Ron Simmons is a retired American professional wrestler and former football player, best known for making history as the first African American world champion in professional wrestling. Born on May 15, 1958, in Perry, Georgia, Simmons first gained recognition as a standout college football player before transitioning to a legendary wrestling career. Simmons was a dominant force at Florida State University (FSU), where he played as a defensive lineman under coach Bobby Bowden. He was a two-time All-American and later had brief stints in the NFL (Cleveland Browns), USFL, and CFL before moving into professional wrestling. Simmons made his wrestling debut in the mid-1980s but rose to fame in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he achieved his greatest milestone. On August 2, 1992, he defeated Big Van Vader to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, making history as the first recognized Black world champion in a major wrestling promotion. After WCW, Simmons joined the WWE (then WWF) in the mid-90s, where he became famous as Faarooq, the leader of the influential faction The Nation of Domination, which played a key role in shaping the careers of stars like The Rock. Later, he teamed up with Bradshaw (JBL) to form The Acolytes Protection Agency (APA), a fan-favorite tag team known for their hard-hitting style and backstage poker segments. Simmons retired from in-ring competition in the mid-2000s but remained a beloved WWE personality, often making special appearances with his iconic catchphrase: "DAMN!" He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in the industry. Beyond wrestling, Simmons is recognized for breaking barriers, mentoring young wrestlers, and inspiring generations of athletes. Football CareerWrestling CareerLegacy & Retirement

Seldom does one person affect an entire industry the way Eric Bischoff has. When Ted Turner owned World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the early ‘90s he had a few different old-school bookers in charge like Ole Anderson and Bill Watts. But when Turner changed things up and tapped a third-string announcer with a sales background as the new executive in charge of WCW, everything changed for the Atlanta-based promotion. Bischoff's first major move was asking for a primetime spot to go head-to-head with the World Wrestling Federation (today's WWE). That was unheard of in the industry and quickly Monday Night Nitro was started on TNT. And the “Monday Night Wars” were underway.

From her days working in colleges and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) to her work today as a podcaster, therapist, and coach, Lisa shows vulnerability about her life events that formed the strong woman she is today. Lisa Mustard is a LMFT and Coach in South Carolina. Wife to Billy and mom to 2 girls, she has been practicing since 2006 and has worked with a military branch for the past 10 years. 3 years ago, she decided to start a podcast after sitting in a conference for 2 days straight. (I'll share more of that story in the episode if that's ok.) She creates continuing education for therapists via podcasting...aka podcourses. She also coaches women experiencing midlife struggles. When not seeing clients or working on her podcast, she chauffeurs her daughters to volleyball practice and games, hits up the gym or explores the gorgeous South Carolina hiking trails with her husband. Daffney began her professional wrestling career in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1999. David Giangrande and Mark Radulich provide WrestleMania 38 Night 2 2022 Alternative Commentary! The Montreal Screwjob (also called the Montreal Incident;French: Le Coup Tordu de Montréal lit. Montreal's Twisted Coup) was an infamous unscripted professional wrestling incident that occurred on November 9, 1997, at the Survivor Series pay-per-view at the Molson Centre. Vince McMahon (World Wrestling Federation owner) and his employees covertly manipulated the outcome of the match between Bret Hart, the reigning WWF Champion, and Shawn Michaels. The manipulation – a "shoot screwjob" in professional wrestling parlance – occurred without Hart's knowledge and as a result he lost the title to Michaels in his last WWF match before departing for rival promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Their name was taken from the rap group of the same name, and prior to becoming a team, Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge had a long-standing feud on the independent circuit. In addition, the two wrestled each other under their former ring names the Cheetah Kid and Johnny Rotten in a dark match at the first TV tapings for WWF Monday Night Raw on January 11, 1993, eight months before they would debut as a tag team in ECW. Starrcade (1997) was the fifteenth annual Starrcade professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, produced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW) on December 28, 1997, at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. The matches revolved around the ongoing storyline between WCW and the New World Order (nWo) organization. The main event was between Hollywood Hogan and Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, with Hogan representing the nWo and Sting representing WCW. The match culminated a year-long buildup of their feud.[3] The match ended in controversy over the referee's pinfall count, and their feud continued after the event surrounding this. Other matches included Larry Zbyszko and Eric Bischoff for the control of WCW Monday Nitro, and Curt Hennig and Diamond Dallas Page for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship.[1] The event became the biggest-grossing pay-per-view in WCW history. Despite its success, however, the card is seen as pivotal to the downfall of WCW, as it set a tone for backstage dissension and poor creative decisions going forward. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Roughly two decades ago, Hollywood crossed over with professional wrestling, when the first time in history, an actor became the world heavyweight champion as David Arquette won the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) title on an episode of Thursday Night Thunder that aired on TBS. This was all in part to Arquette being a lifelong wrestling fan and the cross promotion for his then upcoming film, Ready to Rumble, with co-star Scott Caan. We spoke with Arquette about his new documentary entitled, You Cannot Kill David Arquette, where the man who has had a very successful career not only in front of, but also behind the camera decides to return to the squared circle for another wrestling run. We talk death matches, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and my prediction that by 2022, David Arquette will come full circle on TNT and win the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) World Heavyweight Championship, making him a two time world champ. Arquette is an amazingly talented and humble human being that is reflected in this interview and You Cannot Kill David Arquette is a fascinating documentary. It's part work, part shoot and all heart. You Cannot Kill David Arquette comes to VOD and Apple TV on Friday, August 28, 2020 and is definitely worth your hard earned money. The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is an American professional wrestling promotion and former governing body operating via its parent company Lightning One, Inc.Founded in 1948, the NWA began as a governing body for a group of independent professional wrestling promotions, the heads of which made up the Board of Directors. The group operated a territory system which sanctioned various championships, recognized one world champion, participated in talent exchanges, and collectively protected the territorial integrity of member promotions. Prior to the 1960s it acted as the sole governing body for most of professional wrestling. It remained the largest and most influential body in wrestling until the mid-1980s by which time most of the original member promotions went out of business as a result of the World Wrestling Federation's national expansion. In September 1993, the largest remaining member promotion, World Championship Wrestling (WCW), left the NWA for the second and final time. The NWA would continue as a loose coalition of independent promotions, with NWA: Total Nonstop Action (NWA:TNA) given exclusivity over its World Heavyweight and Tag Team championships from June 2002 to May 2007.In August 2012, the NWA discontinued its memberships and started licensing its brand to wrestling promotions. As of 2019, the NWA is no longer a governing body and has since become a singular wrestling promotion. NWA - Into the Fire was a professional wrestling pay-per-view, scripted and produced by the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) that took place on December 14, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. This was the first pay-per-view event produced exclusively by NWA since becoming a singular wrestling promotion. Vincent James Russo (born January 24, 1961) is an American author, podcaster, professional wrestling booker, writer, and pundit. He is notable for his tenures with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in creative roles.[1] Russo occasionally made appearances as an on-screen authority figure, and professional wrestler, in WCW and TNA. His writing style, which emphasizes shock value and "swerves" over in-ring action, has made him a controversial figure within the industry. During a self-booked in-ring career in WCW, Russo became a one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion,[2] scored televised singles victories over future WWE Hall of Famers Ric Flair and Booker T (the latter to win his world title), and never lost a match.[3] He also placed himself in multiple pay-per-view main events in WCW and TNA.[3] Since April 2015, he has hosted a daily podcast with his company: "Vince Russo's The Brand".

As a consequence of the heated ratings competition between World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), the spectacle had taken over Monday nights on prime-time cable television. But in a departure from the family-friendly programming produced by the last industry boom - the 1980s wave, which made household names of Hulk Hogan, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Andre the Giant - the new era of wrestling combined stunning athleticism with a raunchy sex appeal, engrossing story lines and novel production techniques that reflected a changing society and its shifting values. Once again, wrestling was a ubiquitous phenomenon - only this time, it seemed as though the fad would never end. With both WCW and WWF expanding into other forms of entertainment - movies, video games, music and the like - the potential for growth appeared to be limitless. But with uncertainty surrounding its corporate future, and increasingly uninspired programming eroding its audience, WCW stood on the verge of collapse. Three years into a five-year plan devised by its charismatic leader - a former Blue Ribbon Foods salesman named Eric Bischoff - the company whose unexpected ascension initiated the entire boom was operating on borrowed time. For by the end of the five-year plan, WCW ceased to exist. But NITRO is a story about much more than WCW and the Monday Night Wars. It is a story of an era, a time in which the media and cultural landscape precipitated - and later supported - pro wrestling's mainstream popularity. It is a story of how a company made in the image of an intuitively brilliant risk-taker betrayed its original promise. It is a story of how a handful of men, each struggling with their own limitations, facilitated a public obsession that changed television forever. And so, with the inside knowledge of a journalist, the perspective of a historian, and the passion of a fan, author Guy Evans provides a fresh look at an unfortunate inevitability - the downfall of World Championship Wrestling. Bolstered by exclusive interviews with over 120 former TBS and WCW employees, NITRO is the definitive picture of the last wrestling boom. Featuring exclusive interviews and comments from: Eric Bischoff, fmr. President of World Championship Wrestling; Harvey Schiller, fmr. President of Turner Sports; Jamie Kellner, fmr. THE WAIT IS OVER! NITRO: The Incredible Rise and Inevitable Collapse of Ted Turner's WCW is here!!! 175,000+ words, 56 chapters, and more new info than you'll believe! Paperback: https://wcwnitrobook.com/item/nitro-the-incredible-rise-and-inevitable-collapse-of-ted-turners-wcw-paperback E-book: https://wcwnitrobook.com/item/nitro-the-incredible-rise-and-inevitable-collapse-of-ted-turners-wcw-e-book Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/NITRO-Incredible-Inevitable-Collapse-Turners/dp/0692139176/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Synopsis In April 1999, Entertainment Weekly asked its readers what many Americans were surely wondering to themselves: how did wrestling get so big? Stevie Ray- Harlem HeatLash Huffman[5] (born August 22, 1958) is an American semi-retired professional wrestler, better known by his ring name, Stevie Ray. Stevie Ray is best known for his seven-year tenure with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1993 to 2000, where he was one-half of the tag team Harlem Heat, with his younger brother Booker T. Huffman, better known as Booker T. They won the WCW World Tag Team Championship a record ten times.Huffman is also a one-time WCW World Television Champion.[1][4] Among other events, he headlined Fall Brawl 1993 and 1998 pay-per-view events. Early career (1989–1993)Lash Huffman started wrestling in 1989 as Super Collider on the independent circuit in Texas. In Ivan Putski's Western Wrestling Alliance, he first started feuding with his brother, Booker (who was G.I. Bro at the time) under the ring name Jive Soul Bro. He began teaming with his brother as Stevie Ray (named after Stevie Ray Vaughan) in a tag team called The Ebony Experience for the Global Wrestling Federation, which was on ESPN.[6] They were faces and feuded with the "Blackbirds" of Iceman King Parsons and Brickhouse Brown. They won the GWF Tag Team Championship three times. Stevie Ray then went on to win the GWF North American Heavyweight Championship in 1993.World Championship WrestlingHarlem Heat (1993–1997)In August 1993, they went to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and changed their team name to Harlem Heat. Initially Lash was known as Kane while Booker became Kole. They were then billed from Harlem. They became heels and were on Harley Race and Col. Rob Parker's team in the War Games at Fall Brawl on September 19, 1993, with Vader and Sid Vicious against Sting, Davey Boy Smith, Dustin Rhodes and The Shockmaster. They lost the match when Shockmaster forced Booker (Kole) to submit. In 1994, they got Sister Sherri as their manager and changed their names back to Booker T and Stevie Ray. They feuded with Stars and Stripes (The Patriot and Buff Bagwell) and won the WCW Tag Team Titles for the first time. From there, they feuded with The Nasty Boys (Jerry Sags and Brian Knobs) and got into a feud with Col. Parker's "Stud Stable" of Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buckwhere Parker and Sherri were carrying on a love affair. During this time, Stevie and Booker lost the titles to the Nasty Boys, regained them, then lost them to Slater and Buck and regained them again. They eventually gained Parker as a manager as he abandoned Slater and Buck to be with Sherri. Harlem Heat won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times in 1995, trading the titles with the American Males (Bagwell and Scotty Riggs) in the early fall. They had brief feuds with Lex Luger and Sting, trading the titles back and forth in early 1996 and The Road Warriors before starting a long feud with Rick and Scott Steiner in 1996. In October, they lost their titles to The Outsiders, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, when Nash used Parker's cane to attack Stevie. They would then fire the Colonel, beat him up, turn face, and enter into a brief feud against Parker's newest team The Amazing French Canadians, a feud they would win.In 1997 they feuded with Public Enemy (Johnny Grunge and Rocco Rock), The Steiners and the New World Order. In the summer of 1997, they fired Sherri and added a new manager, Jacqueline. They were briefly put out of action by the nWo and returned to feud with The Faces of Fear (Meng and The Barbarian).Singles appearances; New World Order (1998–1999)As 1998 started to roll around, Stevie had to take some time off from WCW from January to June. Meanwhile, Booker T would go on to win WCW World Television Championship. Through the association with his brother, he would gain his only singles title in WCW, as when Booker took time off with an injury as Television Champion from July to October, Stevie got a "power of attorney" to defend the belt for Booker. He then engaged in a short feud with Chavo Guerrero, Jr. over the right to defend the belt before dropping it to Chris Jericho afterwards.By June 1998, Stevie Ray had returned to the ring, and the powerful gang-like faction of the nWo had been split into two: Hollywood Hogan's nWo Hollywood and Kevin Nash's nWo Wolfpac. Stevie Ray would be offered a spot in nWo Hollywood, but was hesitant at first. He would join the "black & white" in August, effectively turning him heel. Although this would make Stevie Ray known for using dirty tactics and a strength-in-numbers mentality, his brother, Booker, showed little resentment and respected Stevie Ray's decision to be a part of the nWo, and they were able to peacefully co-exist. Meanwhile, Booker was steadily gaining popularity as a face, climbing the ranks of the WCW roster and winning championship titles.During his tenure with the nWo, Stevie Ray would tag team with the likes of Horace Hogan and Scott Norton as well as performing in singles competition, often with Vincent at ringside. Alongside Hollywood Hogan and Bret Hart, he also participated in the War Games of Fall Brawl 1998. The slapjack became known as Stevie Ray's trademark weapon which he would frequently use to knock an opponent unconscious, typically when the referee was distracted.By early 1999, both nWo factions had fused back together, but members of nWo Hollywood started bickering over who the leader of the sub-faction was. Hollywood Hogan began telling various members in private that he had granted them official leadership, causing confusion and friction between members. Not long after, Stevie Ray won the leadership role in a 4-man battle royal on the April 5, 1999 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, defeating Horace Hogan, Brian Adams, and Vincent.Harlem Heat reformation (1999)[edit]As tension grew between members of nWo Hollywood, Stevie Ray started helping Booker T during his matches. As Booker was getting ganged up on in July, the two reunited Harlem Heat. They began feuding with Barry and Kendall Windham as well as The Jersey Triad of Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigelow. They went on to win the Tag Titles three more times, making them 10 time champions.Feud with Booker T (1999–2000)By late 1999, a female bodybuilder named Midnight had joined Harlem Heat. Stevie resented her help and started disputing with Booker over her. He eventually challenged Midnight in a match that would decide whether or not she would stay with Harlem Heat. After being defeated with a surprise small package, Stevie Ray would turn on both Booker and Midnight to form Harlem Heat, Inc. with Big T, Kash and J. Biggs. They won the rights to the Harlem Heat name in a match with Big T against Booker on February 20, 2000 at SuperBrawl X.Color commentator (2000)In May, Stevie split from Big T, Kash and Biggs (who all left WCW) and helped Booker T out of a jam. He then retired from in-ring competition to become a color commentator for WCW Thunder. As a commentator, Stevie referred to all of the women as "yaks" and coined his catchphrase "Suckas gots to know!" He also provided in-depth analysis from a wrestler's point of view during matches and constantly criticized wrestlers for mistakes made in the ring. For example, he would often say that a wrestler "should have went [sic] for the cover!" or "needed to hook the leg!" and this advice earned him the nickname, "Straightshootin'" Stevie Ray.Stevie came back for one more WCW match (a title vs. career match) for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Scott Steiner on the November 27, 2000 edition of WCW Monday Nitro, which he lost.World Wrestling All-Stars (2002)Stevie Ray wrestled a few matches for WWA against Ernest Miller in 2002, retiring later that year.Semi-retirement In 2005, Stevie Ray and Booker T opened the "Booker T and Stevie Ray Pro Wrestling Academy" in Houston, Texas.[7]In April 2013, Stevie Ray inducted Booker T into the WWE Hall of Fame.[1]On February 21, 2015, Booker T and Stevie Ray reunited as Harlem Heat for one last match at Booker T's promotion, Reality of Wrestling's "The Final Heat" event, where they defeated the Heavenly Bodies for the ROW Tag Team Championship. On March 14, the titles were vacated. On March 30, 2016, Stevie Ray debuted a new weekly radio talk show, "Straight Shooting with Stevie Ray" which airs on KCOH radio 92.9 FM HD2 every Wednesday. He is also the host of the podcast Stand Up for Greatness.[8]In 2016 Ray was added to WWE 2K16 as DLC. On this week's podcast, we travel back in time to February 17th 1998. On this momentous date, Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage of the nWo was honored as the Harvard Lampoon’s Real Man of the Year in a ceremony on campus – the highlights of which aired on the March 5th edition of WCW Thunder – but Mr. Savage was not alone on this trip. Rather, he was accompanied by the esteemed feature producer for World Championship Wrestling, Mr. Neal Pruitt. Neal explains all in Episode 23!!! The Lampoon, a semi-secret Bow Street organization that used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine, presented the award to Savage inside a makeshift wrestling ring that had been erected in front of the steps of its castle. Savage, who distinguished himself first as a member of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and now in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), is a former winner of the WWF's Intercontinental Title as well as the WWF and WCW's respective heavyweight championships. He is the first wrestler to receive the Lampoon's Real Man of the Year award. The ceremony honoring Savage was the culmination of a day's worth of highly publicized activities by the Lampoon that included a parade down Mass. Ave. and an introduction by Nobellaureate and Baird Professor of Chemistry Dudley Herschbach. The 45-year-old Savage, whose real name is Randy Poffo, arrived for the event in a silver Dodge Viper, dressed in a black leather jacket, spandex pants and a t-shirt with the word "MADNESS" emblazoned on it. Spectators, both students and Cambridge locals, lined Savage's parade route as he and members of the Lampoon hurled Slim Jim snacks at the crowd. When asked during the parade if he would like to say anything to his fans, Savage replied, "Snap into a Slim Jim!" -- referring to the brand of beef jerky sticks the flamboyant wrestler endorses. Whether by design or by chance, the Lampoon's event was scheduled for the same day as a ceremony honoring the Hasty Pudding Theatrical Society's Man of the Year, Kevin Kline. Seizing upon this coincidence, Savage challenged Kline to a wrestling match in the Lampoon's ring, questioned his courage and insinuated that Kline and Savage's estranged tag-team partner Hollywood Hulk Hogan were"dating". Lampoon officers even provided Savage with a telephone, inviting him to call Kline at the Hasty Pudding to issue his challenge directly. In the ensuing dialogue between Savage and a voice that purported to be Kline, the wrestler called the actor out, saying "take your beating like a man." Kline, however, did not present himself. Later that evening, at a news conference held at the Hasty Pudding Theatre, Kline initially professed ignorance about Savage's challenge, but then assented to it, saying, "I'm Man of the Year. It's sour grapes. I will accept his challenge, but I won't wrestle him." In lieu of Kline, the Lampoon staged a tag-team bout that pitted Savage and Grimace, a McDonalds character, against a group of costumed spectators culled from the audience. These included a cowboy,a ninja, the philosopher Socrates, a cadre of Revolutionary War soldiers and the Grim Reaper. Without Savage's assistance, Grimace dispatched his adversaries with seeming ease. But when the purple-clad mascot turned against his own partner, Savage felled Grimace with one blow, opting for an arm hack to the head rather than his signature move, the "flying elbow from the top of the ropes." Despite Savage's victory, wrestling fans at ringside agreed that his appearance at the Lampoon comes at a crossroads in the middle-aged wrestler's personal and professional life. "He's not the same as he was at Wrestle mania III back in '86," said Savage admirer John E.Connolly '00. In the past five years, Savage has switched his affiliation from the WWF to the WCW and been divorced from his wife and current manager, Lady Elizabeth. More recently, he alienated himself from his gang, the New World Order (NWO), as a result of his feud with Hogan. Responding to a question about a possible schism within the NWO, Savage said, "Sure, they're all tense and I'm feeling great." Still, Savage's youngest fans remain his most ardent admirers. "As many times as Macho Man gets knocked down he always gets back up," said seven-year-old Brian Devenne of Cambridge. The afternoon's proceedings came to a climax when Lampoon President Matthew J. Murray '99 and Narthex Nicholas A. Stoller '98 handed Savage the silver cup that represents their Real Man of the Year Award as well as a self improvement cassette Savage identified as "How to Have Sex Up to One Time a Night." Savage, apparently touched by the recognition, expressed his appreciation and said he would use the award as an incentive to "really get serious and kick ass from now on.
