On this episode of The Lawcast our hosts revisit the January 4, 1999 episode of Monday Nitro, featuring the infamous Fingerpoke of Doom.
On this REMIX edition of 83 Weeks, Eric and Conrad take us back to the infamous "Finger Poke Of DOOM!" episode of Monday Nitro. Find out what Eric thinks of this angle with the benefit of 20 years hindsight. We address the rumor that Goldberg shot down the first idea for his angle with Liz and how Eric thinks Goldberg and Liz did in their acting roles that night. Plus, Conrad presses Eric to defend the silliness of a "Hogan running for President" angle, clarification on Kevin Nash's role behind the scenes, why Eric put him in that position, when the plan was in place to hand Hogan the title, who got Goldberg a 1000% raise from WCW, an incredible story you've probably never heard before about a huge mainstream deal Turner turned down, and a tidbit about a word you couldn't say on WCW TV that you just will not believe! Of all the things on this episode to discuss, only one decision made that night really mattered and it led to 600,000 folks changing the channel. Conrad breaks down "butts in the seats" in detail and makes Eric own it. Oh and Eric buries two legends in the business to the point it leaves Conrad speechless. Eric is fired up and ready to breakdown the FINGER POKE OF DOOM! One of the most infamous nights in the Monday Night Wars. Mick Foley wins the world title while WCW pulls the bait and switch. Was Raw actually a good show? Why did WCW put Goldberg in an awkward position?
The infamous "Fingerpoke of Doom" takes place on this week's episode of Nitro. Goldberg gets arrested, Hulk Hogan gets a title match, history gets made in the Nitro main event. The WWF also create history when Mick Foley gets himself a WWF title shot against The Rock.
All Elite Wrestling's All In at Wembley in London is less than a week away and our hosts discuss each match going into AEW's biggest event. Many saying that this is a make or break milestone for the 4 year old company, and with so much riding on the outcome of the very same PPV that created AEW, will it be able to shut down the critics and become as legendary as Tony Khan says it will be? Or could this be AEW's Fingerpoke of Doom, mimicking a debunked wrestling promotion that once had a chance at challenging WWE? Take a break and have a cup of coffee with our hosts Jamie (@abaconparty) and Mark (@gunkdudley) as we discuss Wrestling news, rumors and more! Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Lawcast. This time our hosts begin a new season covering WCW's historic collapse in the year 1999. We begin with the first Nitro of the new year, in which we've been promised Kevin Nash will defend the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Bill Goldberg. But as we all know, WCW has an insane twist planned instead.
The year is 1999 and Kevin Nash is in charge of writing this episode of WCW Thunder! The Finger Poke of Doom just happened and The nWo has reformed as a super group called the nWo Elite. However, there is another group of nWo guys who are getting fed up with the way things are, the nWo B-Team. This group consisted of Stevie Ray, Horace Hogan, Vincent, Brian Adams, and Scott Norton! As we kick off WCW Thunder, the nWo B-Team is getting tired of waiting on the nWo Wolfpac Elite to arrive at the building so they send Horace Hogan out to the parking garage to wait for them to arrive. When the nWo limo arrives, it's anything but the nWo, it's actually the 4 Horsemen and they beat the crap out of Horace Hogan! Later that night the nWo B-Team challenged the 4 Horsemen to a 6 man tag match for the Main Event! As this is going on, Vincent changes his shirt from the nWo black and white to the red and black, causing chaos within the group. Also, Ric Flair is in charge of WCW as he recently shaved Eric Bischoff's head and we are building to Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan at WCW SuperBrawl IX for the WCW World Championship! Ric Flair is the new President of WCW as we head into 1999 and one of the biggest WCW Nitro episodes of all time. It's Goldberg vs Kevin Nash inside the Georgia Dome with 40,000 people in attendance. The match never happens as Goldberg gets arrested on charges of stalking Ms. Elizabeth! Goldberg is taken to the police station for questioning. This makes Kevin Nash pissed off, as he thinks Hulk Hogan is up to it. However, it turns out that Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan have been working together. They get in the ring for the main event and The Finger Poke Of Doom happens! This is the night WCW lost the Monday Night War! The nWo reforms with the Wolfpac & Black & White! Also, Tony Schiavone spoils the results of Mick Foley winning the WWF Title on Monday Night Raw as Mankind! This backfired and everyone turned over to watch WWF! This was truly an epic fail moment! Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Lawcast. This week it's SuperBrawl 1999, a show from the very end of WCW's boom period. In fact, this might be the very last WCW pay-per-view you could call a success. But it's a staggering success, as they draw almost 500,000 buys for the first battle between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair in years. What was it about this matchup that was so appealing to fans this time around? And how did this show succeed so much if the Fingerpoke of Doom had already killed WCW?It's a show of questions and mysteries, the biggest mystery of all is how this company would go out of business only two years later.
We've decided to watch some more WCW once again. This time we watched the Nitro where Goldberg took on Hollywood Hogan for the WCW Championship, Halloween Havoc 1998 and the infamous ‘Fingerpoke of Doom'
Tom & Jeff do a deep dive into this wild night!
So long, "Stagger" Lee Marshall... we hardly knew ye. "The Professor" "Iron" Mike Tenay is now the third man on the Thunder commentary team. Since the last episode of Thunder, almost 3 weeks have passed since then we've seen The Fingerpoke of DOOM!, "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan join the Wolfpac, Macho Man Randy Savage make his television return, and Eric Bischoff defeating Ric Flair at Starrcade, and the LWO being reintegrated into WCW. Then on Thunder, we see recaps and the aftermath of all the events mentioned above plus a look into Raven's upbringing and the debut of his good friend James (aka: The Sandman... yes, ECW's Sandman. Yeah, the beer and cigarettes guy. He's James now.) Follow us on Instagram @GetItAgainPodcast Got 2 (or more) words for us? Email us at GetItAgainPodcast@gmail.com Artwork by Lucy Samuel
It's' the Finger Poke of Doom! It's the "Butts in Seats" comment. It's all here! The reason WCW lost the Monday Night Wars. Not so fast! Even though those two incidents have resonated among wrestling fans for decades, the main reason WCW lost the war is actually all wrapped up in this episode. This Monday Nitro episode sucked! Even though on this show were legendary greats like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Charlotte Flair (as a young Ashley in the ring with her dad), Kevin Nash, Goldberg, Scott Hall, Konan, Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Jericho, Lex Luger, Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Eddie Guerrero and more there were too many long, drawn out vignettes and too little pro wrestling. However, there is an interesting backstory to all this, and it has to do with the ratings when Goldberg finally made it to the arena. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. WCW hit its stride in late 1995 and grew to become a juggernaut in Pro Wrestling. It's amazing how fast it fell from that monumental high! The second part of the long requested History of WCW concludes on this episode as Riordan, Dan & Sam discuss the Monday Night Wars, the nWo, Sting, DDP and yes unfortunately, The Fingerpoke of Doom, Vince Russo and David Arquette... This week, we look back at the finger poke heard around the world. Remember when Hulk Hogan won the WCW title (again) by simply tapping on Kevin Nash? The whole thing is far weirder than you remember and we're going into detail. Then, it's WBF time as we look back at the strange history of Vince McMahon's bodybuilding venture, the World Bodybuilding Federation. From the creation of "bodystars" to the time the bodybuilders fought WWE wrestlers on an episode of Family Feud, there's a lot to dig through. Marty Scurll GONE from Ring of Honor as his fall from grace is now complete... where this renewed Shinsuke Nakamura push may be leading on Smackdown... And speaking of The McMahons, Shane announces a very special main event for tonight's show: a Corporate Royal Rumble pitting members of The Corporation against members of DX, with the winner being awarded the #30 position in the Royal Rumble match. In what is likely one of the most bizarre segments in the history of the WWF/E, The Undertaker returns after a month-long absence to perform an unholy ritual on Dennis Knight. Triple-H steps into the ring with Edge in a match which we surprisingly only end up getting a handful of times over the next 12 years despite both men's lengthy tenures with the company. As a counterpunch to Tony Schiavone's "butts in seats" line from "Nitro" last week, we get introduced to the legendary character who is simply known as..... Gillberg. The New Age Outlaws face Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart, with the winning team earning the right to become the #1 contenders for the WWF Tag Team Titles. Val Venis sets his sights on a lovely young woman in the crowd, but he gets more than he bargained for when it turns out that he's attempting to seduce the sister of a fellow wrestler. Because D'Lo Brown was somewhat responsible for causing her miscarriage last week, Terri Runnels forces D'Lo to fight his own best friend: Mark Henry. X-Pac puts his European Title on the line against the newly Head-less Al Snow. Plus, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin continues to wreak havoc, Chyna's friend Sammy is still hanging around, and Shane helps Vince train for the Royal Rumble by having him chase a chicken in the snow! Meanwhile over on "Nitro," WCW follows up their "Fingerpoke of Doom" episode with three hours of television that are somehow even worse than last week's show! Enjoying the Podcast? Hulk Hogan has said the "Finger Poke of Doom" was the "beginning of the end of WCW," and no one really disagreed with him... or did they? Find out what Eric Bischoff thinks of this angle with the benefit of nearly 20 years hindsight. We address the rumor that Goldberg shot down the first idea for his angle with Liz and how Eric thinks Goldberg and Liz did in their acting roles that night. Plus Conrad presses Eric to defend the silliness of a "Hogan running for President" angle, clarification on Kevin Nash's role behind the scenes, why Eric put him in that position, when the plan was in place to hand Hogan the title, who got Goldberg a 1000% raise from WCW, an incredible story you've probably never heard before about a huge mainstream deal Turner turned down, and a tidbit about a word you couldn't say on WCW TV that you just will not believe! Of all the things on this episode to discuss, only one decision made that night really mattered and it led to 600,000 folks changing the channel. Conrad breaks down "butts in the seats" in detail and makes Eric has to own it. Oh and Eric buries two legends in the business to the point it leaves Conrad speechless. Eric is fired up and ready to breakdown the FINGER POKE OF DOOM! Did you know you could be enjoying 83 Weeks days, even a week in advance on ADFreeShows.com?
