Welcome back to THE IAS COMPANION. Follow us on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@IASCompanion. Today, we will explore the concept of attitude change, a critical topic in social psychology. Attitude change refers to the process by which the direction or intensity of an individual's or group's existing attitudes are altered. This concept is essential for understanding how human behavior can be influenced in contexts such as persuasion, marketing, and social influence. Factors that drive attitude change include the nature of the pre-existing attitude and the functions it serves, such as fulfilling psychological needs. Theories like Reinforcement Theory, Dissonance Theory, and Equilibrium Theories provide valuable insights into the mechanisms behind attitude change, helping us grasp how and why attitudes shift over time. Understanding these processes is crucial for anyone interested in influencing behavior and facilitating positive change. #UPSC #IASprep #civilserviceexam #IASexamination #IASaspirants #UPSCjourney #IASexam #civilservice #IASgoals #UPSC2024 #IAS2024 #civilservant #IAScoaching #aUPSCmotivation #IASmotivation #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAS #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity
Cognitive dissonance occurs when there is a discrepancy between our beliefs or attitudes and behavior, creating a state of mental discomfort. Cognitive dissonance can significantly impact our decision-making processes. When experiencing this internal conflict, we often seek ways to restore cognitive harmony. Recognizing cognitive dissonance in ourselves and others is crucial for enhancing our decision-making abilities. Learn how cognitive dissonance theory manifests itself in everyday life and the steps you can take to become aware and manage it to make better choices. * Pre-order or learn more about Seline's new book “The Nomadic Soul: A Seeker's Guide to Finding a Sense of Self and Belonging in the Modern World”: https://www.thenomadicsoulbook.com/

On this episode, Ameé has an amazing guest on the show. Dr. Carol Tavris's work as a writer, teacher, and lecturer has been devoted to educating the public about psychological science. Her book with Elliot Aronson, "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by ME): Why we justify foolish beliefs, bad decisions, and hurtful acts" (revised edition, 2015, and most recently updated in 2020 with a new chapter--"Dissonance, Democracy, and the Demagogue"), applies cognitive dissonance theory to a wide variety of topics, including politics, conflicts of interest, memory, the criminal justice system, police interrogation, the daycare sex-abuse epidemic, family quarrels, international conflicts, and business. She speaks to many people on the topics of self-justification; science and pseudoscience in psychology; gender and sexuality; critical thinking; and anger. And on this episode, Ameé and Carol talk about cognitive dissonance, what it is and why we ALL tend to justify our actions, behaviors and beliefs, no matter what anybody tells us. In this episode, you will hear: A definition of Dissonance Theory and what it is The Pyramid of Choice that pushes people further apart over timeIdentify our pre-packaged blind spots and biases, in particular naive realism, and privilege Applying cognitive dissonance theory to all of the events of 2020, including Black Lives Matter, anti-racism, and the US Presidential electionsHow we can use social media differently if we know we really aren't going to change other people's minds & in fact, could be making matters worse How we can become more skeptical and more aware of our biases so that we can be sure we are on the right side of the coin that is truth and dishonesty Resources:Mistakes Were Made (but Not by Me) Third Edition: Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful ActsAnger: The Misunderstood Emotion

Another intriguing and informative episode of HBO's Westworld is in the books, and we continue to have a lot to discuss. In "Dissonance Theory", we learn that Ford has god-like control of the park, that the robots are largely made of "meat", that Maeve is coming dangerously close to unraveling the illusion of her life, and that Bernard is intentionally steering Dolores towards the mysterious end-game of Westworld, the maze. The Man in Black makes moves to unlock the real secrets under Westworld's dusty veneer. Two of the 'bots journey toward self-discovery ramps up. Intimidation and thinly-veiled threats amongst staff. Ever try to think up non-spoilery episode descriptions? It's impossible! Disclaimer: WWT contains adult topics and a good amount of nasty ol' swearin'. NSF most Ws, probably. And, due to spoilery good times, obviously listen at your own peril.

About Westworld: The program takes place in fictional Westworld, a technologically advanced, Western-themed amusement park populated completely by synthetic androids dubbed "hosts". Westworld caters to high-paying visitors dubbed "newcomers" (also known as "guests"), who can do whatever they wish within the park, without fear of retaliation from the hosts.
