Dick Mills had just spoken a promise, a blessing, over me—that I have never forgotten, and I never will.

I re-read Isaiah 43.18-19 this morning and smiled as I thought of old prophet Dick Mills. Forty years ago, this great man prophesied over me with words from Isaiah. I've made many transitions since that time, some of them difficult, but I always knew God would “do something new.” I did not need to “ponder things of the past.” I could always hold my head high and walk confidently on “a roadway in the wilderness” and drink life-giving water from “rivers in the desert.” Thank you Jesus, and thank you Dick.

The BBC Radiophonic workshop was founded in 1958 by Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram. This group of experimental composers, sound engineers and musical innovators provided music for programmes including The Body in Question, Horizon, Quatermass, Newsround, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chronicle and Delia Derbyshire's iconic Doctor Who Theme before being shut down by Director General John Birt in 1998. Tying into the 2020 celebration of classic Prom concerts, this episode of Free Thinking is being rebroadcast It was recorded in 2014, as the Workshop prepared to release an album, and tour the UK, Matthew Sweet brought together Radiophonic Workshop members Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland, Roger Limb, Peter Howell, and Mark Ayres to reflect on the days and nights they spent in the workshop, coaxing ageing machines into otherworldly life, and pioneering electronic music. Also in the programme, producer and former drummer with The Prodigy Kieron Pepper, Oscar winning Gravity composer Steven Price, Vile Electrodes, and Matt Hodson, on the influence the Radiophonic Workshop had on them. What's happening in the future __________________________________________________ PROPHECY AND STEWARDSHIPWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW~ A MIRACLE PODCAST PRODUCTION ~ WHY PROPHECY IS IMPORTANT A prophet must monitor what's going on in his or her area of assignment. If the area of assignment is international, then the observation, of course, is international and encompasses geopolitical happenings. It is not always possible to know such information in the natural―even with the internet and social media―but it can be known supernaturally to those whom God chooses to reveal such happenings. This will include what is happening NOW … and what will happen in the FUTURE. A prophet must be in a state of readiness at all times: ready to hear … ready to question … ready to speak. Habakkuk lived in a period when his country had fallen from the heights to the depths with degradation in the legal system of the land. Remind yourself that this happened after Josiah's reforms. How quickly we are to go from boom to panic. Governments―because they are made up of people―can be bipolar as well. This reminds me of a poem I shared as part of my speech when graduating from engineering college and I was awarded the trophy for being the “Most Worthless Senior.” (Five years later, the Lord Jesus, Israel's Messiah, made me worthy―He became my worthiness―when I received Him as my Savior and Lord.) “Our system is depressive manic. It runs from boom and then to panic. In view of this it would be wise for government to stabilize. Knowing the need for both … stability and economic growth. And that constant, steady unemployment can often be a disappointment.” I'm not sure, but I think that was from J. Sullivan Edwards' book, Ride the Wild Horses. MONITOR Habakkuk is overtaken by the circumstances all around him. He thinks God has removed Himself from the affairs of man. Leaders are in control who do not serve God. The prophet says: “I will stand upon my watch, and position myself upon the tower, and will watch to see what God will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.”  ‒ Habakkuk 2:1 Let me ask you a question: “Are you standing upon YOUR watch?” Are you listening to what the LORD will say? Today―more than ever―people need a word from God. Yes, they need to be IN God's Word (reading and meditating), and they need the Word to be IN them … but they also need to hear specific rhemas―personal messages from God to them―directed by the Spirit of God in the timing of God. The man I respected most for always having a word from God for people was a man named Dick Mills. He was an humble servant of God. He gave me in the course of his lifetime several prophetic messages―including Words of Knowledge from the Holy Bible―that were “spot on” and everyone of them came to pass. He prophesied to me and told me that I would have a ministry like his which came to pass. We must monitor by knowing―keeping in touch―with what's going on around us. But more importantly we must monitor by “standing upon our watch” and waiting upon God to speak―to see what He will say to us―about the nation and for the nation … about people and for the people. MINISTER To minister is to serve. Just recently, a lady I have never met, contacted me by email. This lady had read my book, Prophecy, Transition & Miracles. She told me, “The Lord told me to tell you 'Keep your shoes clean.'” Now I know it must have been hard for this lady to say this. As a matter of fact she told me later she was afraid to tell me as it might offend me. What she did NOT know is that recently I purchased a new pair of inexpensive shoes to wear with khakis or Levis. I always try to keep my shoes shined and clean. However, a day or so before this lady sent the message to me I was looking at my new shoes and thinking, “I should clean them.” But … I decided to put it off. Well, when I received the lady's message (and knowing she didn't know anything about me or my new shoes) I decided to clean them. Wouldn't you know … the very next day I was in a very important meeting where the shoes were very visible and it was very important that they be perfectly clean. That may seem trifle but … it was IMPORTANT. And, it shows the importance of personal prophecy: NOT “kookie” stuff, but exact “laser directed” words from God that many times only the Lord knows what it is about. Personal ministry with “lasers of light” pinpointing in exactness the message from God for the people to whom you minister: those in your watch care or area of assignment. Daily, remember to ask God for discernment over people, things and situations. Not all that glitters is gold … and not all prophecies that come to YOU are from God. I have “tons” of prophecies that have been given to me through the years, but I have hung them on the wall “so to speak” until I either knew in my heart―or received valid confirmation―that they were from God. Just as we want to receive accurate words from God, so we have the responsibility to deliver accurate words to others in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. MANAGE Habakkuk managed his activities so that he had time―he took time―to wait upon God. He positioned himself―by schedule and activity―to watch and see what God would say to Him. The answer he received from God has helped people for over 2,500 years. A prophet must realize that he or she―even if delivering a message to one person―may be influencing nations and future generations. By God's grace, I have spoken words that launched people into powerful ministries that multiply further because of the right message at the right time. YOU are an instrument of God. Guard this privilege with all your might. Manage your time, your resources and even your recreation so that your assignment from God―the people assigned to your watch care―do not suffer. A shepherd tends to the flock by feeding, healing, guiding and protecting. But … the shepherd must stay strong himself to be in condition. Your body is NOT your own … you have been bought with a price: with the precious BLOOD of Messiah Jesus. Therefore, glorify God in your body … and that includes the mental part as well. It's the anointing that breaks the yoke. The Holy Spirit is God's agent on earth to supply the resurrection POWER of Christ. Honor the Holy spirit and He will honor you. Habakkuk received the message from God that made it possible for him to rise above the circumstances. It was this: “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.” ‒ Habakkuk 2:4 Much of the misunderstanding concerning prophecy has to do with the lack of understanding the historicity of prophecy (the time frame in which the prophecy was delivered) and the purpose of prophecy. We need to understand the different elements of prophecy and their functions, such as: Predictive prophecy. Office of the prophet. Gift of prophecy. PREDICTIVE PROPHECY Prophecies of old revealed in the Tanakh (the Hebrew Scriptures) may be categorized in two sections: "fulfilled" and "yet to be fulfilled." The former need no defense: their fulfillment in detail is proof of their validity.  Analysis of current geopolitical events and relationships seem to "escort" many of the remaining unfulfilled prophecies. It is here that quantum physics and the office of the prophet MAY become synergistic at times. You may study in detail about this here: Faith and Quantum Physics. OFFICE OF THE PROPHET The office of prophet and seer are generally synonymous; however, what most people—especially theologians—don't realize is that God is more than willing to SHOW His servants the road ahead. The Holy Spirit will guide you into ALL truth: spiritual, economic, relational and political truth. God many times will give a prophet a “feeling” or a vision that is panoramic and unfolding for cycles or events. Today―more than ever―people need a word from God. Yes, they need to be IN God's Word (reading and meditating), and they need the Word to be IN them … but they also need to hear specific rhemas―personal messages from God to them―directed by the Spirit of God in the timing of God. The man I respected most for always having a word from God for people was a man named Dick Mills. He was an humble servant of God. He gave me in the course of his lifetime several messages―verses from the Holy Bible―that were “spot on” and everyone of them came to pass. He prophesied to me and told me that I would have a ministry like his which came to pass. We must monitor by knowing―keeping in touch―with what's going on around us. But more importantly we must monitor by “standing upon our watch” and waiting upon God to speak―to see what He will say to us―about the nation and for the nation … about people and for the people. MINISTER To minister is to serve. Just recently, a lady I have never met, contacted me by email. This lady had read my book, Prophecy, Transition & Miracles. She told me, “The Lord told me to tell you 'Keep your shoes clean.'” Now I know it must have been hard for this lady to say this. As a matter of fact she told me later she was afraid to tell me as it might offend me. What she did NOT know is that recently I puchased a new pair of inexpensive shoes to wear with khakis or levis. I always try to keep my shoes shined and clean. However, a day or so before this lady sent the message to me I was looking at my new shoes and thinking, “I should clean them.” But … I decided to put it off. Well, when I received the lady's message (and knowing she didn't know anything about me or my new shoes) I decided to clean them. Wouldn't you know … the very next day I was in a very important meeting where the shoes were very visible and it was very important that they be perfectly clean. That may seem trifle but … it was IMPORTANT. And, it shows the importance of personal prophecy: NOT “kookie” stuff, but exact “laser directed” words from God that many times only the Lord knows what it is about. Personal ministry with “lasers of light” pinpointing in exactness the message from God for the people to whom you minister: those in your watchcare or area of assignment. Daily, remember to ask God for discernment over people, things and situations. Not all that glitters is gold … and not all prophecies that come to YOU are from God. I have “tons” of prophecies that have been given to me through the years, but I have hung them on the wall “so to speak” until I either knew in my heart―or received valid confirmation―that they were from God. Just as we want to receive accurate words from God, so we have the responsibility to deliver accurate words to others in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. MANAGE Habakkuk managed his activities so that he had time―he took time―to wait upon God. He positioned himself―by schedule and activity―to watch and see what God would say to Him. The answer he received from God has helped people for over 2,500 years. A prophet must realize that he or she―even if delivering a message to one person―may be influencing nations and future generations. By God's grace, I have spoken words that launched people into powerful ministries that multiply further because of the right message at the right time. YOU are an instrument of God. Guard this privilege with all your might. Manage your time, your resources and even your recreation so that your assignment from God―the people assigned to your watchcare―do not suffer. A shepherd tends to the flock by feeding, healing, guiding and protecting. But … the shepherd must stay strong himself to be in condition. Your body is NOT your own … you have been bought with a price: with the precious BLOOD of Messiah Jesus. Therefore, glorify God in your body … and that includes the mental part as well. It's the anointing that breaks the yoke. The Holy Spirit is God's agent on earth to supply the resurrection POWER of Christ. Honor the Holy spirit and He will honor you. Habakkuk received the message from God that made it possible for him to rise above the circumstances. The BBC Radiophonic workshop,opened in 1958 with an aim to experiment and produce original music for various iconic BBC programmes. It was shut down 40 years later by Director General John Birt. In an edition recorded just as the Workshop prepare to release a new album, and tour the UK, Matthew Sweet brings together Radiophonic Workshop members Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland, Roger Limb, Peter Howells, and Mark Ayres to reflect on the days and nights they spent in the workshop, coaxing ageing machines into otherworldly life, and pioneering electronic music.

The broadcaster and Doctor Who fan MATTHEW SWEET travels to The University of Manchester - home of Delia Derbyshire's private collection of audio recordings - to learn more about the wider career and working methods of the woman who realised Ron Grainer's original theme to Doctor Who. Delia's collection of tapes was, until recently, in the safekeeping of MARK AYRES, archivist for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Matthew meets up at Manchester University with Mark, along with Delia's former colleagues from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, BRIAN HODGSON and DICK MILLS - plus former 'White Noise' band member DAVID VORHAUS - to hear extracts from the archive, discuss their memories of Delia and the creative process behind some of her material. Her realisation of the Doctor Who theme is just one small example of her genius and we'll demonstrate how the music was originally created as well as hearing individual tracks from Delia's aborted 70's version. We'll also feature the make up tapes for her celebrated piece 'Blue Veils and Golden Sands', and hear Delia being interviewed on a previously 'lost' BBC recording from the 1960s. Matthew's journey of discovery will take in work with the influential poet Barry Bermange, as well as her 1971 piece marking the centenary of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. This Archive on 4 is brought up to date with an individual track from 'The Dance' from the children's programme 'Noah'. Recorded in the late 1960s this remarkable tape sounds like a contemporary dance track which wouldn't be out of place in today's most 'happening' trance clubs. Producer: Phil Collinge.

A special podcast episode recorded at Chicago TARDIS 2013 featuring a one-on-one interview with classic series sound designer Dick Mills, the "Podcast Playground" panel with Erika Ensign & Lynne M. Thomas of the Verity Podcast and Alex Kennard of the Reality Bomb Podcast, and a report from Gordon Dymowski on the charity auction.  

Dick Mills (born 1936) is a British sound engineer, specialising in  sound effects which he produced at the . Mills was one of the original staff at the Radiophonic Workshop, joining in 1958 as a technical assistant. At first he was employed to handle the hardware of the Workshop but soon found himself recording effects. Some of his earliest, uncredited sound work was on the 1958  science-fiction serial . Another of his prominent early recordings was the "'s Stomach" sound effect, a significant part of the popular . Although he recorded much in those early years, it is his later work on  for which he most remembered. In 1972, he took over from fellow BBC Radiophonic Workshop sound effects producer , whom he had sometimes previously assisted, and continued providing "special sound" for every episode of the programme, with the exception of two four-part stories, until it ended in 1989. He also provided special sound for the Doctor Who spin-off . As such, he has the distinction of having more on-screen credits than anyone else in the history of the series. Owing to his technical know-how, he managed to bring to the position new methods of recording sound effects quicker than before. Besides his sound effects on Doctor Who, he also produced and compiled the first of the programme's music compilations,  and . Over the years, many of his own sound effects have also appeared on various compilations. Other sound effects he provided included material for the cult series , produced in 1973 by then-Doctor Who producer , and also occasionally sounds for . Mills' work was acknowledged in a Doctor Who documentary broadcast on  in 1977. The same year, he appeared on the BBC's children's magazine programme  to demonstrate how some of the Doctor Who effects were realised and how children could make their own sound effects at home. He also appeared in the 2004 BBC Radiophonic Workshop  documentaryAlchemists of Sound. He is also the author of many books on  and tropical fish, as well as a former editor of The Aquarist and Pondkeeper magazine and a member of the Federation of British Aquatic Societies Council

I was lucky enough to be in the audience for another of the BFI's special events to celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who. Thanks to a spare ticket from my friend Rebecca we were treated to a big screen showing of Doctor Who: Remembrance of the Daleks and interviews with John Leeson, Mike Tucker, Dick Mills and a main panel discussion panel with Silvester Mc Coy, Sophie Aldred and Ben Aaronovitch. Setting the wayback machine all the way… um, back… to Radio Free Skaro #230 you’ll remember the lads had the Randomizer throw them a curve ball in the shape of Dick Mills as a miniscope subject. As those familiar with the sound design of Doctor Who are aware, Mills is the most-credited person on the show thanks to his long tenure with the Radiophonic Workshop. Where to begin?
