Martians? Forget about them! Renunions with family? You better believe it. So obviously all that's left is to go into great detail on the aftermath of an invasion that changed the world, or at least the 70 mile square radius between London and Woking,With the final chapter, Epilogue, we reach the finale of the novel, and what better way to commemorate than a trip to the site that inspired the story that launched a thousand (ish) remakes?Plus there's a song about Germs, about time someone said something about them, and we sit down with Jonathan Ferguson, the Keeper of Firearms from the Royal Armories. Please Subscribe and Review on wherever you get your podcasts on.Follow Edy Hurst on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.TOUR OF THE WORLDSEdy Hurst's Comedy ersion of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of H.G.Wells' Literary Version (Via Orson Welles' Radio Version and Steven Spielberg's Film Version) of the War of the Worlds is going ON TOUR!In just a few days there's going to be a filming at the Homecoming show at the Lowry theatre in Salford:linktr.ee/edyhurstPlus see my new show about Witches, Weirdos and the Venga Boys, The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Edy Hurst (WIP)at Buxton Fringe Festival in July here!Theme tune 'Fall of Saigon' by Ichabod WolfRecorded, Edited, Produced by Edy Hurst.Score by Jason Cooke. We're back in Surrey after a brief trip to London, but for how long? London, home of Big Ben, the underground and now the ever growing threat of a Martian invasion. As refugees from Woking and Surrey arrive, we join the narrator's brother to see his side of the story, and another of H.G. Wells' what's in the papers chapters. We also take a look at British exceptionalism - what is it? Why is it here? Has it ever led us into terrible decisions that still are unresolved today? This chapter I'm joined by the hugely talented Frank Foucault, a brilliant comedian and musician who has just released an album only available on facemask. He joins us for a quiz on true or false Victorian headlines, and also provides an absolute jam about wanting to read a book.Follow Frank Foucault on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, check out his album mask here.Follow Edy Hurst on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to keep up with all the latest on Podcast news, songs and more! Comedian and podcaster Edy Hurst (Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of... The War of the Worlds) joins Jack and Josh to discuss the zany 2002 comedy, The Master of Disguise. Often described as one of the worst films ever made, what will the boys make of this Dana Carvey classic? Would this be another film that would have been better if it starred Jim Carrey? And how many films in the Happy Madison back catalogue are severely impacted by the tragic events of 9/11? All these questions and more await you in the latest episode of Truly Happily Madison. In this halloween special we read The Red Room, a short ghost Story by H.G. Wells. What apparition haunts the redroom of an old manor house? When the going gets tough, what do you do? Strip off to the waist and steal a boat in boiling water? If you're the narrator, yes! Also, we finally see the introduction of the Curate. To listeners of the musical, they may know the character as the Parson played by Phil Lynott. But what the heck is a curate? Where do they fit into the hierarchy of the Anglican Church? What would you do if you saw a random army man in your garden? Invite them in for a candlelit dinner and a whisky? This chapter we see the introduction of the Artillery Man, a character that pops up in some form in nearly every adaptation of the War of the Worlds.Whether it's David Essex in the Musical Version or Tim Robbins kinda-creepy-conspiracy-theory-guy in the Spielberg version, he's the Martian war survivor with a heart of gold.Naturally, I invited personal comedy friend Tony Wright on to play the role. Was Wells a bad lad? Did he believe in the horrors of colonialism and eugenics? Is he guilty by association?Regular listeners will remember that in Chapter 1 we took a deep dive into Victorian Racism, a subject that Wells rubbed shoulders with some of the worst proponents of scientific racism.BUT as it turns, the answer is a fairly solid no, as it turns out, Wells was often outspoken for socially progressive, going so far as to write public letters calling for the abolition of segregation in America, and creating the blue prints for Universal Human Rights. For this interlude from our telling of the War of the Worlds, I'm joined by writer and producer Simon Guerrier!Simon has produced a number of documentaries on the life and times of H.G. Wells including the fabulous BBC Radio 3 documentary, HG and the H Bomb which was used as research for the deep dive in Chapter 6!You can listen to both of them at the links on them - fancy that!In this chat we talk about H.G. Wells and his response to eugenics, his love life, and his pursuit to always discover new and challenging ideas. You know how it is, it's Friday night, a bunch of Martians have killed your friends and all you want to do is find out what's shakin' at the railway station. At least that's where we find our narrator in this weeks episode of Edy Hurst's Podcast Version of the War of the Worlds. After the destruction of your close friends by some interplanetary mirror jerks, who wouldn't seek comfort at home? In this week's chapter our narrator heads back to his wife, but not before slagging off some locals. Also, we take a look at what it meant to have PTSD in Victorian times (it didn't exist then) and a quick chat with the wonderful Bexie Archer! Over the century and a bit since it was published, the War of the Worlds has been adapted into countless formats, from graphic novels to radio shows, but one of the most beloved must be Jeff Wayne's 1978 Musical Version.Taking a short break from the book proper, this week we take a deep dive into the life of Jeff, as well as hear a song Edy wrote about a robot knee.Follow @edyhurst on twitter, instagram or facebook for the latest on the podcast as well as songs and videos.Credits:Produced by Edy HurstWritten by H.G.Wells and Edy HurstTheme Song 'The Fall of Saigon' By Ichabod WolfAll others songs and music produced by Edy Hurst, with the exception of excerpts from Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, Celebration by Cool & the Gang and The Eve of the War by Jeff Wayne.
Finally! The mysterious cylinder crash landed on Horsell Common Opens, and at last we catch a glimpse of those pesky Martians that'll cause such a ruckus. With the first description of the Martians, I wonder with Alasdair Beckett-King what previous descriptions of aliens might be found in folklore of yore. There's also a banger of a tune about being stuck in a pit, not that anyone knows what it feels like to be stuck in a specific place for an unspecified amount of time right now! Hello Leaders, This time we get UP and be BRAVE as we leap into our CARS, 'rush' off to MONSTERS UNIVERSITY in order to FIND NEMO & DORY who have a real TOY STORY to tell us. INCREDIBLES, no? That's right it's all Pixar all the time, despite Debs being constantly confused about what is and isn't a Pixar film and ending up talking about nazis like most old people. Luckily we have Edy Hurst (@edyhurst), comedian and Pixar nut to help us re-live this BUG'S LIFE of an episode. ENJOY!! @katemccabesays & @dj_appelby are your @strfemaleleads
Former theme park worker, Edy Hurst has always been a show off, a key criterion for a career in stand-up comedy. After a pretty shaky start when he died at the Comedy Store’s King Gong show (who hasn’t?), he went on to find his comedy voice. Enjoy 15 minutes of stand-up and chat with the lively comedian. ‘Edy Hurst Theme Show’ is at Just the Tonic at the Tron. ‘Edy Hurst and Joby Mageean - Dead Nice Boys’ is appearing as part of Edinburgh’s Free Festival. Edy Hurst crash bangs and wallops onto the show, does his daft singing and talks about his history with the fringe. he doesn't even have a show here! But he's lovely anyway.
