In July 2025, a startup called Varda Space Industries raised $187 million to make drugs in orbit. They are not the only startup trying to make stuff in space. Starcloud - formerly called Lumen Orbit - raised $21 million to try and assemble a 5-gigawatt data center in space. And tech giants Elon and Bezos have been talking a great deal about putting AI data centers in space. A few people on the internet have riffed off those trends and ideas to also ask, “Why not do semiconductors in space too?”. Bezos himself said all the way back in 2016: “We can build gigantic chip factories in space”. Sure we can. But it's not going to be practical. Fabs hat uns für den zweiten Teil des Jahresrückblicks ein Intro gebastelt und baut hier mehr Nerdkultur ein, als ich mir hätte vorstellen können. Damit wird dann der Jahresrückblick auch fortgesetzt und mit den Serien beendet. Viel Spaß dabei!

Ein verspätetes Frohes Neues, euch allen! Jetzt wird hier erstmal über unsere, aber auch eure besten Filme aus 2025 geredet. Während dessen wird bei mir eine Rauchmelder-Prüfung durchgeführt und als das Piepen näher kam, habe ich den Mute-Button gesucht, aber nicht gefunden (ich nutze den aber auch nie). Wäre kein Problem gewesen die drei kleinen Piepser nachträglich zu entfernen, aber Heiko bringt es beim Reden ins Stocken und Fabs bezieht sich auch noch mal drauf, das habe ich das drin gelassen. Am Ende der Filme haben wir auch schon drei Stunden voll und so habe ich mir dann gedacht, dass ich beim Schneiden gleich die Aufnahme in zwei Folgen teile, wie schon so oft. Dabei haben wir Sanni doch gar nicht dabei. Wir sind aber nicht ganz ohne sie, denn sie hat uns Audionachrichten zu zwei Filmen und zwei Serien geschickt, auf die wir dann auch reagieren konnten. Fabs hatte dann noch eine schöne Idee für ein Intro und das habe ich dann auch noch mal davor geschnitten.

PREVIEW: Zero-G Fabs: Manufacturing Semiconductors in Weightlessness Guest: Bob Zimmerman Bob Zimmerman discusses a new company, which he believes is called Besar, that manufactures semiconductors in low Earth orbit using a zero-gravity environment. The core idea revolves around the reality that challenges like gravity, earthquakes, and air quality exist on Earth, making the weightless environment of space an exceptionally good environment for manufacturing chips. The company believes they can produce much better semiconductors in weightlessness than on Earth. They have signed a contract with SpaceX to utilize the Falcon 9 first stage booster, placing their manufacturing facility, called a "fab ship," on it. During flight, the Falcon 9 first stage experiences approximately five minutes in a vacuum superior to anything achievable on Earth, which the company intends to use to produce semiconductors. They plan to start launching these fab ships by year's end, with approximately 12 planned missions, making this a profit center for SpaceX.
