Every Advent I read W. H Auden's For the Time Being: A Christmas Oratorio. Every year different parts of the lengthy poem catch my attention. Today I want to start by talking about the part of the poem that describes the Annunciation, which is the appearance of the angel Gabriel to Mary. In the Gospel of Luke the opening words of Gabriel are “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Auden sheds a different light on Gabriel's message. In his poem the first word out of Gabriel's mouth is not “Hail” or “Greetings” but “Wake.” Wake up! Awake! In one sense Mary's dream of a happy engagement and big wedding and living happily ever after will be disrupted by the announcement of the angel Gabriel that is going to change everything. As I read the poem I cannot help but think that there is another layer to this story. A spiritual layer. That when the messenger of God says, “Wake!” he is speaking of waking from the dream of life.

In the midst of war, the loss of his mother, and the heartbreak of unrequited love, poet W.H. Auden was rediscovering his faith. And the fitting response to the darkness and despair and apathy around him, he thought, was the Christmas event. So he set to work on a Christmas Oratorio called For the Time Being. Originally meant to be performed and sung, what emerged is a much more sobering and stark retelling of the Christmas narrative than you're used to. Auden's modernist poetry becomes a way for a modern humanity—whose resources are spent, whose plans have gone awry, whose hopes have been misplaced, whose sense of time has been unwound—to find redemption amidst the quotidian, the mundane, and the everyday. But also always in an eternally full "moment of decision"—a response to the bare fact of the Incarnation of God in infant Jesus. Evan Rosa is joined by writer Jeff Reimer (Associate Editor, Comment Magazine), who suggests that this modernist retelling of Christmas helps us to diagnose and treat the quintessentially modern vice of acedia, the noonday demon. They discuss the anachronistic cast of characters Auden uses to comment on the human condition. They read and marvel at several passages of the text. And they consider what Auden takes to be the matter of ultimate importance in our experience of Christmas: responding to the audacious claim that God has become human.About Jeff ReimerJeff Reimer is a writer with bylines at Commonweal, Comment, Plough, and Fare Forward. PHONIQUE on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/PhoniqueBerlin - SoundCloud: @phonique HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to PHONIQUE: Q: Your mix goes back to 1983, that´s a history of 35 years electronic music. Tell us about your influences. A: I am from a small city in West-Germany and without internet back then I had to rely on our local DJ. Luckily we had Andreas Schneider, who was way ahead of every other DJ in our area back then and played House music already in 1987. So I sneaked out from home to go to his parties and the following week I spend my savings to buy some of the records he played. When I got my first scooter I chekced out clubs in other cities like Königsburg in Krefeld, Ratinger Hof and Relax in Düsseldorf or Plastique in Duisburg. When turning 18 I travelled every school holidays to Paris to go to Le Boys and later Rex Club, where DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier were two of the resident DJs. Q: You´re a pioneer of the early days as a DJ and producer for about 20 years now. What has been the greatest achievement for you? A: I could probably write a book about all things happened in the past 20/30 years. Sometimes I feel I am responsible for the downfall of what people call Deep House these days. I produced and played all kinds of House music since the beginning from Disco to technoish and Minimal House, but somehow my vocal productions seem to caught the most attention. Probably having a unique vocalist like Erlend Oye (Kings Of Convenience / Whitest Boy Alive) on my first album and producing his DJ Kicks for Studio !K7 left a mark and this was helping to win multiple DJ awards as Best Deep House Artist at Beatport and Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and 2010 while my idols Charles Webster, Francois K or Jimpster left empty handed. I always felt that they would have deserved it way more, but what I didnt know is that the face of Deep House should change more and more over the following years and al of a sudden people consider Robin Schulz as a deep house artist. But anyways I am pretty proud of tracks like "For The Time Being" or "Vincent Price" but also of some of my mixes. When you are listening to my mix for this How I Met The Bass series you will hopefully recognize how much effort I put in mixes and I am glad there are enough people out there appreciating this. Those people are also the reason for my biggest achievment: still being around in this business for more than 20 years now. Q: What are you currently working on and which future Phonique projects are on the way? A: I am always working on some new club tracks and remixes, but I am also mentoring a young dj/producer talent from Odessa by the name Belkina. On top of that I have the crazy idea of transforming my best vocal tracks into accoustic songs (into a Kings Of Convenience style) for an album format. Looking for a music director for this project at the moment.
