Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker. Toven also lends his services to a number of high-profile television series, including HBO's critically acclaimed series, Westworld, Dwayne Johnson's hit series, Young Rock, and Marvel series Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. In addition to supervision, Toven served as music producer for The Marvels and on David O. Russell's Amsterdam. Blackstone was born in Trenton, New Jersey and it was there that he began to hone his craft under the guise of his father, a jazz musician, who remains one of his greatest musical influences. It was in a church playing drums at the age of 6 that his father discovered he had rhythm and perfect pitch. Once his family moved to Willingboro, NJ which has never been short on talent, he picked up bass in high school and the rest is history. After earning a scholarship to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, it didn't take long for Blackstone to become engulfed in the soul music pulse that was flowing through the city at that time. Beginning as a session musician, shortly after his start, he was touring the world.

The series comes from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner serve as executive producers, writers and co-showrunners. Welcome back! I am joined by author, award winning business executive (Capital CIO ORBIE Winner, National Corp. InspireCIO Finalist), and transformational CIO of Dewberry, Lisa Roger. With over 28 years of experience in various industries, roles, and organizations, Lisa has held executive IT positions in companies servicing healthcare, retail, telecommunications, and state and local organizations. Due to her success, she has recently wrote and published a book, “The Joy Factor: Escaping Job Disappointment and Finding Your Dream Career,” that shares her fascinating journey to finding the ‘joy factor' in her life with the intention of coaching others to find their own joy. Here are some of the top takeaways you'll receive from this episode: How to professionally brand yourself and avoid imposter syndrome Investing in leadership within your organization Joy is an ‘inside out' game first and not ‘outside in' Working with millennials: how to avoid change fatigue, quiet quitting, etc. How to find your joy, confront your destiny, and add value Board awareness and succession planning The importance of networking and building relationships As a CIO and Business IT Leader here are More wins you will get by listening: 5:18 Bill- “When did you discover what your real superpower is and your real strengths?” 6:00 Lisa- “What I really realized was how I could bring people together, how I could problem solve for a mission, keep people focused on it, do team building in critical moments where tensions are high and get results.” 6:21 Lisa- “Building teams and going into dysfunctional organizations and making them functional. Restoring pride is one of the things I love doing.” 7:16 Bill- “What is the genesis of your book, The Joy Factor? What actually started you thinking about writing it?” 7:44 Lisa- “It was my nieces and nephews who are millennials. They were entering the workforce and felt this deep sense of being unsatisfied and being disappointed and not being able to make that difference.” 8:08 Lisa- “I went through the same journey and if there was some way I could accelerate them to a place where their joy factor is way bigger now and they could have control. How can we systematically do that?” 9:08 Bill- “Do you find that that's an issue with hiring millennials within your company and other companies as well?” 9:24 Lisa- “Indeed. I look at the great resignation and quiet quitting. People are trying to find their own way so they can have control back, whether that's the hours of the day or how you work. Today's influences transcends millennials now.” 10:09 Lisa- “How could you add value in the organization that you're at right now that is going to bring you joy?” 10:31 Bill- “The whole message of the book is an inside out. The joy starts with the individual.” 11:06 Lisa- “Joy does come within your own happiness. It's a mindset. You can only control you.” 11:47 Lisa- “Don't assume what is in other people's brains. Assume good. Apply yourself in ways that are fulfilling who you are.” 12:45 Lisa- “I found journaling to be an excellent tool. Articulate in black and white what changes and life events are happening. Let's write everything down and start there.” 13:31 Lisa- “Let's systematically move things over from a negative to the positive column and reframe our mind and look for opportunities that are going to be giving you more exposure to that joy.” 14:20 Lisa- “The last negative thing you're exposed to often has the most power in your brain. But if you force yourself to write down the most wonderful things that happened to you in a day, really dissect it. What were you doing? Why did it bring you joy? Were you coaching? Problem solving? Were you just listening? Be very mindful and specific about what brought you joy.” 17:25 Bill- “In your book, what do you mean by the acceleration of joy?” 17:32 Lisa- “It's how do you get to that place where your joy factor is overwhelming the not so good factor. How do you get there quicker?” 17:41 Lisa- “The most powerful thing you can do it let people know. If you don't tell people what your aspirations are, how can they help you get there?” 19:21 Lisa- “Look at how you're branding yourself, not only from a professional perspective but to your resume, your LinkedIn profile, etc. You have got to let people know what you want to do.” 23:20 Lisa- “We have a national crisis which is baby boomers retiring. The next generation is very small. Then the millennials who are much bigger but are quiet quitting, working hybrid, in the gig economy. They're not necessarily going through the same leadership journey that previous generations went through.” 24:32 Lisa- “It is all about just defining our leadership companies within the organization, what opportunities can we bring to people, what are we doing for succession planning, etc.” 26:44 Lisa- “If we invest in everyone from a leadership perspective, then we're all going to benefit.” 27: 43 Bill- “What percentage of your time each week is really dedicated each month to efforts around that particular leadership journey?” 32:12 Bill- “What differentiates the new people coming into the organizations versus the ones that don't make it through?” 32:54 Lisa- “The ability to have dialogue around change management and communication culture. Are they going to add value in a way that makes them happy?” 35:06 Lisa- “I think the biggest opportunity lost is creating healthy relationships where they're at and creating powerful networks.” 35:41 Lisa- “Being the CIO is one of the most unique positions where you get to touch every piece of the organization.” 40:15 Lisa- “There is some fear when it comes to the change that's happening in the world. Be grounded in your own self-worth. Be purposeful, have the right mindset, and you'll feel a sense of control that will give you the leverage to do the right things.” Resources Lisa Roger's LinkedIn “The Joy Factor: Escaping Job Disappointment and Finding Your Dream Career” Women in Business Initiative- George Mason University

This episode is available on:* Spotify* YouTube* Apple PodcastsToday we cover one of the requested topics by our listeners - AI Content.ChatGPT took over the internet to reach 1 million users within 5 days - and many wondered about their next business idea, feared job security or simply poked holes in it.We also checked the search demand for crypto versus ChatGPT, and it already shows a very different trend compared to Crypto. So, is AI content the next big tool, or will it fizz out as a trendy toy?✅Kevin says yes, AI content tools are valuable to help work better, faster, and smarter⛔Kevin says no, AI content tools are a cool technology toy, where utmost they can be used for applications having defined boundaries. In this episode of Contrarian Marketing, we discuss:* How is AI content used today?* What are the limitations of using AI for content?* How will AI content shape in the next 12 months?Key Takeaways* AI content tools can already solve small problems like writer's block today.* AI content opens up many possibilities for new tools, job roles, and business ideas.* AI content cannot think or conduct original research on your behalf.* AI content doesn't yet have clearly defined boundaries, which is why you should fact-check and copyright-check its output before using it.Kevin's take: AI content tools are valuable and can make you better, faster, and smarterKevin mentions how AI tools already provide practical use cases for content creation today:* Create content for topics with clear definitions, like glossary blogs* Write product descriptions and category text for e-commerce sites* Unblock writer's block with tools like Lex* Draft article outlines* Add schema markup* Improve grammar and spelling* Suggest images or graphics* Adopt the writing style or tone of famous writers or personalities* Auto-completion of sentences for emailsKevin further adds how it also opens up new possibilities and fields for individuals and brands to explore:“It might be true that when everybody has access to the same technology, then the output is not valuable anymore. But I think it will open up the door to a lot of new possibilities. The central question in my mind when we talk about AI, generative AI, and content is when you can create anything – what do you create?”"Prompt engineering will be a new, hot field. Some people and companies will have an advantage, and others won't.An interesting question is: what new fields of work all of a sudden open up when others have been solved by AI?AI content receives a lot of press and excitement from the public, but one should be careful about how they plan on using the tool:“I think the AI tools that are coming out create hype not because AI is good enough to do all these things perfectly today, but because the next step is so clearly visible. But I would not outsource something completely to AI that does not have incredibly clear boundaries.”Speaking about boundaries, Eli shares an example of how AI doesn't work well in poorly defined conditions:I asked ChatGPT if Kanye West was an anti-Semite, and it told me definitively no. But that's probably because it's not updated with the latest news. Still, I don't think you can completely rely on AI for things that don't have defined boundaries.Eli's take: AI content tools are a cool tech toyEli states that in the existing sea of content, AI content tools may be more useful for learning and simple fact-finding purposes.I think these AI tools are great foundations. They're research tools the same way you use Ahrefs or SemRush – you do some keyword research to find ideas and then build on top of it. That's what I think AI content and AI tools are good at, but it's not the end.Eli also mentions that many people make buying decisions when they consume content online - and bad AI content will lead to a terrible purchase or customer experience.“If people have to make buying decisions and look at this terrible content that's written by bots, to make that buying decision, that doesn't make a lot of sense. But, if we live in a world where bots buy from bots, that's totally different. If you just say to your Siri or Google Assistant that ‘I need soft toilet paper', then Siri and Google can just look at what Amazon has, and choose it for you. But again, if it makes a mistake, you're the one using the toilet paper. So it's always going to be hard to live in a world where AI is just working with AI.”Eli also highlights how you cannot make AI do original research, nor can it replace human intuition.“I think you can use AI for text-related content, for which you were already going on Upwork and paying someone ridiculously low amounts of money to just write little bits of content. But if it's writing a book or writing a journalistic research piece, I don't think we're there.ChatGPT, Google Assistant, or Siri also can't help you decide who is the best plumber based on their distance, pricing, or services. Or it can't decide where you should go on vacation or the things you should do. This is because you need to understand your own personal needs. This week on On Story we're joined by Westworld co-creator, writer & director Lisa Joy for a conversation on writing science fiction. Lisa Joy is a screenwriter, director, and producer. Her recent work includes Westworld, a dystopian science fiction thriller, and HBO mega-hit. Westworld has received an outstanding 54 Emmy Award nominations, including 9 wins, and Joy's writing and producing have earned her 3 Emmy nominations. Joy attended the 2021 Austin Film Festival's Writers Conference. Westworld is set in a futuristic amusement park where wealthy visitors are given the opportunity to experience their wildest fantasies through a mode of artificial consciousness and centers on a group of robot “hosts” who begin to diverge from their programmed scripts and exhibit abnormal behavior. Moderator Casey Baron sat down with Lisa Joy for a panel about her work at the Austin Film Festival. Violent delights have violent ends, to quote one of the most daring TV shows of the last decade. And listeners, we are now officially approaching that end of that incredible series. Today on Script Apart, Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy reflects on the creation of the smash-hit HBO series, reveals the thinking behind some of the thrilling creative decisions within its gripping fourth season and confirms that next season will be the show's last, should HBO officially give it the greenlight. With Westworld, writer-director Lisa and her husband Jonathan Nolan have delivered a dazzling, dystopian vision of a future in which AI has run amok. Originally centred on a theme park recreation of the Wild West, the show has since zoomed out significantly to depict a robot uprising that, by season four, is threatening to bring an end to the human race. Though the show's ambitious philosophising hasn't been to everyone's tastes, there arguably hasn't been a show more packed with mystery and intrigue since Damon Lindelof's Lost. The constant swings Westworld takes demand to be admired.Lisa was born in New Jersey to immigrant parents, and grew up balancing a love of poetry and storytelling with a sense of obligation to her parents, who longed for her to follow a career path with plenty of job security. Which is how she became a lawyer, before deciding to risk it all to pursue her love of writing. In this episode, we talk about how that immigrant background influenced some of her storytelling sensibilities and how everything changed while pregnant with her first child, when she wrote a brilliant spec script titled Reminiscence, that announced to Hollywood that here was a writer capable of threading huge questions about nostalgia and the nature of human existence into captivating popcorn entertainment. We also delve into the shocking twists in Westworld that were originally going to happen in the show's pilot, as she and Jonathan debated how to pace this series and the many secrets contained within. Also if you're wondering what's in store in season five, we have you covered. Lisa speaks eloquently in this episode about the parallels between the ending of Westworld season four and the predicaments that we as a species are staring down in real life right now. This is a spoiler conversation so be sure to have caught up with the show before tuning in.
