Aliens are back on the radar after a US Congressional hearing in the summer that featured former intelligence officer, David Grusch. The US Air Force veteran was once part of a task force created to look into what used to be called UFOs. Mr Grusch gave evidence that caused a sensation in America, claiming that the US military had, for decades, been in possession of crashed UFOs and 'non-human biologics'. His shocking claims were evidence that, whatever their accuracy, both created and reflected a growing and serious debate - from astrophysicists and astrobiologists to policymakers about what if anything, is out there. Anything alive and anything civilised. So, as 2023 turns into 2024, what is the state of our understanding about whether or not we are alone in space? David Aaronovitch explores the history of UFOs stretching back to the 1940s and discusses whether intelligent life exists beyond Earth. David Aaronovitch talks to: Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, British space scientist and science educator Garrett Graff, Journalist and historian. Author of ‘UFO: The Inside Story of the U.S. Government's Search for Alien Life Here ― and Out There'. Scooping Interstellar Fragments from the Ocean FloorAlbert Einstein famously argued in a letter to the physicist Max Born in December 1926 that God does not play dice. The letter referred to the probabilistic nature of Quantum Mechanics but it can also be interpreted more broadly as if nature does not make random choices. In fact, it is the duty of a scientist to make sense of nature's choices. Otherwise, reality looks random to those who do not understand it. Weather was perceived this way before satellite and ground-based data allowed modern science to make weather forecasts a week in advance. The fundamental insight we learned as an advanced scientific civilization is that we should be guided by evidence rather than prejudice. The range of possibilities, as often imagined in mathematics or science fiction stories, is far greater and sometimes has no overlap with what is actually realized in nature. On April 6, 2022, the United States Space Command tweeted a formal letter confirming that a meteor identified in the CNEOS catalog by my student Amir Siraj and me in 2019 as originating from outside the Solar system based on its high speed, is indeed interstellar. The meteor detection on January 8, 2014 predated the first reported interstellar object, `Oumuamua, by almost four years and should be recognized as the first interstellar object ever discovered. The meteor paper was initially doubted because the uncertainties in the velocity measurements were classified. The release of the confirmation letter is a watershed moment in which the government assists scientific progress by confirming the interstellar origin of this so-called CNEOS-2014–01–08 meteor at the 99.999% confidence. Our discovery of an interstellar meteor heralds a new research frontier, in which the Earth serves as a fishing net for massive interstellar objects. As a result of encountering Earth and rubbing against its atmosphere, an interstellar object burns up in a bright fireball. This fireball is detectable by satellites or ground-based sensors even for relatively small interstellar objects like CNEOS-2014–01–08, which was about a meter in size and created a fireball carrying a percent of the energy of the Hiroshima bomb. This size scale is a hundred times smaller than `Oumuamua, which was discovered by the Pan STARRS telescope through its reflection of sunlight. This alternative detection method allows existing survey telescopes to discover only objects larger than a football field, within the orbit of the Earth around the Sun.There should be a million objects as small as CNEOS-2014–01–08 within that volume for every `Oumuamua-size object, but only a tiny fraction of them is seen as meteors because of the small size of our “fishing net”, the Earth. The situation is analogous to finding many more small fish than whales in the ocean. But we should also keep in mind that most meteors originate from the Solar system, but the interstellar ones can be flagged by their high speeds. The interstellar meteor discovery is very important from another perspective. One can imagine a billion dollar mission to land on an interstellar object like `Oumuamua and return a sample of it to Earth, similar to the OSIRIS-REx mission that landed on the asteroid Bennu and will return material from it in September 2023. But at a cost that is ten thousand times smaller, one could scoop fragments left over from an interstellar meteor and study them in our laboratories. The debris from CNEOS-2014–01–08 landed on the ocean floor near Papua New Guinea and it is possible to scoop them with a magnet. Once collected, we could place our hands around sizeable chunks of interstellar matter and examine its composition and nature. The ocean on site is a couple of kilometers deep and the impact region is uncertain to within ten kilometers. But an expedition to explore this region for meteor fragments is feasible and we are currently engaged in designing it.The fundamental question is whether any interstellar meteor might indicate a composition that is unambiguously artificial in origin? Better still, perhaps some technological components would survive the impact. My dream is to press some buttons on a functional piece of equipment which was manufactured outside of Earth. This gives a whole new meaning to a “fishing expedition”; in this case, of extraterrestrial equipment. In February 1954, just 14 months before he died, Einstein wrote a letter to the physicist David Bohm, in which he stated: “If God created the world, his primary concern was certainly not to make its understanding easy for us.” I wonder whether our expedition to Papua New Guinea might replace the word `God' in Einstein's statements by the term `an advanced scientific civilization'.ABOUT THE AUTHORAvi Loeb is the head of the Galileo Project, founding director of Harvard University's — Black Hole Initiative, director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and the former chair of the astronomy department at Harvard University (2011–2020). Is there life out there? This is the question astronomers and astrophysicists have been exploring for decades.  In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Dr. Avi Loeb, Harvard's top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization. In today's conversation we're exploring the question, is there life out there? with Dr. Loeb, who is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University, chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, founding director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative, and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. In Dr. Loeb's new book, Extraterrestrial, the First Signs of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, we learn about Oumuamua, the first known interstellar object detected passing through the Solar System. But this book isn't really about Oumuamua.  It's a story about why curiosity is essential to science and how curiosity gets squelched when the scientific process is influenced by the pressure for research dollars.  It's also a story about the challenge of shifting paradigms and how our first response, both in the scientific community and in the world at large is NOT to wonder and be amazed by new information, but to push new information away and to resist data - especially if the data itself defies what we think we know. The “system” that we call science is competitive. The pressure to be first for the sake of credit, ego, and money often causes researchers to sew up conclusions in record time, without the necessary curiosity and willingness to entertain new possibilities.  New data has to stand the test of time and repetition.  It also has to be measured against what we already know with the willingness to entertain new possibilities with curiosity. A system that is run by money and the fear of losing funding perverts our interpretation of the data. It also causes a collective lack of trust in science and increases the time it takes to implement new, innovative solutions in collective systems, such as the education or health care system.  When we liberate curiosity and knowledge from the pressure to be first or right in order to secure funding for more research, we increase the possibility that we will find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today. Join us as Dr. Loeb explores, with curiosity, what is out there?  Dr. Avi Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University. He received a PhD in Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel at age 24 (1980-1986), led the first international project supported by the Strategic Defense Initiative (1983-1988), and was subsequently a long-term member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1988-1993). It is the most fundamental question of humanity: are we alone? Are we the only intelligent life in the Universe? The answer, whether it is yes, or no, has profound implications on every aspect of our lives. And yet, until very recently, the scientific community at large has refused to officially pursue the answer to this question. My guest today is no stranger to controversy and not afraid to ask the question and to give his answer. Professor Avi Loeb is a Harvard astrophysicist and arguably one of the world's most famous scientists today. In his 2021 book "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth", he proposes that the interstellar object Oumouamoua, which passed through our solar system in 2017, may indeed be the creation of an alien intelligence. His book became an immediate New York Times bestseller and caused a huge stir in the media and the scientific community. Professor Loeb is the author of five books and over 800 scientific papers. In 2012 Time magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people in space. Professor Loeb is the Frank B. Baird Jr. professor of science at Harvard University, where he is also director of the Black Hole Initiative and the Institute for Theory and Computation and has worked on many advances in space and astrophysics, producing pioneering and provocative research on black holes, gamma-ray bursts and the early universe. “It would be arrogant to think we're alone in the Universe,” says Harvard Professor Avi Loeb, theoretical astrophysicist. His conjecture on the anomalous, shiny, elongated space object (dubbed “Oumuamua”, Hawaiian for “scout”) that wandered through our inner solar system in 2017 fit the evidence, yet stirred up quite the controversy. It looked and behaved not like an asteroid or cement, but a solar light sail, just as we'd design for a space probe. He details why in his book, Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth. “We should not rule out technology from an advanced, extraterrestrial civilization just because the notion is unpopular among the academic community,” he argues. This did lead to private funding for Avi's “Galileo Project” named for that other daring astronomer. We talk about new strategies to detect life in the Cosmos, the goals and hopes for his project, the role and limits of science, what we know and don't know, his philosophy of life, tackling the big questions, the impact on society's advancement, the filmmakers interested in his work, and more. Three astronomers in the audience pose their questions and comments, including one who worked on the Hubble Telescope.

In December 2012, Time magazine selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space. In 2015, Loeb was appointed as the science theory director for the Breakthrough Initiatives of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. In 2018, he attracted media attention for suggesting that alien space craft may be in our solar system, using the anomalous behavior of ʻOumuamua' as an example. In 2019, and together with his Harvard undergraduate student, Amir Siraj, Loeb reported discovering a meteor that potentially originated outside the Solar System. Avi wrote and published two books in 2021, Life in the Cosmos, with Manasvi Lingam, and Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth.

Dr. Avi Loeb is the most credential scientist and astronomer ever to say that we have been visited by something outside of our galaxy that is alien in nature. In 2021, Professor Loeb published a book called Extraterrestrial, The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth. For me, the ideas shared in this book can be a game changer for humanity. This time, Professor Loeb tells us why you can't use the internet without using quantum mechanics, and about the connection between theoretical physics and Bernie Madoff. Also, if you have been paying attention to UFOs, Dr. Loeb unpacks what he thinks the US government's latest disclosures on the existence of UFOs really mean. All these and more on this episode, so stay tuned to the end. Dr. Avi Loeb on Letting the Scientists Handle Science When asked whether he had a particular though he'd like to share, Professor Loeb remarks that he wishes that these unidentified phenomena in the sky be explored through scientific experiments.  There have been a lot of people giving their thoughts on the matter, but they're simply not qualified to give such statements. While data might be sensitive and are often classified, at the very least have someone with a scientific background deliver the explanation to such events. Rather than a politician who is not equipped to assess the nature of these phenomena, it's better to have an expert digest the information and deliver it in a concise manner. “These are serious people and they had access to the classified information, they talk about it seriously. But they cannot really assess the nature of this phenomenon, and they were trained as either politicians or administrators. When you go to a shoe maker, you don't expect the shoe maker to make you a cake. I mean, it makes no sense for them to make statements that are scientific.” – Dr. Avi Loeb   The Stigma and Taboo of Anomalies Regarding the UFO sighting report, Professor Loeb comments that there could be a lot more that have not been reported. This is because of the stigma of bringing up UFOs or certain unusual phenomenon. In this day and age, it's almost seen as a taboo to discuss such things. Professor Loeb finds it strange that it is the case. For some reason, anomalous evidence is unpopular, almost to the point of being shunned. Though if you look at the history of science, these anomalous evidences are what brought a lot of progress in different fields. “Why is anomalous evidence so unpopular? To me, it's really strange, because if you look at the history of science, most of the progress was a result of experimental anomalies. We saw something that we didn't expect, we learn something new about nature. What you need to do, of course, is to verify that the evidence is robust. If it's robust, then nature's telling you, you didn't really understand me. Here is something new that you have to figure out.” – Dr. Avi Loeb Quantum Mechanics Professor Loeb shares that it was the same before with Quantum Mechanics. Nobody really expected it, and it was something that was discovered through experiments. Although scientists like Albert Einstein resisted the notion at first. He even sought out to disprove it at some point. Yet today, we build new technology and instruments that are based on these principles, particularly in communication. We might not fully understand it yet, but it shouldn't stop us from exploring these anomalous behaviors and find out more about what nature has to offer. “Quantum mechanics is definitely a facet of reality. We know that we use it and so forth, but we don't fully understand it. And nature is under no obligation to make itself agree with our preconceptions.

Dr. Mann also talked about how prevalent anxiety was, and perhaps still is, among people who are unsure of what awaits them now that we are hopefully seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. In this episode, High Society with Paxton Quigley speaks with one of the most prestigious astronomers and astrophysicists of our time: Dr. Abraham Loeb of Harvard University. Dr. Loeb believes that we on earth very likely have been visited by aliens. He cites one example when a cigar-shaped object flew past Earth in 2017. Loeb goes into detail in this fascinating interview. He also wrote an informative book on the subject called Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth.

Prof. Loeb informs of the scientific community's reluctance to embrace UFO research. The U.S. government's intelligence community released its report about UFOs on June 25, 2021 (it was actually an analysis of many reports). And prior to this, our government had revived its special task force on UFOs. But what about our scientific community? According to Professor Avi Loeb, a professor in and the former chair of the Department of Astronomy at Harvard University, the scientific community has been cool to explore UFOs and research this fascinating and mysterious topic. Why you may ask, as did we? Because of the risks involved. While scientists have researched the dark matter, the taboo and the potential for ridicule surrounding UFOs has, generally speaking, kept away from delving deep into the subject of UFOs. Professor Loeb is the Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative and a former member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) at the White House. He has authored four books and some 700 research articles. His latest book is Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth. It was published in January of this year. Avi Loeb is author of the book “Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth”.  It's a story you can hardly believe, once you hear it.  But here it is -- the story of the day in 2017 when telescopes around the world started tracking an object in our solar system.  It was moving in such a way that scientists around the world came to the same, startling conclusion:  It was an extraterrestrial spaceship.  Avi Loeb is a professor of the Harvard Astronomy Department.  He is also a member of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (which is a collaboration of Harvard College Observatory and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.  Professor Loeb received a PhD in plasma physics at age 24 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1986) and was subsequently a long-term member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1988-1993), where he started to work in theoretical astrophysics. In 1993 he moved to Harvard University where he was tenured three years later.  He is now the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science and former chair of the department. He also holds a visiting professorship at the Weizmann Institute of Science and a Sackler Senior Professorship by special appointment in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University. In this episode, Michelle and Joe interview Ralph Blumenthal, 45-year New York Times contributor and author of The Believer: Alien Encounters, Hard Science, and the Passion of John Mack (which inspired one of our more popular recent blogs). They talk about John Mack: legendary Harvard professor who did breathwork with Stan Grof at Esalen and became interested in the mystery of alien abduction, which led him to write 2 bestselling books, appear on Oprah (who is probably an alien*), become a pioneer in the world of alien abductions, and die while immersed in afterlife studies, only to reportedly visit friends later on. Mack's notoriety came from trusting the stories he was hearing, trying to help people make sense of it all, and taking a big interest in how these experiences seemed to transform so many of the abductees. Sounds a lot like powerful psychedelic experiences and integration work leading towards growth, doesn't it? So sit back, pause that X-Files episode, light one up on this high holiday, and get really deep into the world of aliens. Learn about the government's secret Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, the Ariel school incident, Avi Loeb’s Oumuamua theory, out-of-body experiences, shapeshifters, and more! Ponder how Blumenthal "accidentally" leaves questions unanswered about the government experimenting with DMT as a way of communicating with aliens. Contemplate why the government is suddenly so forthcoming with UFO data. Think about how today is 420 and this is episode 240... The truth is out there, folks.  *This viewpoint is not that of Psychedelics Today, but merely of this high Show Notes writer. Notable Quotes On Mack doing breathwork with Stan Grof: “He was awakened to a different world, a spiritual world, a world of other realities than the one he was familiar with, and as I say in my book, he said, ‘Stan Grof opened up my psyche and the UFOs flew in.’”  “It’s no spoiler to say that my book does not provide the answer to the mystery of alien abduction, and I acknowledge that. I shed some light on it, perhaps, and what I like to say is that at least I’m comfortable saying that I know what it isn’t. It’s not mental illness, it’s not hoaxes (by and large), it’s not fabrication, it’s not the delusion of crowds. It’s something else. It’s something that is very real to a lot of people from different walks of life [and] different ages, and there really is no good explanation for what has happened to these people.”  “What do you say about the 2-year old children who tell these stories? You know, ‘Little man fly me up in the sky.’ ‘I go up in the sky.’ These 2-year-old kids: have they read UFO books? Are they influenced by UFO movies?” “Skeptics have not taken the time to read the literature. They don’t know the cases. So all they can do is say, ‘Ah, that’s ridiculous.’ Of course it’s ridiculous! We all agree it’s ridiculous. We all agree it’s not possible. ...We all agree that these stories that people are telling are not possible in our reality. They’re completely crazy. And yet, there’s no easy way to explain them away.” Links Ralphblumenthal.com The Believer: Alien Encounters, Hard Science, and the Passion of John Mack, by Ralph Blumenthal NYtimes.com: Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. K2-18 B, an earth-like planet with water vapour is spotted 111 light years away. An interstellar object christened Oumuamua flies through our solar system exhibiting characteristics never seen before in an asteroid. Scientists discover intriguing radio wave emissions coming from Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the sun. These are just some of a growing number of observations that have scientists excited about proving the existence of alien life. Statistical probabilities support this view - the Kepler Space Telescope has identified billions of planets theoretically capable of supporting life. To meaningfully advance the science of astrobiology humanity needs to abandon the longstanding and pervasive view that we are alone in the universe. Skeptics say that given the immense age of the observable universe there should be some evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations, but instead all we hear and see is silence. These same scientists argue that the ability of a planet to make the jump from inanimate matter to life - known as abiogenesis - and then to stay alive and become intelligent - requires highly unlikely transitions. Earth and humans are special. Our existence represents an incredible fluke and the statistical probability of it happening elsewhere is all but impossible. In sum, we are alone. Podcast: Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas (LS 69 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: 131 | Avi Loeb on Taking Aliens SeriouslyPub date: 2021-01-25The possible existence of technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations — not just alien microbes, but cultures as advanced (or much more) than our own — is one of the most provocative questions in modern science. So provocative that it's difficult to talk about the idea in a rational, dispassionate way; there are those who loudly insist that the probability of advanced alien cultures existing is essentially one, even without direct evidence, and others are so exhausted by overblown claims in popular media that they want to squelch any such talk. Astronomer Avi Loeb thinks we should be taking this possibility seriously, so much so that he suggested that the recent interstellar interloper `Oumuamua might be a spaceship built by aliens. That got him in a lot of trouble. We talk about the trouble, about `Oumuamua, and the attitude scientists should take toward provocative ideas.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Abraham (Avi) Loeb received his Ph.D. in plasma physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Oteil & Mike welcome Avi Loeb, Harvard Professor of Science and Chair of the Department of Astronomy. On today's episode, Avi explains his theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star, his philosophy around science, and his views on how the academic and scientific community should approach important but taboo topics. You can learn more about Avi on his website here and pre-order his new book - Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth - here.  Abraham (Avi) Loeb is the Frank B. Loeb wrote 8 books and over 750 papers on a wide range of topics, including black holes, the first stars, the search for extraterrestrial life and the future of the Universe. He had been the longest serving Chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy (2011-2020), Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative (2016-present) and Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (2007-present) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics . He serves as Chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies (2018-present) and is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics. Loeb is a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) at the White House and a member of the Advisory Board for "Einstein: Visualize the Impossible" of the Hebrew University. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative (2016-present) and serves as the Science Theory Director for all Initiatives of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. Paul Davies is an astrophysicist and astrobiologist whose book "The Eerie Silence" is an exploration of the search for intelligent life in the universe. But what is “life,” and what is “intelligence?” And what is the likelihood of life forming on other planets? And if it did, how would we know?
