This week's Practical Horseman Podcast, sponsored by Horse Week, is with Hannah Sue Hollberg. The five-star eventer has a lot on her radar right now. Earlier this year, she took over the ride on Thoroughbred gelding Business Ben from fellow eventer Allison Springer and has spent the past nine months fostering a new partnership with him. The pair has some big dates on their competition calendar this fall—and hopefully another one in the spring of 2025. Among her other talented horses are Capitol H I M and Harbour Pilot. Hannah Sue retired her longtime partner Harbour Pilot following his last five-star run at the 2022 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fairhill, where the pair finished in 10th. Hannah decided to retire the then 19-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, after their 12-year partnership to ensure “William” ended his career healthy and happy—and to give him the opportunity to enjoy lower-impact work. Hannah Sue and Capitol H I M—affectionately known as “Cheeto”—made their five-star debut at the 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and competed in the CCI5* at last year's Maryland Five Star, where they finished fourth and were the highest-placed U.S combination. After serving as a working student with Karen and David O'Connor from 2008 to 2011, Hannah Sue went on to become a team gold and individual silver medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games aboard Harbour Pilot. She also represented the U.S. in a number of European events, gained plenty of five-star experience and most recently placed third at the MARS Bromont CCI4*-L with Capitol H I M last June. In today's podcast, we talked to Hannah Sue about what's new on her horizons, the incredible partnerships she shares with her horses, her training philosophies—and how she finally overcame a lack of confidence through perseverance and her passion for eventing horses. Philly is a city of neighborhoods, and those neighborhoods are always changing — including the way written language is used in public spaces. Daniel Guarin is a PhD candidate in Hispanic linguistics at Temple University, and he looked at over 3,000 signs in three heavily Latino neighborhoods: Fairhill's “The Golden Block,” Olney, and the Italian Market area. Host Trenae Nuri chats with Guarin about his findings, and how these neighborhoods have evolved linguistically. Read more about Guarin's study here. Want some more Philly news? Siobhan McSweeney plays one of the best small screen characters at the moment, Sister Michael, and just took part in #DearIreland, a massive and innovative project to keep the Abbey Theatre in our lives. The Abbey commissioned writers like Enda Walsh, Sonya Kelly and Stacey Gregg, to write five- to 10-minute monologues. Each script is performed and filmed by 50 actors, often at home including Brendan Gleeson, Nicola Coughlan, Seána Kerslake and Siobhan McSweeney. The piece performed by Siobhan McSweeney recalled the famous city character, Katty Barry - a famous Cork character who owned and ran a shebeen on Dalton's Avenue near the Coal Quay. In the performance, Siobhan played Katty as she might be today - she died in 1982 - and how she would be coping with the current pandemic. Watch her performance here: Katty became so famous that she had a verse composed in her honour in the famous Cork anthem, The Boys of Fairhill. Alison and Siobhan also caught up on season three of Derry Girls and how Siobhan's getting on in lockdown in London. Listen back by pressing the play button at the top of the screen. Weekend Breakfast with Alison Curtis, Saturdays and Sundays from 8am!

Chris Stafford returns with news and interviews from around the world of equestrian sport by counting down to this year’s Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event and featuring some of the first timers to the only 5 star competition in North America. The first guest is California based Frankie Thierot Stutes who had a bumper season last year with her 11 year old Oldenburg gelding Chatwin when they culminated by winning the FairHill three star event. I spoke to Frankie after her dressage at the Galway Downs International 4star short event last week which was the third outing of the year for the partnership as they prepare for the big event. Later in program we will hear from Katherine Bateson-Chandler who, together with the 14 year old Dutch gelding Alcazar, won the FEI four star Grand Prix Freestyle last week in week 12 of the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida scoring a personal best with her long time partner. The World Cup Dressage and Jumping Finals takes place this week in Gothenburg, Sweden and if you’ve been following the World Cup season it may seem that if Germany’s Isabell Werth is on form she will always be the one to beat and certainly with five World Cup titles to her name the doyen of dressage will be giving it all she has with Weihegold to make it a hat-trick of World Cup titles. There are combinations who could deny her the title again including one of the US ladies and Laura Graves will know this is her best chance to add this to her career highlights with Verdades. Veteran show jumper Beezie Madden is also going for a hat-trick and will be under no illusion of the stiff competition the popular American rider faces if she is to bring it home again with Breitling. She has three other women joining her on the US contingent the 20 year old Eve Jobs and twenty-one year old Kelli Cruciotti (21) will be two of the youngest riders in action along with Georgina Bloomberg. American women have a great record at the World Cup Show Jumping Final. Melanie Smith won the title in 1983, Leslie Burr Lenehan in 1986) and Katharine Burdsall in 1987. The World Cup Finals mark the end of the indoor season so once the dust has settled in Gothenburg the focus will turn to the spring season of Nations Cups and selection for the Pan American Games which take place in Lima, Peru this summer and the European Championships. Both competitions are the last chance for nations to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. Everyone wins when neighborhood reinvestment reinforces -- rather than undermines -- the diversity of a community. Penn's Fels Institute of Government has released a report detailing how the redevelopment of vacant property in eastern North Philadelphia is transforming the neighborhood. The report - "Neighborhood Stabilization and Safety in East North Philadelphia" -- documents the success of Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha- Association of Puerto Ricans on the March, APM, in working with public agencies to reduce crime, raise incomes, and attract new working households to the area studied between 1998 and 2010. The full report is available at: http://www.fels.upenn.edu/apm_stabilization The survey area APM target area is in North Philadelphia, east of Broad Street, bounded by North 4th Street, North 9th Street, Jefferson Street and York Street. Lead author Christopher Kingsley, a research associate at Fels, wrote the report under the supervision of Fels Institute Senior Consultant John Kromer. They studied neighborhood crime data from Penn's Cartographic Modeling Lab, U.S. census information and ESRI and PolicyMap demographic projections. "When I was the city's housing director in the 1990's, we inventoried all of the vacant lots in APM's target area and found well over 2100," Kromer says. "I had an opportunity with Fels to come back 10 years later to find out that more than half were developed or improved." In the 1980s, the area was known as Fairhill. It experienced a 20% drop in population between 1989 and 1999 and lost its identity. "It had a rather unimaginative official name in the city planning books-the Temple urban renewal area, " Kromer says. The neighborhood is regaining the character it lost. According to the report, less than one percent of residents moved out of the area between 1999 and 2009. Census projections estimate that the neighborhood's ratio of Anglo Americans, African-Americans and Hispanic residents has remained consistent through the previous decade. Households in the area are about five percent wealthier than they were a decade ago and residents are better educated. Nilda Ruiz, APM president and CEO, grew up just outside the survey area, at 3rd and Diamond Streets. "For years this neighborhood was easily ignored and unseen. A lot of the houses were deteriorating," she says. "Today green spaces are replacing vacant lots, new LEED certified housing is under construction and a community owned supermarket employs community residents." Soon the neighborhood that has gone so long without a name will have one. APM is undertaking a quality of life study. Ruiz says one of study's goals is to have community residents to come up with a name for their neighborhood. Video by Kurtis Sensenig Text by Jacquie Posey
