It is not often that a film captures some of the most tender moments of a family's experience and shares the love and lessons from a beloved man at the end of his life. Ondi Timoner didn't set out to make this film; what she intended was to capture the last days of her father's life. But when she reviewed the hours of film from those last 15 days, and created a 30-minute compilation to share as a remembrance, people who saw it were so touched by the experience that Ondi realized a longer film was about to be born. Ondi and I discuss: What is the End of Life Option Act in CA? Why did Eli Timoner choose “death with dignity”? What was the trajectory of his life and how did he revise his understanding of “success”? How did this experience transform those around him? What can we all take away from Eli's living and his dying?

The film tells the story of music legend Little Richard, combining a wealth of his archival and performance footage to reveal the true Black queer origins of rock n' roll. As the icon's story is unspooled, so too are the contradictions between his life and music, as he gave the world what he was never able to give himself. Eli Timoner lived a life founded on love. As a result, long after an accidental stroke forced him into retirement, he was celebrated by his former workers. And when he died aged 92, on 3rd March 2021, he did so, surrounded by his family. Last Flight Home, a documentary by Eli's daughter Ondi, tells the story of his last days. But more than that, it relates how Eli chose the date of his passing, something he was able to do through California's End of Life Option Act. In this moving and poignant episode of Factual America, Ondi joins Matthew Sherwood to discuss the film, her father, family, and how her experience of his dying and death has made her an activist in support of the right to end one's own life. Ondi speaks frankly about her fears when Eli told her that he wished to die, and how filming him – something she did with his blessing - helped her come to terms with what was happening. She reflects on the differences of opinion that existed within her family over Eli's decision before they came together to see the world anew. She also shares how she believes Eli continues to watch over his family today. Eli's story is not an easy one. But neither is it one sided. As Matthew and Ondi's conversation makes clear, loss is accompanied by grace, beauty, and good memory. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “[Dad] said to me... Ondi, would you rather know the day I'm going to die? Or would you rather get a call in the middle of the night? And it's true, it really allowed us all to prepare, and to plan, and to have closure, and to be able to celebrate, even, his life. And for him, it was like wind in a sail.” – Ondi Timoner

This might be one of the most important columns that I have ever written. I wrote this, and created the accompanying podcast, because I want to help people deal with the most momentous decision that anyone can make. In the early 1980s, I was at the very beginning of my rabbinical career. I was serving a congregation in Miami, and I visited one of our congregants in the local hospital. His name was Eli TImoner. My guest is Rabbi Rachel Timoner, the senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, New York. She tells the story of her father, and of the movie, "Last Flight Home," which her sister, filmmaker Ondi Timoner directed. It is a documentary about Eli TImoner's decision that he wanted to end his life.

Yet it was immediately and rightly hailed as a classic film about rock music, the nature of genius and selling out, becoming a cult classic for audiences far outside the two bands' pre-existing fandom. This week, Ewan from (Don't) Listen to This returns - you have to remind him about his own podcast, he does forget things - to discuss Timoner's fascinating career, how the film's take on the record industry holds up in a very different landscape nearly twenty years later, and whether it's so bad to sell out anyway. They discuss two recent films, beginning with a Don't Worry Darling review. **SPOILER ALERT** from 11:01 they move into spoiler territory, so skip to 18:36 if you'd like to avoid that. They then discuss The Woman King, as well as the winner of the Sight and Sound poll of the top 100 films of all time, Jeanne Dielman; why awards matter, the sense and nonsense of making lists of favourite films, and whether the film industry is making advances where gender parity is concerned. Mark Kermode is film critic for The Observer, co-presenter of BBC Radio 4's Screenshot alongside Ellen E Jones, host of his own film music programme on Scala Radio, and co-presenter of Kermode and Mayo's Take podcast. When your dad — who is also your best friend and your family's source of inspiration — announces that he has made the decision to die, the immediate reaction is shock and revulsion. But, after careful consideration and discussion, it became clear to the Timoner family that paterfamilias Eli, who had been battling very severe illness and a rapidly deteriorating quality of life, was ready to take this final step in his life's journey. In “Last Flight Home”, her shattering, deeply moving and, ultimately, spiritually restorative new documentary, acclaimed filmmaker Ondi Timoner (“DIG!”, “We Live in Public”) embraces her most challenging and personal project by documenting her father's last 15 days of life. Ondi joined Ken on “Top Docs” to discuss what it was like to experience this devastating loss while, at the same time, “quarterbacking” her father's care and orchestrating the shooting and editing of this extraordinary portrait of an exceptional man. How did Ondi go from iPhone recordings of her dad to making a full-blown feature doc — and how did she ensure that everyone in her family, especially her dad, was supportive of it? How does California's End of Life Option law work, and how has it changed since the film was made? What does Ondi mean when she describes this as “the greatest experience of my life”, and what does she hope the film will accomplish? Join us for this intimate conversation. You'll begin to understand why Eli's “last flight home” is one more leg on a journey that goes on and on. “Last Flight Home” is currently in limited theatrical release and will be released by MTV Documentary Films at a date to be announced.   Hidden Gem: Keep On Keepin' On   Follow on twitter: @InterloperFilms @topdocspod   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Eli Timoner, who founded Air Florida, had a picture-perfect life, then suffered a stroke at age 53. His health deteriorated so much that he sought aid-in-dying drugs. He's the focus of the film “Last Flight Home.” Thanks to the #MeToo movement, several Hollywood figures are on trial right now, including Kevin Spacey, Danny Masterson, and Harvey Weinstein. Anna Voloshyna's new cookbook, “Budmo!: Recipes from a Ukrainian Kitchen,” celebrates Eastern European cuisine and Ukraine's identity. As the first Chinese American movie star in Hollywood, Anna May Wong made more than 60 films, but was never cast as the lead. That changed when she paved a way for herself in Great Britain.

Docn' - A Celebration of the Music Documentary

In 2003 director/producer/writer Ondi Timoner posed the following question to a then-theoretical audience: would anyone ever possibly be interested in the travails of two similarly heady and ambitious (and pretty fresh) psych-influenced ‘90s bands meeting in some strange middlespace of warm recognition and mutual respect before taking deeply dark and contested divergent journeys? The answer is ‘YES'!.' Dig! is a documentary about the muddled relationship between alternative radio darlings The Dandy Wharhols and the more prolific/scattered Brian Jonestown Massacre. The movie reveals an excellent set of contrasts, with one band seemingly on a collision course with stardom (but at what creative cost?) and the other pulling deeper into violence and obscurity as if change the subject. Us three found Dig! to be enlightening and depressing - though for different reasons than when we first saw it - and that alone necessitates this reevaluation.

Long before COVID-19, another pandemic was raging across the American landscape, penetrating all age groups, races and socio-economic classes. The cause: opioids. The culprit: Purdue Pharmaceutical and the company’s deceitful approach to lure in and hook patients. COMING CLEAN, Ondi Timoner’s new documentary, examines opioid addiction through the eyes of those affected and political leaders, as they come together to bring the profiteers to justice. Timoner deeply engages us by weaving in personal stories of addicts and their families struggling to overcome this painful addiction, sometimes with success but often with devastating and heart-wrenching consequences. COMING CLEAN presents a clear case against the perpetrators, including how they incentivized physicians to overprescribe opioids. In a hopeful turn, we witness the alliances built between addicts in recovery and policymakers as they work to remove the stigmas surrounding this addiction and impact laws and industries to bring necessary change in communities. A thought-provoking film on the state of our country and the current political landscape. Director Ondi Timoner (DIG!, We Live in Public, JUNGLETOWN) joins us to talk about the corrosive impact of the opioid crisis, the devastating impact it has had on families, communities and our vital institutions and who has been most responsible for this scourge.

Director Ondi Timoner is hoping to change the way we view the opioid crisis with her new documentary Coming Clean. Coming Clean starts at the roots of addiction and flowers out to show us that people do recover from addiction and that the opioid crisis is far from over despite it falling from the headlines as COVID-19 flooded media coverage. The opioid crisis is in many ways a manufactured crisis, one fostered by pharmaceutical companies who benefitted from the tragedy of people becoming addicted to pain medication. The other profiteers were prisons and the prison industrial complex who rallies against efforts to reform the way our system handles drug arrests. Ondi Timoner was our guest on WKEI's Noon Hour on Friday.

Ondi is a Floridian, born in Miami, but she studied film, literature, and theater at Yale University. Her 2004 documentary Dig! made waves on the indie circuit, winning her the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Dig! followed two indie bands — The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols — on a journey that would bring art and commerce to collision points. She then directed Join Usbefore returning to Sundance with 2009’s documentary We Live in Public, about the work of Josh Harris, an “internet visionary” and dot-com entrepreneur who was one of the most prominent people to sacrifice his privacy and peace for a very public internet life. We Live in Public also took home the Grand Jury Prize, making her the sole director to do it twice. This year, though, she’s releasing her first narrative feature, Mapplethorpe, a look at the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989. The movie that Ondi chose to discuss this week is Alex Garland's Ex Machina. Based on her work with Josh Harris, Ondi has some fascinating things to say about the terrifying rise of A.I. and how we will inevitably be overtaken by machines. She elaborates on shooting her latest feature, Mapplethorpe, in just 19 days and how that frenetic energy seeped into the film - which is a good thing. Ondi reveals that for her, behind every creation there must be love. And lastly, she discusses the role of the director, as conductor, and the necessity of collaboration with the many departments on a film. You can watch Mapplethorpe in theaters now. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch Ex Machina on Netflix. With April Wolfe and Ondi Timoner. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters on Twitter or Facebook. From the early '70s until his untimely death at age 42, "Mapplethorpe," directed by Ondi Timoner, explores the intersection of Robert Mapplethorpe's art and sexuality, his struggle for mainstream recognition, and, looming above it all, the specter of the emerging AIDS crisis. Featuring Matt Smith ("Doctor Who," "The Crown") and Marianne Rendón, the biopic offers a nuanced portrait of an artist at the height of his craft and of the self-destructive impulses that threaten to undermine it all.
