Directed by two-time Oscar® nominated filmmaker Steve James (HOOP DREAMS, LIFE ITSELF, ABACUS: ), A COMPASSIONATE SPY is a gripping real-life spy thriller about controversial Manhattan Project physicist Ted Hall, who infamously provided nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union, told through the perspective of his loving wife Joan, who protected his secret for decades. Recruited in 1944 as an 18-year-old Harvard undergraduate to help Robert Oppenheimer and his team create a bomb, Hall was the youngest physicist on the Manhattan Project, and didn't share his colleagues' elation after the successful detonation of the world's first atomic bomb. Concerned that a U.S. post-war monopoly on such a powerful weapon could lead to nuclear catastrophe, Hall began passing key information about the bomb's construction to the Soviet Union. After the war, he met, fell in love with, and married Joan, a fellow student with whom he shared a passion for classical music and socialist causes -- and the explosive secret of his espionage. The pair raised a family while living under a cloud of suspicion and years of FBI surveillance and intimidation. A COMPASSIONATE SPY reveals the twists and turns of this real-life spy story, its profound impact on nuclear history, and the couple's remarkable love and life together during more than 50 years of marriage. Award winning filmmaker Steve James (Abacus: Small Enough To Jail, City So Real, America To Me) joins us for a conversation on the fraught political circumstances that brought Ted Hall to make such a radical decision, how Joan and Ted navigated their post war life, and why having a more nuanced understanding of the Cold War and nuclear destruction may save the world from an unimaginable conflagration. Never before has a documentary been more misremembered than this one. Bob and Drew sat down to get reacquainted with what we thought was going to be an hour of Allen Iverson doing sick alley-oop dunks and 30 foot jump shots. We got very little of that, and more about race relations in Hampton, Virginia. As it turns out, Hoop Dreams director Steve James’s 30 for 30 “No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson” is LITERALLY about a trial. Allen Iverson has always been a spectacular basketball player, but after a bowling alley brawl in 1993 involving friends and teammates, Iverson suddenly became a centerpiece for generations of racial injustice in Hampton, Virginia. Teenage Allen Iverson was actually tried as an adult over some vague teenage bullshit, and the ramifications are affecting to this day. Was Iverson a troublemaker that got what he deserved, or was this a bunch of racist Hampton crab shit? Director Steve James is also from Hampton and his dad is really into crabs. The Crabbers that is. It’s a Hampton thing. Let us tell you all about it. Let us give you crabs. Keep on Doccin’® www.documenteerspodcast.com

Chicago’s Oak Park and River Forest High School’s (OPRF) student population encompasses a racial, economic and cultural mix that reflects the nation as a whole. Located in a mostly affluent, progressive suburb, the school attracts families of all races and means, many of whom make great sacrifices to secure their children a place there. But even in this diverse and liberal community, ensuring an educational experience that equally benefits all students poses challenges for the school’s dedicated and well-meaning teachers, administrators and parents. In the multipart unscripted documentary series AMERICA TO ME, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interupters, Life Itself, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail) and his team follow a diverse selection of the school’s 3,400 students, including artists, athletes, scholars, underachievers and iconoclasts, to present an indelible account of their dreams, fears, triumphs and aspirations. Posing complex and controversial questions, the film wrestles with crucial issues, including the effects of race and privilege on education as seen through the eyes of young Americans on the precipice of adulthood. Candid and relatable portraits of 12 students who are just beginning to come into their own provide moving insights into the teenage search for personal identity in today’s world. Director Steve James joins us with his impressions on the state of secondary education, how best to facilitate better outcomes for students and the role race place in achieving success.
