It is hard to fight against an enemy whose reason for being is to eliminate you. So says author Rick Richman, as he answers the criticism leveled against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. It is Israel, he says, that is trying to prevent a genocidal operation perpetrated by Hamas. Richman, the author of "And None Shall Make Them Afraid: Eight Stories of the Modern State of Israel," says the anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian protests are filled with misinformation and misguided passions by young people, students and even faculty, lured into a political position by authorities who choose to ignore the facts surrounding the centuries of clashes between Jews and Arabs and its modern day manifestations. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Richman talks about a long list of topics concerning Israel, including: the ongoing protests on college campuses and why so many are ignorant of what Zionism actually is, Zionism and Americanism, the two great "isms" of the 20th century, that Palestine was never an independent state, why Arabs rejected having their own independent state six times including in 1947, reaction to claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and war crimes by Hamas as they use their own people, innocents, as human shields. Jews, says Richman, are the "canary in the proverbial coal mine", what happens to them is only the start. Islamic militants will not stop with them until the world is converted to its rule. Brain Hurt Scale = 3/10. A live recording of that time I was invited by James Pember to speak at the inaugural SXSW Sydney 2023. Note: this is a repost with permission of an episode of the Own The Moment podcast by Komo Technologies. James interviews me on-stage in front of 70+people and I try to answer a series of questions completely impromptu. James is a product leader and host of a podcast run by martech firm Komo Technologies. They have a podcast called 'Own The Moment'. Reposting here because I think the questions and answers will be of interest to you all. There were many things I wish I had said or rephrased or prepared for, but I suppose that's the nature of live interviews. What do you think?
Many people, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, might think of Sharia as ancient and unchanging. But like any form of law, it has a history. And like every aspect of religion, it was transformed in the modern era. This episode examines how Sharia changed during the two centuries when the British Empire ruled over large parts of the Muslim world. Surveying two transformational centuries—from around 1750 to around 1950—we'll hear what happened to Sharia as British rule fanned out from India (including what is now Pakistan and Bangladesh) to Malaya (including what is today Malaysia and Singapore) then Egypt. We'll learn how Sharia metamorphosed from a general societal discourse to a narrower notion of ‘Islamic law' then state law in turn. The result was what this episode's expert guest has called “the paradox of Islamic law,” by which Sharia was centralized by the state but at the same time marginalized by state institutions. Nile Green talks to Iza Hussin, author of The Politics of Islamic Law: Local Elites, Colonial Authority, and the Making of the Muslim State (University of Chicago Press, 2016).

Centuries ago, when what we now refer to as “States” were just starting to take shape, who did they turn to for guidance on how to perform their basic functions? Who taught them the equivalent of accounting, record-keeping, law, taxation and dispute resolution 101? Who served as a model for how to administer justice and organize an assembly of representatives? And who, by extension, do we have to thank for the great inheritance of such fundamental principles as the rule of law, that have been passed down generation after generation? That's right, the Roman Catholic Church of the medieval era!Our guest for this episode is Dr. Anna Grzymala-Busse, author of the recently published book, Sacred Foundations: The Religious and Medieval Roots of the European State.Dr. Grzymala-Busse researches and teaches at Stanford University, where she serves as the Michelle and Kevin Douglas Professor of International Studies in the Department of Political Science, the Director of the Europe Center, and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute. On today's podcast, Mary Danielsen looks at the fast track and eventual disintegration of Hillsong, in light of the release of the new documentary. In historical context, the downgrade of sound doctrine began in the late 19th century and led us to this self-oriented church culture. What should a true church look like? What is “apostasy” and how can we spot it readily and the damage it does? In the 2nd half of the podcast, a timeline of history of the last 120 years is explored, with an emphasis on how much we have seen God's hand in the affairs of men, leading up to the birth of the Modern State of Israel and the modern EU as God situates His plan for both Jew and Gentile in the last days. https://www.gotquestions.org/apostasy.html https://harbingersdaily.com/anti-bible-attack-dogs-peta-and-artificial-intelligence-team-up-to-re-write-the-book-of-genesis/ https://nypost.com/2023/05/28/north-korea-toddler-parents-jailed-for-life-after-being-caught-with-bible/

For patriots, patriotism, or one form of it at least, is a recognition of the obligations that flow when one recognizes all that one owes to previous generations and what they undertook and passed down. And if one wanted to inculcate that form of patriotism, how would one do it? Rick Richman has a simple and powerful answer to that question. Richman recently published And None Shall Make Them Afraid: Eight Stories of the Modern State of Israel, a book that tries to foster connection to Israel and the Jewish people by telling stories from the past. Rick's answer: we have to teach them history. History, as he sees it, has a role to play in the formation of devotion to the Jewish people. It can help Jews see all that they owe by relaying the stories of all that their predecessors have accomplished, and by implication, what Jews now have an opportunity and obligation to pass on to their own descendants. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

This virtual event featured a panel of current and former state solicitors general exploring and discussing how state SGs balance their duty to defend state sovereignty with different political priorities. There are some areas in which the states seem to be more on the same page (such as criminal law) and others that involve sharp disagreements among the states in terms of the duty to defend state sovereignty (e.g. DACA). Focusing on the role of the SG—as opposed to the presumably more overtly political state attorney general position—how do different SGs approach these issues?Featuring:--Benjamin M. Flowers, Solicitor General, Ohio--Elbert Lin, Chair, Issues & Appeals, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP; Former Solicitor General, West Virginia--Ryan Park, Solicitor General, North Carolina--Moderator: Hon. Britt C. Grant, Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit; Former Solicitor General, Georgia

Calvin Jones is the Director of Education at Park Tool company, a position he's held for more than 15 years. He's the author of the Big Blue Book Bicycle Repair and his repair videos on YouTube have been viewed by millions. We ask Calvin: How did you learn how to work on bikes? What type of riding do you like to do? Do mountain bikes require more or less repair and maintenance than other types of bikes? Are today's bikes easier to work on than the bikes 10 or 20 years ago? Do bike manufacturers do a good job considering maintenance and repair when they design new products? Are Torx bolts taking over hex bolts? Which repairs are your least favorite? Will future bike mechanics need electrical skills, or is diagnosing and repairing electronic components something manufacturers will want to control? What's the effect of YouTube videos like yours that help folks make repairs themselves at home? Check out the Park Tool YouTube channel and parktool.com. Programming note: For 2023 the Singletracks podcast will be published on Tuesdays each week instead of Monday. ✏️ A written transcript of this conversation will be available at singletracks.com. --Keep up with the latest in mountain biking at Singletracks.com and on Instagram @singletracks --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/singletracks/support
