Mexican Gothic Author Comes to Jacksonville Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic, is coming to Jacksonville for Hispanic Heritage Month. Her latest novel is a historical drama set in Hollywood, following three different point of view characters all tied to the production of a movie inspired by the Biblical story of Salome. FEATURED BOOK: The Seventh Veil of Salome 1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times. So when the film's mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves. Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including Gods of Jade and Shadow (Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, Ignyte Award), Mexican Gothic (Locus Award, British Fantasy Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Aurora Award, Goodreads Award), Velvet Was the Night (finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Macavity Award), and her newest book, The Seventh Veil of Salome, which was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for August 2024. Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Cachanilla and Canuck, originally from Baja California, Silvia now resides in Vancouver. She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia. Interviewer Michelle Lizet Flores is a graduate of the FSU and NYU creative writing programs. Currently, you can hear her doing backup vocals with Mama Blue as well as maintaining performances as a solo artist." Guest Interview: Jessica Leigh Walton The first step in her career was at 15 when she picked up a guitar. Her dad helped facilitate her interest in guitar. Her dad was actually the first person to record her in his studio. Her dad who owned a guitar shop surprisingly didn’t play guitar. Jessica has two kids, 18 & 19, who are both musicians as well. She chose to find someone to teach her daughter guitar instead of being a dictatorial mother trying to teach her guitar. Once she started managing herself she was exposed to so many more genres. She idolized Janis Joplin, she was actually able to perform with Joplin’s band. One of the songs on her second album was a song that Joplin was actually supposed to sing. She brings the “live” in live performance. Her connection with her audience, whether they’ve ever heard her before, or even heard of her, has to be experienced to be appreciated. The songs that Mama Blue has written are the core of her performances. Her songs are unsparing in their self-examination, but compassionate and supportive of those around her. Mama Blue’s originals are destined to reach an audience far beyond the area in which she has, until now, performed live. Mama Blue’s songs are about her own life, the lives of people she’s known, and the lives of everyone. They’re about the joy and pain of love, about being a mother, about the social forces that influence our lives. And she sings directly to her audiences … not just figuratively, but walking out with a wireless microphone to sing to them close-up. Combine that original material with a selection of songs by artists who’ve inspired Mama Blue – ranging from soul sisters Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Alicia Keyes and Nina Simone to rock bands like Queen and The Rolling Stones – and you have a musical journey through modern American life. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Mama Blue graduated from the city’s prestigious Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. She earned a scholarship to Jacksonville University, where she majored in vocal performance and drama. Mama Blue and her crew have performed at festivals from Springing the Blues, Dancin’ in the Streets and Porch Fest in Jacksonville, to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and at events and nightclubs across Northeast Florida and beyond. With a signature flower in her hair as the finishing touch to her visual style, and a unique ability to reach people at the center of their souls, Mama Blue brings the warmth and understanding of an irresistibly genuine person to the stage. A native of Jacksonville, FL, Jamison began his study of Jazz as a high school student at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Jamison gained worldwide acclaim as a featured musician in the Tribeca Film Festival winning documentary CHOPS; a film that followed the school's jazz ensemble as they prepare and perform in the renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington Festival competition. As a Jazz Studies student at Florida State University (B.S. Jazz Studies; B.M. Music Industry), Jamison was selected to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency Program at the Kennedy Center in 2009. While there, Grammy-winning songwriter and vocalist, Carmen Lundy took notice of Jamison and asked him to join her band. Through Lundy, he has toured the world and played some of the nation's most historic venues. Ross went on to further his education at the University of New Orleans where he earned a Master of Music degree. In 2012, Jamison won the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition for drums, the most prestigious award for jazz artists. Since then, Jamison has gained acclaim within the genre through his collaboration with, Wes Anderson, Jon Batiste, Henry Butler, Billy Childs, Dr. John, Jimmy Heath, Ramsey Lewis, Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Marcus Roberts, Patrice Rushen, Cecile McLorin Salvant and Snarky Puppy. Jamison's artistry, interpreted through his profound knowledge of jazz, is an honest and organic expression of humanity. It is true to him, it is Jamison. Support this podcast
