We have covered every iteration of a comic con in Denver, pretty much since our inception as a team. From Denver Comic Con, all the way to Fan Expo Denver. The crew and the show has gone through many changes, and has risen to the heights of one of the most popular show in the country! It's been great to be able to watch it grow, as we've grown!! But, today marks the beginning of Fan Expo 2023!! A weekend long event full of all of the nerdy stuff that you could ever ask for! To celebrate the starting of the show, we had the opportunity to speak with Andrew Moyes! He is the Vice President of Fan Expo HQ "Fan Expo Denver (previously Denver Pop Culture Con and Denver Comic Con) is a speculative fiction fan convention held annually in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. The event is a celebration of comics, books, movies, TV, gaming, and other pop culture." If you've never been to a comic con, and you're local, make sure that you come partake in this weekends activities!! You won't be dissapointed! We made a very fun return to what is now referred to as, Fan Expo Denver! We've been with this comic con in Denver, since it's inception, either just as fans, but mostly as press! What started as Denver Comic Con, then Denver Pop Culture Con, has now flourished in Fan Expo Denver! And we attended their "special edition" which occurred over Halloween weekend! While we were there, we were able to speak with actor, Barbara Dunkelman! Among some awesome accomplishments, Barbara is the Creative Director for the production company Rooster Teeth. Rooster Teeth is responsible for productions like Red vs Blue, Camp Camp, and RWBY. For today's interview with Barbara, we of course focused mostly on the anime, RWBY, in which she is the voice for Yang Xiao Long. RWBY is a very popular English anime, and so popular in fact, that it has been translated from English to Japanese!! "RWBY (pronounced "Ruby") is an American anime-influenced adult computer-animated web series created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. It is set in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (called "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to protect their world from monsters called Grimm." Just as an FYI, something funky was going on with our mic, but Barbara sounds perfect, so the episode does have a strange flow to it, but we couldn't pass up on the opportunity to release Barbara's thoughts on RWBY, Rooster Teeth, and her awesome career! I talk with Z and Kevin Zhang of Serenity Forge, which is here in Colorado. I met these fellas back at a Denver Comic Con a few years ago, and now they have found themselves in the business of publishing physical games. Most recently, they distributed Doki Doki Literature Club+ into Targets and Walmarts around the world. And they have plans for more projects like that in the future. Adam Kullberg is the Education Program Manager at Pop Culture Classroom. He joined the team in 2015, after serving as an outreach teacher and volunteer for the organization throughout 2014. Before that, he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and MA in English Literature from the University of North Texas. Since joining PCC, he has helped develop PCC's outreach programming, pop culture-based workshops, and curricula, including a range of educational programs at Denver Pop Culture Con offered each year to teachers and students of all ages. In his free time, he enjoys playing lacrosse and binging corny action movies. The need for innovative literacy education in Colorado inspired Pop Culture Classroom and its education programs. As teachers, artists, writers, parents, and all around pop culture activists, each of us has personal experience with the transformational power of comics and other pop culture media. We believe that literacy, creativity and creative thinking are essential abilities for our children as they prepare to navigate both the successes and challenges of life. Pop Culture Classroom was founded in 2010 as Comic Book Classroom, a Colorado charitable organization focused on enhancing and improving student's learning experience through the use of comic book media. At the same time, the founders of Comic Book Classroom also created the Denver Comic Con event. The STC curriculum has been offered by schools, educators, libraries, and community organizations all across Colorado and beyond. The curriculum has expanded to include a comprehensive collection of reading materials, instructional videos, interactive activities and arts-based handouts designed to help students investigate storytelling, build art and literacy skills, and eventually create their very own comics. Completed entries are then published in a class collection.* *On this episode of the podcast Joe invites long-time friend Adam Kullberg to the podcast to discuss his work with Pop Culture Classroom. Joe & Adam discuss the various mediums used to drive life lessons home for students, how we can continue to evolve our way of learning, and what's on the horizon in a post-COVID world. Welcome to Episode 159 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week, the Geeks (Jeff, Jake, Nate, Mitch and Matt Orrin) are back in the Quantum Realm to discuss all things geek. Denver Pop Culture Con (formerly Denver Comic Con) has just ended and Matt Orrin talks about some of the finer moments for him, such as seeing Dave Bautista, Tom Wilson, and Christopher Lloyd. The panels were fun and informative! We moved on to DC and started talking all kinds of news, such as Robert "shimmery vampire" Pattinson as the new Dark Knight. Hopefully, this one doesn't sparkle at night! Are they gonna start to connect DC properties to the DCU? This could help change the way actors take jobs and their contracts. Speaking of which, Swamp Thing got cancelled ONE WEEK after it premiered. Can you believe that? We don't know why but there is lots of false rumors spreading around. Good Omens is on Amazon and its hot! David Tennant is wonderful as Crowley and the interaction between him and Aziraphale, played by Michael Sheen, is delightful. If you aren't familiar with this book/show, check out both. You won't be disappointed. This leads us into talks about all of the streaming services available and their content. Who will survive the streaming service wars? Again, the Darkwing Duck origin episode of Duck Tales is discussed and it is STILL fabulous! Seriously, you'd be hard pressed to find a better written show. And then, much like our normal way of doing things we switch over to cars. Why? Well, some geeks love cards and Jake loves Fords. Whats your favorite Ford? You can send your feedback and show topic ideas to broadcastgeeks@gmail.com. Follow us on Twitter @broadcastgeeks. Please remember to subscribe, and review us, on iTunes and anywhere else you listen!
In this episode Jack and Sam spend so much time bullshittin' that they don't even talk about the movie they wanted to: Sam rambles about his first time at Denver Comic Con (now called Pop Culture Con, but Sam ain't about that), and Jack fills everyone in about the world of bodybuilding and how to shave your buddy's back. Don't Miss This Podcast!
We spend way too much time debating whether or not Arby’s is known just for their sauce or not. Tony has another weird dream. Nhat gives Tony his birthday gifts, which he naturally hates. I'll be officially debuting my book, Get Your Joy™, at Denver Comic Con 2019 (DCC19)! One of the joy builders in the book is called "Take a Break. Or Two. Or Three." The main idea behind this is twofold:If you aren't enjoying the journey, the destination won't matter. It's important to be present and give yourself lots of love, space, and time to rest, recharge, and fuel up before continuing to press forward.Science is now backing what we already know: burnout is real and taking breaks is necessary to get the results you want. In fact, people who actually take breaks and vacations get promoted faster and earn more money.Ultimately, what I'm saying is that taking life too seriously leads to misery. As much as everything matters, it also doesn't if your quality of life totally sucks! You won't be effective or joyful, and if you're neither, what's the point of working at all? Let's take a seriousness break and enjoy my interview on the Reel Nerds podcast from DCC18. We chat about my writing, finding inspiration, fun sci-fi things we like, and other nerdy stuff!
We will be tabling at Denver Pop Culture Con 2019! Woohoooo!!! What is Denver Pop Culture Con, you may ask? Held in Denver, Colorado, and formerly titled Denver Comic Con, DPCC is a 3-day family friendly pop culture convention that features some of the best in pop culture entertainment. This year, it runs from Friday May 31st - Sunday June 2nd at the Colorado Convention center. We'll be at booth CC11 promoting the show, selling special DIYA stickers, and geeking out with people about animation (of course!). Jess will also be selling some prints and commissions for those interested! To hear more details - including a special secret code for convention freebies that you won't want to miss - check out the audio recording! Let us know if you'll be there! And if you can't, never fear! You can check out our social channels during the convention for photo bombs and general convention shenanigans (@DIYAShow on Instagram and Twitter). And a post-convention blog will go up in June featuring photos from the trip, stories, and who knows what else!

David R Slayton grew up, as he puts, in a town where Norman Rockwell meets the Twilight Zone. That town was Guthrie, Oklahoma—and it’s place where David said finding fantasy novels was challenging and finding fantasy novels with diverse characters was downright impossible. So what else to do but write your own? The first attempt ran to 200,000 words. It was a bit unwieldy. Years later, David found himself in Denver and even later found Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. Now, David’s debut young adult fantasy, Ghost Dragon, will be published in January 2020 by Harmony Ink Press. On the podcast, David walks us through the long journey to publication, describes what he means about writing stories set in worlds without prejudice, and gives us the lowdown on a very cool charity project he runs every year around Halloween called Trick or Read. In addition to writing, David Slayton has taught workshops and appeared on panels at Denver Comic Con, the Pikes Peak Writers Conference, and the League of Utah Writers Quills Conference. By day he’s a software implementation consultant. David R Slayton's website Intro music by Moby Outro music by Dan-o-Songs
