If you are a drone owner (or fly any RC aircraft) or if you intend to purchase one, you MUST watch this podcast.  The FAA has proposed new rules which will ground all current drones and make it nearly impossible to capture interesting photos or videos with our drones.  The FAA is taking public comments up until March 2nd, so it is very important to register your concern!! In recent news, Yuneec has launched a 30x optical zoom drone, the E30Z.  Sony's image sensor business has been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak which has disrupted their supply chain.  Sigma indicates it is starting over with its development of a full-frame Foveon-based camera which was first announced back in 2018.  Fujifilm will discontinue its Fujicolor film packs by the end of March. Additionally, Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma announced the L-Mount alliance, which opens Leica’s SL camera mount to two new camera and lens manufacturers. https://shop.panasonic.com/lumixs   Fuji announced the GFX 50R - that is a more compact and rangefinder-style medium format version of the GFX 50S. The 50R will be quite about $2000 cheaper than the 50S at launch and it should start shipping in November 2018. To support the GFX-System even further, Fuji has added three new lenses to the G-mount lens-roadmap. The GF 50mm f3.5 (WR), the GF 45-100mm f4 (OIS & WR), and the GF 100-200mm f5.6 (OIS & WR). The new GR III will have a new 24MP sensor with phase detect AF pixel, an upgraded fixed 28mm EFV f2.8 lens, and a touchscreen. It is said that Zenith is building the camera body while Leica is manufacturing the sensor and electronics for this camera. The camera will ship together with a Zenitar 35mm f1.0 lens and a production run of 500 copies is planned to ship in Russia and Europe in early 2019. The price for the set is expected to cost around €5000.   Zeiss also remembered their tradition of making cameras and announced the Zeiss ZX1 full frame compact camera. The camera will have a 37MP full frame sensor with a fixed 35mm f2 Distagon leaf shutter lens. Nex to an electronic viewfinder the camera will have a 4.3” touch-screen rear LCD with a 1280x720 pixel resolution. The camera will store the images on an internal 512GM memory and a version of Adobe LightRoom CC is also installed onto the camera. At this year’s OPTIC Photography Conference, we sat down with representatives from camera and gear manufacturers to talk about their latest products, and question them on their company philosophies and the general state of the camera industry. We present here a compilation of conversations with four of our guests: Rudy Winston from Canon, Marc Farb from Sigma, Thomas Curley from Panasonic and Rod Clark, founder and CEO of Wine Country Camera. Within this informative episode, we speak about Canon’s response to the rise of the smartphone, the success of entry-level DSLRs, possible mirrorless offerings and this year’s new releases. Glenn Keller became a chip designer under the guidance of Jay Miner – father of the Amiga computer and a chip developer for the Atari 2600 / 8-bit range of computers. Keller’s life in computing includes the Paula sound chip for the Amiga computer; contract work with Commodore for the AAA chipset, as well as helping RJ Mical and Dave Needle bring the Handy (Atari Lynx) and 3DO gaming machines to life. He has been designing imaging sensors at Foveon since 1998. RIP 16 starts out with Glenn’s background as an MIT graduate in Ocean Engineering and goes straight through his storied career. Godox ES600P - Joseph's "Pack & Head" strobe that he tried to walk around with all wedding day First off...don't judge! The photos on the left are all from Russell's first "pro" shoots in 2009. Russell's early work attempted to replicate what he saw coming out of Seattle and Tacoma, Washington at the time. Photographers like Benj Haish, Sergio Mottola, and Sean Flanigan were innovative in the mid-naughts. Using Tilt-Shift lenses for portraits, attempting digital film emulation, and completely breaking traditional compositional rules. In these early days of Russell's photography career he lacked a strong technical knowledge of gear and image processing (it shows) and experience at working with people. His pun skills were also pretty weak.  The photos on the right are attempts at pairing Russell's more recent work to illustrate both the influence of the beginnings and establishing the importance of experience (and of course gear!!!). This photo is one that Duy delivered to his friends after their wedding he attended as a guest. It was after this that he thought it might be possible to make a little bit of extra cash on the side shooting weddings for people who couldn't afford experienced pros. This B-list guest photo turned out to be the catalyst that would spark a passionate hobby onto a transformative path into a new career. He just didn't realize it at the time. The photos on the left are of Duy's first engagement shoot and then a couple from his first wedding. At the time, Duy just browsed generic wedding photographers who were on the more documentary side of things. Not particularly influenced by specific photographers, he set out to try to just do a passable job. It wasn't until after the wedding that he'd discover the likes of wedding superstars like Anna Kuperberg, Ben Chrisman and Fer Juaristi--all of whom continue to inspire him today. The photos on the right represent some of his latest "equivalent" photos which evolved after he finally understood moments, lighting, and composition. And of course becoming a Maximalist Photographer with too much stuff. Aw, who are we kidding, there's no such thing as too much stuff. More is more.
