dancers advance to the next stage from week to week, until a winner is crowned as "America's favorite dancer". So You Think You Can Dance has won seven Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography and a total of nine Emmy Awards altogether. Licensed variations of the show, produced for broadcast markets in other nations, began airing in August 2005, and dozens of localized adaptations of the show have been produced since, airing in 41 countries to date. The sixteenth season premiered June 3, 2019. On February 20, 2020, the show was renewed for a seventeenth season, that was set to air in the summer of 2020, but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the season was indefinitely postponed on June 18, 2020. Dance Informa presents Tony Selznick: The Hollywood Dance Podcast
In this episode of The Hollywood Dance Podcast, Tony Selznick invites Marguerite Derricks to speak about career longevity in the dance industry. Marguerite Derricks is one of the world's most respected working choreographers. In addition to being the first and only choreographer to be awarded three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography, she is also the recipient of five MTV Movie Awards for Best Dance Sequence. Marguerite’s television credits include HBO's Westworld and True Blood, Showtime’s The Affair, Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Netflix’s Glow, the Emmy Award-winning Behind The Candelabra, and FX’s American Horror Story. Her television episodic credits also include popular shows such as Dancing with the Stars, Will and Grace, Bunheads and more. Marguerite has also choreographed and worked on some of the most popular movies of the last 20 years. From Showgirls, Austin Powers and Charlie's Angels, to 13 Going on 30 and Bad Moms 2, Marguerite has been involved in some of Hollywood's greatest hits. Selznick, Hunt, and Derricks spend this episode discussing how longevity can be achieved in today's dance industry, and why attitude and presentation play a big role in how you're perceived as an artist. The Hollywood Dance Podcast is produced by Dance Informa and MSA Agency. Audio editing by Tidalwav Studios.
Sonya Tayeh made her way from the city of Detroit to New York City to find herself choreographing for some of today’s biggest names including Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Florence and the Machine. She’s been nominated for two Emmy Awards for her work on So You Think You Can Dance, and won the Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards for “Outstanding Choreography” for her work on David Henry Hwang’s dance-play Kung Fu, for which she also received a Drama Desk nomination. She recently made her Broadway debut as choreographer for the smash hit Moulin Rouge the Musical and is also working on the upcoming production of Sing Street. Sonya's process may be unique - sometimes she has to dance in silence before adding the music back in so that she makes sure she doesn't get trapped in the music because "If it's interesting without music it will be interesting with music." In all her work, she utilizes the ensemble to push the story along and doesn't just have them dance because they're there. In Moulin Rouge, the story progression relies heavily on the ensemble and the dancing. Dance Informa presents Tony Selznick: The Hollywood Dance Podcast
In this episode of The Hollywood Dance Podcast, Tony Selznick invites Tessandra Chavez and Mark Meismer to speak about how teaching and education has changed in the commercial dance industry. Tessandra Chavez is an Emmy Award-winning choreographer, who has worked on shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, World of Dance, America’s Got Talent, and American Idol. In 2015 Chavez, along with Derek and Julianne Hough, won the Emmy for Outstanding Choreography for the season-finale routine on Dancing with the Stars to Sia’s “Elastic Heart.” Chavez has also worked with iconic band MUSE, Dancing with the Stars in China, Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, D-Trix’s Dance Showdown, Disney’s Dance Crew and the film Heartbeats directed by Duane Adler. Chavez is a world-renowned teacher – for six years she was head of Jazz dance at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. Chavez continues to work with a new generation of dancers, and believes in making them both great people and performers. Mark Meismer has been dancing and teaching professionally for more than twenty years, and has worked with artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, and Paula Abdul. On screen, Meismer has worked on Austin Powers 2 and 3, Starsky and Hutch and A Time For Dancing. Meismer has also worked on several TV shows, including Dancing With The Stars, Scrubs, Will and Grace, The MTV Video Music Awards, The American Music Awards and The VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards. Mark is also an original member of Mia Michaels’ NYC dance company RAW, and worked as Michaels’ assistant choreographer on Celine Dion’s A New Day in Las Vegas. As well as running his own dance company, Evolution, Meismer teaches master classes and workshops across the USA and internationally. Selznick, Hunt, Chavez and Meismer spend this episode discussing how teaching and education has changed in the commercial dance industry, and how today’s choreography requires a phenomenally high standard of dance from the performers in the pieces. In many ways, choreography and teaching now go totally in tandem. The Hollywood Dance Podcast is produced by Dance Informa and MSA Agency. Audio editing by Tidalwav Studios.
Warren Carlyle (Kiss Me Kate) is a British director and choreographer, nominated this season for Best Choreography. He received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Director of a Musical for the 2009 revival of Finian's Rainbow. Carlyle most recently directed and choreographed the Broadway musical After Midnight, Chaplin and Hugh Jackman: Back On Broadway; Choreographed On The 20th Century, The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, and the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies. Warren is a big part of the Tony race this season (and my money is on him), but he still took time out of his busy rehearsal and cocktail party schedule to sit down with me and talk about: How he was a real-life Billy Elliot and why his Mum got him started on his journey. What made him hang up his dance belt and turn to a life of choreography. The process of creating a number . . . and how he knows when it is working and when it isn’t . . . . How he got “Too Darn Hot” from an 8 to a 10! What it’s like working with stars like Hugh Jackman and Bette Midler. FIND THE WINNING BALANCE. You hear so often that people get to the top of the mountain and realize that the summit isn’t the answer. To be a champion, you have to know that there is so much more to success than a final outcome. If you focus on the goal without being connected to your joy and larger purpose, you will get burnt out. But when you’re coming from a place of passion, the results will fall into place. To explore this topic further, I gathered parts of conversations with four world-class champions who’ve visited The School of Greatness in the past: Julianne Hough, Ray Lewis, Shawn Johnson, and Novak Djokovic. Julianne Hough is a two-time winner of ABC’s Dancing with Stars and now sits as a judge on the show. She’s one an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography and has appeared in many movies and TV productions like Footloose (2011) and Grease Live on Fox. Ray Lewis is a former NFL linebacker. He is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl MVP and played his entire 17-year career with the Baltimore Ravens. Shawn Johnson is a gymnast who won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics for balance beam and a silver medal in floor exercise and all-around. She’s also a five-time Pan American Games gold medalist. Novak Djokovic is a Serbian tennis player is currently ranked third in men’s singles. He’s won 14 Grand Slam singles titles and four Wimbledon titles among many more. These athletes have achieved the immense success in their fields and have all realized that being the best is not enough of an end goal to give them purpose. So learn how these champions get in the mindset to win on Episode 707. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why being content won’t ruin your drive (10:30) What Ray Lewis learned from joining ESPN (13:40) Why Ray Lewis thinks he was able to play football for so long (14:10) What people can do to win even if they get second (14:56) What helped Novac Djokovic get through a breakdown (21:04)
Christopher Scott never wanted to dance. Now he's a three-time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Choreography. After his mother packed him and his sister from Maryland to Hollywood to give them better opportunities, Scott defied having to enter a dance class, opting for track and field instead. "If you had told me I was going to be a dancer I would have laughed in your face," he says. He entered Hollywood High School in the 9th grade, and applied and was accepted into the performing arts magnet program. It was in his very first semester that he checked out the school's production of West Side Story (his sister was in it and dating the "coolest guy in school") and out of sheer boredom learned the songs and the dance moves and landed a part in the production. During his four years in the program, he had leading roles in several stage productions and studied various styles of dance, particularly excelling in tap. To hone his tap dancing skills, he spent many weekends as a street performer on the Venice Beach boardwalk and the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California. In 11th grade, three-time Emmy winning actress and choreographer Debbie Allen (and future So You Think You Can Dance judge) came to the school to audition dancers for the opening of the American Music Awards with Mariah Carey. "I feel like the luckiest kid in America," he says. It was his first paying job and when he got his paycheck (about $650) he thought 'I think I'm gonna go with this,' and his dancing career began. Since then Chris has worked with renowned artists such as Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, Khalid, and Gloria Estefan, and has worked on a variety of film and TV projects including the Emmy-nominated 82nd Academy Awards, Step Up 4: Revolution, Step Up 5: All In, Dancing with the Stars, and America’s Best Dance Crew. In 2009, Scott teamed up with Harry Shum, Jr. to choreograph the super hero inspired web series The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, aka The LXD. An experiment in storytelling through dance, the series is the brainchild of writer/director/producer Jon Chu. In 2011, Scott made his So You Think You Can Dance debut and thereafter made frequent visits choreographing contestants' duets and group routines. He received Outstanding Choreography Emmy nominations for his work on the show in 2012 and 2014. In my interview with the three-time Emmy nominee and Scott talks about his leap from dancer to choreographer, his love of props in routines, reveals his advice for new dancers and the song that got away - the only tune he hasn't been able to snag the rights to (yet). Christopher Scott is nominated for Outstanding Choreography for So You Think You Can Dance. The Emmy voting period ends August 27th at 10pm PST. The Creative Arts Emmys will be a two-night affair on Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th. The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be Monday, September 17th. This interview runs 25m. Opening: So You Think You Can Dance theme Closing "Say You Won't Let Go" cover by Boyce Avenue (used by Christopher Scott in one of his nominated dance routines featuring Allison and Logan)

Amanda has extensive experience producing educational and entertaining concerts, festivals, and competitions, as well as handling recorded music distribution and production. In her capacity as Executive Director, Amanda has brokered high-profile licensing and development agreements, facilitating the use of the ICCA brand and related properties in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect as well as the development of Sing It On, a docu-series produced by CORE Media Group (American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) that follows college a cappella groups on their journey through the ICCA tournament. Amanda serves as Co-Executive Producer on the series, which debuted in 2015 on the Pop Network. Under Amanda’s leadership, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) tournament has more than tripled in size and currently features 3,500 singers from more than 300 competing groups each year. And this year, Varsity Vocals created The Open, a competition that encourages singers to bring together groups of any age, experience or origin to form a cappella “dream teams.” By giving them a stage — and a cash prize of $25,000 to jump start their professional career, our programs encourage young people to sing together throughout their lives. The finals of the Open are being held September 23 at Carnegie Hall in NYC. Head to https://varsityvocals.com/events/ for tickets. In college, Amanda was an ICCA competitor herself, serving as business manager and choreographer for the University of Illinois vocal jazz a cappella group, No Strings Attached. Under her leadership, the group earned second place and accolades for Outstanding Choreography at ICCA Midwest Semifinals, as well as their first track on BOCA. Glenn Douglas Packard was born the eldest of three in Detroit, MI to Roger and Paulette Packard. When Glenn was 5 years old, his father convinced the family to pack up all their belongings and move to a run-down farm in Michigan, where Roger saw a potential future in the dairy business. As Glenn was growing up into adolescence and the farm grew profitable, he began working in the family business in Clare, MI. Eventually, Glenn went on to study Dairy Management at Michigan State University. On one of his vacation trips back home, he suffered a horrible accident with a 4-wheeler. With a compound factor to his right tibia and fibula leg, his doctors insisted the only option was to amputate his leg from the knee down. After months of fighting the infection, which had spread through his entire body, due to the open wound, countless surgeries and a steel rod places in his leg, Glenn had to relearn how to walk. He made a promise to himself that if, and when, he fully recovered, he would do the one thing he had dreamt of all his life; to dance and entertain. While at 21, where most dancers are already experienced, Glenn was just walking into his first dance class. Within 2 years he was accepted into the scholarship program of the highly acclaimed Alvin Ailey School of Dance in New York City. Fast forward 10 years later, after being dubbed "Dancing entrepreneur" by The New York Times, Glenn is one of the most sought after dancer/artist directors and choreographers in the city. His multi-dimensional & innovative work made him an international commanding force in the entertainment industry. Providing a wide spectrum of styles, he has been celebrated for casting and choreographing such projects as Whitney Houston's All-Star Gala, featuring powerhouse artists like P!nk, Deborah Cox, & Brian McKnight, and A Miracle On 34th Street, performed at the world famous Madison Square Garden with numerous artists.Creative control was entrusted to Glenn by The 2001 GLAAD awards, the American Cinema Awards, reinventing the Chippendales show in Vegas along with their USA & world tour, Giants Half Time Show, the New York City Knicks, Miami Heat Dancers, and the Premios Awards working with the biggest artist in Latin Music like Ricky Martin, Prince Royce, Daddy Yankee, Carlos Vives, Marc Anthony, Fanny Lu, Chino Y Nacho. Along with the Latin market take over, Glenn is also known internationally, working on the King of Morocco's New Year's Eve Gala and in Bollywood for his groundbreaking choreography in the film, "Rhythm." Other films like Little Hercules in 3D, Dancing on the Edge, and feature as one of the top choreographers in the documentary MOVE: The Film. The 2016 World Choreography Awards were held in Hollywood last night and MIH was on the red carpet! The event honors the best in media choreography. When I was in high school, I used to choreograph cheerleading routines and it was the best thing happening in my life. And that was on such a small scale, I can't imagine choreographing huge routines for commercials, films and televisions. But that's what these dancers were being honored for last night at The Montalban Theater in Hollywood. Choreographers were nominated for Motion Picture Television Episodic, Commercials, Television Reality Show/Competition, Music Videos, Television Award Show/Special, Digital Content, Digital Content Independent, Live Stage Performance. Allison Holker and Stephen Boss at the 2016 World Choreography Awards in Hollywood I interviewed nominee Allison Holker and her husband Stephen "Twitch" Boss about the digital commercial she choreographed and starred in for HP. She tells me she worked hard to translate their idea into a dance on camera. Christina Applegate at the 2016 World Choreography Awards in Hollywood I also spoke to Christina Applegate about her love of dance and why she was at the awards last night. She was presenting the In Memoriam for choreography legend Doug Caldwell who passed away in August. Christina told me about the powerful effect he had on her life as a choreographer, and friend. In fact, dance has been such a huge part of her life since she was a young girl and she was very emotional when telling me about Doug's role in her journey. One of my favorite moments of the night was interviewing world-renowned choreographer Anita Mann. She's an Emmy-award winning choreographer, as well as a dancer and actress. Her choreography credits include 5 seasons on the 1980s pop dance television show, Solid Gold, for which she was nominated twice for a Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography, "The Muppets Go Hollywood" for which she was nominated for her first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. She shared a story with me about getting her start in the industry working as a background dancer with Elvis Presley. yes, THAT Elvis! It's such a delight to hear her talk about her work with Elvis! Choreographer Anita Mann at the 2016 World Choreography Awards The show featured live performances by choreographers Liz Imperio, “Kida”, Paul Becker, The Joe Tremanie Faculty and Dancers, Anthony W. Chris, who is one of the most flexible Choreographers in the biz (pun intended) sat down with me and chatted about his choreographic career and . . . How he transitioned from Dancer to Choreographer so dang fast. Why rehearsing a show directed by Bart Sher was one of the scariest things he has ever done. Why you may be surprised to hear what his “style” is. Why Choreographers make great Directors. How the modern musical is changing and what that means for choreography. And he’s today’s podcast guest! Listen in to hear him talk about: His secret to choosing material or what kind of shows lots and lots and lots of people want to see. How he turned Aladdin from a show in trouble out-of-town into a big fat hit. Why Choreographers make great Directors. What losing his hair had to do with the start of his career. How he maintains a show (or his many shows) after they are open. Enjoy and I hope you learn as much as I did!
