Send us a textWhat happens when a simple strep throat infection triggers a devastating autoimmune response that attacks your brain? At age 13, Ethan Pompeo's life changed overnight when mysterious motor tics, compulsive behaviors, and overwhelming anxiety suddenly appeared, beginning a two-decade journey toward answers and healing.Ethan takes us through the frustrating reality of living with PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorders Associated with Strep) – a condition where strep antibodies cross the blood-brain barrier and create inflammation in the basal ganglia. His vivid descriptions of trying to complete simple tasks while battling uncontrollable tics paint a stark picture of the daily challenges faced by those with neurological autoimmune disorders. The path to diagnosis wasn't straightforward. Misdiagnosed with Tourette syndrome, Ethan became what he calls a "pill guinea pig," cycling through over 40 different medications by age 17, with side effects often worse than his symptoms. This experience fostered a deep skepticism of conventional medicine and pushed him toward finding his own solutions. What makes Ethan's story particularly compelling is his holistic approach to recovery. Moving to Colorado to work on an organic farm became a turning point, introducing him to lifestyle changes that would transform his health. His discovery that CBD's anti-inflammatory properties – not the psychoactive effects of cannabis – were addressing the root cause of his brain inflammation led to a comprehensive healing protocol combining anti-inflammatory diet, strategic supplementation, strength training, and cognitive behavioral therapy.Today, Ethan is 95% symptom-free and dedicated to helping others through PANDAS advocacy. His powerful message about accepting his condition rather than hiding it resonates beyond just those with autoimmune disorders: "The day I decided to be open about what I'm dealing with, it's like I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders."Whether you're battling chronic illness or supporting someone who is, Ethan's journey offers practical insights, scientific understanding, and above all, hope. Too many women walk into a psych’s office knowing something’s not right—and walk out with a label that only tells half the story. ADHD or PTSD? Or both? In this episode, Jane chats with senior psychologist, educator, and PhD candidate Amanda Moses, whose work centres on complex, highly masked neurodivergent presentations. Together, they tackle one of the most misunderstood clinical issues facing ADHD women: misdiagnosis, trauma-blaming, and the dangerous trend of withholding treatment. If you’ve ever been told to 'treat the trauma first' or felt like your neurodivergence was being ignored because of your childhood history, this one’s for you.

In this deeply reflective episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss sits down with poet, playwright, and soon-to-be author D.C. Copeland. Known for her literary achievements and her fierce voice for mental health and self-expression, D.C. shares a candid and powerful conversation about what it means to truly find yourself—especially in a world that expects conformity at every turn. From her early days writing poems as a child to becoming a Yale-educated writer mentored by Harold Bloom, D.C. takes us on a journey through creativity, personal awakening, and deep healing. Her upcoming book Societal Dropout is more than a manifesto—it's a call for reconnection, a return to stillness, and a nudge for all of us to examine what we truly believe, beyond what we've been told. D.C. and Chuck explore the concept of living in the “third dimension”—a linear, goal-oriented society—and how dropping out of it, even for a few moments each day, can unlock healing, peace, and perspective. Whether you're familiar with meditation or just starting to question the noise around you, this conversation offers tools, insights, and encouragement to pause and listen to your inner voice. This episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about healing through writing, the connection between mental health and societal structure, and the incredible power of stillness. What's Inside… Why “dropping out” isn't giving up—it's coming home to yourself. D.C. explains how stepping away from society's expectations can lead to deeper healing and clarity. The hidden cost of living in a linear, performance-driven world. Discover how constant striving impacts our mental health and how to break free from the cycle. How stillness and meditation transformed D.C.'s understanding of herself. Learn practical ways to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with your truth. What we're really running from—and why society doesn't want us to stop. A powerful exploration of discomfort, distraction, and the fear of facing our own thoughts. The difference between identity and performance. D.C. shares how letting go of labels helped her heal, and why so many of us feel lost in who we think we're supposed to be. You're not broken—you're waking up. Hear D.C.'s perspective on anxiety, trauma, and why your struggles might actually be signals of something beautiful unfolding. Mark explains how small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked due to its symptom overlap with other GI conditions, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). He outlines the evolution of diagnostic tools like hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide breath tests, the clinical relevance of new ICD-10 codes, and the FDA-approved treatment rifaximin. Mark emphasizes that the most effective treatment remains the elemental diet—now made more palatable thanks to food science innovation. NOT Medical advice. What's the difference between Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and Bell's Palsy? Bell's Palsy typically only affects the 7th cranial nerve. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can impact several other cranial nerves, such as the 7th (like Bells Palsy) and the 5th, 8th, 9th, and 10th cranial nerves. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can impact vision, eye closure, ear (along with balance), vertigo, hearing, and taste, for example.Everyone does not get a rash with Ramsay Hunt syndrome and there is an overlap of similar symptoms due to Ramsay Hunt impacting the same nerve that Bell's Palsy does. When training your horse, are you treating symptoms or addressing the real issue? In this episode, Stacy Westfall explains why accurate diagnosis is always the first step. She shares insights from decades of horse training, revealing how misdiagnosing a problem can lead to ineffective solutions, frustration, and even new challenges. Key takeaways: Misdiagnosing a training issue can lead to solutions that create new problems instead of resolving the root cause. Elite horses often mask training flaws, making it easy to apply ineffective methods to the average horse. Identifying the right starting point leads to improvement across all areas. Stacy created a free quiz to help riders pinpoint their biggest challenge and where to focus first. This episode explores how understanding both your horse's and your own thought processes can lead to lasting progress. Whether you're struggling with a specific issue or looking for a clearer training path, the first step is accurate diagnosis. Take the quiz at StacyWestfall.com to discover where to focus next.

In this episode of the Bendy Bodies Podcast, Dr. Linda Bluestein welcomes Dr. Kara Wada, an allergy and immunology expert, to explore Sjogren's disease and its connection to hypermobility, dysautonomia, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). They discuss why Sjogren's is one of the most underdiagnosed autoimmune conditions, its symptoms beyond dryness, and how it intertwines with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes). Dr. Wada also dives into Sjogren's diagnostic challenges, emerging treatments, nutrition strategies, and the role of inflammation in fatigue and pain. Whether you're navigating autoimmune symptoms or looking for practical tools to manage them, this episode is filled with expert insights and actionable advice. Takeaways: Sjogren's is Massively Underdiagnosed – Up to 75% of people with Sjogren's remain undiagnosed, in part because its symptoms extend far beyond dryness and don't always present in a textbook way. Autoimmune Conditions & EDS Are Connected – Sjogren's, POTS, and MCAS frequently overlap due to their shared impact on the immune and nervous systems, making diagnosis and treatment complex. Dryness is Just the Beginning – Sjogren's can cause neuropathy, fatigue, dysautonomia, gastrointestinal issues, and even a higher risk of lymphoma, making it more than just an inconvenience. Current Treatments Are Limited but Improving – There are no FDA-approved medications specifically for Sjogren's, but promising treatments are currently in phase 3 trials, offering hope for better management Nutrition & Lifestyle Matter – Avoiding ultra-processed foods, prioritizing hydration, and incorporating anti-inflammatory nutrients can help manage symptoms and support immune function. NVLD has made headlines recently after Gus Walz, son of Democratic VP Nominee Tim Walz, showed a lot of emotional expression and pride for his father at the DNC and it came out that Gus struggles with multiple disabilities, including NVLD. In this episode I discuss what NVLD is, the main areas of deficit of individuals with NVLD, as well as their strengths. I discuss how NVLD may present, common comorbidities, and spend time discussing the similarities and differences between NVLD and Autism. I end the episode by discussing how individuals with NVLD can be supported in school and work settings, as well as therapeutic interventions that are beneficial.
