Chuck Da Fonk recently DJ'd at Detroit's Movement Festival and was praised by Francois K for spinning funk and disco at wildly different tempos, and also for playing the slower more syncopated funk. Highlights from that set are presented here including jams by Brainstorm, Detroit Emeralds, Dr. Perri Johnson, Shadow, and Mantra. In the 2nd hour of this episode, Chuck continues to play with tempos through presenting all new music at a diversity of rhythms including fast paced music by Lewis Cole and Fcukers; mid tempo nu-disco by Midnight Generation, Okay Kaya, Vanilla Black; and slower paced Balearic cuts by One Half of Bent and Ichisan. DJ Pippi and Willie Graff's new stunning album "Universal Language" gets a special spotlight this week including it's monster hit "Dance First, Think Later" Tune into new broadcasts of FSQ, Thursdays from 6 -8 PM EST / 11 PM - 1 AM GMT. For the Sixth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest DJ Garth representing stories from San Francisco. We discuss a range of topics including his formative clubbing experiences in the English Raregroove & House music scenes , the early 90's San Francisco rave scene, and the origins and evolution of rave institution: Wicked. "First of the Wicked crew to call San Francisco home, Garth hasspent the past three decades fanning the flames of conscious hell-raising in California. His sound is a unique fusion of Acid House and Psyche Disco. He has produced more than 60 records mostly on his ownlabels Grayhound, Wicked and Golden Goose and remixedeveryone from Strafe, The Units, Tribe Called Quest, Faithless,Perry Farrell, Yabby You and Adam Freeland.Bringing UK sound system culture to San Francisco in 1991,Wicked's lawless full moon beach parties ushered in an era ofrave hysteria that ripped through the west coast and spread intothe heartland. Their packed club nights showcased the cream ofearly House music luminaries including first ever west coastappearances of Harvey, Francois K, Joe Claussel and manyothers. For years Garth and crew toured the U.S. in acustomized 1947 Greyhound bus with imported Turbosoundsystem. Garth was first to set up renegade sound at BurningMan and Reggae on the River festivals. In 2016 Time Out NY placed Garth and Wicked crew in the Top10 Best House DJs of all time alongside Frankie Knuckles, RonHardy, Masters at Work and Tony Humphries.Garth stays true to the original art form playing marathon vinylsets at clubs and festivals around the world. His monthly ForThe Record internet broadcast keeps him in shape. He is alsoan accomplished TV and film actor."Support the Show.

In this week's episode Jeremy and Tim move through the late 20th century to trace dub's echoing influence on Disco, Post-Punk, early House and the music of the British Rave scene. Dub's aesthetics of space, minimalism, and bass-centric production are revealed on the New York dancefloor through the early remix experiments of Walter Gibbons and the studio work of Francois K, as well as in the punk clubs of London and the after-party living rooms of late '80s ravers. Tim and Jeremy consider how the Clash came to lean heavily on their fascination with Dub and Rastafarianism; how Reggae as a musical vocabulary was repeatedly drawn on for distinctly Feminist musical projects with explicitly experimental aims; and spend some time discussing one of UK music's most singular figures, Andrew Weatherall. Tim Lawrence and Jeremy Gilbert are authors, academics, DJs and audiophile dance party organisers. They've been friends and collaborators since 1997, teaching together and running parties since 2003. With clubs closed and half their jobs lost to university cuts, they're inevitably launching a podcast. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! As broadcast October 29, 2021 with plenty of extra nightmares for you podcast trick-or-treaters. Tonight a rare occurrence went down on the air, as both guest artist selectors Freedom Fry and our seemingly faithful host Danno were possessed by different demons and rebaptized in blood. The Darkness as he is now known welcomed Phantom Fright to the show to have some REAL fun with Halloween on the air, and the guests played horror film soundtrack favorites and talked about some of their favorite moments in the movies. However, the host (or whatever vile thing The Darkness is) took it several steps too far during the first hour in committing an abduction of one of his young devotees then murdering and burying that poor soul, watching them rise from the grave as a zombie, cause depraved havoc in the night, and regret their ultimate sealed fate as a member of the undead army. Not to be missed for Halloween enthusiasts & big props to Bruce & Marie fka Freedom Fry for joining this nuthouse of a radio experience.Tracklisting:Part I (00:00)Michael Jackson – Thriller (The Reflex Halloween edit)Lyn Christopher – Take Me With YouSeals & Crofts – Sweet Green FieldsWar – Slippin Into DarknessAngela Alexander & JD Saddler – Don't Make Me Kill YouNorma Tanega – You're Dead Part II (30:03)The Revels – Midnight StrollKip Tyler – She's My WitchWillie West & The High Society Brothers – The Devil Gives Me EverythingThe Love Unlimited Orchestra – Midnight & YouLeon Haywood – I Wanna Do Something Freaky To YouGhost Funk Orchestra – MourningGhost Funk Orchestra – Step Back Wild ChildGhost Funk Orchestra – Fuzzy LogicGhost Funk Orchestra – Pause I Part III (59:07)Freedom Fry – MonsterCreedence Clearwater Revival – Midnight SpecialFlanagan & Allen – Run Rabbit RunAl Bowlly with Ray Noble & His Orchestra – Midnight, The Stars & YouHarry Belafonte – Banana Boat (Day-O)Kay Starr with Orchestra – Headless HorsemanMagnet – Willow's Song Part IV (67:09)Freedom Fry – Zombie LoveTito & Tarantula – After DarkHubert Kah – The Picture (Francois K 12” remix)Roger Bartlett – Fool For A BlondeLana Del Rey – Season Of The WitchJoy Division – Love Will Tear Us ApartNick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand

As broadcast July 2, 2021 with mega miles of extra digital legroom for podcast flyers. On this very special presentation of The Drop, we welcome multi-instrumentalist & singer-songwriter Kamen Ross to take over hour two of the show. For the first time in his career, he is dropping a solo album in September called "I Dreamt We Fell In Love," and the lead single to that called "Yellow Rose" drops next week Wednesday. Not only did we get an exclusive premiere for that, but we also got to spin a track on the show that won't drop until the album does in full just over two months from now! Kamen's playlist tonight is all about the timelessness & familiarity of certain sounds in songs, even ones that are relatively new, and his interview was a great talk about the songs that inspire him, the messages that never age, and memories from his childhood. On this last episode dedicated to Brazil, Sonido Tupinamba met Dj Tahira in front of Niemeyer's Copan building to talk about the afro and indigenous roots of this musical country.Tahira is DJ, producer and digger that blends genres and eras, from traditional sounds to the electronic mixtures from the DJ culture. Emerging from the Sao Paulo scene in the ’90s, Tahira has become famous for seeking all varieties of Afro-Brazilian music. His reworks have become classics for DJs such as Francois K, Gilles Peterson, Nightmares on Wax and more and his recently released edit of Gilberto Gil’s “Toda Menina Baiana” received the seal of approval from Gil himself. His quest for lost and forgotten movements of Brazilian music (more than 30 rhythms) include samba de coco, catalysed by slavery in the 19th century, embraced by the working class and almost banished to obscurity by the musical elite. For further information check out his Levanta Poeria Compilation and watch his Boiler Room.

Pyramids of sand march into the distance as night began to settle over the dunes... Hailing from Montreal with Lebanese/Persian roots, formerly known as BiG AL, BiGz is surely one of the longest serving, globally renowned and respected Middle Eastern DJs on the planet, starting his extensive career back in 1989. Having fallen in love with music at a very young age, his journey evolved naturally, leading him to the New York underground house sound. BiGz was among the first to import western club music and culture back to his native Lebanon where he hosted the primary radio show spoken in the English language; playing underground House Music and Disco imported from the USA and Europe. But in a civil war torn country, it was time to spread his wings and search for the source. Arriving to the USA in the early 90’s, BiGz became a regular club kid at the Sound Factory, Red Zone, Limelight, Shelter, Tunnel, Twilo, Palladium/Arena, Arc/Vinyl and other seminal venues, soaking up sounds laid down by Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, Masters At Work, Roger Sanchez, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, Francois K. and more. His warm demeanor, powerhouse work-ethic and boundless talent have kept him at the epicenter of electronic music for almost three decades, with absolutely no signs of slowing down. Whether behind the decks, in the studio, touring or showcasing new artists via his networks, BiGz continues his ceaseless mission: to tell a story, educate, diffuse good vibes, be the liaison between the old-school and the contemporary while always pushing the sonic barriers to bring exceptional sound quality and music to the world. PHONIQUE on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/PhoniqueBerlin - SoundCloud: @phonique HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to PHONIQUE: Q: Your mix goes back to 1983, that´s a history of 35 years electronic music. Tell us about your influences. A: I am from a small city in West-Germany and without internet back then I had to rely on our local DJ. Luckily we had Andreas Schneider, who was way ahead of every other DJ in our area back then and played House music already in 1987. So I sneaked out from home to go to his parties and the following week I spend my savings to buy some of the records he played. When I got my first scooter I chekced out clubs in other cities like Königsburg in Krefeld, Ratinger Hof and Relax in Düsseldorf or Plastique in Duisburg. When turning 18 I travelled every school holidays to Paris to go to Le Boys and later Rex Club, where DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier were two of the resident DJs. Q: You´re a pioneer of the early days as a DJ and producer for about 20 years now. What has been the greatest achievement for you? A: I could probably write a book about all things happened in the past 20/30 years. Sometimes I feel I am responsible for the downfall of what people call Deep House these days. I produced and played all kinds of House music since the beginning from Disco to technoish and Minimal House, but somehow my vocal productions seem to caught the most attention. Probably having a unique vocalist like Erlend Oye (Kings Of Convenience / Whitest Boy Alive) on my first album and producing his DJ Kicks for Studio !K7 left a mark and this was helping to win multiple DJ awards as Best Deep House Artist at Beatport and Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and 2010 while my idols Charles Webster, Francois K or Jimpster left empty handed. I always felt that they would have deserved it way more, but what I didnt know is that the face of Deep House should change more and more over the following years and al of a sudden people consider Robin Schulz as a deep house artist. But anyways I am pretty proud of tracks like "For The Time Being" or "Vincent Price" but also of some of my mixes. When you are listening to my mix for this How I Met The Bass series you will hopefully recognize how much effort I put in mixes and I am glad there are enough people out there appreciating this. Those people are also the reason for my biggest achievment: still being around in this business for more than 20 years now. Q: What are you currently working on and which future Phonique projects are on the way? A: I am always working on some new club tracks and remixes, but I am also mentoring a young dj/producer talent from Odessa by the name Belkina. On top of that I have the crazy idea of transforming my best vocal tracks into accoustic songs (into a Kings Of Convenience style) for an album format. Looking for a music director for this project at the moment.
Here's an early mix from the HOUSE OF LOVE days. They don't make music like this anymore. Absolutely love it. Featuring tracks by Francois K, Matthias Heilbronn, Llorca, Sun Orchestra, and lots more.
Hello Everyone Its November 22, 2017, Thanks for being here and I hope that you will continue to return as we delight all you music lovers with another cool Decisive Podcast. My Special Guest XDB is a guy who I find to be a nice, funny, talented dj and independent artist more on, for many years he continues to be relevant to his fans. This vinyl junkie to this day still lugs to every gig a bag or two of records rather than the growing popularity of the usb stick. Germany's XDB has been DJing since the early 90s, and his creative growth enhances this decisions of what labels and musicians he chooses to collaborate with. After years of working in a record shop, he launched his Metrolux Music label in 2006. He sees his music heading in a direction that ranges from deep and soulful house to raw, analogue sounding dub techno. XDB is garnering the overdue attention of popular writers and fellow musicians with releases and remixes for Aaron Carl (rip), Norm Talley and Patrice Scott on quality labels like Francois K's Wave Music, Echochord, AIM, Dolly and Patrice Scott´s Sistrum to name a few. Infos: Facebook - www.facebook.com/xdbmetrolux Facebook - www.facebook.com/kosta.athanassiadis Discogs - www.discogs.com/search/?q=xdb+&type=all After numerous invitation requests, its my pleasure to welcome Germany`s very own XDB to the Decisive Podcast Series Family. We have a musical journey for all you lovers out there. The third chapter of our Heartcast series is from Manchester and Mallorca legend, Andy Proctor aka Stretford Dogs Club. Behind some of the UKs best underground club nights like Manchester’s stalwart Deep House night Development & the ever so unique I AM parties in Manchester & Liverpool. A list of DJs that have played with Andy reads like a who’s who of House & Techno, Body & Soul masters Francois K, Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell. US pioneers like MAW’s Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Theo Parrish, DJ Spinna, Ron Trent & Glenn Underground. Techno legends like Deetron, Rolando & Stacey Pullen and right through to German masters like Alexander Barck ( Jazzanova ) , Ame and Dixon. “Stretford Dogs Club” , a tongue in cheek DJ pseudonym and started to produce online mixes via Soundcloud that quickly took up popularity all around the world, with listeners regularly tuning in from Brazil to Japan. He started a project to create a 24 hour mix across the year entitled “A Day in a Dogs Life” which gained recognition and his reputation and popularity grew to epic levels. Playing in places like South Africa and Russia have ensured that the sky is the limit for this dog lover from Manchester. Sit back and relax and enjoy this 4 hour special. We can assure you that you wont be disappointed. Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/stretford-dogs-club
Hausmusik: music made at and/or for, private home enjoyment. Introducing the latest concept compilation from Get Physical Music with tracks from Christian Prommer, Francois K, Brett Johnson, FreakMe, Recloose (and many more) there’s plenty of experience and soul here. The compilation represents a deeper, softer and somewhat more underground sound of house music and the first track immediately establishes the fact that this compilation will be more of a journey, rather than 18 dancefloor hits; Christian Prommer’s beatless ‘Distant Rhythm’ installs thoughtfulness and gets you listening right away. Francois K’s ‘Road of Life’ and the following tracks continue this thoughtful nature, and create a euphoric atmosphere, with soundscapes and depth that shy away from 4/4 club music. The compilation is designed to be both thoughtful and uplifting, and it is just that. Caterpillers & Birds by Silky Raven begins to bring some beats, and each track becomes more upbeat than the last, maintaining the euphoria and meaningfulness that is constant throughout. Avatism’s ‘Bitter Reminiscence’ provides a deep percussive interlude to the dreamy synth driven tracks and Jonatan Bäckelie & Jimpster’s effort that follows brings some meaningful vocals. The last tracks are the most upbeat and rightfully so, as the atmosphere has been building to this point for the whole album. All in all this is truly a compilation for intent listening. It is atmospheric, euphoric and thought provoking. The track listing flows perfectly and executes its purpose; house music for your Haus.
Deep In China (The Luoyang Session) 洛阳 I have been trying to put together some genuine deeper sets for a while. I never fully succeeded to the extend that some would propose that I simply can’t, for I love vocals and sugary melodies far too much to let go and really dig deeper.. Well... whilst travelling "Deep" in China, I had the time to attempt to reach the Great Deepnes :). Using the hotel room sound system as Main output, I came out with 6 deeper sets.. I am still unconvinced of the overall result but here is the first one, between 117 and 120 bpm.. for better or for worse. I may not succeed at the first attempt but I hope that one of the 6 will hit the spot.. Besides I buy far too many deep tracks to let them die in the confines of my hard drive. The set is kept within traditional Deep keys with minimal edges and very current tracks. You will be the judges.. Playlist: 2013 Restless For You (Boogie Rapture Spring Fling). Nathan G 2013 Just the Way (Original Mix). Something Good 2013 Love Sensation (RCATL Mix). DJ Roland Clark 2013 For The Sake Of Love (MiDiMAN Remix). Anturage feat. MiDiMAN 2013 Another Lie (Original Mix) [The Black Music Xtian Edit]. Dapa Deep 2013 Beautiful (Hakan Kabil Deep mix) [Xtian Rub]. Hakan Kabil feat. Majuri 2013 Can You Hear The Beat (Spiritchaser Remix). Kyodai feat. Gabriela Smith 2013 I’m in Love with You. Samir Maslo 2013 Ich Lass Dich Nicht Zuruck_(Jody Wisternoff Retouch). The Peacemaker Project 2013 Moving Sound_(Together Dub). Miguel Migs 2013 Taste This Love (Chris Deepak Remix). Petros Mitolis feat. Val Gee 2013 Content (The Dancer Mix). DJ Roland Clark 2013 Times Up (Last Call Mix With Spoken Word). Cranky Owls 2008 Here Comes the Sun (Francois K. Remix) [Times Up Xtian Edit]. Nina Simone Highliights: From local talent extraordinaire Nathan G, a soft deep tune “Restless For You” to hopefully set a serene start to the set. I love the D sharp key used in countless classical pieces to induce “feelings of the anxiety of the soul's deepest distress, of brooding despair, of blackest depression, of the most gloomy condition of the soul”.. It is I believe one of the best key to use for Deep House. “Just the Way “… simple tune based on 3 piano chords, one vocal hook and great ambient production. “Love Sensation” stay in the minor keys, add some beats and a different vocal hook and we have another serene tune. This is what deep House is: building slowly on very simple premises. “For The Sake Of Love” from Midiman, similar groove, still in minor key keep up with the soothing atmosphere of the set. “Another Lie” from Dada Deep, change of keys and a bit of progressive edge to the Deepness. One of my favourite track of the set. “Beautiful” from Hakan Kabil. Perfectly production, layered with synths and filters and everything Hakan could build on.. Enjoy.. “Can You Hear the Beat” Kyodai revelation of 2013 for me with Spiritchaser doing what they do best.. pure dopeness.. Do not let the simple architecture of the track fool you, it has a lot of in-built swag,. “I’m in Love with You” from Samir Maslo. I have noticed that I have recently bought most of his releases.. Another inspired producer.. This is deep with an undercurrent of Funk and Disco in the keyboard and the guitar. Very clever. “Ich Lass Dich Nicht Zuruck” from the Peacemaker Project.. I will return to this track and open a set with another remix.. Amazing, layered, inspired… I am running out of qualificatives.. DO NOT MISS! "Moving Sound" from Miguel Migs… Deep House sets requires Miguel somewhere.. Simple and effective dope with a slight edge.. “Taste This Love” I love the Deepak remix of Petros Mitolis' track.. and to be able to slot Petros between Miguel and Roland Clark was at last a nice way to to justice to his immense talent. “Content” by now you know I can’t resist a Roland Clark, this one is a bit jazzy for my liking but.. still it is Roland.. If he were a woman and she had his poetry and his voice I would melt! “Times Up” by Cranky Owls.. if it weren’t for the next track I would put it as THE GEM of the set.. and it is current. Architecture, new beats, amazing rich production, (this one requires headphones), funky, this track has everything good deep house can bring to the table AND spoken words, which as you know I cannot resist. "Here Comes the Sun" (Francois K. Remix).. One of my all time fav.. This is pure perfection and if you hear dissonances at the end, Francois K meant them and to be able to bring dissonance on such an musical anthem and still stay at that level of perfection is pure genius.. I am done.. See you soon with Deep In China Session 2 Xtian
TIEFSCHWARZ In a world of ever recycled trends, Tiefschwarz (deep black) is that most classic of shades. Its timeless style is testament to its staying power, and with a DJ and production career spanning over 14 years, this German deep house duo have proven just how apt a moniker can be. Born and bred in Stuttgart, brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz’s passion for techno and deep house flourished their initial experience as DJs in the early 90’s at the now legendary clubs that Ali ran in their home town, ON –U and Red Dog. This led to the formation of Tiefschwarz in 1997, from which they found rapid success with their debut single ‘Music’ (on Francois K’s Wave Music label) and album Ral 9005. By 2001, this had been licensed to the London label Classic Recordings from where they springboarded to international recognition. They decided to make the move to Berlin, at the time fast becoming the epicentre of a true electronic music renaissance, from where they pursued a hectic touring schedule and remixing the likes of Cassius, The Rapture, Missy Elliott, Kelis and their personal heroes Masters At Work. They then scored a double whammy with their all-conquering crossover hit remix of Spektrum’s ‘Kinda New’ and the single ‘Isst’ off their 2005 long-player, ‘Eat Books’. This was also the year that electrohouse dominated the charts and minimal the clubs, but Tiefschwarz have never allowed themselves to be tied down to a certain sound, staying true to their love of melody as demonstrated on their contribution to the Fabric mix series that year. A series of high profile mixes in 2006, including Depeche Mode, Madonna, Roxy Music, Booka Shade, Phonique, Plastikman, dOP, and many others saw them continue perfecting their distinctive sound. Yet this was also the year in which Ali and Basti gravitated back to Berlin to found their own label, Souvenir. Basti explains “We like the idea of seeing music as a souvenir, an impression you take from somewhere. Something intimate that you remember”. They haven’t let this slow down their impressive production workload though, with a ten year anniversary compilation and a 2010 follow up album ‘Chocolate’ made in collaboration with Santé, and featuring Cassy, Seth Troxler, Dave Aju amongst others. At a perfect time to take stock of their career, the brothers are proudly contributing the ninth installment in the Watergate mix series, and have chosen a number of tracks that simultaneously pay homage to the tracks that shaped the beginnings of their career whilst also remaining very much forward looking. After years of constant touring, however, their Souvenir label has allowed them to lay down more permanent roots back in Berlin. It’s a place to foster talent, both young and old, not only in a sense of releasing records but also as a platform to share mutual experiences within a common network, a close core of artists work together including Ruede Hagelstein, Maher Daniel, the brothers Santé and Re.You, Ali & Basti at the helm. With plenty more artists on the roster as well as a digital only subsidiary, Souvenir Plus, and a debut LP from Hagelstein on the horizon, there is promise of plenty yet to come for the Schwarz brothers’ imprint.
Hooked Podcast 003 :: BEN ASHTON Since arriving in Sydney with little more than a backpack, a record box, and high hopes in the spring of 2011, Ben Ashton has quickly established himself as one of his adopted city’s busiest DJs. How about we kick the year off right with some high quality deep house music? This is Alex Callejo's second featured mix on our radio program, the first one being all the way back in 2010. Since then, we've been fervently listening to his spiritually restitutive podcast Simply Deep. Like many Chicago artists, Alex has been influenced by house music as far back as the 80's. Growing up, mixing has always been a leisurely activity used to enjoy dance music from all over the world. "I've had the opportunity to DJ various venues throughout Chicago and the Philippines, and I've had the honor to make DJ appearances on various internet radio stations throughout the world," says the co-founder for HOUSEJUNKYZ and DEEPHOUSVIBES. His current project is Simply Deep. "Today, mixing continues to be a source of enjoyment and relaxation for me," says Alex. "Why I continues to mix? Simply put it's fun, I love the music, so why not?" Alex's influences over the decades have ranged from Hot Mix 5, Mark Grant, Marques Wyatt, Ron Carroll, Mark Farina, Steve Silk Hurly, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Lil Louis, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries, MAW, Ibadan, David Mancuso, Francois K, Glenn Underground, Larry Levan, Ron Trent, 3 degrees, Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler, Jojo Flores, Abicah Soul, Atjazz, Osunlade, and Karizma. Those of us who were in Manila back in 2006 may remember Alex's performance at MyHOUSE, the weekly party we organized at M Cafe. We can only hope for a repeat of that really soon (it's been 7 years Alex!) Here's the track-list to this particularly therapeutic mix by Alex called Love, Life, and Musica that we can only guess was inspired by his recent trip to Mexico to attend the 2012 Mi Casa Holiday. 1) Marlon D feat Ultra Nate (Jose Carretas Mix) - "God's Message" 2) Kemetic Just (DJ Spinna's Galactic Soul) - "I Got Life" 3) Jimpster - "Can't Stop Loving You" 4) Julian Gomes28 feat. Bobby - "Love Song" 5) Jask feat. Jocie (Nikos Diamantopoulos Afro Dub) - "Dreams" 6) Nicholas - "On Your Mind" 7) Johnny Miller meets Cuebur feat. Ckenz - "Good Inside" 8) C'Roberts Walker & Paris Cesvette (NDinga Gaba Deep Sax Dub) - "Loving You In Places" 9) Ralf GUM feat. Monique Bingham - "Take Me To Love" 10) Mi Casa (Atjazz) - "La Vida" 11) Atjazz ft. Clara Hill (QB's Hot Mix) - "Sense of Life" To a fulfilling and music-filled 2013!! Groovement Soul Podcast No.14 is Leftside Wobble's live set from our monthly residency in The Grand Social on the 29th September 2012. Check the grooves that rocked the party on the night. INTERVIEWQuestions by Colin Leopold Q: Where is your favourite place to (a) have a beer (b) have a dance (c) eat dinner? A: Not that I'm swerving the question but in all three cases it's anywhere where the company is great. Q: Do you think there are less boundaries between soulful music in 2012? A: If anything, I think over time dance music has become even more controlled by ever more micro genres. In the 80s before the advent of house music, the better clubs weren't afraid to book DJ's that played diverse music that crossed genre boundaries. New York DJ's such as Mark Kamins, John 'Jellybean' Benitez, Arthur Baker and Francois K were so good at putting together diverse sets that fused multiple musical influences together. Those DJ's have probably been my biggest influence. Q: What advice would you give to best join the dots in a DJ set?A: For me, it's about being in tune with the crowd and not being afraid to play with the mood and energy of the room through the music you're playing. Q: What DJs do you listen to? A: As many as I can. Monday's generally involve me booting up the iPlayer to listen to Giles Petersens show but I also ensure I download mixes from my favourite club DJ's. People like Chris Duckenfield, Gerd Jensen and Move D. Q: You worked a lot with Dazed and Confused magazine in the 90s, what magazine do you read these days and if you could set up your own non-music magazine what would it cover and what would it be called?A: Most of my reading habits have moved to digital media formats these days, but I still keep an eye on what's happening in print publishing via a great blog called Magculture. It specialises in finding those really interesting micro publishing titles that cross the boundaries between culture, fashion and music. From a digital sperspective though, I'm really excited by tablets as a magazine format. There's a really great iPad magazine called Letter To Jane the reminds me very much of the early days of Dazed & Confused in the way that it does really original stuff with it's publishing medium. In the same way that Dazed made you think differently about print media, Letter To Jane does the same with interactive media. Not that I've got any ambition to set up my own magazine, but if I did it would definitely be something for digital tablets. As for a name, Jefferson Hack got there first when he named his Dazed & Confused spin-off Another Magazine. Q: Where do you find your new music? Name your hottest recent discovery or 'one to watch'? A: Soundcloud has obviously become a very important source of music discovery for me in recent years as I love the direct contact with artists it provides which isn't coloured by the opinions of others such as music journalists or record store employees. I obviously don't rely solely on Soundcloud for music discovery, but I just try to ensure my ears/eyes are always open, whatever the source – radio, social media, email newsletters, promos etc. The most exciting band I've discovered this year is a band called Public Service Broadcasting – so hard to describe but in a strange way they remind me of Lemonjelly. Search out a track of theirs called Spitfire on YouTube and you'll get what I mean, the visuals are such an integral part of their music. Q: You did an edit of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. Who's your favourite Beatle and why? | A: That's a really hard one as it constantly flips between John Lennon and George Harrison. At the moment it's George but probably only because I recently bought the Martin Scorsese documentary about his life 'Living In The Material World'. I've just been asked to DJ at an evening to launch the DVD/Blue Ray release of The Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour' movie so my opinion will probably change again after I've been exposed to the psychedelic joys that evening brings! Q: What's the last country you visited to DJ and what was your best, and worst memory of it? A: I've just got back from Barcelona, where I was DJing for a night called Playtime. It was at a brand new venue on the Ramblas which if I'm to be totally honest, I had grave reservations about seeing as the Ramblas is in the centre of Barcelonas tourist district. But it was a fantastic little club with the best small club sound system I've come across outside of London's Plastic People. My favourite memory of the weekend was meeting so many friends that I've made over the last few years through things like Soundcloud. It's a beautifully strange sensation when you feel you know somebody pretty well but you're only meeting them face to face for the first time. The worst part of the weekend was arriving back at my hotel for a quick kip 15 minutes before check-out and finding out that my room was already booked by somebody else so I had no way of bribing the staff into allowing me an extra couple of hours in the room! Q: Did you go to Notting Hill Carnival this year? How was it and what are your top three essentials to bring to make it a good Carnival? A: Notting Hill Carnival is one of my highlights of the year and I'm lucky enough to DJ on what for me is Carnivals best sound system – Sancho Panza. I also run an after party with the Sancho crew on the Sunday night. As for three essentials, 1.) A smile 2.) Your dancing feet 3.) Some form of carnival guilty pleasure – pick your own!
[I]t's two for Tuesday on this episode of M&W. This month, we've got DJs E-man and Doc Link with an energetic two-hour back-to-back mix from their Liberate Sessions show on Cyberjamz. I first met Eric "E-man" Clark on his first trip to Manila in 2004, when he came with Jojo Flores and was hosted by Groove Nation's Edge Pamute. The hot Jon Cutler track "It's Yours", featuring E-man's poetic lyrics that came out a few years earlier, was still burning up the dance-floors around the globe and getting featured on numerous mixes and compilations. It was right around then that I first heard his collaboration with Markus Enochson "Musical Prayer" on Francois K's CD Deep & Sexy Vol.1 (Wave). It was then that I also learned about E-man's Bang The Party, the hugely successful event series that lasted 6 years held in various venues around Manhattan and Brooklyn: a party having the historical significance of Body & Soul, 718 Sessions, Ain't Nothing But A House Party, and other such iconic New York City house music gatherings. There's even a BTP documentary that we wish we could get our hands on (see the trailer). I met E-man again in 2005 when he accepted the "Best DJ - International" Award for Jojo Flores at the Choice Awards 4.0 (Jojo was abroad performing at the time). Elian with E-man at the NYC Choice Awards in 2005 Since then, E-man has hooked up the Chicago DJ and producer Doc Link to launch the Liberate record label, a space for them "to create original music, unfettered by the confines of the traditional record industry protocol." The duo also tours the world and hosts a weekly internet radio show by the same name. We hope to have them visit Manila soon bringing with them their message of freedom. For more on E-man, Doc Link and the Liberate Sessions, click here. And now in the words of E-man, here's 2-hours of "the hottness". Subscribe for free with iTunes

Today Milly De Mori, aka DJ millydemori, is considered one of the upcoming female international DJs in electronic music. Between club gigs, radio, production work and now her personal label SoundSelective Records, her career has been steadily growing to a rounder artist profile. HIGHGRADE REC., FLASH, MALATOID, PRSSLAB REC., LANDED, KRITICAL NOISE REC. or STRIKE are some of the labels she's released with, besides her own SOUNDSELECTIVE RECORDINGS. Fascinated more with tecky sounds and funky basslines than with vocals, Milly De Mori finds her roots in house music in the late 80's/beginning 90's, when hanging out in Ibiza she was first exposed to the 4/4's that changed her life. Italian born living in Milan, Milly decided to move to NY in '93 where she spent 12 years, until 2005. During her US stay Milly bloomed as a DJ artist, and the exposure to a effervescent 90’s New York dance scene with clubs like Sound Factory and Twilo (Danny Tenaglia) or Body & Soul (with Francois K, Clausell and Krivit) or the teck house Matter-Form parties (with Adult Napper, Mr C) contributed to shape her sound to a true mix of electronic and organic elements, thus creating a very personal style that quickly found a great response in the hottest markets like NYC, Atlanta and Miami. In 2009 Milly started her own record label SoundSelective Records with base in New York and distributed by Straight Distribution (Germany).Besides herself, she's also featuring artitst like Luca Doobie, Monopolar, Alex Costa, PToile and Landed, and exploring the boundaries between Teck House, House and Tecno. Supported by Coccoluto, Ivan Smagghe, Laurent Garnier, Ellen Allien, Mark Knight, Cristian Varela, Simon & Shaker, Technasia, Francesco Farfa, Loco Dice.. more infos & sounds: www.djmillydemori.com/djmillydemori.com www.myspace.com/millydemori www.soundselectiverecords.com www.myspace.com/millybar Tracklist: 01.
