This show is a double tribute show for Gwen McCrae and Roy Ayers. Do we have lots of great tales? No. Do we have lots of insightful knowledge about their impact on music? Also no. BUT, we've done a pretty good job of picking the songs and the songs that sampled the songs. So it's a pretty good show, even if we say so.As always, get in touch with requests, recommendations and guest mix inquiries!https://www.instagram.com/radionighttrain/https://bsky.app/profile/thenighttrain.co.ukDon't forget, they're also available for family functions, weddings, funerals, boat launches and more.SHOW NOTES‘Bass on one shoulder, bow and arrows on the other': life with Fela Kuti on history's most dangerous tourDJ MP45 – BACK TO THE HIP HOPStereo Mc's - Dj Kicks (1999)Soul on the Grill / Paul NiceStrange Games & Funky Things Vol. III mixed Kenny DopeStrange Games & Things Vol. I & II by Dj SpinnaDJ Muro - King of Diggin' Volume 1 Side ADJ Muro - King of Diggin' Volume 1 Side BAnother Late Night: Zero 7TRACKLISTINGGwen McCrae - Rockin' ChairBlahzay Blahzay - Danger (Radio Version)Jaylib - The Red (Instrumental)Gwen McCrae - 90% Of Me Is YouRoy Ayers Ubiquity - Hummin'Roy Ayers - Life is Just a Moment (Part 1)A Tribe Called Quest - Description Of A Fool (Talkie)Roy Ayers - Running Away (Short Version)Brainsick Enterprize - Mixmaster USA (Instrumental)Troubleneck Brothers - Back To The Hip-Hop (Radio Edit)Brand Nubian - Wake up (Reprise in the Sunshine) A Tribe Called Quest - Bonita Applebum RAMP - DaylightRoy Ayers - We Live in Brooklyn, BabyDa Bush Baybees - Remember We (TNT Extended)Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Orchestra - 90% Of Me Is YouGwen McCrae - Funky Sensation (Single Version)Gwen McCrae - All This Love That I'm Givin'Junior M.A.F.I.A - Get Money (Instrumental)Junior M.A.F.I.A - Get Money (Radio Edit)Sylvia Striplin - You Can't Turn Me AwayJungle Terrorists - Just Ganja A Guy Called Gerald - SunshineTyler, The Creator ft. Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music was the initial inspiration. His career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase "Bluecollar Gentleman". Around the same time, working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and eventually spending years behind the scenes at Sound Signature. That work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ Kicks compilation “Detroit Forward” (K7 Records) where he enlisted artists that represent the progressive sounds of today. His own track, "North End Funk", was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut. With over a decade of experience in Detroit's music community, Deon has been seasoned by the many worlds within. Ranging from the city's hip-hop scene to the world of underground dance music, and even serving as resident DJ for DeSean Jones' Urban Art Orchestra, all of these worlds inform the musical range in his sets.Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/r&b, house, techno, & broken beat. His sets aim to employ elements from all these forms with culture in mind.Aside from playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the "Healin' Session" party series and the music and art exhibition, "Black Music". https://soundcloud.com/deonjamarmd https://www.instagram.com/deonjamar/ Recorded on July 1, 2023 in Long Island City, Queens NY. More than a decade into his storied career, Paul Rose aka Scuba is one of the most vital figures in electronic music. It remains that way thanks to his constant musical evolutions and always contrary perspectives. Five full length albums, a varied collection of EPs, and commercially available mix albums for Ostgut Ton, DJ Kicks and Fabric all prove this. They range from visceral bass and techno affairs to jubilant main room offerings and, more recently, take in a return to more percussive, increasingly introspective sounds such as his 2018 Caibu long player debut as SCB. As a DJ he is just as singular, and his entry into the fabric series proves that across 42 seamlessly stitched together tracks which take you to the heart of a foggy dance floor. Rose's label also continues to plot a line between gritty dance floor 12”s and long lasting album experiences from a carefully curated selection of contemporary artists. Predicting the next step for this enigmatic artist is a fool's errand, then, but that is what makes him so compelling. This episode Scuba discussed the ins and outs of running Hot Flush Recordings for the last 20 Years. We dove in to his podcast "Not A Diving Podcast" and the changes he has experienced through his career. Anfang Juli fand das 50. Roskilde Festival in Dänemark statt.

Last month i spoke to DJ Seinfeld about his interest in UFOs. DJ Seinfeld is the well-known moniker of Swedish-born, house producer Armand Jakobsson. His tracks tend to feature thumping house beats, sunny synth pads, reflective piano melodies, and heart-tugging vocal samples, with his earliest productions smothered in a thick layer of tape hiss. Some of his records feature rough, choppy breakbeats; he also produces jungle under the name Birds of Sweden. After his initial EPs received positive feedback, he made his full-length debut with 2017's Time Spent Away from U, followed by an entry in the DJ-Kicks mix series in 2018. His softer, more polished second album, Mirrors, appeared in September 2021

Without hyperbole, it's safe to say that the San Francisco dance music ecosystem would simply not be what it is today if it weren’t for the mostly thankless work of Ryan Merry - now better known as Elexos Park, but formerly known as Ghosts On Tape. Landing back in San Francisco after a stint in Berlin had him refreshed and revitalized, with a new sound and direction to match. His new AYLI podcast shows off that new sound. Make sure to catch him this Saturday Oct. 13 at an undisclosed warehouse location in San Francisco, supporting DJ Seinfeld on his DJ-KiCKS tour.

Hasan Piker sits down with Montreal producers David "Dave One" Macklovitch and Patrick "Pee Thug" Gemayel, known collectively as Chromeo. https://chromeo.net/headoverheels/ With a love of talkboxes, vintage drum machines, and gleamingly plastic synth tones, Montreal electro-funk duo Chromeo developed a sound that looked to the deepest echelon of '80s funk and radio R&B to develop their sound. While wearing the influence of Zapp, Prince, and even Hall & Oates on their sleeve, their style would grow more refined as the years went on, with production getting more detailed as their songwriting became more nuanced. The band's homage to the greats of the dancefloor and its unbridled worship of pop found its summit on their fourth album, 2014’s White Women. By then the group had fine-tuned their formula and also opened up their creative world to guest vocalists and producers, maximizing their mainstream accessibility and resulting in their highest-charting release. Chromeo were formed in 2002 by Montreal producers David "Dave One" Macklovitch and Patrick "Pee Thug" Gemayel. Dave One took on vocal duties, though both former hip-hop producers were multi-instrumentalists and brought their love of classic funk and soul to their nascent creations. The "Destination Overdrive" single appeared in late 2003, complete with the tingling B-side "Needy Girl" (a ringer for Yaz's "Situation") and a DFA remix. The single was followed by a proper full-length debut, She's in Control, released on Vice in early February 2004. To satiate their fans between records, Chromeo issued two mixes, 2005's Un Joli Mix Pour Toi and 2006's Ce Soir on Danse!, while gigging and working on their second album. Fancy Footwork arrived in the summer of 2007, boasting a slicker sound and poppier songwriting (courtesy of Cassius' Philippe Zdar on mixing duties), plus an avalanche of remixes. In the summer of 2008, they would collaborate with Hall & Oates' own Daryl Hall for part of his online series Live from Daryl's House. As fans awaited another album, Chromeo released DJ-Kicks in 2009. They finally returned in August 2010 with Business Casual, released by Atlantic Records in the U.S. The singles "Over Your Shoulder" and "Sexy Socialite" were released in 2013, and both landed on the following year's White Women, an album that featured Solange, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, and, in affirmation of their indebtedness to early-'80s R&B, vocalist Tawatha Agee (of Mtume). The duo's highest Billboard debut, it narrowly missed the Top Ten. Four years later, the band returned with fifth album Head Over Heels, another album heavy on guest contributions from the likes of DRAM, French Montana, Amber Mark, and others. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Learn more about your ad choices. PHONIQUE on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/PhoniqueBerlin - SoundCloud: @phonique HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to PHONIQUE: Q: Your mix goes back to 1983, that´s a history of 35 years electronic music. Tell us about your influences. A: I am from a small city in West-Germany and without internet back then I had to rely on our local DJ. Luckily we had Andreas Schneider, who was way ahead of every other DJ in our area back then and played House music already in 1987. So I sneaked out from home to go to his parties and the following week I spend my savings to buy some of the records he played. When I got my first scooter I chekced out clubs in other cities like Königsburg in Krefeld, Ratinger Hof and Relax in Düsseldorf or Plastique in Duisburg. When turning 18 I travelled every school holidays to Paris to go to Le Boys and later Rex Club, where DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier were two of the resident DJs. Q: You´re a pioneer of the early days as a DJ and producer for about 20 years now. What has been the greatest achievement for you? A: I could probably write a book about all things happened in the past 20/30 years. Sometimes I feel I am responsible for the downfall of what people call Deep House these days. I produced and played all kinds of House music since the beginning from Disco to technoish and Minimal House, but somehow my vocal productions seem to caught the most attention. Probably having a unique vocalist like Erlend Oye (Kings Of Convenience / Whitest Boy Alive) on my first album and producing his DJ Kicks for Studio !K7 left a mark and this was helping to win multiple DJ awards as Best Deep House Artist at Beatport and Ibiza DJ Awards in 2008 and 2010 while my idols Charles Webster, Francois K or Jimpster left empty handed. I always felt that they would have deserved it way more, but what I didnt know is that the face of Deep House should change more and more over the following years and al of a sudden people consider Robin Schulz as a deep house artist. But anyways I am pretty proud of tracks like "For The Time Being" or "Vincent Price" but also of some of my mixes. When you are listening to my mix for this How I Met The Bass series you will hopefully recognize how much effort I put in mixes and I am glad there are enough people out there appreciating this. Those people are also the reason for my biggest achievment: still being around in this business for more than 20 years now. Q: What are you currently working on and which future Phonique projects are on the way? A: I am always working on some new club tracks and remixes, but I am also mentoring a young dj/producer talent from Odessa by the name Belkina. On top of that I have the crazy idea of transforming my best vocal tracks into accoustic songs (into a Kings Of Convenience style) for an album format. Looking for a music director for this project at the moment.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #PeterAgoston interview session! We’re on our behind the scenes, marathon ish this week in the form of a 2 hour interview with the man behind Culturama, Female Fun Records, MF Doom’s Special Herbs & Spices and current manager for Dam Funk. We cut straight to the chase from jump and discuss his recent harrowing, near-death experience from kidney failure, his eventual transplant via the paired kidney exchange program and how the experience brought him full circle work for himself in the form the Agoston Agency. PA’s hip-hop roots run deep, as we discuss his being exposed to hip-hop at a very early age growing up in Blacksburg, VA, having a college radio show at Virginia Tech in high school (!) and one of his early mentors, one Dumi Right from Zimbabwe Legit. If that’s not enough we get into Peter’s summer working with Ed Wong @ Sandbox Automatic during it’s early days, his move into film and the ground breaking, forward thinking Culturama video series and how he transitioned into starting his own label, Female Fun Records. Never ones to get stuck in the past, we talk the Agoston Agency’s impressive roster, which includes People Under the Stairs, Will Sessions and Dam Funk to name a few, and what we can expect from Dam in 2016 and beyond. There’s loads more but you’ll have to tune in to hear what else this weeks session has in store. Make it a point to pick up Dam’s DJ Kicks mix on May 27th, it’s sure to be a BBQ pleaser this Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer. After their traditional three-month hiatus, Shots Fired has resurrected to bring you a conversation taped earlier this year with modern funk legend-in-the-making, Dam-Funk. They talk about the nature of the contemporary music industry, Todd Rundgren, what it means to be original in the post-modern world, and of course, all things funk-related. In addition, Jeff and Nocando mourn the loss of Prince. You can and should pre-order Dam-Funk's new DJ Kicks compilation coming out on May 27. http://www.amazon.com/Dam-Funk-DJ-Kicks/dp/B01EDH70DU Follow Dam-Funk on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaMFunK

John Talabot is the acclaimed Spanish DJ and producer who has brought a real sense of melody and occasion to house and techno. The Hivern Discs boss, as well as releasing a standout album in ƒIN, and fine collaborations with Axel Boman and Pional, is also an in-demand remixer celebrated for being able to create majestical grooves from originals by people like The xx and Shit Robot. He has also put together a stunning DJ Kicks mix and now he has been in the booth again, putting together a typically epic podcast for our on going series. Across the course of one and a half hours, the Barcelona based Talabot lays out his musical modus operandi in all its glory: serene house riddled with melody, dreamy pads and wavy tones that speak to the soul. With a rather blissed out and dreamy undercurrent, he slowly works through house old and new and keeps a strong, compelling groove present and correct at all times. Officially entitled "Post Summer Melodies" by Talabot, this mix is full of just that, and is sure to keep you warm long after the sun has gone.
Together with other similar DJ mix series like those of the London Fabric label and “DJ Kicks” on K7!, the format of the Body Language Compilations is amongst the last of its kind available on the market. Junior Boys, Modeselektor, Dixon, Matthew Dear, Azary & III, Catz ‘n Dogz, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose and many other artists have, over the past 9 years, contributed to the reputation of the successful series released on Get Physical. Like both of the label co-founders from M.A.N.D.Y before him, DJ T. has, for the second time, been given the chance to lay his hands on the series for the 15th edition. The conceptual approach that DJ T. has taken to this mix is similar to that of his earlier work. Here DJ T. is not content with just fleeting snapshots of a limited style. This 78 minute long mix, consisting of 20 tracks is timeless, not seeking to please by fitting within the formula of contemporary dance music, yet completely immersed in the here and now. The full and hypnotic deepness that runs through the core of this set makes it perfect for the club, but is just as mesmerizing off the dance floor. The tracks and remixes from such diverse producers as Leon Vynehall, Oskar Offermann, Tuff City Kids, Tom Trago, Seuil, Franck Roger, Paolo Rocco, Youandewan (and many others) blend perfectly in DJ T.’s mix to form a uniform and harmonious narrative. Even those connoisseurs on the hunt for hidden gems and insider knowledge will be rewarded on Body Language Vol. 15: the mix includes edits produced especially for this compilation, tracks from artists like Nina Kraviz and ItaloJohnson that, until now, have only been released on vinyl, and a version of the debut release from the brand new collaboration between John Talabot & Axel Boman (Talaboman). Those who buy the CD, limited to only 1000 copies, will also be able to download the tracks and the mix for free.
This is the first of many from Boston's Dusk Till Done crew and friends. We were lucky to have our very special friend, Mr. Danny Howells, grace our decks for close to 1.5 hours at a recent event. We hope you enjoy as much as we did, and more to follow soon... Bio: Danny is one of the few DJs on the scene today that truly has a style of his own. With his passion for all styles of music and infectious personality, Danny has created a unique, eclectic sound that has established him as one of the most in demand DJs in the world. Danny is one of the hardest working and most dedicated individuals in the business with over 20 years experience and a hectic touring schedule that constantly takes him around the world. He's played in the world's coolest clubs and held residencies at places such as Arc, Ministry of Sound, Twilo, Renaissance, The End, and Bedrock, as well as his own Dig Deeper nights worldwide. With a back catalogue of well received mix albums under his belt, he has previously compiled acclaimed mixes for Global Underground, being the only DJ to contribute to not only the main series with his Miami album, but also the 24:7 and Nu-Breed Series. In addition to this, he also compiled a cd for Azuli's Choice series, as well as albums for Renaissance along with three volumes of his own Nocturnal Frequencies series. As a producer he has been responsible for many stand out tracks, including the timeless Persuasion/Repercussion on Bedrock Records, Breathe on Renaissance Records and Kinkyfunk on Yoshitoshi Records. He also hit the charts in 2004 with the Miami hit Dusk till Dawn, which featured the talents of Dick Trevor and Erire. Danny has also had massive dance-floor success with Deep Dish as "Size DDD" and the Eminem sampling "Nobody Listens To Techno". In more recent years he has been focusing on original productions for his own Dig Deeper label, the likes of which have been licensed to mix albums by artists such as Juan Maclean on his DJ Kicks album, and Cassy for her recent compilation on Cocoon. On the remix front Danny has previously mixed records such as Roachford's "Ride The Storm", Madonna's "Get Together", Marco Bailey's "Smooth Drive", and Bent's "Waiting For You". Other artists that have received the remix treatment include We Deliver, Stryke, International Observer, Robbie Williams, David Morales, BT, Chakra, Coco and Stonebridge, Destiny's Child and many more, including most recently Felix Da Housecat's purple tribute, "We All Wanna Be Prince". Building on his discography of original productions is a major priority for Danny, as his Dig Deeper label enters it's third year. Danny has come a long way since his early beginnings in his hometown of Hastings, though his complete love of all music remains the same. Danny is a DJ with a broad musical taste who likes anything from jazz to rock, to pop and anything a bit bizarre. He likes to champion his own special tracks and records that nobody else has latched on to and has a way of combining cutting edge grooves with crowd pleasing dynamics that enable him to connect with his audience making him one of the hottest DJs in the world.

We just finished up a massive tour in support of the new DJ Kicks mix we put out with Soul Clap on !K7. After an amazing April spent criss-crossing Europe, we took the show back home to North America in May, ending with the Grand Finagle during Movement, Detroit. Luckily we recorded one of our favorite sets right at the end, at our gig at Footwork, Toronto for The Modern Love Affair party. Part II can be found on the Soul Clap podcast: http://bit.ly/11JB6n
Hey everybody,My names Pieter and I've got a horrible crush on the random noise of our musical landscape.1. Quintronics - Drum Buddy Intro (Reversed and Reverbed & Kick Opener)"Electrical energy, when closely examined, is in fact more similar in its complexity to a plant or an animal form than it is to the mechanical devices or computer machines with which it is usually associated. It is not necessarily more complex, but equally microcosmically [sp] complex." - Drum Buddy Island 2. Herbert - Moving Like a Train Herbert is one of the rare agitprop artists in the underground who is beyond convention, this though is a perfectly straightforward piece of soul - of such quality I get bubbly by the second half's panoramic heights. 3. Henrick Schwarz - You Rock, I Rock, We RockHenrick had a much raved about album last year, DJ Kicks, which was by all means OK. This is a snippet of a live set he played in the promotion of that release.4. Charles Leonard - Funky Driver on a Funky Bus Unfortunately I could find very little information about this artist, which isn't to say that he's unknown but I think that his story is untold. What I can find seems to hint at a storied history that is familiar to one person at least. This song features the vocals of an actual bus driver, W.C. Stone. I'm not sure if that is the real name as it might be a bit of word play around the idea of shit. No disrespect intended - just ambling thoughts. < I talk too much. The volume of my speech may lead one to suspect I'm an idiot >5. Mavis Staples - On My WayLong time soul and gospel singer gives us a moving album for our modern world. There is no time imaginable, when meaningful music powerfully spoken is not important to our essential nature as social animals. Liner notes claim the album was Anti-Produced by the Ry Cooder, anti-production my friends, fall in love with it. 6. Life in a Blender - Dead Get DownLife in a Blender is well worth the effort of tracking down and independently verifying, in terms of quality, their varied output. Hmm. They're from Brooklyn!7. Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My GodYeah, you've heard this before. I just have to share it before it gets totally played out. Thanks to the "Hits in the Car" for turning me on to it. Unfortunately I call them chefs on the voice bit, yep - sorry.8. Fabulous Entourage - Theme SongHuh.. ..they're from New York too.. .. hmmm.To kick off the accidental study in New York Music;"New York City rockers The Fabulous Entourage serve up an irrepressible blend of throbbing ... "9. Keb' Mo - Kind Hearted WomanAccidental New York Review takes a back seat for the California blues man whose being putting out disc after disc of hard luck licks since the 80's.10. Matt & Kim - Verbs Before NounsCatastrophe New York Showcase continues - and they're from Brooklyn too. These two are awesome. Seriously I wish I had half the joy of life these two have.11. DAT Politics - Viper EyesNot from New York - but across the pond and another reason to love France. This is like Matt & Kim, if they replaced the Casio with an industrial strength sampler. Simply wonderful.12. Hefner - Hymn for the CigarettesA Peelie band from the late 90's to the turn of the century. These guys are routinely underrated even by the obscurist aficionados (like me) who troll the Peel selections for the rare sounds.13. Thieves Like Us - Drugs in my BodyThe impartial declaration of New Yorker Artist due to Habitation, doth define them as members of the City. Yep more New York! Well, they came from Berlin and they are claiming to move to France soon. So that is Ok, they live here right now.14. Lady Bug Transistor - Here Comes the RainThe incremental catalog of bands that are from around here: Lady Bug is from the Brooklyn too - this is the soft mellow song on this weeks podcast. Enjoy your temporary respite. 15. Soophie Nun Squad - Donkey CallThe Little Rock based Punk Group recently called it quits - I don't know how big a following they had from their town, but I want them to know that I really appreciated their talents and that they will be missed.16. Cocorosie - Noah's ArkThe kooky combination of two girls; one from Fort Dodge, Iowa, while the other hails from the Big Island, Hawaii are placed into a crazy Brooklyn art collective. See what happens when they stop acting nice and start acting like artists. Yes; Brooklyn is in New York.Backing tracks:Mala - Digital MystikzDj Hell - Never be Alone AgainOctoProject & Blackmoth Super Rainbow - Psychic SwellingImage credits:Drum Buddy Index Page - http://www.drumbuddy.com/
