With smartphone cameras coming to a plateau on quality -- especially on zoom lenses -- there is a distinct spot for point-and-shoots. Compact cameras certainly have value and the team thinks there is definitely a place for them in the market today, but also thinks there is a "right" and "wrong" way for manufacturers to jump in on this popular trend. Sure, these kinds of cameras need to be affordable but it's often not quite enough to just slap a USB-C charging port on a compact camera design from 8 years ago and call it good. That said, there are a few compact cameras that the team thinks would be okay to just re-release with minor upgrades to start serving the market right away. Well, 2024 has certainly come and gone in a flash, meaning it's time once again for us to reflect on new photo offerings in our annual Cameras of the Year episode, now renamed Photo Gear of the Year. Featured in our discussion are new releases from Canon, FUJIFILM, Leica, Mint, Nikon, OM SYSTEM, Panasonic, Ricoh Pentax, and Sony. In the words of our recurring guest, Kevin Rickert, B&H's Senior Sales Trainer for Photography and Lighting, “Everything old is new again” at least when it comes to this year's most sought-after camera releases. A penchant for pocketable, fixed lens cameras led us to organize our camera offerings by type rather than in an alphabetical laundry list. Along with debating the current craze for “the digicam look,” we consider whether manufacturers will respond to consumers' increasing appetite for midrange point and shoots. After the break, we shift to the newest crop of flagship cameras that are built for speed, while also discussing notable updates to other new releases. We also shed light on the essential role served by firmware updates, both in trimming a new camera's time to market and allowing you to get more out of the camera you already have. As Kevin points out, “It's an important part of having a camera. Much like if you have a car, you need to get oil changes.” We wrap things up with some predictions for 2025, including Kevin's hopes for a continued resurgence of point and shoot models, plus some intriguing new photo accessories that caught his eye this year. Stay to the end to learn about the inventive new Fjordan camera control for the iPhone, recently acquired by Leica. In this episode of the Camera Café Show, we sit down with celebrated wildlife and landscape photographer and OM System Ambassador Andrew Fusek Peters (UK) to explore his incredible journey from a poet and renowned children's author to a leading figure in British wildlife photography. Andrew shares how his passion for nature, coupled with his artistic eye, has shaped his career behind the camera, and the pivotal moment that transformed his love for the outdoors into a lifelong photographic pursuit. Andrew has published several successful books, including “Butterfly Safari”, which documents all 59 UK butterfly species—a project that took years of dedication and travel across the country. He offers insight into the process of bringing such a book to life, from capturing rare species to going through thousands of photos, all while balancing his creative vision with the demands of the publishing world. He also gives practical advice for photographers looking to get their work published in magazines, drawing from his extensive experience with many national and international media outlets like BBC Wildlife Magazine, Country Life, The Times, The Guardian, Daily Mirror, Amateur Photographer, Digital Camera and an ongoing list of 600+ published pictures. For Andrew, persistence, originality, and storytelling are key to getting noticed. As an OM System ambassador, Andrew shares how using the OM System technology has helped him capture breathtaking moments in nature, like his latest iconic image of a dragonfly against the Milky Way, shot in a single image. He offers tips for wildlife photographers, from the importance of patience and understanding animal behavior to the technical aspects of working with high-speed cameras. Andrew also reflects on his battle with cancer and how it reshaped his approach to photography, making him more appreciative of the beauty found in everyday moments—whether it's photographing ruby-tailed wasps in his own garden or capturing the Northern Lights up a hill.
