Carolyn Harding with visual artist/activist Andrea Bowers and Lauren Leving, curator at Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, or commonly called moCa. On December 21, 2023, Andrea, you posted on Face Book, “A line from the Lake Erie bill of rights will be shining over Lake Erie on the science center across from the rock and roll hall of fame!” with photos and video clip from the installation of your work of Art, which is now hundreds of feet high installed on the Great Lakes Science Center, next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown, Cleveland, Ohio. Congratulations! That's a big and very public work of Art. Let's Talk about this huge Glowing Sign that says “Lake Erie has the Right to Exist, Flourish and Naturally Evolve” in Red, Green, Blue and Yellow Neon. Ohio-raised Andrea Bowers is a Los Angeles-based artist who has been recording and amplifying the work of activists present and past for more than two decades. Her multi-media practice includes drawing, video, sculpture, and installation work that foregrounds the experience of the people who dedicate their time and energy to the struggle for gender, racial, environmental, labor, and immigration justice and those who are directly affected by systemic inequality. Over time, her different bodies of work have become a document of the changing language, prerogatives, and dynamics of social justice movements. In 2021, a major mid-career survey of Bowers's work curated by Michael Darling and Connie Butler opened at the MCA Chicago and traveled to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in 2022. Other recent solo exhibitions include Grief and Hope, Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Germany and Light and Gravity, Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen, Germany. In September 2022, Bowers opened a solo exhibition including both new and existing work at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano as part of an exhibition program organized by the Fondazione Furla. Bowers is represented by Vielmetter Los Angeles, Andrew Kreps Gallery, Kaufmann Repetto, and Jessica Silverman Gallery. Lauren Leving (she/her) is a curator and writer based in Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH. Her work explores how creative practice can expand institutionally-rooted understandings of access. Currently, she is Curator-at-Large at the Museum of Contemporary Art (moCa) Cleveland; Associate Curator for the Orange County Museum of Art's 2024 California Biennial; and Co-Curator of Everlasting Plastics, originally presented in the U.S. Pavilion during the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Since joining moCa in 2019, Leving has organized projects including the Getting to Know You residency, which supported the production of Messages to Authorities (Go Away!), a largescale textile commission by Aram Han Sifuentes and Don't mind if I do, a group exhibition stewarded by Finnegan Shannon. Few Webcomics have been as prolific and long-running as Assigned Male, the brainchild of trans Québécois cartoonist Sophie Labelle. First releasing in October of 2014, Assigned Male portrays life through the eyes of a trans middle schooler named Stephie who alternately makes light of, and chafes under the realities of growing up a transgender child in a cisgender world. The webcomic series is still ongoing. In 2017, Labelle first squared off against the rising tide of anti-trans and fringe-right haters, when a book reading for her new comic, Dating Tips for Trans and Queer Weirdos, was cancelled under threats of violence. During this time, Labelle received death threats and was doxxed, which would ultimately lead to her resettling with her partner in Finland, where she lives today. Just like the melodies from your favorite songs, he is here, there and everywhere. It was in 1992 that Manasseh's family picked up and left Khartoum as refugees. Their destination was Nairobi Kenya. As a Sudanese growing up in Kenya, Manasseh recalls feeling foreign and knowing that his new environment wasn't exactly home. While at school, he would recite the Kenyan loyalty pledge and recognize a desire to sing the South Sudanese national anthem. Manasseh grew up in the church. His father was a pastor and his sisters sang in the choir and other occasions. His sisters' singing inspired him to experiment with his own artistic ability. His mother had a song for each of his siblings and he recalls music playing all around their home. Coming from a musical family his elder siblings nicknamed him “Jackson 6” as he would dance to the Jackson 5. Manasseh cites Bob Marley, Kanda Bongo Man, Coolio and Boys II Men as some of his earlier musical influences. In 2011, when South Sudan won its independence from Sudan, Manasseh decided to return home to be a part of a society that values and accepts him as their own. He could imagine future generations being able to sing their own national anthem. Not long after the 2011 referendum, fighting broke out in South Sudan. Many citizens believed the country had a promising future and the new conflict left them disheartened. Amongst those citizens was Manasseh. His frustration would later inspire him to become a human rights and peace activist. He became one of the co-founders of AnaTaban a youth led artist collective aiming to bring peace to South Sudan. As an Artist, Manasseh says “I do music not just to entertain, I do music to tell my story, to tell my truth.” In 2008, he released his first album Voice of My Heart which he describes as a fully gospel album that is “a conversation between me and my creator.” He took a long hiatus from music but released a few singles in 2014. In 2021, he released his second album Hagiga, the Arabic word for “truth”. Manasseh released the album while living in exile due to a government crackdown on activists. The 12 track album blends different sounds, messages and melodic moods with songs like Leadership Crisis, Gowi and Peace Sign. Some of the tracks on the album feature South Sudanese artists Natty P, Mandela DK, Kiden Lulu and a few others. In A Conversation with Manasseh Mathiang, he speaks on which South Sudanese Artists he'd like to collaborate with, mentioning his sister Ruth Mathiang and the legendary Emmanuel Kembe. He speaks on one of the most memorable performances of his career being in Nairobi where his son and nieces saw him perform and his son later joined him on stage. Manasseh hopes to influence the thoughts, culture and life of anyone who listens to his music. On this episode of the EBB podcast, we talk with Michelle Browder, artist, activist, and the creator of the Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsy Monument in Montgomery, Alabama, established to honor the three Mothers of Gynecology.   Michelle Browder is a nationally recognized artist, activist, and amplifier, bridging the racial divide through art, history, and conversation. Michelle's artwork has been exhibited in art galleries around the world, most notably, the Rosa Parks Museum located in Montgomery, Alabama. In September 2021, she created a monument to honor three enslaved women, Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, in Montgomery, Alabama. This monument is a reminder of the inhumane treatment and experimentation on enslaved Black bodies. The medical procedures that we have access to today in gynecology have been perfected because of them. The monument honors these Black women and all those that came after to correct the historical narrative around the beginnings of gynecology.   Michelle shares with us how she originally learned about the dark history of Anarcha, Lucy and Betsy and the inspiration to create a monument about the true founders of the field of gynecology. Not only is Michelle working to correct the history of gynecology, she discusses her progress and future plans to bring access, care, and healing to families and practitioners in the 21st Century, at the same site of the torture of Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsy, the Mothers of Gynecology. In the words of Michelle, y'all ain't ready! We take it for granted that entertainers can—and probably should—advocate for the causes they believe in, political and otherwise. That wasn't always the case: at one time, entertainers were supposed to entertain, and little else. Harry Belafonte, who died on April 25th at the age of ninety-six, pioneered the artist-activist approach. One of the most celebrated singers of his era, he had a string of huge hits—“The Banana Boat Song,” “Mama Look a Boo Boo,” “Jamaica Farewell”—while appearing as the rare Black leading man in the movies. At the same time, Belafonte used his platform to influence public opinion. He was a key figure in the civil-rights movement, a confidant of Martin Luther King's; a generation later, he worked with Nelson Mandela to help bring down apartheid in South Africa. Belafonte joined The New Yorker Radio Hour in 2016, when the staff writer Jelani Cobb visited him at his office in Manhattan. This segment originally aired September 30, 2016.

Food and the environment are inextricably linked—everything we eat has a footprint. Since the 1950s, industrialized food production and modern-day overconsumption have contributed to climate change, environmental degradation, and economic depression. Still, many innovators are working to find sustainable ways to feed the world's population. Food as a means to create positive change has long inspired Taiji Terasaki, a Japanese American artist and activist based in Hawaii. Raised in a family of scientists and creatives, Taiji combines the best of both worlds to create work across a wide variety of mediums. From large-scale installations to pioneering “mist” photography, Taiji's cutting-edge presentations emphasize the urgency and importance of environmental conservation. On today's podcast, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power chats with Taiji about the artist's mission to improve life on Earth for all its inhabitants. “Believe me, I never dreamed I would be an activist,” Taiji tells NOT REAL ART. “I never dreamed that I would be [sharing] my opinion on a podcast, but what I'm learning is [how artists] can find a voice.” Taiji also discusses his latest project, Recipes to Nourish Communities, an interactive mural on display at the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles' recently renovated headquarters. The mural invites viewers to consider food as nourishment for the body, a direct exchange between themselves and their environment. “I really believe that the visual arts should make a difference in our world and what our future will become,” Taiji says. Join us today as Taiji and Scott discuss the most pressing issues of our time: food insecurity, the organizations that seek to tackle it, and the ultimate resilience of the natural world. “When you see what nature is capable of, how it can rebound, it is amazing,” Taiji tells Scott. Don't miss this crucial conversation on the health and wellbeing of planet Earth. In Today's Podcast EpisodeTaiji Terasaki discusses…What artists and scientists have in commonHow an unconventional childhood impacted his innovative art practiceWhy raising his own children forced him to consider the world they'll inheritHis advice for building a studio team and taking criticism from galleristsHow Recipes to Nourish Communities tackles food insecurity in LAThe four organizations that benefit from Recipes to Nourish CommunitiesThe concept of rewilding and the importance of biodiversity in food productionWhy he ultimately feel positive about climate change and our ability to stem its rising tideFor more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/taiji-terasaki

Shira Richter is a researcher, filmmaker, and multimedia artist whose work on motherhood, mothers' work, and living in a military state confronts the dominant narrative. She's been censored for covering topics such as friendship between Israeli and Palestinian women and postpartum depression. Shira notes that mainstream media represents the interest of the state, whether that's about healthcare, war or women's bodies. The media, like the state, wants ordinary people to carry out embittered battles on their behalf. Shira is no stranger to controversy, as one of the original signers of the 2015 open letter to MANA authored by Mary Lou Singleton, which protested the removal of the words women and mother in their educational materials. In this episode we explore the intersection of the scamdemic, transgender ideology, industrial birth and female erasure within the context of Israel and the expectations of Israeli Jewish mothers to circumcise their baby boys and send them to war. Originally from south inner-city Dublin, she now lives on the Inis Oirr, one of the beautiful Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway. Grace has an incredible portfolio of work and award-winning achievements to her name. She has created films, plays, live performances and large-scale projects with people who had never done art before. She has made art about all facets of addiction, and topics such as sex work, social housing, political conflict and corruption, abortion, and the legacy of Church and State abuse in Ireland, mostly with survivors of Magdalene Laundries. Grace writes on her website, “I make art because I know it changes lives for the better”. We're going to dive into some of these areas and more in this rich conversation. We also talk a good bit about emotional health and some of the challenges Grace has been through and I want to say if you find yourself in need of help or support, please do reach out to a friend, a GP, a relevant helpline, or support service in whatever country you are in. It's also important that we look out for each other these days when so many people are under pressure.

The Wildcast EP35 Tomas Leonor -Walking Across the Philippines Tomas Leonor is an Artist Activist and Outdoorsman in 2011 he was awarded as one of the Pitong Pinoy's by Yahoo Philippines an award that recognises Filipinos that have touched the lives of many, made and impact on society, and spread hope to the country. I've known Tomas since our days volunteering as member of the Greenpeace Boat Team and he is someone that definitely ticks all those boxes. It all started with a single step a step that would change so many people's lives. On January 11, 2010 he took that tentative first step in Pagudpod, Ilocos Norte and after 58 days found himself at the southern tip of Luzon in Matnog, Sorsogon walking 1300km entirely on foot and raising 1.5 Million pesos for Children with Cancer. In April 2011 he started walking again this time through the Visayan Islands of the Philippines crossing 7 of the Philippine Islands walking 1241.5kms in 54 days. His walk not only inspired the children in the cancer wards to fight for their lives it inspired hundreds of other individuals to start their own walks that would echo across the globe for different advocacies -most famous of which was the climate walk of Environmental Activist brothers Yeb and AG Saño after typhoon Yolanda. Walking has brought not only new life to many children, it brought new meaning to Tomas' life -and he has never been the same since. ------- As part of our evolution in this second season we are working towards making the Wildcast more sustainable by creating avenues where listeners can help us continue to provide you all with these amazing conversations so you can show your support for the Wildcast by buying us a coffee through www.buymeacoffee.com/Wildcast. Baba Musah Swallah is a professional Ghanaian visual artist born and raised in the densely populated community of Nima, which largely Muslim community, where people of different faiths live together harmoniously in the heart of Accra, Ghana. His paintings, murals, and mixed media works serve as tools that are designed to promote self-expression, create awareness, provoke dialogue, and transform society. His paintings reflect his experience in various African cultures and his main objective is to render the daily lives of people on canvas. He does so by presenting the aesthetic value of colorful scenes while telling the story of various African societies and the challenges they face. The origins of his artistic ideas and inspiration are often spawned from his experiences in Nima. The creation of his artwork is based partially on aesthetics however, the message that he is trying to convey to his audience is vital in keeping the integrity of each piece. A majority of his work contains a narrative, one that he uses to communicate to audiences in order to create awareness and expose ideas and conditions that would otherwise remain unknown. Issues conveyed in his artwork include those that influence daily life in Nima in addition to those that speak to larger social conditions across Africa and the globe. Musah is a contemporary mixed media artist. Currently, he creates paintings on repurposed wooden panels and mixed media pieces consisting of recycled materials such as wine corks and African wax prints. The irregularity of the wood Musah uses has become an important aspect of the composition. He collects wood from various sources using scraps and narrow wooden planks, which he fits together to create a painting surface. In the creation of his works, Musah slices, sketches, carves, and paints. His art also has a special emphasis on honoring black beauty. Celebrating the rich complexion of black people, the subjects of Musah's portraits are depicted with dark skin. Musah employs vivid colors and layered imagery, striking emotions and conveying a deep spiritual presence in the portraits he creates. #BlackExcellenceisGlobal https://www.instagram.com/b.musah/?hl=en --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mastermine-mrg/message

Today, artist/activist Madame Gandhi speaks with entrepreneur Sana Javeri Kadri about her work with Indian farmers and the recent farmer protests in India. In Diaspora Co's India Farmer Protest Primer, Sana writes, "In September, the governing party of India pushed through three farm & ag bills that were highly contested by the opposition, without consulting the very farmers that make up 60% of the Indian workforce, who these three bills would most impact. The bills deregulate the farming sector, and create room for corporations to privatize the industry rapidly, without much oversight, and with absurd clauses that specifically prevent farmers from pursuing litigation against corporations for contract violations or abuses." -- Sana Javeri Kadri is the founder of Diaspora Co., a direct trade spice company working towards a radically equitable, sustainable, and more delicious spice supply chain. Born and raised in Mumbai, India amidst a big family of idealists and architects, she has over a decade of experience in every facet of the food industry and supply chain from farm worker, to line cook, to marketing consultant. She founded Diaspora Co. in 2017 and it has quickly become a nationally acclaimed, beloved food brand that supports over 300 small Indian farmers and laborers and growing, and aims to set a new standard for what equity in our food system can look like. She currently lives between Mumbai, India and Oakland, California. Madame Gandhi is an artist and activist whose mission is to celebrate gender liberation. She has toured drumming for M.I.A, Thievery Corporation and most recently Oprah on her 2020 Vision Stadium Tour with morning dance party Daybreaker. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Georgetown University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She has been listed as Forbes Music 30 Under 30 and is a 2020 TED Fellow. Her uplifting music and mathy beats have been critically acclaimed by The New York Times, Billboard, NPR and more.
