Hi #AmWriting listeners, Jennie here! Today, I'm talking to Jane Friedman, who is one of the most trusted voices in the world of publishing. She has advised and served organizations such as Writers Digest, The Chicago Manual of Style, The Editorial Freelancers Association, the Alliance of Independent Authors, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others. She writes two must-read newsletters for industry professionals. One is her personal newsletter, and the other is The Bottom Line (previously called The Hot Sheet), where she provides nuanced market intelligence to thousands of authors and industry professionals. The reason I wanted to speak with Jane on the podcast today is that she has just released an updated version of her book, The Business of Being a Writer, which digs into the nuts and bolts of the writing life, including the work of getting published and choosing how to do that, and the work of making money. It is one of those must-read books for writers who are serious about making a mark.Jane offers so much information, some tough love, and also a reason for hope, and I'm so excited I'm talking to Jane about her own writing process, and her advice for writers.Links from the PodJane's Trademark situation via Writer's DigestJane's The Bottom Line Newsletter The Author's Guild (for AI info)Simon Willison's Things We Learned About LLMs in 2024 (via Substack)Make Art Make Money, Elizabeth Hyde StevensHow to Reform Capitalism, Alain de BottonThe Gift, Lewis Hyde Dana GioiaAlan Watt's Out of Your MindFind Jane via her website: www.janefriendman.com, or on Instagram at @janefriedman This is a public episode. Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Are you an interior designer or a thought leader considering writing a book? Well…what does it take to get a book deal? What are options for self-publishing? How do you write a book in the first place? The process is overwhelming, but today's guest, Stephanie Chandler of the Nonfiction Authors Association, is here to walk us through the process. Stay tuned! Stephanie Chandler is the author of several books including The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan. She is CEO of the Nonfiction Authors Association, a vibrant community for writers, and the Nonfiction Writers Conference, a live event conducted entirely online since 2010. A frequent speaker at business events and on the radio, she has been featured in Entrepreneur, BusinessWeek, The Writer, Writer's Digest, and Wired magazine. ***
Today's guest is Crystal Shelley, of Salt Lake City. Crystal is the owner of Rabbit with a Red Pen. She edits fiction and is an authenticity reader. Drawing on her background as a social worker, she unites her love of language and passion for social justice by pushing for writing and representation that's more dignified, intentional, and just. Crystal is the creator of the Conscious Language Toolkits for Editors and Writers — these toolkits are fantastic resources and I'll put a link to them in the show notes. Crystal also serves on the board of ACES: the Society for Editing and is an instructor for the Editorial Freelancers Association. In this episode, we talk about: What “conscious language” is, a term coined by Karen Yin, who also created the Conscious Style Guide. What the difference between “conscious language” and “inclusive language” is. Why using conscious language — and critically assessing the language we use — in our content is important. Style guides are just that: guides. The primary ones, such as the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, don't always reflect the most updated and conscious language or the accepted language of a particular group. Some pitfalls when editing and striving for conscious language. How we can advocate for using more conscious language at our associations. How staff can respond to members who criticize using “woke” or “politically correct” language or content. Why everyone should embrace and use “singular they” in their content. How to think about which words to use when identifying people by race and ethnicity. What ableism and ableist language is and how incredibly prevalent it is in our society. What “inspiration porn” is and why not to write so-called “inspiring” stories of people with disabilities. What an “authenticity reader” or “sensitivity reader” is and how associations can use these experts to avoid stereotypes and harming readers. Books That Make You Go On a Science Fiction Adventure That's Both Epic and Inclusive A writer since she was a child, Rebecca Inch-Partridge grew up writing stories about The Bionic Woman meeting, say, Captain Kirk. Escaping the Dashia, her first novel, is a YA science fantasy that tells the story of young telepath Twyla, abducted by her mother and forced to participate in the criminal organization that comprises the family business. The book was published by Black Rose Writing. A member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and Broad Universe, Rebecca frequently speaks at writers' conferences and pop culture conventions. Her writing, both fiction and non, has appeared in several magazines, and she has won Honorable Mention in the likes of Writers of the Future and Writer's Digest contests. Author Stories - Author Interviews, Writing Advice, Book Reviews
If you missed our live event this past Friday in the Story Craft Cafe, don't worry, we've got you covered! Join us as we recap this exciting Character Workshop with story coach Destiny Salter! This workshop specifically focused on how to push your characters to evolve. This is an episode you will want to listen to again and again. Enjoy! Destiny is the writing mastermind behind The Book Clinic and has been helping authors improve their novels for years. You can also check out this Character Creation Workshop she hosted for Dabble in December! About Destiny: I have had the rare experience of being on both sides of the publishing industry—I've worked under the top agents in New York City and I myself am a writer with extensive knowledge of my craft. I'm a graduate of Princeton University, where I studied English and Creative Writing. At university, I studied under best-selling authors and award-winning creative writers. Leaders in their genres, they taught me the ins and outs of story structure and the craft of great fiction writing. I have experience in the publishing industry, having worked for literary agencies such as Sterling Lord Literistic, and keep my finger on the pulse of the current publishing market. Having apprenticed under some of the top literary agents in NYC, I know not only what makes a good, compelling story, but exactly what literary agents and publishing houses are looking for from submissions. The knowledge I've gleaned and the secrets I've learned go far beyond what you can simply find on the internet and are helpful both for those seeking traditional publishing or self-publishing. I've edited in fiction writing of all genres, including children's books, though I specialize in fantasy, romance, YA, and thriller/suspense. I also have experience with non-fiction, particularly autobiographies, memoirs, and self-help. I'm a member of several professional editor organizations including ACES: The Society for Editing, Editorial Freelancers Association, Professional Editors Network and Editors of Color. I have three years of experience as a professional editor and proofreader, and in that time, I've edited scores of manuscripts, from children's picture books to large-scale epic fantasy novels. Whether you're trying to identify your target demographic or are struggling to develop a good character motivation, I'm here to guide you on your journey to publishing. I strive to be detailed, concise, honest, and intuitive, highlighting your story's strengths and shoring up its weaknesses. My goal is to preserve your voice as the author while also bringing out the best in your work. I value consistent and speedy communication with my clients to ensure I'm meeting their needs and that they can be exceptionally proud of the final product. If you're looking for an editing and storytelling expert who brings both value and experience to the table, I'm the one you're looking for.

Today Tei, Hope and Bees talk about all sorts of professional writing, from copywriting/editing to journalism to nonfiction to original fiction, and why we/you should/should not do it. The Editorial Freelancers Association
Hey there word nerds! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Pamela Taylor. Pamela brings her love of history to the art of storytelling. An avid reader of historical fact and fiction, she finds the past offers rich sources for character, ambiance, and plot that allow readers to escape into a world totally unlike their daily lives. A history major in college, with minors in French and Spanish, she is also a classically trained musician and believes this has given her a special feel for the rhythm, dynamics, and phrasing of the written word. In addition to creating her own stories, Pamela is active in multiple writing communities. She is a member of the DFW Writers Workshop and is in her third year on the Judges Panel for the Ink & Insights Writing Contest. In 2018, she joined the team at DIY MFA where she writes the Historical Fiction column, “Past Perfect.” She is also a freelance editor and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. She shares her home with two Corgis who frequently remind her that a dog walk is the best inspiration for that next chapter. In this episode Pamela and I discuss: Techniques to craft compelling secondary characters. How research and travel can help writers build a realistic historical world. What a style sheet is--and why it’s an important part of the editorial process. How to guide new readers into the second or third book in a series. Plus, their #1 tip for writers. Today on the show Jodi breaks down some book design basics for author-entrepreneurs. Book design is a specific skill set. Graphic design and web design are not the same. Your job as an author-entrepreneur is to hire someone who knows the ins and outs of professional book design. It’s tempting to use the designer you use in your business, but that’s typically a mistake. As Jodi’s friend and colleague Lisa Von de Linde says, as a reader, if a book is designed well, you don’t even notice or think about the design. Design is subjective, so while there are some “rules,” the design process is guided more by author preference and genre trends. Books are judged by their cover, but the interior should offer continuity with a book’s cover design. Author-entrepreneurs should be sure to ask about budget, time line, and process before hiring a book designer. To find a book designer, ask the other book publishing professionals on your team (editor, publicist, etc.), if you’ve hired anyone yet. If not, organizations like the Association of Independent Publishing Professionals and the Editorial Freelancers Association are good places to start.
