In this episode of Crime Over Cocktails, I talk with my guest Elizabeth Mikotowicz. In her early twenties she was beaten so bad by her then boyfriend it landed her in the hospital due to a severe head injury. Doctors insisted that she take opioids for the pain which then led to addiction. Trying to save herself as well as her kids she was forced to live on the street while hiding from her abuser. The only people she could find to help her survive were drug dealers. She sold drugs for them, and they gave her a place to stay. After getting busted for selling drugs at a hotel she was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison which helped her get clean but opened her eyes to so much more. Elizabeth is now an advocate and, on a mission, to out the prison system for all the abuse, rape, and misconduct that she saw while there. She is calling out Cumberland County Jail, Danbury Federal Correctional Institute, Alderson FPC, and Long Creek Youth Development Center. She Was told she was on to small a dose to get addicted. Eventually she went to the DV shelter and was turned away, they said her injury was to severe and it put the other women in danger. She survived because drug dealers helped her - or took advantage depending how you look at it. She eventually went to federal prison for a non violent drug charge. She endured and witnessed so much institutional abuse, corruption, systemic racism and cruelty; sometimes she still wakes up screaming. But! She's turned it all around , launched an environmentlly friendly feminine brand thats being sold in stores and also comes in plus sizes. She has gotten bills put on the table and passed for the good of the people- not corporations and institutions. In this week's episode, Raquel and Jennifer talk to Elizabeth Mikotowicz. In her 20s, Elizabeth barely survived a very violent relationship which resulted in a severe injury and a prescription from her doctor for opioids that she was not allowed to refuse (she was threatened with child protective services because she was pregnant and refusing medical advice). Elizabeth eventually went to federal prison for a nonviolent drug charge. 5 years ago Elizabeth was painting murals as a federal inmate; now she has had her own art shows and has launched an environmentally friendly clothing brand based on her art. Prison opened her eyes to the systemic racism, cruelty, corruption, and inequality in the US. Now she tries to expose what she witnessed and endured in order to get necessary legislation passed. Elizabeth created her women's clothing brand (EPM Clothing) during her healing journey and she wants to help people from all walks of life do the same. Elizabeth's first experience with abuse was at the age of 15 when she was with a 21-year-old. The abuse continued when they got back together at 18 and had a daughter together. The daughter's father was even more dangerous and left her partially disabled after an assault. He would torture her in the bathroom for hours, leading her to become addicted to the pain medication prescribed by doctors. He even choked her to the point where her windpipe would collapse, causing her to have difficulty breathing for a year after he left. She sought help from a battered women's shelter, but they turned her away despite having two beds available after the police warned that her situation could put other women in danger. The bed was given to another woman who was not even physically abused but had her car kicked by a man. She then turned to drug dealers for protection and encountered dangerous sociopathic predatory men. Eventually, she ended up in prison. She witnessed and experienced violence against women. Shockingly, 70% of women in prison have experienced some form of domestic violence or sexual assault before even going to prison. This is the reality for many women in America after being failed by society, as the country has the highest rate of incarceration in the world, and the number of incarcerated women is constantly growing. Despite all of this, she managed to find a way to heal and rebuild herself from scratch. She painted murals in prison and started an environmentally friendly clothing brand that features her artwork in plus sizes. Elizabeth Mikotowicz's mission is to make women feel stunning and empowered, so much so that they could face any challenge and come out victorious.
